You most certainly can, But it's not recommended tho, it's more like " price vs reward" and time plus labor. Accumulator traps alot of moisture and trash from the ac system. And can often result on a cheaper easier to replace clogged "accumulator" being responsible for destroying the more "expensive" compressor. That's why this two parts are often sold together. Like oil and filters. Kind of like get it while your down there type of thing...
If you know what your doing and have to tools, yes. However that being said you can't recover the freon and charge it without an AC recharge machine, so no. You can illegally release the freon because what the government doesn't know won't hurt them, and just swap out the compressor and accumulator but after that's done you still need to have it brought to the shop to have it charged. I'd recommend getting the compressor with a kit, so if the compressor takes a crap then you'll be covered under warranty. Usually some have a one year or two year warranty, so if whoever charged it didn't do it right then you'll be okay.
if it's like earlier models its back left quadrant looking down on engine so closest corner to the front passenger down a bit vertical into the engine along heat shield maybe ~1ft give or take should see small blue cap. was pretty hard to find having no clue what to look for first time.
so removing compressor releases gas in lines then correct?
