What is the difference between ‘clause’ and ‘sentence’?

I have loosely used the word 'modifier' to mean 'verb dependent'. To be precise, however, verbs have two kinds of dependent:
1) complements (a necessary dependent);
2) modifiers (adjuncts) (an optional dependent)
