      Some of my friends' wives are chanel couture buyers. From them, I know that Chanel has kept up the modern spirit in every couture garments. The fabrics are extraordinarily complicated to work with, state of the art, the various different materials from ribbons, tweed, wool are woven by hand not to mention embroidery and sequins that don't shine and chain construction underneath to keep the jacket falling neatly on the body. You have to look carefully to understand Chanel's DNA which : "no theatrical pieces, no need to show the money above it all stay away from being standout, it doesn't need to be the center of attention, just like a modern art work. It is OK to associate couture with avant garde, theatrical, sparkly night gown. If you like such style means: you are not the target market of Chanel couture. My girl friend now obsessed with Chanel but I still cant afford couture for her.

    I'm finding it increasingly difficult to see a defining/cohesive theme in a lot of these shows. Viard is not a bad designer but she certainly is not of the calibre needed for Chanel to maintain its preeminent position in the world of Haute Couture. Many of these designs could easily have been adapted for larger volume production rather than Haute Couture. Haute Couture should be almost "otherworldly". This collection was tasteful and refined but lacked the magic spark that makes Paris Haute Couture so special.

    • @chuvietha2466
      @chuvietha2466 2 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Couldn’t agree with you more! I don’t find this collection haute couture or any other collections done by Viard. I just saw a bunch of anything that she could devise but didn’t see the real theme which should have been delivered more distinctly to the audience. She really needs to show her true inspiration.

    • @jorgkukla8097
      @jorgkukla8097 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      I fully agree! In fact, there was nothing special that catched the eye or the famous airyness of Chanel. Wearable it is, but nothing more; if I were a client, I would ask myself: on what should you spend the money? Even decency knows its limits: then it gets boring.

      I miss the gold era of Chanel with the amazing scenarios under the Grand palais

    • @modfus
      @modfus 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@cesarmoz3449 Yeah they were spectacles - although I don't consider Lagerfeld to be one of the greatest designers. He was an excellent stylist with an encyclopedic knowledge of design - but he is not part of that exclusive club of designers (Vionnet, Poiret, Chanel, Balenciaga, Dior, Givenchy, St.Laurent, even Gaultier) who all created new, original, and very recognizable aesthetics. Lagerfeld was a brilliant interpreter of the zeitgeist; he saw trends long before many of his contemporaries, but given his long and extremely successful career, there really wasn't a unique "Lagerfeld look" - apart from his own very contrived and carefully choreographed appearance. Having said all that, Lagerfeld did have a love for excess and indulgent luxury - which fitted perfectly with the Haute Couture. Virginie Viard doesn't appear to have the same overindulgent spirit which probably explains why her Couture creations are much less extravagant.

    • @LizLyonsPhD
      @LizLyonsPhD 2 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      Nope, I don't agree at all. I saw a theme of colors (black, white, pink, green, silver) and shapes (fitted bodices, flowing skirts), minimal accessorizing but lots of delicate sparkle. Sophisticated, attainable (except in price for most), wearable beauty.

    No accessories: hand bags, evening purses, chain jewelry,
    bracelets, brooches, long gloves, Shoes!!
    Boots on some Killed the outfit
    Same for Floppy hats.
    Girls looked tired and uninspired..
    Fall colors, none, Cruise wear,
    none. Knits and Sweaters, none.
    Great Winter hats, none.

      Kathleen, it’s never too late, just look at Iris Apfel for inspiration. She’s amazing! And most of the original supermodels are still on the catwalk. Most high street fashion retailers use models of all ages, shapes and sizes now. I used to dream about this too so I understand. I never had the confidence and would probably have tripped up or stumbled 🫣😂 there’s a book called ‘it’s never too late to be what you might have been’ …

    Feels 70’s Halston/Diane Von Furstenburg. I’m going to agree with previous comments that it doesn’t seem Haute Couture but it is highly cohesive. Is it possible they were trying for a paired down collection?

    I wish designers would give up on the tired, old sheer-over-panty look, women just don’t want to wear it. The black dress with the beautiful diamond-patterned beaded bodice would be perfect over a long, floaty but opaque skirt, but the two skirt lengths break up the line. I really want to just tweak every design I like here. The green suit would be great if the jacket were three inches shorter, for example, to waist length. The long, boxy jacket over the very long doesn’t flatter the proportions, even on those 6-foot models, and a shorter jacket would highlight the waist.

    We say "No." to the clown pants, overly boxy jackets that conceal any hint of a woman's waist and the slovenly long pants. Come back when you have something that doesn't look like I need to take it to my magical seamstress. Yes to 2 coats. What the hell is going on with the "futuristic peasant dresses"? We do like the hint of leaf and feather, but, Baby, less is more. 🚀🚀🚀

    Most of these clothes had the effect of ageing the wearer. When a collection of gobsmackingly beautiful women look frumpy in your clothes, that’s a sign that you might want to rethink things. A few lovely evening wear pieces, but too little, too late.

      I agree. The idea of haute couture as costuming for the most over the top look is not really apropos for our time. Every season should be defined by the feeling tone of the "air" of the times. A return to the beautifully classic in a time of chaos is I think, perfect synchronicity. These are gorgeous clothes calling out to the future with that touch of minimal fuss and flattering cut to the female form. It appeals to the role that women are assuming more and more in the world. These are clothes, for the most part, that would have the attention of women who aspire to more than frothy. Who want to look chic, but not 'costumed' nor like a little girl in a fantasy dress dependent and confectionary. I certainly approve. Brava!!

    I wish I knew someone working at Chanel to show them those commentaries. I can't believe how they choose to ignore it since Karl's passing, blocking the comments section at their own channel. You can say "oh, but the buyers still buying, so why should we care about internet reactions?", but remember, fashion houses can be on fashion one time and completely forgotten next. Chanel is huge, If not the biggest, but how long can the brand rely on it's past glory? How long until the fashionable girls from Instagram stop posting about it?

    Boredom... And the feeling that these things are not about young women (70% of the collection) and not about high fashion, and some models could be in Zara, of course nice to see references to the great Mademoiselle in the form of bows and other things, but after the death of Lagerfeld the house was something passé, the same problem, by the way, in Dior. I am in no way belittling the work of the employees of the Chanel House, just by design it seems as if it were some sort of H&M or Zara. Facelessness.

Ok it might not be up some people's idea of Couture standards, but I can see women buying them. 20, 30- something women are not the only ones who buy Couture, rtw, etc... I would like Virginie to be celebrated as one of the few woman to be the head of a major fashion house! ( I also don't like the runway gimmicks, the horse!? Sophisticated, attainable (except in price for most), wearable beauty.] and would readily duplicate many of these pieces in my wardrobe for the next two years. Brava Viard!
