As a kid, i LOVED Johnny Carson - The Great Carnac! I remember watching this interview and being mesmerized by the way the waves look like they're coming into the window behind them & just had to find this interview to see if i remembered that correctly.
The thing I liked about Carson was how he didn't push his own politics, unlike todays late night hosts. Carson joked about politicians of all stripes. I miss that.

Johnny's response to the question at 6:07 is why current late night talk shows just don't put up the numbers that they used to. No one wants to watch an egomaniac every night. Sure, Johnny had his faults, but he kept it behind the curtain.
TV is a dying medium. Many people get their entertainment from streaming and internet. I won't necessarily disagree with your "egomaniac" comment, but the market share has changed that maybe the personalities on TV are an effect rather than a cause. The world is changing and in-home internet was taking off just a few years after Johnny retired in 1992. I think my folks had dial-up starting in 1995. The way we consumed news and entertainment has drastically changed with the rise of consumer internet.

My first thought in seeing this another time after many years, pertained to erosion and rising sea level. I wonder if the property has ever been impacted by storms or been water damaged. The interview was unique, particularly in seeing Carson at home. I did not find the exchange very penetrating, though there were opportunities had Walters recognized them or chosen to follow up. Historically, there's meaning, but mostly shallow fluff...

That's being demonstrated today on every late night talk show. They're not funny, they're just whinny, petulant, over paid individuals who parade around as comedians.

Being physically fit and physically healthy are two totally different things. You can be really fit, and not very healthy, and you can be very healthy and not very fit. Carson was very fit but not at all healthy.

I loved Johnny,but I know for a fact he had a granddaughter that was black & he refused to even acknowledge her! A dna study was done & she was rightfully his blood! After he talked about it I lost all respect for the man!
I loved the show but have grown to dislike the man as time went on and more was learned about who he really was. Its true that power corrupts and it certainly took its toll on his mind and personality, but yet he was too weak with women and in relationships in general. Its so ridiculous what some of these men allow to happen to themselves with women😢
He always kept his show classy. He left political subjects out. People watched him to laugh and be entertained. He didn't get political. He stayed away from politics. There will never be another classy comedian host like Johnny Carson ever again. All the comedians now-a-days use politics for their personal gain and for their paycheck 🙄. It's disgusting. Carson did not stay away from politics. I watched The Tonight Show all through the 1970s and 1980s. He dealt with it in a way that would make people laugh. For example, he spoke in this video of the faux pas of James Watt (who had been Reagan's Secretary of the Interior) in a light-hearted, funny way.
She is great usually but this is the worst interview I've ever seen her do and that sucks because I love Johnny Carson and generally I love her Work...
You can clearly see here how insecure Johnny remained his entire life...he simply can not bring himself to the point of vulnerability....which means he would be nearly impossible to have a relationship with because he would always be feeling threatened by the tiniest self-revelation.....you think the reasons he couldn't stay married were the fault of his wives? Beautiful women, which his wives certainly were, do not seek divorce from a man as attractive in so many ways as was Johnny Carson.....
