It does great if you need to chop phone book. But the wood...disappointing really. My esse junglas chops faster and its a knife. Not worth the weight. Looks cool though
Thanks for making such a great tomahawk/small axe. I ordered one for chopping firewood at home and camping, and had to buy another one to put in my bug out bag. Good job.
I really wish you guys made a "tactical" handled version of the woods chogan with a non wood handle. I like the head on the woods version and the handle of the tactical version. The utility of the woods version makes more sense than the smaller tactical version and even though the wood looks nice I'm not into the historic look, I'd rather have the extra grip and comfort of the tactical handle.
Finally a practical tomahawk. Better buy one quickly before they lose the wooden handle, replace it with a plastic one, add a few spikes, paint the whole thing black and wrap it with paracord.
***** Yeah, I always hate being right. Also, I noticed that 49/57 tomahawks in the store I buy most of my blades from are tacticrap. It's a reasonable expectation that the remaining 8 will eventually meet the same fate.
SAsgarters The Chogan is based on the RMJ Loggerhead. Which has a hammer end instead of a spike as well. There's also Hardcore Hardware, and a few others I can't recall at the moment.
I can just imagine some person walking by and seeing Skall just hittin a log on the ground with a camera. Like, "uuuuh i think ill just keep walking...."
congrats has to be given for this video...canada right now has pretty warm days to go in a forest to hit stuff and stuff with gloves and everything....im surprised that you didnt burn off
Sorry if I'm repeating common knowledge here but there is a very simple way to keep any friction held axe head securely in place with no wiggle. Just place a wood shaving( or popsicle stick if it's bad) between the head and shaft as you ram it down, the shaving will smoosh into place and take up all the excess space and keep it very secure, cut off of any piece of the shaving sticking out with a knife. If it's still loose do it again using thicker shavings until it's as secure as you want it. This sounds way more complicated than it is to do. It's what I did to my spike hawk and Viking hand axe(30 inch one) and I've beaten the holy hell out of them and they've never loosened up on me, even stabbing with the viking axe and it doesn't require any visible or hard to undo mods., I don't even use the set screw. This is just a suggestion, please don't use this method if it doesn't feel safe enough for you.
What is your opinion on hatchets vs. khukris? Since owning both I've found that the khukri can be pretty handy for felling sapilings aswell as just shaving wood. Although on the other hand, it does seem like the tom has the advantage of being easier to use with both hands. That's just my two cents on it but I'd be interested to hear yours too.
How does the head work and feel without the handle? That's one of the main reasons to get a traditional style 'Hawk over one of the newer "tactical" designs, the head can ideally be taken off and used for more delicate work.
also, the phrase "I'm pretty confident..." now holds connotations coming from Skallagrim. Bad ones. Next he'll be shooting the damned thing. Never forget.
Skall, you could try wrapping the handles of your axes and tomahawks with tennis grip. My brother does and it works. Its also cheap, so yeah. Just a thought
Wow nice Hawk, one day i'll buy a hawk, i'm strongly considering this one. Also, some nice royality free Morningrise/Watershed clone music on the background.
The phone book was actually a good choice to demonstrate on.. can never understand tabletop reviews that often leave one still having more questions than answers.
I often find myself face to face with a savage phonebook in the bush. Usually it is me or the phonebook walking out alive but not both of us. This would be a great tool to have.
I was just wondering how well this tomahawk works for throwing? At the moment I have trained with and use a simple, hand-forged 3J tomahawk for throwing.
I was checking this axe out and I am liking what I am seeing. I have always been skeptical of production line axes but I know there are a few good ones out there. This one may very well be one of the good ones. :D
I'll admit as a longsword user I don't have any experience with axes and hatchets, my skill is in longswords after all... But that hacking with the phone books and ESPECIALLY when you where holding up the tree branch looked INCREDIBLY dangerous. Is that just how axes handle?
Would an axe-type weapon that is a functional pick-axe at the back and a regular axe in the front (with each side of the metal parts being the same weight) work? I was thinking of possible Dwarven mine-shaft weapons. Something that is both a digging tool and a defense against underground monsters.
hey skall. just wondering since you always do your testing outside in the forrest. has anyone ever complayned at you or complimented you for useing already cut wood. or no one dares talk to a badass beareded man with a axe/knife/sword/etc etc :3
For a working tomahawk, I much prefer a hammer over a spike. Spikes are great if you are smashing skulls, but a hammer works much better if you are building a shelter or cracking nuts.
I love tomahawks and I've been looking at that model for a while, but you made it look sexy to me. I know how you're not a huge fan of cold steal in general, but I have the cold steel pipe hawk/trail hawk(They are actually quite decent except for a few cons), and it looks like it would be interesting to make a comparison between the CS ones and the CRKT ones. BTW, it would be a good tiny mod to carve off the curled up part of the head end of the shaft(near where the head fits), so when the head is trying to stay up, it doesn't meet a wall of peeled wood(I could actually see that in the video) or a steep slope, but a low slope that could keep slide up so it has more secure friction.
fair enough, nps, and im sure allot of people want to see some assassins creed weapons be scrutinised... tho thankfuly the creators are getting better and more smarter nowadays..
that looks very nice. it looks pretty tough, i've heard good things from CRKT but never actually tried it. i been looking for a tomohawk or small multipurpose axe for a long time to replace my belt knife in the woods. ever since i seen it on a previous video about axes i been looking into it. i might have to give it a try.
Considering how easily he seperated the head in the video, I think that is some play. He should kindda carve off some of the peel on the top of the head to have a more secure fit.
I live at the 50 parallele level and I ride my bike deep in the wood! Many lynx, wolves, bears, and other funny beast here (Usually they run away from you..)I can separate the metal part and the handle! I store them in my mule camelback and have an efficiant axe/hammer tool. And (because we never know) I have a weapon to protect myself! This thing look nice and are easily storable (and add weigh for my training)!
The issue with the head has become worse nowadays (Dec. 2021). Best to borrow a page from another content creator's book. Not my idea. Wrap the handle directly below the head after seating it as tight as possible. Start out with a couple of layers of hockey tape down to 6 or 8 inches. Then apply Wilson wrap over the hockey tape. Finish up with a layer of more hockey tape on the very top of the wrap. As well as the very bottom of it. This should greatly reduce the chances of the head becoming a bit loose.
Completely random but you know the axe in Prometheus? That is a film/game weapon that deserves reviewing because the shape of the handle is really different and I can't be bothered to Google it :/
Skall put the axe in water, but just the head. The wood will abbsorb the water and swell and it will fix itself in place. Might ruin the axe long term, but i don't think it will rust in 1-2 days in water.
It's a nice hawk, although I prefer the more historical versions from H&B Forge and 2-Hawks. Cold Steel hawks also work really well, and, although they're butt ugly in factory form, with a little work they can be very nice hawks. (I suspect the same is true of the CRKT as well.)

GreaseStain aslong as your throwing it properly, and not hitting it like directly on the top with the target.. my sister did that once... she hasnt heard the end of it lol..
This is how it was done for hundreds of years and is still used today for the good reason that it works, has always worked and will always work. (until material is lost at the head of the shaft at which point the shaft should be replaced).
Axes and pickaxes have worked like that for a long time and the design has stayed relevant because it works perfectly well in addition to being economical and practical. If the shaft breaks, you just toss it and slide on a new one. No need to get a new axe or spend a bunch of time reattaching the head to a new haft.
Khane Betrayer Even if you split the end with wedge its still friction holding it in place.. and it would make it harder to replace the haft,, I guess you could put a nail through the head and shaft... but I somehow think that would be a poor solution.
I have two tomahawks held by pure friction, but they are too tight I can't even take them off if I wanted to anymore :/. Actually tried to drive out the thing as hard as possible put it just wont.
We're a little tired right now from watching this video on repeat for the last three days straight. It's a good one. Thanks for sharing Skall!
I test mine on the wood Very soon ;)
Haha, busy at work, I see. :D

The local park rangers must think there is a beaver infestation.

Haha I winced when you were hitting the branch seeing how much the axe bounced back.
the beard
the axe
skal embraces his inner viking
Ordered mine on saturday, really pleased i got it now does come reasonably sharp
Skallagrim the phonebook slayer
Well its pretty much the only utility they have now :D RIP phonebookd
I don't think skallagrim had a choice. In the woods it's ether the phonebook or you!...Lol!
Ah dead trees, the gear reviewers mortal enemy
congrats has to be given for this video...canada right now has pretty warm days to go in a forest to hit stuff and stuff with gloves and everything....im surprised that you didnt burn off
This was recorded before the heat wave.
***** you are lucky then..because i right now it would be a challenge to go chopping and stuff
koel700 straight up ive been working in like 35c out near vancouver the last 2 days have been heaven compared to earlier this week
Nice, I was contemplating getting one for work.
All these tests are gonna make Skall fit as a fiddle in no time :D
Now I want one of these too... this channel could get expensive for me. Great vids keep it up
This might be the first axe I get, can't wait for the review!
i really like how he will test the tools against all sorts of things fixed and movable so you can really get an idea of what the tool can do.

I'm sure you tested it, but will you be covering on how well it throws?
I have this thawk and it performs even better two handed
been waiting for this one! awesome video
Wow... what sort of monster just hits a defenceless phone book with an axe like that?
I made a patriot tomahawk and used electrolysis to etch into the metal. I also did this same process to a Woods Chogan T-hawk. Great blade.
I knew youd luv it
Damn that is scenery is amazing!
Skall maybe the next weapon u shd get with the Patreon is a mace
5:08 Whoa, those are pretty good and deeep chops! Nice video c:

GG skall, very very good commentary

What do you do with all the wood you chop Skall?
Good demo on the quality. CRKT item are usually very good
also, the phrase "I'm pretty confident..." now holds connotations coming from Skallagrim. Bad ones. Next he'll be shooting the damned thing. Never forget.
Have you ever tested any kind of weapon on one of those ballistic gel dummies?
Skall do you use the results as firewood ever?
Maybe not, but it's dead wood, in a worst case scenario he just left them there, it's biodegradable so it will decompose and feed the other trees.
Skall, you could try wrapping the handles of your axes and tomahawks with tennis grip. My brother does and it works. Its also cheap, so yeah. Just a thought
Let me suggest a song for another testing video:
Darude - Sandstorm
And please don't disable the comments there. :D
Wow nice Hawk, one day i'll buy a hawk, i'm strongly considering this one.

Hi, I was wandering if you ever got your hands on a Ulfberht and if so how do you compare it to other swords ?
I would love to see this tested beside a Cold Steel Rifleman's Hawk
I often find myself face to face with a savage phonebook in the bush. Usually it is me or the phonebook walking out alive but not both of us. This would be a great tool to have.

Such an absolute beast. Makes me want to start collecting axes:D...
Question, What's the difference between a hatchet, axe and tomahawk?
Skall can you do a tutorial on how to sharpen medieval swords and axes? That would be fantastic.
I was checking this axe out and I am liking what I am seeing. I have always been skeptical of production line axes but I know there are a few good ones out there. This one may very well be one of the good ones. :D
Great Review, Great Channel
Mine came in the mail yesterday, it kicks ass. I can't get the head loose though, mine is on so secure it came with wood curls peeling out the eye lol
Its nice also because its not just a weapon but a useful tool
Was it sharp out of box?
How has the handle held up ?
what kind of steel is that?
it looks extremely sturdy and reliable.
1055 carbon steel.
no stainless steal this time :)
yeah that thing is freaking awesome.
I'll admit as a longsword user I don't have any experience with axes and hatchets, my skill is in longswords after all...
But that hacking with the phone books and ESPECIALLY when you where holding up the tree branch looked INCREDIBLY dangerous.

I always go where no people are, and if I notice someone wandering off in my direction I stop until they're gone, to not freak them out. :)

HEY YO SKALL how do you feel about the hidden blades from assassins creed?
EVILBARBARIANIMPALER Not everyone knows about what's in every video.
AnotherPostcard ik, i was more asking.. its just kinda suspicious..
EVILBARBARIANIMPALER thank you man, i hadn't seen that video. nawh i wasn't trollin i was just hoping to see it in the fantasy scrutiny videos.
fair enough, nps, and im sure allot of people want to see some assassins creed weapons be scrutinised... tho thankfuly the creators are getting better and more smarter nowadays..
I realize that this may be rude but would you consider doing a video on heavy ended curved swords such as the Romanian Kalij (or Dracula's Beheader)
that looks very nice. it looks pretty tough, i've heard good things from CRKT but never actually tried it. i been looking for a tomohawk or small multipurpose axe for a long time to replace my belt knife in the woods. ever since i seen it on a previous video about axes i been looking into it. i might have to give it a try.
Is it me or is there a little play in the handle when he's wiggling the axe out of the wood at about 5:20?

Can you review the United Cutlery M48 Hawk Axe?
a phonebook? is this the analog ipad?
I just realized where T.Hawk in Street Fighter's name comes from

news from 2017 skallagrim no longer has any dead trees left
Apologies, auto Correct I meant skallagrim
Completely random but you know the axe in Prometheus? That is a film/game weapon that deserves reviewing because the shape of the handle is really different and I can't be bothered to Google it :/
I like the music. It reminds me of the vikings
skall, I'm beginning to think that it would be a great idea for you to invest in a wood oven.
That's a lot cheaper than I was expecting... might be a good buy.
Skall put the axe in water, but just the head. The wood will abbsorb the water and swell and it will fix itself in place. Might ruin the axe long term, but i don't think it will rust in 1-2 days in water.
And when it dries it will be worse than before. Try boiled linseed oil.
Was it pre-sharpened?
Yes, it came sharp from the factory.
Cool. And you are reporting no visible damage to the blade after this?
felixar90
Yes.
That would break some ribs!
So when I go camping, I'm taking this and the Schrade kukri machete.
What sharpener do you use?
Spyderco Sharpmaker, hes done a video on it.
how will it do against zombie heads?
Throwing test please?
I have similarly looking tomahawk from cold steel. Its made of the finest weapon-grade pot steel.
*****
Yes. Its the cold steel "Trail Hawk" tomahawk and its shit indeed.
your videos are so awesome :)
love your vids man :) keep that shit up yee
Do you live in the US or ??:)
Canada.
Alright cool:)
3:50 Dammit man,safety first
It's a nice hawk, although I prefer the more historical versions from H&B Forge and 2-Hawks. Cold Steel hawks also work really well, and, although they're butt ugly in factory form, with a little work they can be very nice hawks. (I suspect the same is true of the CRKT as well.)
where can i find this music track,,all the link does is send me to a login page
Do the kangee next
Do a pickaxe next?
great vid.
4:45 That's not a bar, it's a pipe. A bar that size would be much heavier and WAY harder to bend. Also, it bends like a pipe.
4:27 What was that noise? lol Sounded like someone died in skyrim
its so post tomahawk , its a full grown Axe! :D
I really want one of these. I only have one reservation, the same I have for any axe that might be used while camping, they can be dangerous to the user. Inexperienced people can quite easily hurt themselves while using an axe. The type of wounds an axe can make is not something you want while miles away from medical aid. A folding saw is probably best for untrained folks.
I would take a saw over an axe since its more energy efficient and it's nice to have a straight, clean cut making it easier to split the logs for firewood.
Mark K splitting logs with a folding saw? sounds... inefficient...
Alex Schmidtka LOL i use my survival knife for splitting after i cut the tree into sections using the saw.
ah alright i got you :)
You should try carpentry, it'll be fun!
Awesome!
name of song?
You didn't give it a throw?
I don't know how sturdy it feels exactly, but I'm imagining that since the head isn't fastened to the handle with anything other than friction that throwing it would be a tad clumsy. But I must emphasize that this is all how I *imagine* it to be. I could easily be wrong.
Didn't find any dead trees, and the ones I normally throw at are not accessible right now, with everything being overgrown.
Peter Wilson
proper Hawks have always been friction fit. Once tight it would have no effect on throwing. The idea was to easily replace the handle, as throwing things tends to damage them.
plus in the physics department, the head is always pulling away from the lighter handle, thus keeping the handle tight into the head.
GreaseStain aslong as your throwing it properly, and not hitting it like directly on the top with the target.. my sister did that once... she hasnt heard the end of it lol..
***** You'll have to give an update when you get a chance to test. Looks a bit hefty for a one handed throw but wood handles can be deceiving.
I don't like how friction is all that's keeping the head on. Sorta ruins it for me, even if it won't come loose.
WakarimasenKa Not sure why you mentioned me in your comment?
