Imagine being 12 years old in 1978 and hearing this on your "stoner" neighbor's stereo for the first time. Mind blown....rock and roll changed forever.

No s***, it changed forever. Oh my God, I remember hearing this and I was very fortunate when I was stationed in Gulfport, Mississippi to actually go to a performance live in 1988 and a few thought. Eruptions was impressive in videos. It was even more impressive in person. My mind was blown twice first time. I ever heard it as a kid. And then it even was more blown when I heard it live.
My brother was 16 in 1978, and a guitar player. He described hearing "Eruption" for the first time as "Some guy in school played this track by a new band, and you just wanted to sprint to the boys' room and jerk off!"
Fairly accurate depiction of every single person's reaction the first time they heard Eruption. Love it. RIP Eddie

@@derigity8928 Hendrix was pretty damn proficient as well, not that EVH wasn’t but Hendrix progressed the guitar beyond limits people didn’t even know existed. He invited new sounds no one had ever heard or has heard since. He also paved the way for musical theory in terms of creating new chords and new ways to mix melodies together.
I remember the first time I heard this. I was 7 or 8 years old and my jaw hit the floor at the 1:30 mark. I picked up a guitar for this reason and have been playing for 20 years now. R.I.P Eddie. One in a million 🎸👑

That's one guy on a guitar with just a bit of drums. No multiple tracks or any of that. To see him do that on stage is just mind blowing because you just know that one guy on a guitar cannot possibly make all those sounds...and yet he does...

I was refreshed to finally see a reaction to the original...it stood alone for DECADES as the benchmark of all-time great guitar solos! To some it is still considered the greatest guitar solo of all time. So, the live version to those who feel that way is great but better at the moments when the notes from the original are hit. I love the live version...its iconic. But the original is the GOAT! I want to see someone do a back-to-back reaction...the original and then the live longer version.

I obtained a 6-pack of Budweiser, &
I drank it all, while listening to that entire LP.
And,
That was before allllllllll of the subsequent iterations of the band.
The pureness of that first listen back in spring of 1980.
Words alone cannot describe ….
The best part is, this is off their FIRST album! "Hello, my name is Eddie Van Halen and I like to play guitar".
And he didn’t disappoint to the day he died. Imagine being the A&R guy who signed them. He heard this and was like where the hell have you guys been?

@@hairyknuckle1607 The demo was the help he gave Van Halen, they even thank him in the liner notes of their first album. But to your point, there's no question, they would have made it without him.
The greatest part is, that was also just an introduction to the song "You Really Got Me", check that one out!!
Yeah I always expect to hear it too after Eruption. The opening riff compliments perfectly.
I was a 13 year old fledgling guitarist when Eruption came out. I think my reaction was just like this guy. None of us had EVER heard anything like this. It was like an alien came from outer space played the guitar.

This is actual music, played on actual instruments, played by actual virtuoso musicians is a high quality recording studio, on high quality recording equipment, with a skilled producer. This is high information music, and not the low information, overproduced pretentiousness we have today.
