My grandma bought me the LOTR book for I think my 22nd bday (2002) I read it start to finish. Then the movies came out. She is a huge Tolkien fan and we have spent hours talking about all of his works. Just 2 weeks ago I sat my kids down 8 yr old twins and 7 yr old and we watched the movies over the long weekend. They were so excited to go over to their great grandma's house now in her 80's and talk about how much they loved the story. It's so cool seeing an artist like Tolkien touch so, so many lives over generations!

I'm glad you're able to have that experience. When I got into The Lord of the Rings in the Early 2000s, I was just a 9-year-old child at first. And after the LotR Trilogy I have dreamed, for Nine Whole Years, that The Hobbit would be made into a movie. And I did get my wish in 2012-2014, just not in the way I had thought about. I was sad that The Hobbit wasn't as great as The Lord of the Rings, but I was happy to see that something, a dream of mine, came true at last. When I become a parent, I will most definitely show my children these LotR Books and Movies that I have ever-so grown up with

i remember seeing the cartoon when i was younger , when the movies came out i took my children to see them all. we were often accompanied some of my sons friends. one of my sons friends got the book and let me read it. that was my favorite nightly reading. i was lost in that book as i was lost in books when i was a kid myself.
i loved being able to share those times with my children and their friends as well. i brought my son the video game when it came out too. i have all the extended addition movies on my computer. i often watch them it's funny because i have to start from the Hobbit and watch them all. it takes me about two days to watch them on when i go on my lotr binges lol .

I feel bad for Fili and Kili, killed before they could fully retake their home and actually live like royalty. Also I love Bofur's giant hat.

I like Bofur the most of the elves in the movie. He seemed the most accepting and kinda a "regular" guy from a dwarvish standpoint. His joyful song and dance (in deleted scene) to cheer up the company at Rivendell and his actions after being left behind in Dale, (passed out drunk under the table, thereby missing the boat) helping out with Kili's cure, rather than taking off for wealth and glory, and his turning away with a wink and a nod when Bilbo wanted to leave the mountain makes him seem pretty much a good person. Balin was my fav in the book, for his change of heart and excellent (although often ignored) advice to Thorin.

My favorite of the company is Balin as he'd seen so much. Also his actor, Ken Stott, was very charismatic and served as a nice narrator of sorts, filling in the gaps with knowledge that would otherwise not have been known.

  • @rick9977015

Don't know why, but Bofur was my favorite from the movies. I did like the interaction he had with Bilbo about not having a home when Bilbo tried to leave the company in the cave. Book dwarfs? Fili and Kili of course! Those brothers stayed with their King and Uncle in the battle.

  • @hopegorman2784

Kili and Fili are my favorite dwarves. I liked them in the movies. But what the movies fail to show is that Fili and Kili both died defending Thorin with both shield and body. They gave their lives for their uncle and King.

Balin is my favorite. He seemed to understand Bilbo's importance when other Dwarves complained about him. That is a great character trait and if more dwarves showed good character traits, more people would like them. Ask Helen of The Clueless Fangirl.😂😆🤪

My favorite dwarf is definitely Dwalin. Why? Well he is a brutal and savage fighter for starters. He slays orcs by the hundreds. He was also the first to arrive at Bilbo's house, he got an extra helping of food which fortified his body and the fish being brain food, made him the most intelligent of all of them rivaling only Balin. Dwalin has also a sense of humor despite sometimes being rather surly at times. He is by far the most sensible dwarf. But above all, he is totally loyal and devoted to the success of the quest. Moreover, he is one of the only ones to challenge the authority of Thorin when he was acting like a greedy child worse than Alfred. Last but not least, his endurance and strength allowed his to outlast most of his kin, for he survived all the battles. My other favourites are Dain and Gimli.

It really upsets me that Thorin, Fili and Kili died from their quest of Erebor while the other inferior dwarves of the company survived. How I wish Thorin and his young nephews won the battle and live and gave a second chance to the Lonely Mountain to thrive again under his kingship. He did refused to stand for his oath to the people of Dale however spare a Hobbit by giving the Mithril vest to Bilbo *before* the war. Thorin is not wise enough to reclaim their Home. I hate him and I felt sorry on him at the same time.

As a sidenote, we do get some additions (completely unofficial and non-canonical) to the lore of Thorin's companions in material for The One Ring Roleplaying Game. In the supplement 'The Heart of the Wild' (and its companion 'The Darkening of Mirkwood') we learn of Bofri son of Bofur, who desires to restore the old Dwarf Road through Mirkwood Forest. This does not go well for the young Dwarf in the main timeline of the game.
We get a bit more in 'Erebor: The Lonely Mountain'. Gloin becomes Erebor's main ambassador to the rebuilt Esgaroth. Oin is something of a healer and also acts as an emissary for King Dain. Bifur is said to be the son of a smith from the iron Hills and oversees the trade to and from the Lonely Mountain. Bofur is a miner by trade and oversees the mining operations of Erebor. Bombur, brother to Bofur and cousin to Bifur, collects news and rumors and acts as an advisor to Dain. Balin sits on the King's Council as an elder statesman. Dori establishes himself as a merchant. Dwalin is the informal head of Dain's Stone Guard. Ori is a scribe, devoted to the study of the lore of his people. Nori has become a highly skilled toy-maker.
As I stated, non of this is official canon, but it's fun to see how Tolkien's legendarium has been interpreted for the RPG.

I actually don't mind that Peter Jackson split the Hobbit into three parts, I just wish the extra time was used on things that actually mattered. Instead of adding new characters that weren't in the story and putting in a terrible love triangle subplot, they could've explored the individual personalities and backstories of each dwarf. But nope, in the end only four or five of them actually mattered at all. I couldn't even remember all of their names let alone care about them.

I read The Lord of the Rings when the movies came out. That was over twenty years ago. I wanted to be familiar with the story before I saw the movies. I saw Ralph Bakshi's animated version forty-three years ago and the Rankin/Bass versions of The Hobbit and The Return of the King in 1977 and 1980.

    Here's Thorin's summary I believe
Thorin would have been born in
    2746 TA
Would be 24 in the year Smaug attacked (2770 TA)
In the year 2790 TA when Thror dies he would be 44
53 at the battle of Azanulbizar (2799 TA)
Then in 2850 TA which is 51 years later Thrain disappears and Thorin becomes king at the age of 104
And then there's a 91 year gap until Thorin meets Gandalf at the age of 195
in 2941 TA which is also the year of his death only about 6 months later I guess

Ori, Nori and Dori are ALL brothers. It's just Bifur that are strictly cousins with their sound-alike named dwarves. Though Balin and Dwalin, Oin and Gloin are cousins to Thorin while Ori, Nori and Dori are distantly related to him.

I always wondered the following. How did the dwarves who attended the council of Elrond to include gloin not know about the fate of Moria? We’re there not contacts between the two kingdoms while the expedition was somewhat successful? Also how did the dwarves from erebor arrive to Rivendell? Would they not have attempted to make contact with the khazad dum expedition if they were heading in that direction anyway?

    • @istari0
      @istari0 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

None of the dwarves in Moria survived to take word back to Erebor and there was no dwarves even somewhat regularly going from Erebor to Moria. Moria is also much farther south than Rivendell so it would have been a major detour. The primary purpose of the dwarves that went to Rivendell was to report their contact with an emissary of Sauron seeking information to help find the One Ring.

The various animations were even worse in that regard, which is why if there ever any new animated versions of Tolkien's legendarium I hope they are done by a Japanese studio (Studio Ghibli would be ideal) and not Hollywood (since Hollywood believes all animation should be aimed at preschool to kindergarten age children).

Norse mythology certainly isn't Christian, but Tolkein was a committed Catholic. One doesn't have to be of a particular faith tradition in order to study and explore it, though as with Christanity, the iterations seen today differ from in times past.
