- Hey guys!
This is my 10-pound ultralight backpacking kit I took with me as I hiked the first section of the Pacific Crest Trail in February 2024. I consider this a full comfort setup that would be great for an overnight or thru-hiking the PCT, AT, CDT, or really any long trail. If you are interested in any of the gear in this video check out the links below.

Not sure what’s more fun: starting a gear company with a buddy, or twinning your entire gear load out with your homie 😂
🤣there is quite a bit of overlap!
Hey hey! You finally showed up in my TH-cam algorithm.
Great meeting and running with you in January at the WI Frozen Butt Hang.
Thanks for sharing the kit. Excited to see you, Darwin, and the Evolve gear out in the wild.🎉
Hey Micah! It was great sharing some miles with you. Hopefully we can meet up again sometime soon!
I just got my Mirage Hoody. Hiked in it today and loved it. You guys had yours on, so I had to try it out. Good to meet you and thanks for lunch.
Awesome Tim! It was great meeting you and thanks again for the ride!!
I appreciate your openness and honesty about the pack and your ownership interest, and pretty classy to not bash your old pack. I love my Nashville Pack but think competition is good and part of progress for the whole hiking community. The more innovation and options, the better.
Thanks for the response! Competition only benefits the hiking community and I think both companies have a lot to offer. I still really like all my Nashville products and have a good relationship with the team over there. I hope they continue to grow and succeed in the outdoor market.
Really enjoyed your gear videos...before you started plugging your own gear. I'm glad to hear an update about the R7 though, I bought one on your recommendation and I was curious how it holds up over time.
Hey Andy, thanks for tuning in. Only part of my kit is from stuff we make. It's not just because I own the company, it really is some of the best stuff out there. Always have to be testing. The R7 is still holding up strong, still not a better UL jacket out there!
Super interested in that pad attachment for the ranger! Is that just extra shock cord attached to the ranger and tied around some of the loops?
Yessir! Just a little toggle on the end to tighten and loosen.
Is that Evolved Active Hat going to be available in different colors or juat that olive(?) color? Currently looking for a breathable hat to with the mirage.
There will be two color options, the grey that I’m wearing and a green that Darwin is wearing. Targeting mid-March to release.
Do you find the Nike running tights to be warmer or commensurate to Patagonia capilene? Also, how are you using your trekking pole as a camera mount? Thanks, and keep up the good work.
Thanks for tuning in! I haven’t used the Capeline, I know they used to have different weights of tights. They are probably similar. I use the Ultrapod tripod available on Amazon and it has a longer Velcro strap. I attach the tripod to my trekking pole using the strap for added height
I really like the Ranger but every time I look at other packs I find myself not wanting to give up the vest style straps. Did you miss that when switching to the Ranger?
Hey William! I thought I would miss them more than I did. Both packs were equally comfortable to carry all day. The Nashville Pack just puts most of the weight on your chest and lower back while The Ranger distributes the weight more on the top of your back and shoulders as well as your lower back. Both are great, just different styles. Cheers!
You mind telling me if you used a bear vault with that pack?
And if so, which size and where did you put it on your pack?
You don't need the bear vault till Horseshoe Meadows. 700 miles in.
I haven't used a bear can with the Ranger yet. It will fit a BV450 or you can use the Y-strap to attach a bear can to the top of the pack.
Great stuff as always, Ajay! Now that you're back will we see you at Canoecopia again this year? ;-)
Thanks Rod! I’ll be there with Darwin with a booth for Evolved. We will be right next to Danny at Superior Gear and Enlightened Equipment. Hope to see you there!
@@juicehikes5436, Sweet! Can't wait to see you again and meet Darwin!👍
Have fun amigo !
Thanks Thoth!
Would be curious if you have tried the XOSkin toe socks. Ive been impressed with them so far
Haven’t tried them. Maybe I’ll check them out! Thanks
Are the sizing for the sun hoodie still the same on the supply co website? I’m a little smaller than you. Normally size medium. But you suggest I get size small?
Hey Mike, we did change the sizing in late 2023 so the first version size medium is now the size small. I wear the size small of the new version and it works really well for me.
Guess, you are not a "near" daily vlogger.
You are not a frequent vlogger, I guess I will look forward to your summary videos.
However, I'm really enjoying the "frequent" vloggers(Lil Chap, Hiker Dancer, Heard Hiker, Fought on foot...etc.).
Those vid's on the PCT really "takes us there" on the trail.
Especially, for Angelenos and West coasters.
Our weather is your trail weather, and it's amazing when caught on video.
Not hating on "after the fact" vids, but it's just not the same.
No, I'm not a daily vlogger. I'm also not thru-hiking the PCT this year. The gear list was just for a section of the PCT but could easily be used as a thru-hiking kit. I just released the trip video today th-cam.com/video/7J7BxPKlltM/w-d-xo.html.
I do like the Nashville Packs better.
Nashville makes great packs!
Where did you get the altaplex tarp??????
Zpacks used to sell it but discontinued it. One of their best products IMO!
get a pocket tarp and modify it
Gear load out or evolve advertisement? Hmmm still enjoyed it…
I always do at least one gear loadout video a year. It's just Evolved to include quite a bit of our own gear. Always testing!
You got micro-spikes, right?
I do but didn’t bring them for this section.
You could not fit a normal sized bear canister into that backpack. I also doubt that food for a week would fit, even if it is empty. Through-hiking with a pack smaller than a daypack does not seem like a rational choice.
The Ranger is a 45L pack with plenty of room if your gear is dialed in. I had 5 days of food and full comfort items with room to spare. Lots of people carry smaller packs than this on thru hikes. It fits a BV450 on the inside and you can attach a larger bear can on the top. There are only a few places in the US that it’s necessary to carry a bear can so that’s not much of a concern. Pretty rational choice for a pack as far as I’m concerned.
@@juicehikes5436 it probably depends on your daily consumption and height, I am 6'2'' and my food takes up a lot more room. I have a Copper Spur 2 person tent, Western mountaineering sleeping bag and I can hardly fit everything into a 60L pack.
@@NVIK5 possibly but I’m 6’1 and consume 3000-4000 calories a day. Your tent and sleeping bag take up a lot more room than the Altaplex tent and Enlightened Equipment quilt I carried on this trip though. Also how you pack your largest volume items can have a lot of impact. Tons of people have completed thru hikes on all the major trails using this pack.
LOL, 2 days of battery life NOT good. My garmin gets weeks and that's with using the GPS function frequently each week for running and Crossfit. Why any hiker would use an apple watch is mind boggling.
I used Garmins for over a decade (both the Fenix and Forerunner) and just recently switched to the Apple Watch Ultra. They both have their drawbacks, battery life being one of them for the Apple Watch. As an everyday smart watch though the Apple Watch is just better. If I was hiking for 3-4 months straight and the main purpose was only to track activities I would probably opt for the Garmin with significantly better battery.
you bag contents are about 2K more than I can afford ps. IMO Darwin copied my EVLV WAYMARK pack thanks for sharing though 😊
Haha, Darwin designed the Waymark EVLV for Mark and then Mark never paid him a dime for it. You may want to know the facts before you use words like “copied.”
You should carry out all of your waste instead of burying it in holes. Bad for the environment and wildlife.
So it can just be buried somewhere else?
You know, if it was just you and not that cringe lord Darwin, I’d buy your gear.
You don't have to like Darwin to like our gear. But it is odd to dislike someone you don't know.
@@juicehikes5436 People dislike Hitler and Voldemort. It’s completely rational. I do like you though.
Ah, it's cool. I'd prefer that people who use terms like "cringe lord" not use our gear anyways.
