    Another good topic. I think a lot of times the tendency to go too gain heavy on guitars comes from guitarists practicing on their own as opposed to with a band the majority of the time and mistaking a lack of gain + low end for bad tone. It becomes a habit to compensate for this when dialing in a sound and then, when it comes time to start getting into recording (especially if that player is new to the process), they unintentionally carry over these habits and end up muddying up the mix, not realizing that the band itself will fill a lot of those holes in the guitars sound (and for the better!).

  • @Thirteen31Music
    @Thirteen31Music ปีที่แล้ว +30

    One trick iv used is to pan your gain tracks L & R and then have a much cleaner / on edge of breakup guitar in the centre. Makes the guitars sound fatter adds clarity to all the notes in the chords and takes away some of thin fizziness you get from a lot of gain.

    OMG, why have I NEVER thought of dialing in effects while I'm listening to the mix?? I've always done it while the track is stopped.

  • @ryndanriley5348
    @ryndanriley5348 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    You can see this a little in your full mix examples, but it's also important to know gain on any one instrument in the mix is multiplied by gain on another instrument in a mix. So if you have a little gain on two guitars, it will sound like both guitars have a medium amount of gain. Gain on any guitar track is gain added to the song as a whole. You almost always need less gain on each guitar than you're using if you have multiple guitar tracks.

    • @SugarpillProd
      @SugarpillProd  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      100%. Even things like having a distorted bass tone can make the guitar sound seem a lot heavier / more distorted than it really is.

  • @javihernandez2755
    @javihernandez2755 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    The only place where I believe this metal-ish tone might be justified is in some hybrid subgenres like ADTR-style easycore, but after watching your video I'm sure that even for them, the brighter parts (choruses and such) use this kind of lighter distorsion

    • @SugarpillProd
      @SugarpillProd  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      For sure, with Easycore you'd want to take a different approach, as the metalcore element influences the production a lot more.

    • @javihernandez2755
      @javihernandez2755 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SugarpillProd True. I'd always thought the main "core" factor on those bands were the screams, double bass drums and breakdowns, but actually it's true that guitar production changes a lot

    I really think the Neural DSP of Tim Henson has one of the best pop-punk tones compared to Nameless, Noli, and Cali Suite. It's very underrated and doesn't have that much distortion, assuming one doesn't over-tone or distort it. Of course they can all be toned in a way to sound less distorted for pop-punk tones, but Tim Henson's amp is overlooked as a pop-punk tone, especially since Neural is targeted mainly at heavy distortion metal heads lol.

  • @Randuski
    @Randuski ปีที่แล้ว +1

    you wanna use the least amount of distortion you can get away with, always gives you a better mix. with heavier stuff like metal, you might need a little more for pick squeels, but still, the least amount of gain you can get away with

  • @SWLDguitar1
    @SWLDguitar1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You also need to lower the bass (knob not instrument) in your gritty channel for recording. Kind of goes hand and hand with gain.

    In my opinion, the cleaner the tone, the more a high-end specification guitar is required, as such guitars tend to provide excellent resolution and an appealing sound. However, these guitars are often expensive. It seems that individuals using mid-range to budget guitars may unconsciously emphasize distortion to compensate for these limitations.

  • @bushleague3472
    @bushleague3472 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Boogie Dual Recs make punk guitars sound crappy IMO. To be more precise, because there is very little open space in punk, that huge low end smothers the bass, and IMO the scooped mids just sound weird. If you EQ out the low end and get it to work in the mix, all you've got left is a thin, high pitched fizzy tone, like the early Blink stuff. Other than a few exceptions that I can think of, when you mix Mesa Boogies and punk you either get a weird mix, or weird tone.

    • @SugarpillProd
      @SugarpillProd  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I tend to agree. I think that's why Blink used the bi-amp method for their later records, as the Marshall was able to fill in the gaps from the Mesa tone.

    • @bushleague3472
      @bushleague3472 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SugarpillProd Yeah, for sure. Its funny because everyone associates Tom with Mesa for some reason, but his tone got infinately better once he started using a Marshall as well. There are a couple 10 ft Pole albums that sound like they used Boogies, and theres nothing glaringly wrong with the mix or the guitar tone. Even there though, I'm not sure the Boogies actually added anything.

    • @SugarpillProd
      @SugarpillProd  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I think it can work well in a skate punk context - like Pennywise, early Blink, Lagwagon, etc. But if you don't want to sound like an early Fat Wreck / Epitaph release - with that more thrashy edge - then the scooped metal sound never really fits quite right. It does seem to be the default for a lot of people - but my guess is because it sounds better in isolation, than it does in a full mix.

    • @bushleague3472
      @bushleague3472 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SugarpillProd One pop punk band that rocked the Boogies pretty well was Zebrahead, but to me it sounds like they also used pedals quite a bit too. Not a bad idea really, use the Boogie gain to beef up riffage that needs it, use a more manageable pedal gain for everything else.

    • @spark300c
      @spark300c ปีที่แล้ว

      well with me I max the mids. I learn with fuzz pedals if cut out bass before the fuzz you get good mid heavy fuzz tone.
