- NASCAR is a team sport much like many of professional sporting leagues around the world. Some of their teams have been around for over half a century, while others just entered the garage in the last few years.
This is NASCAR Team History. Much like many of our other videos, we look to do a deep dive into the history of NASCAR. In this series, we focus on the teams that field your favorite drivers.
Today we look at one of the true Rise, Fall, and Rise again teams in NASCAR, Roush Fenway Keselowski Racing.
I appreciate all your support, thanks so much!

🚨 Penske will be the next team featured. Let me know your honorable mentions for them below! The poll that is going up will be for the team after Penske! Thanks y’all! 🔥😎
Hi
Newman is 2019-2021
@@DuddleBug5not off to a hot start with this one 😂
Austin cindric Daytona 500 win and the Kenneth Logano rivalry in 2015
Newman in the 02, Cindric in the 33,
1997 Chad Little was an owner driver and Roush bought the team partway through the season, but left Chad in a Pontiac for the rest of the year.
Thanks a ton!
Actually that was Greg Pollex that owned the team. Greg is the father of Sherry.
I was under the impression that it was due to contract shenanigans that were in place when he bought the team.
Fun Fact, at the end of 1997 Roush sold those Pontiacs to ISM Marketing, who would score Tabasco as a sponsor, hire Todd Bodine, and give us what became known as the 'Tabasco Fiasco'.
Chad drove for Greg Pollex in 1997.
I think a nice little Iconic moment for RFK is Kurt Busch driving the 97 being the last guy that Dale Sr ever flipped off during the ‘01 Daytona 500
That is a pretty awesome mention!
I think one of the most iconic moments in penske’s history is Brad keselowski winning dodge a championship in there final season
That is pretty incredible, went out with a bang!
I still watch Brad's ESPN drunken interview.
I looked it up on Chad Little if anyone else hasnt mentioned it yet. In 1997 Little's ride the #97 was owned by Mark Rypien Motorsports, otherwise known as PPC Racing. Despite an 8th place finish at Bristol the car struggled with Pontiac. After Watkins Glen later that year, Jack Roush bought the #97 from PPC owner Greg Pollex and Chad Little went to Roush to run full time with it in 1998
Awesome thanks!
@DoglegMediaMatt for Penske. Definitely should note on Jeremy Mayfield at Pocono in 2000 where he outfoxed the Intimidator with a bump and run. And this is actually quite wild but Penske also ran in F1 in the 70s and it dabbled in Australian V8 Supercars from 2014 to 2020 buying 51% of, and I'm not joking when I say it, Dick Johnson Racing
Most iconic Roush moment for me was and will always be Mark Martin winning the 2005 all star race.
Awesome moment!
Ole 93 scheme was out front like it was always meant to be
Rusty is my favorite driver of all time. And I’ll never forget his wild rides at Daytona and Talladega in 1993.
Also him putting Jeff Gordon in the wall at Richmond 1998 was pretty sweet too lol
Rusty was special no doubt about it!
Another wierd part of the Roush 97 was that Chad Little ran a Thunderbird (I think the entire season) even though Ford introduced the Taurus.
That’s a cool fact too!
Roush Racing didn't have enough time and/or $ to build Taurus' for 97 team so they painted John Deere on 1997 #6 Valvoline T-birds.
Carl Edwards 1st race for Roush was at MIS in the DC Comics weekend. He drove the Green Lantern. Because die-cast cars are scheduled months ahead not a week out, it had Jeff Burton's name.
That’s a really cool fact!
1. when rusty wallace spins jeff gordon at the 1998 Richmond race
2. When Carl Edwards flipped Brad Keselowski at 2010 Atlanta Race
Love it! Thanks a ton!
Penske Moments
-Weird numbers of 02 and 06 for Ryan Newman and Sam Hornish Jr.’s debuts.
-Rusty Wallace finishing 2nd in his debut in 1980
-Rusty Wallace doing the flip crazy style at Talladega before Ryan Preece made it cool
-Jeff Gordon vs Rusty Wallace
-Jeremy Mayfield intimidating the Intimidator, then preceding to get himself booted out of the ride early in 2001 for disagreements with Penske (foreshadowing his Evernham departure)
-Rocket Ryan winning ROY and his crazy pole runs in the 2000s
-Brad K vs Kyle Busch vs Marcos Ambrose 2012 at the Glen
-Brad K championship and drunken interview
-Joey Logano vs Denny Hamlin vs Kyle Busch 2013 Auto Club
-Joey Logano vs Matt Kenseth 2015
-Brad Keselowski vs everyone 2014
Love all these! Thanks a ton!
The coolest moment in RFK history has to be when all 5 cars made the Chase. For Penske it's the Daytona 500's with Newman, Logano, and Cindric as well as the championships for Brad K and Logano winning the damn war.
Love it! Thanks for this!
I'm glad you guys explained who Tod Kluever was the last time I asked because I still don't remember a single thing about that guy.
He’s certainly forgettable haha
My memorable moments are Mark Martin won 2002 Coke 600 in Charlotte and he also said this is the hardest race he's ever drove in his life.
All 5 Roush drivers making the 2005 10-man Chase is a ironic moment for Roush Racing, that was 50% of the Chase field.
It was, insane stat
The 97 team was owned by Greg Pollex (PPC Racing). Roush would end up buying the team during the 1997 season.
The team ran Pontiac because of being under contract. Then for 1998, the 97 team races under the Roush Racing Name.
Y’all are awesome!
Great video. As a few others the 97 Pontiac was owned by Greg Pollex, a co owner of the team was Mark Rypien, the former Redskins QB that played under Joe Gibbs.
Awesome! Thanks for the update!
I still wish Ryan Reed was given a full time ride at Roush. He was a solid driver in the Xfinity series and I believe he could have been a bright spot for the team .
I think he deserved a shot too!
RFK number fonts may be the worst and least cohesive of any team ever. It seems that not a single thought was put into brand identity. Hendrick is guilty of this annoyance as well.
I have thought the same thing haha, but I tend to like them 😂
Looks like Brad is trying to fix that with the redesigns to the 17 to better match the 6.
I remember the 90s No. 6 Valvoline Ford Mark Martin drove fondly there were a few times back then it seemed like it was either him or Jeff Gordon were winning every race.
Good times!
The reason why Dave Blaney drove the 99 car in Charlotte 2004 is when Carl Edwards came late from the Trucks race, so Dave Blaney started that car before Carl Edwards hopped on the 99 car that race.
Thanks for the info! This is great!
I love when ricky stenhouse jr drove for the 17 car i miss the good old days
Roush bought the Chad Little 97 team from ppc Racing late in '97; Little would finish out that season in a Pontiac and then convert to a Roush Ford in '98
Penske moment? DW calling, “Toyota drag race, Toyota drag race” and Newman scoops up the W being pushed by Kurt.
But being a Newman fan, any win of his was my favourite.
That black and white Alltel car was slick back in the day. 12 was best but the 02 finished 2nd in Kansas in 2001.
That’s awesome! Newmans 12 was so iconic
Biffle was talent scouted by Benny Parsons. Kenseth was discovered by MM6
Newman drove the 6 in 2021. He did make the playoffs but got eliminated after the round of 16
I don’t know why I can’t get Newman history right haha 😂
Memorable moments for Penske:
Kurt Busch pushing Ryan Newman to victory in the 2008 Daytona 500
Brad Keselowski flipping at Atlanta in 2010 (off the front end of Carl Edwards' car - nice segue)
Brad Keselowski 2012 championship (yeah, it's Dodge's first championship in their last season in the sport, but I remember it more for Brad Keselowski being interviewed while drunk)
Not a good one, but Joey Logano and Brad Keselowski taking each other (and about half the remaining field) on the last lap of the 2021 Daytona 500.
Brad Keselowski tweeting in-car under the red flag about the track cleanup after Montoya hit the jet dryer.
Austin Cindric winning the 2022 Daytona 500.
And while I know it's not NASCAR, but rather IndyCar (and i can't imagine Will Power ever making a start in NASCAR [Scott McLaughlin, on the other hand...]), I would be remiss if I didn't mention Power's meltdown after his car wouldn't start following an unnecessary red flag in Race 1 of the Detroit doubleheader in 2021 (hey, this is the first team in this series that also competes in other series outside of NASCAR iirc, so I just had to).
Love it! Thanks a ton!
3:31 Todd Kluever is pronounced Kleever not Kluver
Lmao welp, I’m not great with pronunciation we all knew this 😂
Penske memorable moments
2022 - Logano winning the championship in "The Year of The Logano" 20/22
2018 - Ryan Blayne wins first Roval Race
2018 - Keslowski gets 500th. Win for Penske (as a organization) at Las Vegas
2016 - Logano wins All star race in penkske special photos car???
2015 - Kenseth vs Logano
2012 - Dodge goes out with a Championship for Penske
2002 Rusty Wallace vs Gordon "Bump and run" at Bristol
Awesome! Thanks for this
@@DoglegMediaMatt Thank you for liking my comment 😁👍
@@Oitzman_Racing49 no problem! It was a great comment!
@@DoglegMediaMatt 😊👍
If I remember correctly, Roush bought the #97 team in the middle of the 1997 season, and decided to let them continue to run Pontiacs till the end of the year. Chad drove the last ten races of the 1997 season for Roush.
Thanks for the clarification!
@@DoglegMediaMatt by the way, great job on your videos, and YES, I AM a subscriber!
@@kenmartin756 love it! Thanks a ton for being here!
That's an interesting pic of the Cheerios 26 car. It's like... a 1999 Taurus, yet it has a Nextel Cup Series decal...
Oh dang, I didn’t even notice that 😂
Memorable moments in Team Penske are Carl Edwards flipped Brad Keselowski in 2010 Atlanta, 2012 Brad Keselowski’s championship win for Dodge and Matt Kenseth wrecked Joey Logano in 2015 Martinsville
Chad Little drove the 97 Pontiac for either himself or PPC Racing in 1996 or 97... but Roush bought the team toward the end of the year and then switched to Ford the following year.
Great vid, but Newman made 2019 playoffs and was barely missed the Round of 12 and he raced in the 6 car in 2021.
Love these videos! I had no idea that 26 car driven by benson was Roushs car. My honorable mention for Penske has to be Brad K winning the championship and his legendary interview with espn after. Dude was toasted. Haha
Love it! Thanks for the kind words!
Ryan Reed also made a start for #16
Never thought about it.
Kenseth wins last Winston cup
Busch wins first Nextel cup
Only 2 championships for roush
For Penske I mention the 2015 fall Martinsville race were kenseth dumped logano
The number 97 was renumbered as the 26 in 2006.
13:25 Chad Little didn't drive for Roush Racing in 1997. He raced for Mark Rypien Motorsports
My data shows he ran for Roush in a Pontiac after the Watkins Glen race in 1997.
Chad Little's John Deere team in 1997 wasn't with Roush Racing. Roush bought the team in late 1997 to field Ford Taurus' in 1998. The true start for CHad Little for RFK, was in 1998, even though it was essentially the same team from 1997. Albeit, different owners.
Ahhhh, my sources lied to me haha
The 97 team was previously owned by PPC racing and was bought out by Roush at the end of the 1996 season. It was decided that it would be easier to continue to run Pontiact for the 1997 season, then to rush 5 or 6 extra ford chassis over the short off season.
Thanks for this!
@@DoglegMediaMatt no problem. I grew up as a Mark Martin fan in the 90s.
For Penske: Brad Keselowski's 2012 championship run
Love it!
Ryan Newman ran in 2021 aswell
Yeah, funny enough I messed this up in the 2nd ever number history video too 😂
18:20 but they had five cars in the race and didnt dominate it like hendrick did at dover. Thus hendrick was the first team to have all their cars finish that way. Imo, hms had the more impressive 1-2-3-4, but thats nothing against roush’s. Its still a feat worthy of praise and respect
Definitely!
Nice video
Thanks!
No problem
I live about a hour from mark’s hometown of batesville
That’s awesome!
lets go im here now
Ayeeee let’s go!
Hell yeah didn't know roush was from Kentucky
Yup!
SVG will make the #97 Great Again!
Ryan Newman ran the #6 for 3 seasons from 2019-2021!
Yeah, I definitely forget about how 2021 season 😂
No worries! Im sure Ryan Newman wishes he could forget about that season too lol@@DoglegMediaMatt
Newman did make the 2019 playoffs, he didn't narrowly miss.
My Newman knowledge is not up to snuff 😅
Comment 2 of asking matt to make a South boston speedway vid
I’m listening 😂
I got some good penske ones ryan newmans 02 mike wallace 12 Justin allgier also 12 scott hornish jr
Love it!
Ryan Blaney winning the Coca-Cola 600
Every time I see Carl edwards mentioned in videos I get sad he could’ve been a top 5 driver ever easy if he didn’t retire early
I agree 100%!
Packers do have two nfl teams, the other one is called the new york jets.
Aaron Rodgers 😂
2022 Daytona 500
Gaunt brother racing next
Love it 😂
I think Chad Little was in a Pontiac in 1997 because he was driving for another team.
It shows he was running for Roush. That’s weird
Roush bought the team towards the end of the season , he started the season as an owner driver after bringing his 23 Busch team to Cup.
He drove for Greg Pollex
Lepage may noy have won with roush but he did create a new verb 😂😂
This is so real 😂
Do stewart haas racing
Honorable Mention wasnt Roush putting all 5 of their cars in 10 car Chase in 2005? Maybe i missed it in the vid?
I whiffed there. I believe I mentioned it during the 1234 finish at homestead in 2005
Was I the only person mentioning Todd kluever?
One other, but I made sure to mention you!
Whooo?????
Thanks I will make sure to give you some other mentions in future videos
@@Tonymeows43😂😂😂
Lemme guess me and the guy were the only mentioning a bust?
Didn’t Newman actually make the playoffs in 2019?
That’s the reason Rousch dumped Stenhouse; because he wasn’t performing, and they wanted Buescher back in their stable
darinton race in 2022 of logano vs byron i was there it was good racing ok
That would have been a great one to see in person!
i said one for it at the poll ok
🏁🏁🏁
🔥
He ran a Pontiac because it wasn’t a Rousch car at the time
Appreciate this!
Ran for Pollex racing then Roush bought the team
I was gonna say ya missed Edwards first win as a moment but I guess it was the clip playing throughout the video sooooo 🤷🏼♂️
Yeah I mentioned it during his segment of the 99 haha
Newman was in the 6 for 2019-2021 not 2019-2020 an made the playoffs in 2019.
Ryan Newman ran 3 seasons for Roush, not 2
Yeah this is the second time I’ve messed that up 😂
To be fair, his 2021 was pretty forgettable. His driver rating was worse than Harrison Burton's is right now.
So who drove the number 6 in 2021?
Me and Ryan Newman knowledge aren’t a great match. I messed this up in the number history video for the 6 too 😅
Not for long tho Brad Keslowski will win in the 6 car this year.
He just did
Hi
Hey Duddle!
First
Then I’m 3rd
Confirmed! 😎🔥
Btw somehow i was the 3rd like but clicked instantly
That was a driver that used to drive a 16-car I don't think he ever won a race he had to wear a special suit because he had diabetes and Ryan Reed I believe the name as I said I don't Google
Yup you’re right!
Thank you for responding and anything I can help you please let me know I don't Google anything it just off the top of my mind I'm stupid that way I've been around race cars for over 52 years and I follow all the old stuff prior to my birth
@@DoglegMediaMatt and if you're going to be doing the Penske video don't leave out Mark Donohue who was probably Rodger penske's favorite driver Penske driver who probably is Way Way Back in the early sixties race Gary Bettenhausen
Imo no other team is more synonymous with a manufacturer than Roush and Ford. The name even carries over to everyday passengers cars. Think about it there’s no Hendrick Camaro, Joe Gibbs Supra, and there never was an Everham or Penske charger. But there are Roush mustangs you can buy from a dealership
