Man this brings back so many memories... Oh, the time that we had to fake most everything in 3D rendering.Never actually used Soft Image, that was the dream software, I was using 3D studio and Lightwave back then, gotta say, they weren't too far behind
This speaks to the idea of the risk of closed hardware systems and pricing. they were overpriced and a closed system. If a competitor with an open system and the performance is superior then that basically tanks your market. Pc was cheaper and the software was cheaper and just as good.. so unless they dropped their prices to match then they could compete .. they did for another decade and slowly went out of business...
Advanced NURBS modelling was a form of black magic... and not many mastered it back in the day. *g* Also, stitching spline patches manually is one of the many things I don't miss, lol.
Wow just found this video. I went and bought this tutorial because I wanted to learn more tricks about this software so much. Softimage was my first pro 3D software. Then again I was learning Alias Wavefront too and before that 3D studio on DOS.
I use blender. I was far too young (and poor for that matter) to know anything about SGI. I'm so fascinated by them now a days, that I spend hours watching these old video's.
Yep I used to be a demo artist for an east cost reseller :) Ohhh the good old days. I really need to go back to Montreal and eat more of that awesome French Canadian food. Man St Lauran Street was awesome. I think I'm spelling that correctly. I also remember when Avid F'ed up the DS. That was a GREAT system. IMO
It's weird how much things have changed yet... haven't... Old IRIX version of Softimage from years before I ever got into 3D anything, something I only heard about in passing from my college instructors.. I originally learned on Maya and adapted to use Blender in recent years... Yet so many thing in this are weirdly familiar and make sense..
Later versions? Softimage 3d last version was nr. 4, released in 2001 I think. After that they came up with Softimage XSI. Trimming for example was one of the features not available in early XSI releases. Keep in mind that this software was first released in 1988.
@@NathanDarkson984 no, it's completely seperate. XSI was 3D's replacement, and while initially ported to IRIX, as SGI died off, XSI was mainly only made for Windows

and you mean they are not available in the later versions of this software too .that would mean they removed features .that would be sad please tell me some of those features.
Ahh ... What fond memories. .. But no ... Seriously .. Compared to its contemporaries? .. 3DS Max, Maya, even Lightwave and Alias|Wavefront the software ... Softimage was a bit of a PITA to use. .. That database system ... ouch ... lol
I never understood why it couldn't save everything into the database file itself instead of having to create a million different directories and then having the database file point to where those directories are. Another bonus is the "Default DB" and "Delete DB" buttons being right next to each other, which is just absolutely genius

@@Capeau Lightwave had polys and subdivisions. Its strength was its render engine.
Even back then it has it all. I can't believe it couldn't survive.
It was killed because it was hurting inferior maya
It did, at NASA.

im stoned af and not sure how i got here but, HELL YEAH BRO, shapes n shit :)
This is my favorite comment.
And, at all times you get buttery smooth wireframe and lit solid views while editing your model... SGI workstations were badass! :)
My favourite part is the "poor man's softshadow" :D
Thanks for uploading.
Good memories working on a SGI indigo 2 Workstation...

You and me both buddy 👍
most of the stuff in this was the foundation of what we have today in blender and maya

Thanx for uploading. A true Legend of CG History.
This was most likely recorded in 1997 as that is the year V3.7 came out.
I still have my original VHS copy of this! Man, I'm old :-/
If your vhs is still in good shape, could you please digitalize and share it?

Ermal Koci Isn't Softimage XSI a PORT of Softimage 3D for new Windows OS?

What a bizarre workflow, I'm amazed people actually managed to make models this way
I had use softimage 2.0 when i was young... its mainstream powerful 3d program in Broadcast ..good memories.
So simple yet my best works were done in Soft 3D.
haha... sill have the vhs on my shelf next to the 3.5 box... the good old days ...
Would you consider archiving and uploading your copy of 3.5?

And yet there are some features that even apps today can't do
Hi. I'm from 2020 and I'd like to say that the "MetaClay" functionality in SoftImage is still something I'd love to see more in 3D software of today.

Nice, used this back at university. Version 3.0 or even something older.
Do you have a copy of that?
this video wizardly still relatable !
I’m sitting on Lightwave VHS tapes
Didn't this software see use in the Star Wars Special Edition?
lol. This software saw use in all the major CGI films from the early days. Jurassic Park? Men in Black? Casper? Jumanji.

Fascinating!!!!
i agree with you, even today results very dificcult create animate and integrate cgi.
That's what they say but it's really hard to believe because of the primitive tools and hardware resources and knowledge
Very cool stuff.

NURBS is a funny word
Hola
It's soft-Image, say it right.
Actually he is pronouncing it correct. The image in Softimage rhymes with mirage, just like he's saying in the video.
I'm aware of that I was joking.
***** Ah ok, sorry about that. I just noticed a lot of people don't know how it's actually pronounced.
Chrono1081 Yeah, you know the joke from the Simpsons "It's Chowder, say it right".
@@Chrono1081 soft-image sounds much better and normal
Wow, what a painful way to model a head.
Soft Image
Not soft "ih mojj."
Nope. that's a common mistake.. It is Soft imaahj.
