At least one c40-8m is preserved at the Alberta Railway Museum, which is extremely lucky, although unfortunately most if not all the other ones are probably going to be scrapped.
This is so devastating. I absolutely love these locomotives so much that I wish they were left alone and I wish people had a chance to see them. And it’s so upsetting to hear about what’s happening.
Pretty amazing that a few are still running. I’ve seen some recent shots of 4609 and 2466 in service. But I’m pretty sure 2456 was spotted headed to Chicago Heights last week to be scrapped.
God damnit... I was really hoping to see one before the entire fleet was scrapped. Rest In Peace, former Cowls, Farewell! You served the lines very well for a good 3 decades.
Sebastian Floyd CN owns all of the BC Rail C40-8Ms. They have been selling those and the CN ones to scrap over the past couple months. Only a few are still operating today.
Good news one bcrail remains In service on home rail in bc working the yard in quesnel BC. Also is there any buyers for there engines or all going to the scrap heap
Somehow a CN C40-8M is in California. Edit: It’s still here lol Edit: It left :( Edit: bruh a BCOL c40-8m came to California Edit: BCOL is heading out but has been in Cali for a week
Despite disliking both railroads, I love the locomotives. I recently bought the only available 8-40CM on eBay with plans on purchasing two more and have buy some MLW locomotive shells (616, SD variants) through shapeway. Looking to keeping their history alive in model railroading.
What a shame. I only caught one (2415). Hopefully one of the BCR units makes it to preservation. Pretty insane how some are already 30 years old. Now I feel super old even though I’m only 18.
Will they be scrapping the normal Dash 8s they have? They are pretty similar, other than the body type and trucks. If they aren't scrapping the normal ones, why these?
As of October, 2020, I've been getting extremely disturbing reports that not only has CN sold off their C40-8M's for scrap, they're selling off the EX ATSF/BNSF C40-8W's, along with the EX LMSX C40-8W's. As a Conrail fan, I am extremely disappointed in this, as I've already dealt with the same thing happening with Norfolk Southern's C40-8W's being sold for scrap earlier this year!
They are not scrapping them all. At least not yet. There were a few that did get sold for scrap (presumably ones that were in worse shape), but the rest are still on the roster. Most of them are in storage right now but a bunch have returned to service as traffic levels rise back to normal.
So now what, is it literally going to be straight GEVOs? I mean it already was lol. Maybe we’ll get an sd75 or sd70m leading once or twice a week lol but bruh
Question to ask Railroad Companies: Why? Why would you scrap such Beautiful locomotives? I’ll tell you, Cowl Bodied locomotives look much better then your Utilitarian locomotives that All Look the Same.
@@danielfantino1714, they took forever to load. They rocked like you wouldn't believe and were a very uncomfortable ride. The interiors fell apart pretty quick too. Of course, they were a vast improvement over the Dash 7s, which were designed by some mad scientist, and I won't ever get into U boats. Overall, the Dash 8s were junk and faster they scrap those miserable rattle traps, the better.
@@gregwasserman2635thanks a lot Grég, always good to have crew impressions, cause that´s where you "live"..interesting also feedbacks from mechanics. Railfans love / hate affair is rather subjective. I remember in summer 79, ya, a "few" decades ago, in CP cab of 4744, the unique M640 now preserved when she stalled in Montréal Hochelaga grade. A rather stiff climb that start in Moreau yard against Montreal´s harbor entrance, pass along closed Angus shop. It was a transfer job to St Luc yard. Full throttle the poor beast went slower and slower, a few inches at a time, then 1 and finally 0. The exhaust sound straight below Rachel street overpass. Wheel slip light flashing non stop, the sound...sand did nothing. So heavy that loco, no vibrations, nothing unlike bouncing switchers. Ah souvenirs of youth...finally 3 RS3 pushed us and the grade was hardly conquered. Oups...tonnage miscalculation.... Be safe Greg
Minus CN 44 & 70 tons, those cowl units or Draper Taper were the first GE in Canada and for that reason, at least one should have been preserved. Railroads have their own accounting strategy about donations. Museums and heritage world have their own universe or reasons for accepting or refusing. Only your wallet left. Good luck...or N, HO scale. Crying brings nowhere...sorry. that´s reality.
As of July 2022, a majority the CN’s Dash 8 fleet has been either sold or scrapped.

AB Trains & Elevators As of September I believe a handful are still out and about, but they are definitely rarer than they used to be.
No !!! They were one of my favorite locomotives on the fleet ☹
Great compilation.
Never seen one in action.
Thanks for capturing them and putting this archive together as a sweet memorial. 😊
6:35 Can never get enough of that iconic and also nostalgic K5H horn. More railroads in North America should use it.
POV that one day railfaning you miss
One of my favorite locomotives. Sad to see them go. They were getting pretty old and bad for the crews though. Farewell C40-8M's!
goodbye =)
And here we are in May 2022 and BCOL 4609, IC 2466, IC 2456, CN 2100, and CN 2001 are fully active in regular service
Pretty amazing that a few are still running. I’ve seen some recent shots of 4609 and 2466 in service. But I’m pretty sure 2456 was spotted headed to Chicago Heights last week to be scrapped.

I was fortunate enough to chase BCOL 4610 in 2018. Sad to see these go.
Geez Sam.... you're gonna make my cry 😥😋 Beautiful shots and a lovely tribute to these classic locomotives!
Alberta Bound Railfanning Thanks!
SamLovesTrains BC Rail is not retiring their C40-8Ms and also CN is not retiring their C40-8Ms
Sebastian Floyd CN owns all of the BC Rail C40-8Ms. They have been selling those and the CN ones to scrap over the past couple months. Only a few are still operating today.
Are you serious? I loved these locos especially the BC paint used to always be a great sight on CN
As of January 2020, do you know how many are left?
Are there any more of them?
Obviously not if this is a goodbye video 😂
Great video compilation Sam! Thank you for putting this video together and sharing it with us!
Thomas Mackowiak Thanks! No problem!
Not to long ago I saw a C40-8M puling a 6 engine stack train
Nice i bought 4 of them from rapido in n scale i love them
It so sad that their retiring these. Those locos lasted longer than the csx standard cab c40-8.
Good news one bcrail remains In service on home rail in bc working the yard in quesnel BC. Also is there any buyers for there engines or all going to the scrap heap
The last day of Ge Canadian Locomotives C40-8m it a very Sad
Well they lasted this long. But not all will be scrapped. Some have been sold but I'm glad I got shots of what was left. Great video Sam!
TWIGYBNSF Thank you! On the CRO Facebook group, they said that none of them sold. Hopefully you’re right though.
@@SamLovesTrains I don't know where or who said that but I could be wrong but some did sell from word of mouth
I love the old bc rail C40-8M's.
Luckily there are still some left. In my area I see some still, so that's good! Hopefully they *all* don't get scrapped any time soon.
+SamLovesTrains Very sad I never got a chance to see one :(

At least one ex-BC Rail C40-8m has been preserved at the Alberta Railway Museum and is said to be restored back to it's original paint scheme.
At least I did see one trailing on NS 64H.
What a shame. I only caught one (2415). Hopefully one of the BCR units makes it to preservation. Pretty insane how some are already 30 years old. Now I feel super old even though I’m only 18.
Thankfully, one actually has.
I will miss them! Hopefully a railway museum picks them up!
DiamondMaster2.0 No one bought them. So CN is scrapping them. Unless they decided to preserve one.
I’m gonna miss these engines. they look like f59ph but freight edition
I don’t want to see C40-8M’s go!, They should make AC44C6M
Or an ES44DCM
@@CTTrains193 that’ll be cool
@@CTTrains193and or AC40C8M
Dang. But Does anyone know what CN plans to do with their C44-9WLs?
Will they be scrapping the normal Dash 8s they have? They are pretty similar, other than the body type and trucks. If they aren't scrapping the normal ones, why these?
I know they’ve sold a couple Dash 8s off. But I’m not sure what’ll happen with the rest.

MBRailfan Well in that case, I’m glad I’m wrong! Haha. Thanks for the correction.
It’s literally my favorite engine but I can’t catch it on any freight cause I live by a local line only :(
For me it doesn’t matter because in my opinion it’s pretty much just like a freight version of a P42 Genesis
I was gonna make something kinda like this😂 Nice video tho lol
its very sad to see them go, I never got the chance to see one
c&m sub railfanner Yeah they were neat locomotives.
Same

That's a good shot in the rain at 7:23. Is that lightning?
Yes
Just seen bcr 4603 in edson ab today
you can see in this video how their hours were numbered. frames were in bad shape
I remember when new they always looked with downward bent frame. They were builted that way. Probably optical illusion.
18:20 where is that?
Metra f40phm-2 Wall Street in Lake Villa.

Damn all the loco’s are dying off
Have you asked em if they could save 1
Railroad,Preserver,2000 No one purchased them during the sale. So now CN is scrapping them unless they decide to preserve one.
one ex BCOL survived and is preserved in Alberta
They aren’t all gone yet, only a portion of the fleet was sold off
AmtrakNickFilms I heard that all of them are going to scrap.
I wish people would stop teasing me about not seeing a CN barn
oh sorry to hear that
What took the CN so long to get rid of those monstrosities? I know the CN crews hated them as much as we did, maybe more.
Can you explain Greg why they were disliked. Not being a railroader your comments will be helpful. Thanks in advance.
