    I work at a venue that does open mics, and just following these steps would easily bring you up over the bottom 40% of performers at these events.

    Lolol the sound guy's your best friend. Asking if it's okay to plug in is a great tip for any venue you play

    Great advice ! one more tip if anything you use requires batteries always have extra be it lithion, rechargeable or standard 😊 And i like the emphasis on being supportive - we always learn from others & sharing the joy of music is special.

    Open mics are a great way to get gigs too! Met a fellow performer who was a regular at the weekly. Got invited to open for them when they got their first show. There’s also no better way to hone the craft than knowing you have a “recital” coming up every week. I made my habit to always do 1 cover song and 1 fresh original. Sometimes I’d be rushing the composition of the new song in the hour gap between work and the open mic. You get pretty good at writing new songs when you prime your subconscious with this balance of pleasure and pressure.

      Wow! Sounds like you work well under pressure. Such a great skill to have! That’s so cool how you challenge yourself. Such an infectious energy!

    Brilliant! Great advice Emily. Like you I've hosted a bunch of open mics, seen everything you've seen I'm sure. For tips I'd also add: 1)Keep song intros short. 2) Sing no more than 2 inches from the mic (or bring your own if you got one). 3) SPEND $$$ WITH THE VENUE. Support them by buying a drink or a snack.
    And to expand on #4: STAY and watch other performers as long as you can... Don't just play your set and leave. Don't be selfish... support your fellow musicians. 👍 Love ya Emily, keep up the good work

      Oh yes! I approve of all of these additions! Thanks for adding! Cheers to you fellow host!
      Are you hosting anywhere right now?

    • @neilz9
      @neilz9 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not at the moment. But I can certainly see the value in musicians hosting their own (your #5 tip) It's a great way to help musicians just starting out, make musical connections and trade gig opportunities 😎

    I use to do an open mic at a pub that is longer in business. It really was more of a jam night than an open mic and was so cool. I do think we should get pay to do open mics.

    Solid advice of course -- especially the technical one.
    P.S. - phone clamp is sold out, so I guess everyone who saw this vid rushed over and bought one!

      Go for it! It helps if you find a spot that already has a sound system. Or even a simple one can be good 👍

    I have a stomp box looper/drum machine I like for accompaniment but no one else there uses one so I feel like I'm cheating. Also time is limited so I have my backing loops preloaded. Am I a faker? I feel like these tools help me give the best performance which seems most important.

    • @EmilyMcVicker
      @EmilyMcVicker  3 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Absolutely! I think it’s really cool when people bring different toys to showcase at open mic. And to your point, as long as they don’t take up too much time. To be courteous to the other performers of course.
      Not a faker in my book! 🫶🙌🫶
