      I think that because of that you get to know and like Balin in The Hobbit films (with Ken Stott's portrayal of the wise and lovable dwarf), The finding of his tomb in Moria makes it even sadder and feel for Gimli when he cries at the tomb (as I get that they were close being his dad's cousin).

    The opening lines were the saddest lines I read in the whole LOTR. Hard to believe that Dain would ever give permission to Balin and Company to re-enter Moria, but he did so reluctantly, as reported by Gloin at the last and greatest Council of the free races in Middle Earth. Dain must have surely informed Balin of Durin's Bane and Balin under the allure of the rings, foolishly ignored the warning to him and his followers doom.
    Good one Yoystan, as always. My weekly fix of fantasy.

    • @valen123456
      @valen123456 6 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      The Book version implies that Balin "listened too long to the whispers" about Moria and resolved to go and eventually persuaded Dain to let him. Since Balin was a relative of the royal line (and a lord in his own right) he would have had the claim and authority to do so.
      I think i prefer the movie depiction of him as a wise and gentle councillor, and in line with this I suspect he volunteered to lead the expedition in order to keep the peace and prevent the real hot-heads who wanted to leave from causing problems that an outright refusal on Dain's part might have caused. In this depiction he would have been just as unwilling to go, but went anyway to keep his people safe. And unfortunately it still did not work and he was the first to fall. Which makes my idea even more tragic really.

But I don't care what people think about the hobbit trilogy . It was awesome . great explanations in the video! I've got 2 bones to pick:
    - why Balin, of all dwarves, would want to go on such foolish quest to claim Moria? seeing he was the wisest of them and not swayed by riches, as portrayed in the hobbit when he tells Thorin that it wasn't necessary to reclaim Erebor.
    - if the dwarves of Moria had been mining Mithril, how did they not make freaking mithril armor and survive the onslaught??
    ok rant over.

    • @SantomPh
      @SantomPh 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Balin heard whispers that Moria was safe to return to (probably spread by Sauron's agents) and was excited to claim it. He had a strong bloc of support so Dain Ironfoot reluctantly let him go. All Dwarves ache to return to Khazad-dûm,even those that had never been there. Dain was wiser to ignore the whispers.
      Mithril is found very deep in the mines, deeper than Balin and his company had ever gone. It is also very rare, and even rarer when found in large amounts.
      Frodo's mail-shirt is one of the few mithril items made for the full body, and a very kingly gift from Thorin-implying that even the King didn't have mithril armor.
      In fact until the end of Return of the King, the only known mithril apart from Frodo's coat is the mithril helmets of the Tower and Fountain Guards, as well as mithril woven into Aragorn's flag.

What seems to be the best of my adventures behind me, battered of body but settled in my hall with wife and child, every breeze every distance sound brings reminders of the times of glory in my life and calls, however faintly, that all the glory might not yet be gone. God! This epilogue is, for the most part, a happy one (except for Balin's end. That Dwarf, above all the rest, did not deserve the ending he got). It just makes me want to cry listening to how all the Dwarves finished their lives long after the Battle of Five Armies depicted in the final Hobbit film. Brings tears to my eyes, in fact, because the story of these twelve Dwarves is really the story of your average Military Veteran in real life. Sure, we're all heroes in our own way... but many of us simply... fade to nothingness, and wind up forgotten in history. From that standpoint, I'm sure JRR Tolkien, with personal experience, knew exactly how that emptiness felt.
    I will watch this video again on Veterans' Day. Because it hits me in just that exact spot in my heart...

      Middle Earth would’ve been screwed if either Smaug or Durins Bane took the ring as they likely would’ve joined Sauron. I always wondered why sauron didn’t try to get Durins Bane as an ally since he did have a higher ranking while both were serving morgoth

      Éfar Isti Durins bane isn’t a dwarf, it’s the balrog that Gandalf faced. It got that name by killing Durin the 6th and forcing the dwarves to flee Moria over 1,000 years before the events of the lord of the rings

      oh right, sorry my mistake I just misinterpreted "Bane" ... I did not even interpret it at all. -_-.
      But in this case, I think they must already be allies, Sauron was and remains the lieutenant of Morgoth and after his disappearance, the most powerful evil being that exists so I think the allegiance of the Balrog in Sauron goes from itself.

    As foolish as it seems for them to try and reclaim Moria, it makes sense why they did. They just got done reclaiming Erebor where a dragon had just got killed and they saw victory in the Battle of the Five Armies. They must've felt unstoppable after that.

    In the time Balin and his company held the 21st hall of Moria, they also held (for a short year or two), the 1st hall located at the eastern edge facing Lothlorien which included the region where the still intact bridge of khazad dum was. If Balin might have had more time more dwarves may have come to support him. This is speculation on my part of course but it is safe to assume given more time Moria could have been filled with dwarven soldiers. Eventually they would have been faced with the balroq themselves and likely had to abandon the quest anyway.

    • @SantomPh
      @SantomPh 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Dwarves were mostly skeptical about Balin's recolonization and likely did not want to join him there. Dain himself warned Thror that another power other than the Dwarves would have to free Khazad-dum. Gimli says the messages came and went from Moria for a while but after they stopped no Dwarf wanted to investigate.

    I know this is not cannon but I asked Graham McTavish (The actor who played Dwalin; in case anyone was wonder his role, and didn't want to look him up ;) ) what he thought his version of Dwalin did after Thorin had passed and Bilbo had left. He answered that; the way he played him, Dwalin would most likely leave the lonely mountain and become a 'lone wolf' after the loss of his king, Thorin. It was heart breaking to think but it was also interesting to see what the actors and writers made of these characters. Giving them more personality in the movies. I just wish more of that was explored in the movies than other added things. Again I know this is not cannon. I just wanted to see what he thought the version of the character he played would do. I would love to know the answers by the other Dwarves that were played.

    Dwarves literally don't get sick except for injuries, most injuries that don't kill them outright heal, their only widespread medical problem is obesity, and obesity doesn't even make them sick like it does most humans. This weird little factoid never ceases to amaze me. Dwarves are basically indestructible.

    I know it's not that big a deal, but it's my 'curse' to notice things like this ... on the map at 3:00 (not sure where the map comes from, although it does look a lot like one I bought from a bookstore in my college town years ago) - to the right of the red circle, Dimrill Dale is misspelled as Drimrill Dale. Like I said, no big deal, but I can never not say anything about stuff like that. It doesn't detract though from your video, which is very interesting, I must say - and since odds are you didn't make the map, I shouldn't really care anyway.
