Thanks for sharing! Came in handy as I'm going to do this mod today on my dad's MS170. Very well made video BTW, clear & concise! Greetings from Germany, Gereon
Just wanna say, great job on these informative videos. I’m a subscriber and fellow Canadian, and live in a community where you have to be hands on, so your tutorials are much needed. Thank you.
Dony- Just ordered this for two of my MS170 saws (one found in a field & I fixed up) because of you. Highly recommend THE STIHL OEM UPGRADE (currently $20 in the USA over on the Stihl Amazon). I owe you one, Dony. Those front adjusters drive me crazy.
Thank you so much! I just converted my 180 today and it only took about 30 minutes taking my time. The old toolless adjuster didn't hold tension and was frustrating to use--I'm glad it's gone. The entire upgrade was about $25.
I like my MS170, they come with no gasket between the muffler and cylinder. My saw was getting nasty in that area. I ordered one meant for an MS250, much better now.
I went looking to do this at my local dealer, about a year ago, and he said no, not available for this saw. Thanks to your video, I now took the part number and ordered the kit, which arrived today. Easy installation!!! Now if I could just get my 038AV started as easily I'd be all set. Thanks for the video.
No more carrying an extra long screwdriver to get to the original location..I carry a 1/2" rachet with the 3/4" socket and an old extra long screwdriver everytime there is a downed tree on our property..going to get this part for my 170 Monday.. excellent video and mod.
The Stihl Engineer who designed the single front chain adjustment screw should be ashamed of him/her self, taken outside the factory, have his/her pants lowered and given a swift kick in the butt. So there...
Thanks for a nice clean tutorial! I did this upgrade 2-3 years ago, it has worked perfectly, much more accessible than original. I also added metal dogs, another simple addition.
Totally off topic but my snowblower was doing the surging shuffle. Went back in your vids and found the one that fixes the problem. Didn't have a carb kit but I did remove the jet with the plastic cap and drilled the jets as recommended and now runs great. Just saved myself a couple of hundred dollars on a service. Thanks a lot it was perfect..
Thank you Donyboy for all the stihl chainsaw videos. You have effectively eliminated the need for me to send any saw in for service. All the way down in Florida I might add. Excellent how to videos sir. Thank you and keep up the good work.
I have recently done this to my little 170. A handy modification but not crucial, just easier to adjust the chain. Also I’ve added metal dog spikes which are a lot better than the standard plastic fantastics. With a decent chain I can use the little stihl all day on smaller wood, nice and light. Otherwise I use one of my bigger chainsaws on the big limbs/trees. Like your videos. Cheers
I like this video. I only have one saw anymore with a front adjuster- my 35 year old Super 25 Poulan. All my Stihl's have either side adjuster or they are the E version. I hate those front adjuster saws. If I ever end up with a front adjuster I will convert it as outlined in your video.
Hello Don I have an MS170 it’s all I need for what I do with it. I have meant to do this upgrade for some time and while visiting my mom I saw your video and used the part number you gave us and ordered the kit. It’ll be so much easier tightening the chain now. I’ll have to look at the video you have for that hidden grease spot on the clutch so I can grease it before any damage occurs. Enjoy your videos from SS Marie, Ontario
Nice video, it helped when I put on the side mod Tension Adjuster. It was easy. Just have to be sure thet when the put ths saw back togther that you center the chain in the sprocket. Next I;m gonna put on the metal dogs.
I would highly recommend as another MS170 MS180 upgrade doing a conversion to 1/4” Picco chain, bar, and sprocket. The narrow kerf and usually shorter chain like a 12” bar similar to those on Stihl pole saws or battery powered saws means less resistance because of a narrow kerf and less teeth to have to drive in the cut. This was a HUGE upgrade for me and I found the MS170 with the side adjuster and narrow kerf chain transforms this saw from feeling underpowered too a limbing/firewood hungry little monster. I also took it up another notch and added an adjustable carburetor but honestly it does fine even with the stock carb. This is my go to saw when I put on waders and have to clear downed branches in the creek/canal that people kayak ever Sprig and Summer and usually Fall/Winter brings a lot of downed branches. I find this saw much more nimble, fast cutting, and less tiring to lug around in the water or up embankments. Stihl is selling similar power to weight ratio saws with similar bar setups which are basically top handle saws converted to be rear handle saws for $200 to $300 more than the cost of this saw. If you own and operate a STIHL pole saw this a very logical upgrade/mod because you’ll already have this bar and chain in use and it always helps running similar chains and bar sizes that are interchangeable for simplicity sake when in the field.
Great video Don, thanks so much. Utterly brilliant no-brainer upgrade - any chain adjustments using the old position are a right pain, you can never quickly find the adjuster when it's covered with sawdust and it's easier to cut your hand on the chain. Having the side adjuster makes it SO much easier and far more likely that I'll keep the chain adjusted just right, it's so quick and hassle free. Super video, nice and concise and really well shot 👍👌👏.
You can also upgrade the bar and chain from .043 gauge to .050 gauge. No need to do the drum sprocket(same chain pitch). Now you can use the 63 PS full chisel 3/8 picco chain. Full chisel feature not available in the 61 PMM3 chain (.043 gauge).
I did the same. Dony had a great video to upgrade to .050 Guage. Actually my dealer swapped out the bar and chain when I bought it. 14" 50 dl (which is same setup as my top handle 020T) Nice
Inspired, I bought the Stihl OEM part and installed in my 021 purchased in mid 90's. Had replaced sprocket cover years ago - that part had hole in it for side adjuster. Bottom line: works, but not nearly as smooth as Dony's. My metal kit parts fit very tightly in plastic part, not as nice as in video. Hopefully over time it will loosen up? Regardless, a great improvement and THANKS for another great video.
Good upgrade..wish they did that to all chainsaws..i have a home lite chainsaw that's about 35 years old..it been a good one I've never had a problem with it until now..the bar hold down bolt has stripped out..which isn't a big problem you just have to disassemble the saw to replace it..thanks for showing this..see you on the next one..Cheers 🍻🍻🍻🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
