Some nice points, David. An open mic, for all the flaws, and you only touched on a few, is a service. People network, try out material, jam with friends. Good nights can be magical, bad nights make you wish you were digging ditches instead. One thing I would add is, as a participant, understand what the particular open mic is about, and be prepared when your turn comes. You're not just being courteous to the host, but also the other performers. Also, generally an open mic isn't the same as karaoke. You think that was obvious, but some pzeopledon't get it.

My bass player friend and I were going to go to an open mic tonight. He described them as a trap. I agreed so we stayed home and worked in the studio instead. It was very productive.

yeah open mics can be hit or miss, I try to hit up one per week, if I start getting more gigs then maybe I'd just focus on that

You are looking at everything completely opposite of me. I enjoy watching other people get up there and perform. It is their personal growth. I like to see their song selection. I enjoy talking to people. I am not worried about money at all. I like people, and it is just nice to talk to people. I guess my priorities are just completely different than your’s

I am currently working with the Steely Dan model much better to stay in the studio and work on your craft. And build a repertoire online that is professionally videotaped with good audio.
