Jiian This guy doesn't seem like he knows a whole lot. I nearly rage-quit when he said, "right just because you couldn't do it, means it is a myth?", in reference to the mythbuster's testing which, truthfully, gave the myth it's best shot. If it can't be reproduced in any way given the same materials that could have been used, well, it probably means it is false. Legends and myths do exist, and, well, just because we haven't managed to do it, doesn't mean it is just us not being able to do things that ancient civilizations did. I'm surprised he didn't bring up the Helepolis, which was a giant, armor-plated, siege tower with dozens of ballistae in armaments. The thing would be so heavy and slow, you would need an army to pull it, let alone man it.
Yawyna124 Archimede's supposed death ray I cover in another thread here. It's feasible, but it would have to be a massive, articulated monstrosity to work with any degree of utility. I could see something around 400 square meters worth of flat mirrors *maybe* making this work, depending on the quality of the mirrors. But that's 400 square meters of mirrors, set on a on a somewhat articulated structure (for making minor distance alterations) on an assembly that can be pointed in multiple directions.
Jiian Thus making it as much of a myth as the Helepolis. It's just too damn big and unwieldy to actually be in use at those times. And those 400 square meters of mirrors would certainly not be instantly catching ships on fire; 20x20 meters is a lot, but it's not that much, especially considering it's only most effective at one range without having to readjust the focus (something of a feat when you have to do it with 400 square meters of mirror), and you know, they can shoot back at you and your fragile 'weapon'. Chances are, the range of a mirror array for it to instantly set something on fire is pretty slim, considering that, no matter what, it would dissipate very quickly, no matter how finely focused it is.
jamesdagmond Their methodology is solid. If you don't agree with their findings, then follow the scientific method and perform your own experiments to disprove what they found.
This only proves that ancient people were not stupid. Hell, they knew the earth is round and made pretty accurate calculations of its circumference from observing shadows cast by poles. They also built the pyramids.
Not many of them knew the earth was round, and those that did got called idiots. The pyramids aren't really intelligent, they are just large creations made by thousands of slaves.
crazyguywithasword I think there is a lot that you both do not know or understand about the construction of the pyramids, and the many aspects to which seem unbelievable that they would know about it, but there are too many to be just a coincidence. I would suggest reading up about before making such baseless comments.
crazyguywithasword Even today with modern technology it is near to impossible to build a replica of one of the biggest pyramids, because the blocks are huge and stupidly heavy. Besides that, the blocks were brought from hundreds of miles away. And it was really rare among educated people to think that the earth was flat, after it was proved to be round numerous times during the ancient Greek times.
crazyguywithasword The accuracy of the pyramids was about 1/100th of an inch for it's corners, something our modern technology can't reproduce. Also the shape, position and materials use show a lot about their understanding about stuff we don't understand. The SI unit for length used by the Ancient Egyptians was cm x golden ratio, and cm is a length relative to the length of the world which is something they knew somehow, including the golden ratio. Along with the specific geometric center of the world they built the pyramids at and the exact angle which point in the same way as the compass, shows it's eight faces by having one on each side shaded and one lit during the equinox (the pyramids actually have 8 faces showing, something to look up). This shows they know about the specific position of the earth relative to our solar system, the exact angle at which the earth spins at, and the relative size of the earth and sun. Also it's fact that slaves didn't build the pyramids but well educated Egyptians. There's so much more as well about it which is just so intelligent. It's truly amazing and you should look it up because it never fails to awe me.
Roman concrete is presently believed to have been made of volcanic basalt powder (specifically from Vesuvius) and salt water with the addition of local sand. The 'crete used in the remains of Roman highways has been found to use the same specific volcanic product from Vesuvius also- this is the current theory and one or two university construction engineering depts are supposed to be following up on this. LSU Baton Rouge? Florida State ?
6. Alchemy (in general)? I thought he was going to talk more about ancient medicine, but he did not. There are many cures (and some forms of surgery) which have been lost over time, and we have yet to reacquire them.
Rashid alshamsi search for damascus knife on youtube we have been using it for years! btw knife collector sitting with a damascus knife in my hand right now...
Oskar Duroj Bidstrup "The original method of producing Damascus steel is not known. Because of differences in raw materials and manufacturing techniques, *modern attempts to duplicate the metal have not been entirely successful.* Despite this, several individuals in modern times have *claimed that they have rediscovered the methods by which the original Damascus steel was produced.* [2][3]"
Greek Fire was a mixture of asphalt, sulfur, and potassium nitrate (saltpeter). It is a very effective incendiary. No universal antidote is remotely possible. Different poisons have different modes of actions, and no one material can counter them all.
It's a lot less "mysterious" and "advanced" when you actually look into each one and realize... 1. We have quite a few ideas about what greek fire could've been made of, we just don't know which of these was used because of lack of historical information. It doesn't mean "we can't make greek fire" because it's "so advanced", we have much better incendiary weapons. 2. Antidote to "all poisons". That flies against the face of biochemistry. It's either a myth (there really isn't much support in its favor), or it was simply a medicine that helped against the most common poisons used at that time (hence "universal"). 3. The "Death Ray" is just a bunch of focusing mirrors, nothing mysterious about it. It's questionable how effective it would've actually been (again, mythological accounts can screw shit up for historians), but it's sometimes possible for a focused sunbeam to ignite the sails of a boat. 4. Roman concrete is not in any way superior to what we use today, I have no idea where he pulled that from. 5. Damascus steel = magic? No. It's true that the exact technique has been lost and we can't recreate that exact recipe, but it doesn't mean it's capable of "cutting through a rifle barrel". In fact, it isn't. It still makes for pretty fine weapons, though. ...Wait, where is 6? "Is life really that much better off?" YES, how is that even a question? Unless you like your life expectancy to be 30-40 years, constant struggle against diseases that we've since trivialized with medical knowledge, and you actually have the chance of doing something relevant and/or enjoyable in the world, while in the past, 99% of the population just worked one field their entire life... IF you were lucky enough to not be born a slave, or the "wrong" race.
+zolikoff my first thoughts, as well. However Roman concrete being better than our current stuff isn't a mystery. Modern concrete is just cheaper and more universal.
Greek fire is pure potassium (not the kind in bananas). The antipoison is not a possible thing. The Archimedes Death Ray was a theory that he was working on finding a suitably reflective and heatproof surface to work. The romans used their volcanic ash to make their concrete. Damascus is simply high carbon steel and low carbon steel folded in on each other and flattened hundreds of times. High carbon steel is steel that doesn't bend, it shatters, but it can hold a keen edge provided it doesn't explode. Low carbon steel is more akin to iron being that it doesn't keep its edge for as long and it bends and stays together more.
Damon Furlough Haha awesome, I did the same thing about 15sec of research on the Greek fire and stopped watching by the time he got to the steel. This guy needs to do a lot more research.
The only thing I had to look up was the Greek Fire. The other stuff I knew too. I was just commenting on yours because I made virtually the same original comment before I saw yours.
your most welcome! gotta love ancient history! i like to think that some swords had supernatural properties or something we would probably refer to as magical. ahhhh forgotten technology!
junoguten There is no money in cures. The current medical society of big PHARMA creates disease to sell remedies. If you are humane the thought would be to cure disease and illness but in this society of business there is no profit in curing the ill.
Walter Smith Say for example the Russel's viper poisons you by making your blood thicken until your blood stops. The current antidote (which has to be administered incredibly quickly and in a very exact amount) is a huge amount of strong opiate that serves to thin out your blood. Take bees, wasps and common vipers. They all use the same kind of poison (although the viper uses a lot more of it), and it serves to expand the blood vessels so the blood doesn't circulate enough and doesn't get enough nutrition/oxygen. bees and wasps are only dangerous to small animals, and the viper is very noticeable to humans, but not lethal very often. To someone with an allergic reaction to it, the effect is magnified several times, the sting of a bee or wasp can very often have very noticeable effects or for some even be lethal. Viper very much so. One would use epidephrin to counteract it, which is a synthetic form of adrenaline.. The amount needed isn't all that precise, but you shouldn't go outside +-50% of the recommended amount, which usually is vastly above anything the body is even capable of producing at one time. What this antidote does is it makes your blood vessels contract, counteracting the effect of the viper. Using too much has been known to cause strokes, particularly in old and overweight people. These two antidotes are absolutely mutually exclusive, but they require different amounts for different venoms/amounts of venoms, and too little won't counteract it, and too much will overcompensate and usually be dangerous in and of itself.
That would make a very good argument that one size fits all health care will not work. Many people can not absorb the poisons in vaccinations but will this deter the profits of Big PHARMA or Monsanto? Not no but hell no. Should government have the authority to inject Mercury into your new born before their immune system has even had a chance to develop? That is a big "No." Very explanatory post.
Walter Smith I agree, people shouldn't be forced to be vaccinated. I may be wrong though, but I think mercury is no longer being used as a preservative in more recent vaccines? Profits is what makes them want to do anything to help in the first place though. I guess a treatment would make for more sales than a cure, but wouldn't it put them at risk for being undercut by a company that could offer the cure for less money, if the cure was indeed possible? I realize on occasion they take out patents on large areas, even ones they won't research just so others cant. There are many countries though like Norway, Switzerland, the Netherlands and so on who won't recognize medical patents who aren't being used. If Norway suddenly could cure HIV/AIDS (say it was within our reach after all), but all the US does is spend 10.000$ of the patient's money and 1.000.000 of taxpayer money on just suppressing its symptoms, and some pharma company said "no, you can't bring this cure in", that would be immensely unpopular and I think whatever president is incumbent regardless of party would see that he or she could become the hero of the day and shoot it down immediately. Or people would just start going to those countries for treatment. Either way, that would make people absolutely revile the company in question, and companies are like early teenage girls when it comes to PR.
junoguten You are wrong. It is more costly to provide single dose vaccines and mercury is still being used,"thimerosal," to preserve vials of poison for mass inoculation. Just a few months ago it was suggested I have an injection. I asked the nurse if it had thimerosal. She didn't know what it was. After her inquiry the answer was yes. I declined the poison and informed the nurse that mercury was the preservative. Hmmm. The excuse is that thimerosal is used to preserve vaccines,"poison" in countries where refrigeration is not available. Total bullshit. The parts of aborted human children are used to culture these poisons that are designed for eugenics. The termination of undesirables and nothing more than murder for profit. Do not be deceived. Multi trillion dollar entities and the corporations they own including U.S. government are dominated by the manipulation of nothing more than money and greed for control and power. Do some more research and it will wake you up.
+Lauregui wildfire is probably based on greek fire just like valerian steel is likely based on damascus steel. There's a lot of loose references to real life historic events in GoT
+Bob Bob Horseshit. Without vaccines we'd still have smallpox epidemics, responsible for half-a-BILLION deaths. 80% of children who contracted this highly contagious disease died. So much for their natural ability to fight diseases. Maybe you'd like to forgo antibiotics as well?
Tony Blaze albino animals are actually animals that have gone through a mutagenic process of which they have lost their original skin colour and it has gone white, I know what you were saying was just being stupid but anyhow, insult/prank/joke with the correct information.
Damascus or Wootz steel is still made in India, has been manufactured since 6th cent BC at least. One sword made of this steel was gifted to Alexander by the King Puru (Porus).
I bet the supplies and how to re-create these inventions are right under our noses but people are so used to the technology of today that they can't figure it out lol.
Beyond Science But-- Science doesn't actually say anything about what is or isn't possible ... It's really just a tool we use to come to logical conclusions that explain how things in our universe work. Saying Science restricts just doesn't sit well with me, or am I misunderstanding your comment?
***** don't get me wrong, i love science, but perhaps what Beyond Science meant was that because science relies on our 5 sense's which are restricted, that is that our 5 sense's can only perceive a tiny percentage of what actaully is, therefore our use of tools we use to dicover what actaully is are also restricted, science does a fine job in our little box of perception, but that's all it covers, our little box of perception, the fact that it has to be hard physical data or else it gets completely overlooked and thrown out limits it in my opinion, hope you can make sense of that, peace
***** i left my body once, and iv felt restricted ever since, these vessels of meat are a huge restriction, but of coarse that is just my opinion, peace
Kimberly Webb they get that a lot, actually. I'm still waiting for someone to focus the mirrors through a glass lens. I can cook with sunlight using a proper lens, so surely focusing as much sunlight as possible... See where I'm going?
@@diego2112gaming Instead of sunlight, souse your light with a magnesium flare centered in a parabolic mirror. We know Archimedes knew of the mirror, and manganese (oxide of magnesium) is all over part of Classical Greece- we just don't know if they could refine it, like we don't exactly know how to make Greek Fire. So far the '70s experiment by Greek scientists (with 70 aligned mirrors did work- sort of) and the Myth Busters one big mirror was a wash. Nobody took into account the higher flammability of ancient tar and paints either. My bet is Archimedes did this, and we 2000 years later have not figured it out. It hasn't hit the top 10 list for an Einstein or Hawking yet and I'm pretty sure Archi is in that class of thinker!
On Archimedes heat ray, one thing people actually miss is that they could make lighthouse lenses back then, which focus beams in a way to extend how far away you can see them
Beyond Science The amount of lost technology that we don't know about is staggering, lost in the mists of time. Just as an example, check out any of the documentaries available on the first computer, known today as the Antikythera mechanism. Mind. Blown.
Your videos are amazing and loved the final conclusion. We have lost so much knowledge and pass as "myth" or even extraterrestrial work, what we can't understand with our modern technology. See how ancient cultures just looked at the sky and knew more than the current average Joe about it. Old civilizations had an ingenuity we lack, since every "basic" need is covered and knowledge is preprocessed for us. We really need a good dosage of humility (and experimentation), to see the world with their eyes, to even have the possibility to rediscover what we once knew.
Beyond Science You are currently producing more? These are the some of the best and most interesting videos on You Tube! I love interesting science, history etc. Whatever your uploading.... I wish that I could be a part of it! Thank you for your hard work!!! :)
You've kinda got an idea of what plagiarism is but for it to have any value it needs to be a little more current than "ancient" in any descript. You may not be aware but everything here in this video are described as ancient and have been on everything from History channel to PBS... I'm sorry but the last sentence you've written I just don't get.... What "sub" and how could a "sub" be gullible?
Roman concrete and mortar are replicable materials. I took a course with a civil engineering professor in college and one of his pet project is to recreate ancient building materials and methods. The only reason we are not using Roman concrete anymore is cost: the large amount of pumice required would be stupidly expensive and we can build much more impressive projects with much cheaper and readily available materials. Also, it is disingenuous to say we don't know very well how to build with Roman conceete. Yes, we currently don't have the full range of date required to safely build with it, but that's because no one is hired to sit there all day doing structure tests on an economically unviable building material.
The so called "damascus steel" secret isn't that much of a secret. The Vikings had swords that, when looked at next to damascus steel blades from the far and middle east, were identical. Add to that the fact that modern day black smiths can replicate to process, damascus steel is identified by a certain carbon content present in the steel adding strength while letting the blade still be flexible.
+Ryan Dawson It is not cast, it's forged. It is layered, various metals of varying hardness. There is absolutely no secret about it. You can watch it be made here on youtube.
+Cody Smiley The Vikings had Damascus steel because they traded for it. No seriously. They started in Scandinavia, sailed through the eastern Baltic sea, went up one river, down another, and wound up in the Black Sea, then sailed down to what was then Constantinople where they could trade amber and furs for Damascus steel ingots. This went on until the Mongols overran the area and Viking society broke down in the aftermath. That trade route was the beginning of Russian history actually, the first Russian city state, Kiev, sat astride one of these routes. The first rulers of the Rus were in fact Vikings.
+hagamapama They also had Iron and steel manufactory since the time around Christ. Kråknäs Järnet with the right level of carbon, meaning it had already been produced for centuries in the middle of todays Sweden, before the famed Viking Swords made their appearance. High quality Iron and steel has bee produced in sweden for millenia so I can't see why people assume they imported it from the middleeast with recorded findings a few centuries younger. Just to forge Viking style weapons.
If you're a disciple of the George Carlin school of thought like myself, that second one about the universal antidote more than likely made you think first and foremost, and with a gleeful grin on your face, "I wonder how many people they made snuff it in horrible ways while testing that antidote?"
philthy122 me three. Very interesting video, looking forward to seeing more beyond science videos :) Beyond Science Btw, I read somewhere, some time ago that a guy managed to recreate "rock" used to create the Great Pyramid (and it wasn't a rock, instead it was some kind of concrete). If I find some article about that, I'll forward it to you.
Филип Брчић Actually, it was good ol' limestone. Trust me, we have plenty of samples, it's limestone. PS: Most of the shit he says here? Yeah, it 's nonsense. Actually, most of the stuff he says in general is utter horse-feathers.
Love your approach to history Mike. We tend to look down on our ancestors which seems like a big mistake to me. They had a much broader knowledge of their world than we do of ours. They were just as intelligent as we are. I am sure that a great deal of good knowledge has been lost.
The Mythbusters teamed up with _MIT_ in 2010 to do the death ray experiment, and not only did they not completely dismiss the tech, they started a small fire on a mock ship 75 feet away, but it burned out in short order, and they could only produce smoke from 150 feet. Their conclusion was that it was possible "but impractical". Considering that the ships would not be stationary targets, waiting to be set aflame, in Archimedes' time, I'd say that's a fair conclusion. Considering that the Mythbusters have been cosigned by quite a few scientists and engineers, I'm gonna take a wild leap and say that they are more reliable than a TH-camr who has no experimental evidence to show.
there is a statue of Yakshini in India. Its said to be the most beautiful statue in the world. Science couldnt explain what material was used in it till date. Its centuries old(Ashoka empire). It didnt lose its shine too.
I want to go back to roman times, I would be like a tall giant, and have in some aspects intelligence far foreseeing many that lived in that era, well obviously none of them needed that knowledge seeing as it would have been pretty much useless and most of them would have been pre-occupied with wars, and other things such as building, planting ect.... anyhow enough of my babble make a time machine and zap me back to the good old days.
+Gilhelmi Yeah you could actually call a plumber or electrician and they would turn up for the booking. Now everyone`s too busy answering phones to get the job done so they charge extra for the down time answering bloody phones.
every time period has its own standards because of the, let's call it, "current knowledge" (can't find a word right now). As years go by our technology will keep improving (and at faster rates) and then our standards will become outdated and "simple" and people will say that we lived simple lives and all the other usual BS people say :p
+egw esu I think the ancient roman era etc are such mystical wonderful times in history, in no way simple in my opinion haha, i think we do live simple lives today xD
+Patrick Allen the human DNA shows clear evidence of being tampered with. there had to be a stupidity gene so we could be slaves to mine gold for the ones who created us. look back at the Miocene era and you will see numerous bipedal human like creatures, and there's alot more that we haven't discovered yet. how would that be possible? Adam was a hermaphrodite, until they created Eve, and gave her the pain of birthing child. and not only that, we have more than 4,000 different genetic deficiencies that show up in our species, the rest don't even have anywhere near that. it's all facts.
the mythbusters tried the death ray thing 3 different times with 3 different methods and I think after all that it's fair to call the death ray busted. basically for the death ray to have worked the ancients would have needed a giant firnel lens and they definitely could not make those in ancient times.
bigtimeleafsfan with the tech that would have been available at that time, they are definitely conclusive. you can not make a death ray without modern tech. it's just not possible.
bigtimeleafsfan it seems quite logical to me. In this day an age heat rays are relatively easy to create, there are even videos instructing you on how to build heat rays on youtube. However, back in ancient times they did not have access to the technology we now possess. in order for Archimedes to have created something similar to a heat ray on such a massive scale as to sink an entire fleet, he would require a magnifying lens that is at least 250 feet tall and weighs over 80 tons. he would also need some kind of cradle that gives him a huge range of motion, and he would still need the weather to be perfect. all that together is enough for me to say from a purely logical standpoint that there was no Archimedes death ray.
Yep, the myth busters have only ever got one thing wrong.... and it was the yawns are contagious thing. Be a use they totally are. And no one can tell me otherwise
1) Greek fire is naptha with added pine sap. Case closed. 2)Universal antidote was propaganda. A myth. Case closed. 3)Archimedes is much smarter than mythbusters. 4)Cool, didn't know that about Roman concrete. 5)Wootz steel is amazing. Made in India, not Asia. Smartassery for the day.
DOUG HEINS I kinda thought the concrete one sounded fishy. You're getting wootz steel mixed up with pattern welded steel. Wootz really was a closely guarded secret made only in India. The process was lost when production was stifled by the Brits. Nobody knows how Archimedes did it but apparently he did. His "claw" sounded more practical though.
Hahahaha ok. If you want to believe in that, I can't do anything about it. What I can tell you though is that there is no continent such as India. Maybe you should brush up on your geography in social studies or google it. Your too young for me to even argue with. :)
While I don't disagree with the ever-so-subtle disdain of the statement "just because a TV show declares something a myth, its case closed," it can't be said that Mythbusters didn't completely exhaust the stupid solar ray business. They did THREE episodes on it, and they could never get it to work. Maybe there was some other lost tech that Archimedes used, or maybe it was all a hoax like Atlantis, but to dismiss Mythbusters' results simply because "it's just a TV show," is as ridiculous as blindly accepting things at face value.
I used to take Mythbusters seriously but yes I agree with the dismissive comment about them. Lately it's been about putting on a show not about real science. Using a mirror to burn something has been demonstrated on a UK TV show - science nerd or something and in any case - science backs the idea. So if Mythbusters can't make it work - perhaps they need to get back to the science instead of just blowing stuff up for ratings. IMO.
Great story. And totally agree. Some ancient wisdom and abilities we've forgotten. Reliance on cell phones and computers doesn't help us survive, when we are really animals and tied to all life on this planet.
Anthony Smith Good Sir, you get me! Yay! Don't be alarmed, but I am now currently following you. Not in a creepy way, but a Google+ way. I like the way you think, so your stuck with me forever... Yes, I'm aware that it's like having herpes, but I promise to be good! Cheers! Semper Fidelis
There's been some news on the Damascene steel. It's not about additions, it's a starting material with a high iron carbide content. It was made by accident in some laboratory.
ImaginaryMdA Yah their medicine was not as advanced (except with some cool things) but it is a myth that the ancient peoples would die younger! Greeks were known to live well into their 70's, that is if they were not killed in wars!
JessLe Berry It was mostly due to political success! Like today, certain people had access to various treatments. Wealthy and middle class Greeks, and Romans, indulged in cleanly behavior and contracted far less diseases than lower class! Not having the knowledge we do and were full of superstition but made some choices that worked well! Promoting war meant many soldiers would die but also encouraged the image of being fit which was very helpful to the gene pool! Plato lived into his early 80's as did many famous individuals. Yah it was not the norm to live that old but it did happen and more so than most surrounding people! They were lucky enough to not have to deal with plagues or famine as often as other societies! As far as the inventions, they had pain killers, disinfectants and concoctions for countering certain poisons, like in the video. They had more control over health than popular image!
unmessable12 Like I said, living a long time was not the case for everyone! Yes it was not the average age to be in the 70's 80's. There were great numbers of people who trained for the military, so their days were numbered. Basically if you were born rich you had the best chances of living a very long time! Rather than being abandoned, not cared for properly, or if you survived, made to have dangerous occupations!
Archimedes' heat ray was simple... people forget that warships of the time had hot tar on them... something that was easily ignited that most people who bust this weapon don't know... they'd coat ropes with tar and pound into any leaks on the ship.
"Just because a TV show declares it a myth, case closed." If you can't replicate something based on the information provided of how it was conducted, then yes, the possibility loses credibility. This is a fundamental element of science. Yes it was a TV show, but that doesn't invalidate that they attempted the experiment and failed to replicate the findings. If you have a problem with their methodology then say so. If not, then you most likely just have an axe to grind.
Back then there was disease and next to no healthcare, widespread poverty and war, you can forget a democracy as well... so I don't think you want to live in this times...
Actually, the pre-Persian Invasion Athenian Enlightment in Greece was probably the absolute freest period humanity has ever experienced. Unfortunately it only lasted for like 4 years.
+eddieblz what happened to the geniuses? Aristotle thought the earth was the center of the universe. Einstein theorized the existence of black hole using only mathematics. He never saw one in a telescope (impossible anyway) yet predicted their existance
Salim Safi I totally agree! There's no way of knowing anything until we start to explore some of the possibilities. I love that you are actually creating something positive to further the discussions about mysterious uncertainties rather than trying to tear apart other people's passions. Mad respect I have for you Beyond Science!
I Love your point of view and I really appreciate you making these videos and pointing these things out for all too see. Thank You for helping people think. I believe in The Great Year, a movie by this name describes the precession of the equinox, a 24k yr long cycle in which go to sleep and wake up. Archeological evidence certainly seems to show that there were many advanced cultures thousands of yrs ago. I love seeing the specifics. I think we are just now coming out of the darkest time. It may be thousands of years before we get back to living in paradise for all, yet still every choice we make today will have an effect on how soon we live a happy life. Thank You for making videos!
+Karl trembath Sometimes from the juxtaposition of the two: Napoleon offered prizes resulting in the invention of oleomargarine and canned food. And don't forget the non-melting chocolate invented for Desert Storm. And many other food-based inventions created to feed more soldiers farther from their home country.
+Akaliza Keza Gara Don't remember who said it but : "If human-kind didn't feel the constant need for *food, sex and war* we would still live in caves" Kind of extreme, but many advancements are made during war times
imagine what these ancient engineers could have done with modern materials and scientific advancements. also, why do the swords in the background have no handles?
Well ya see, currently we make new inventions constantly, over the past, say 100 years, we've developed from basic understanding of electricity as a means of triggering tiny events such as jumping from metal, through air and back into metal, to exploring the possibilities of light as an immensely more efficient trigger. We've collected enough observations to recreate just about any natural event in a lab setting, from things as simple as a bird chirping to a star collapsing. But back then, advanced techniques such as forging of Damascus steel or the creation of durable cement mixtures, we're few and far between, stumbled upon by luck (as there was no way they knew the process of forging Damascus steel formed carbon nanotubes since they couldn't observe this process) they simply mucked around with various ways of doing things and replicated a desired result once one was found.
Animal fat & a glucose/starch base liquid or maybe a version of alcohol? It's deffenitly not gas/petrolatum, purely because we use a oil refinery to separate the various fuels from crude oil, basically that was hundreds of years before we had the technological ability to Isolate those fuels during the refining process.

Yawyna124
Archimede's supposed death ray I cover in another thread here.
Mythbusters is a joke. They slap some shit together in one day and then call it a myth if it doesn't work,
jamesdagmond agreed!
jamesdagmond Their methodology is solid. If you don't agree with their findings, then follow the scientific method and perform your own experiments to disprove what they found.
True, their methodology is fine. But their testing often involves very rudimentary contraptions.
Also, I do't have the thousands of dollars of funding that a TV show has.
jamesdagmond They spend days and months with their experiments, ofcourse they wouldn't be able to show that on the final episode.
***** Yeah, and that's what everyone is on about.
RE: Damascus Steel. Nanotechnology operates at the molecular level, not the "quantum level". The quoted hypothesis is pseudo-science.
Finally, a TH-camr that understands the difference between Damascus steel and pattern welded steel.
1. Greek fire 🇬🇷 🔥
2. Universal antidote
3. Archimedes heat ray
4. Roman concrete 🇮🇹
5. Damascus steel 🇸🇾 🗡
Chirag Mohanty yeah but forged and produced in Damascus with special Damascus materials.
6. Alchemy (in general)?
I thought he was going to talk more about ancient medicine, but he did not. There are many cures (and some forms of surgery) which have been lost over time, and we have yet to reacquire them.
We did rediscover Damascus steel, though; not to mention crucible steel, which, while not as beautiful, is nearly its equal in purity.
No arabs was the first and they use it in war's man its Arabian steel even from its name a place from syria
Rashid alshamsi search for damascus knife on youtube we have been using it for years!
btw knife collector sitting with a damascus knife in my hand right now...
Oskar Duroj Bidstrup I mean the steel we discovere the steel if you have the steel you can do anything with knife sword....... BTW I have the sword.
Oskar Duroj Bidstrup
"The original method of producing Damascus steel is not known. Because of differences in raw materials and manufacturing techniques, *modern attempts to duplicate the metal have not been entirely successful.* Despite this, several individuals in modern times have *claimed that they have rediscovered the methods by which the original Damascus steel was produced.* [2][3]"
Creationsofmyown oh that makes sense so he means the original chemicals and raw iron that were used. Thanks for clearing that up!
"Is life really that much better off?"
YES, how is that even a question? Unless you like your life expectancy to be 30-40 years, constant struggle against diseases that we've since trivialized with medical knowledge, and you actually have the chance of doing something relevant and/or enjoyable in the world, while in the past, 99% of the population just worked one field their entire life... IF you were lucky enough to not be born a slave, or the "wrong" race.
+zolikoff YES thank you for this analysis! Exactly. It's good to be a realist.
redeniousmusic Yep people just love mystery and spirituality and "beyond science" (lol) and they can be fed with anything that sounds appealing.
+zolikoff my first thoughts, as well. However Roman concrete being better than our current stuff isn't a mystery. Modern concrete is just cheaper and more universal.
citations
+zolikoff Actually we can create wootz steel and the patterns of pattern-welded steel he talked about.
Wat about Valerian steel.. We still dont know how they can kill white walkers
Nice!
+Saad Ezio they are infused with Dragons Fire
Ctfu I'm binge watching now
Dragon glass maybe? so it might be mixed with obsidian in the forging process
ye and the first one he talked about was clearly wildfire
This era is perfect for introverts. INTROVERTS UNITE. Separately. In your own homes.
Always with the bed, with you!
Yaaay.........not too loud now, in case someone hears me....
The funniest comment I've ever seen
Oh no I commented to much social interaction 😱
Let's meet up at Star Bucks
The Romans used to have the workers put to death if their work didn't last, so Yeah they used the good stuff, unlike contractors these days.
Although our Damascus isn't as good as older Damascus (possibly because they were more patient with their folding and flattening over and over again.)
Damon Furlough Haha awesome, I did the same thing about 15sec of research on the Greek fire and stopped watching by the time he got to the steel. This guy needs to do a lot more research.
David Huntt I didn't research. These are all things I know from other places
The only thing I had to look up was the Greek Fire. The other stuff I knew too. I was just commenting on yours because I made virtually the same original comment before I saw yours.
I Know That Feel Bruh
great videos man! super interesting stuff! also you pronunciate your words clearly and are easy to listen to. thx!
Nathan Miller thanks for watching!!
your most welcome! gotta love ancient history! i like to think that some swords had supernatural properties or something we would probably refer to as magical. ahhhh forgotten technology!
Nathan Miller Enunciate
so to pronunciate is how a word should be said, while to enunciate is to say it clearly? i think that's it. interesting english there thanks!
Nathan Miller actually what americans speak is american. what the british speak is english.
Universal antidote? Gee, I wonder why we haven't been able to replicate that..
junoguten There is no money in cures. The current medical society of big PHARMA creates disease to sell remedies. If you are humane the thought would be to cure disease and illness
but in this society of business there is no profit in curing the ill.
That is a big "No."
Very explanatory post.
"When we think of our incestors,"
wait what?
+Not Senor Cardgage you from the gene puddle
Thts exact what I thought 😂
wtf hahaha
I heard that too
I heard that too!
The Greek fire reminds me of the 'wildfire' used in Game of Thrones.
+Lauregui i suppose it's a direct inspiration
+dqwers You suppose correctly
+Lauregui Hmm.... I wonder why... Oh yeah! That's right! Because it is.
+Lauregui and valyrian steel is inspired by damascus steel. too bad damascus steel is not as good as this guy says it is.
+Lauregui wildfire is probably based on greek fire just like valerian steel is likely based on damascus steel. There's a lot of loose references to real life historic events in GoT
Yeah, life before cellphones was ok, meh. Now try to imagine life before anesthesia.
Life before vaccination. Life before plumbing.
+Josh Adams Life before whiskey.. EWW! Gross.
+Maxx Kroes Not so luckily humans only figured out antibiotics during the last century.
+Bob Bob "whatever you want to call the mentally ill." I call them Bob Bob now after reading your comment
"Chemical reactions at a quantum level" Dude you should call your channel 'Pseudoscience'.
"chemical reactions on the quantum level"
What's that? You have no clue what you're talking about, you said?
i always knew that olden times humans had something special :p
I'm with you on that!
I bet if i understand what that means then i will laugh but i cant read that
Tony Blaze albino animals are actually animals that have gone through a mutagenic process of which they have lost their original skin colour and it has gone white, I know what you were saying was just being stupid but anyhow, insult/prank/joke with the correct information.
Tony Blaze you've lost me to the point when a search crew is useless.
The first one just makes me think of the battle of Blackwater Bay in Game of Thrones.
+Soaches those valyrian steel swords tho, need to figure out how to make em
Of course. How else are we going to fight the white walkers?
probably dragonglass. valyrian steel is useless against whitewalkers.
***** Is it really? It did help Jon kill one.
Blackfish is going to scare the walkers away :d
Three words. Magic
Nice
Insanely clever
one word : pond
Nah Aliens Brah
***** Wtf r u talkin about?
Damascus or Wootz steel is still made in India, has been manufactured since 6th cent BC at least. One sword made of this steel was gifted to Alexander by the King Puru (Porus).
I bet the supplies and how to re-create these inventions are right under our noses but people are so used to the technology of today that they can't figure it out lol.
Will Johnson I think we are so restricted by what science says is possible or not possible, never think outside of that
Beyond Science But-- Science doesn't actually say anything about what is or isn't possible ... It's really just a tool we use to come to logical conclusions that explain how things in our universe work.
Saying Science restricts just doesn't sit well with me, or am I misunderstanding your comment?
*****
don't get me wrong, i love science, but perhaps what Beyond Science meant was that because science relies on our 5 sense's which are restricted, that is that our 5 sense's can only perceive a tiny percentage of what actaully is, therefore our use of tools we use to dicover what actaully is are also restricted, science does a fine job in our little box of perception, but that's all it covers, our little box of perception, the fact that it has to be hard physical data or else it gets completely overlooked and thrown out limits it in my opinion, hope you can make sense of that, peace
Allan Bond I wouldn't say Science is a restriction, no. What you're talking about is more of a limitation. Big difference.
Thank you for your comment.
*****
i left my body once, and iv felt restricted ever since, these vessels of meat are a huge restriction, but of coarse that is just my opinion, peace
I understood incestors at the beginning.
+Atno Mornlodan lol...incest-ors....
+Atno Mornlodan Me too :D
+Atno Mornlodan Eeeey, wasn't the only one
+Atno Mornlodan that wasn't the only word that sounded weird to me in this video.
Hahaha I heard the same thing
Throwing shade at mythbusters
On Archimedes heat ray, one thing people actually miss is that they could make lighthouse lenses back then, which focus beams in a way to extend how far away you can see them
"When we think of our incest" This dude makes me laugh 😂
man I thought I was trippen at first haha
incestors
Damascus steel = Our "Valyrian steel"... oh, wait :D
you realy doing a good job, explaining your stuff. thanks, good work :-)
Tapi-TV Thanks :-)
Beyond Science The amount of lost technology that we don't know about is staggering, lost in the mists of time. Just as an example, check out any of the documentaries available on the first computer, known today as the Antikythera mechanism. Mind. Blown.
***** haha :-) yea, i know what you meaning, but nobody is perfect ;-)
Tapi-TV that's why i like this guy
Tapi-TV RIP english LOL
4:11 Middle Yeast
+Hawns321 That is what I heard too .Thank God I'm not the only one :P
I just noticed that to!!
glad I'm not the only one lol
+Hawns321 I think he just have that accent or something
Did they had yeast before Islam? They did have beer and wine.
We cant replicated Damascus steel cause we don't have dragons any more DUH!!
our ancestors were definitely smarter and stronger than man today.
+MajorInkPeoples smarter? no. stronger? yes.
Your hand gestures make me think you are about to break into a robot dance every time I see you talking.
MrEmelioestevez what do you think I was doing before? ;-)
Beyond Science had to pause the video less than a minute in just to read the comments and see if anyone noticed lol.
Try making at least 4 vids a month luv your channel
Angel Flores im trying...Thanks! Merry Christmas :-)
Beyond Science You are currently producing more? These are the some of the best and most interesting videos on You Tube! I love interesting science, history etc. Whatever your uploading.... I wish that I could be a part of it! Thank you for your hard work!!! :)
Beyond Science
you just read wikipedia as if it were a fact?
man, no wonder your channel is full of so many errors and lies.
Creationsofmyown Find some interesting subjects, open a book, research and make a better video to upload... I would be happy to watch yours too!
63legendary they most certainly did, but they were using carbon steel before these trade routes were established.
"...chemical reactions at a quantum level." Grin, titter, giggle, chortle, laugh, and even GUFFAW!!! 2-pid.
If you're a disciple of the George Carlin school of thought like myself, that second one about the universal antidote more than likely made you think first and foremost, and with a gleeful grin on your face, "I wonder how many people they made snuff it in horrible ways while testing that antidote?"
"Damascus" Steel was invented in India.
I LOVE THE END ITS MY FAVORITE PART I'M RIGHT THERE WITH HIM.
Absolutely love your channel,
Keep it up!!
So do all the top5 or top10 video channels watch each other and just remake each others vids in their own way?
Yes

It's a process. You have to wade through the nonsense.
That's an act of life my friend ^^
+talyor swift your music sucks
+Captain Slappywacks thats not the real taylor swift
Hahaha we talked about that "Greek Fire" in my History class. It was oil. Oil sits on the surface of the water and that's why it still burns. Cmon b
cool channel, subbed :)
philthy122 Thanks :-)
philthy122 yep, me to
philthy122 me three. Very interesting video, looking forward to seeing more beyond science videos :)
Beyond Science Btw, I read somewhere, some time ago that a guy managed to recreate "rock" used to create the Great Pyramid (and it wasn't a rock, instead it was some kind of concrete). If I find some article about that, I'll forward it to you.
philthy122 So far, it's been mostly bullshit, Don't believe a word he says....because it's all lies!
Филип Брчић Actually, it was good ol' limestone. Trust me, we have plenty of samples, it's limestone.
PS: Most of the shit he says here? Yeah, it 's nonsense. Actually, most of the stuff he says in general is utter horse-feathers.
@5:10 "Chemical reaction at the quantum level". Let that sink in.
You forgot the Antikythera Mechanism.
That's because we know how it works
I keep staring at his band-aid
Love your approach to history Mike. We tend to look down on our ancestors which seems like a big mistake to me. They had a much broader knowledge of their world than we do of ours. They were just as intelligent as we are. I am sure that a great deal of good knowledge has been lost.
Informative- Short and sweet. Thank you x Good job
Half of these are either explained or just false...
+Henk Van de Goor Just half? Lol :D
+JokeFlash dont forget the chinese shtt
Good realised, Sherlock!
right .. I saw 2 vids from this guy and they aren't clear at all. loss of time here.

War Zone Bet our one of those sovereign citizen types, there’s tons of fun videos on here with you folks making fools of yourselves.
Another great video :)
Masumi Gartman Thanks! Merry Christmas :-)
Beyond Science thanks! I hope you had a great Christmas!
0:01 - 0:02 "when we think of our incest"
I HEARD THAT TOO xD
+marc go those good old incestors lmao....
Was just about to post this
I heard that to
How can this man spout such ignorance with a clear conscience?
+Cellus KH elaborate
there is a statue of Yakshini in India. Its said to be the most beautiful statue in the world. Science couldnt explain what material was used in it till date. Its centuries old(Ashoka empire). It didnt lose its shine too.
And actually we are celebarating 100 years of finding that statue, here in India.
da iron one?
rakada30 The material used in it is yet un-identified.
rakada30 I think you are confusing it with the Iron Pillar in Qutub Minar Complex, New Delhi.
I am not talking about that.
Aditya Mohan it is made of sandstone en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Didarganj_Yakshi
"I remember being happy in an era with no cell phones." Ignorance is bliss.
And get murdered for their beliefs or run out of their town for being different then alter history and fuck us
seth rosas sounds interesting sign me up, hopefully I can go back in time, change the gene-pool and make us have wings or become fish like creatures.
Yes maybe not the fish thing but yes the wings are nice
***** Fish swim in their own pee you know! Wings, yeah, I could do that.
rucussing :D
Chemical reactions on a quantum level? Really?
I miss the pre-smartphone days. They were great.
+Gilhelmi Yeah you could actually call a plumber or electrician and they would turn up for the booking.
Now everyone`s too busy answering phones to get the job done so they charge extra for the down time answering bloody phones.
yea me too playing out side using your imagination and talking to friends on the phone or in person vs texting only smh

Everyone knows where Damascus steel comes from... Chroma cases
When I saw the title, I immediately knew I was gonna get super frustrated
I wish we could go back in time and ask them about these things...
Watching this today is such a hit of nostalgia. Love ya mike.
every time period has its own standards because of the, let's call it, "current knowledge" (can't find a word right now).
+egw esu Meanwhile Humanity is still Stupid LOL remember they found a Stupidity Gene not long ago.
+Scream Like You Mean It back in those days, real men existed in huge numbers. now there's fewer and fewer
+Patrick Allen matter of fact, we are still slaves to this day, to the governments and others.
the mythbusters tried the death ray thing 3 different times with 3 different methods and I think after all that it's fair to call the death ray busted. basically for the death ray to have worked the ancients would have needed a giant firnel lens and they definitely could not make those in ancient times.
Yeah... it's scientifically proven third time is the charm... and there are in fact only three possible ways to accomplish the goal.
bigtimeleafsfan with the tech that would have been available at that time, they are definitely conclusive. you can not make a death ray without modern tech. it's just not possible.
That's so ignorant that it actually hurts me physically.
bigtimeleafsfan it seems quite logical to me.
5 out of 6 of these are just myths...
The Recluse just like ur likes
One was yourself wasn’t it
What was the real one
@@tidakadalah Greek fire was real one. The rest were really talked about in enchant times but never made
Damascus steel is a very interesting concept. I can't help but wonder if it truly was steel when it was completed.
DOUG HEINS
I kinda thought the concrete one sounded fishy. You're getting wootz steel mixed up with pattern welded steel. Wootz really was a closely guarded secret made only in India. The process was lost when production was stifled by the Brits. Nobody knows how Archimedes did it but apparently he did. His "claw" sounded more practical though.
1)India is in asia!!!
2)your not smarter than mythbusters. case closed
Bunny77
India is a continent in itself. It's not part of Asia.
Hahahaha ok. If you want to believe in that, I can't do anything about it. What I can tell you though is that there is no continent such as India. Maybe you should brush up on your geography in social studies or google it. Your too young for me to even argue with. :)
Bunny77
Okay smartypants, what do you think created the Himalayas and caused the Nepalese earthquakes?
The middle yeast? XD
Iyam tarole Ingyu Plato invented Atlantis. It's a thought-experiment. Atlantis never existed.
IMO.
Where are you getting your info on Atlantis from?
@@seanbw1609 Using a mirror to burn a ship from a hundred meters is not what the show you're talking about tested though, is it?
Great story. And totally agree. Some ancient wisdom and abilities we've forgotten. Reliance on cell phones and computers doesn't help us survive, when we are really animals and tied to all life on this planet.
their was a time before the Internet ? gasp the legends are true

Did he think the band aid would just blend in? Captain America does not approve.

It's true that my incestors made an intadote in the middle yeast, ling long time ago...

Good Sir, you get me! Yay!
Don't be alarmed, but I am now currently following you. Not in a creepy way, but a Google+ way.
I like the way you think, so your stuck with me forever... Yes, I'm aware that it's like having herpes, but I promise to be good!
Cheers!

this guy cracks me up as much as the subjects he chooses.it don't get any better.is this a real job for him or a quest.
There's been some news on the Damascene steel. It's not about additions, it's a starting material with a high iron carbide content. It was made by accident in some laboratory.
If you think an era where people lived up until about half our usual lifespan is more medically advanced than ours, then you are deluded.
ImaginaryMdA Yah their medicine was not as advanced (except with some cool things) but it is a myth that the ancient peoples would die younger! Greeks were known to live well into their 70's, that is if they were not killed in wars!
Spirit Orb 1616 Please elaborate...
Spirit Orb 1616 it's not only that, the infant mortality rate was very high, which brought the average life expectancy down
unmessable12 Like I said, living a long time was not the case for everyone! Yes it was not the average age to be in the 70's 80's. There were great numbers of people who trained for the military, so their days were numbered. Basically if you were born rich you had the best chances of living a very long time! Rather than being abandoned, not cared for properly, or if you survived, made to have dangerous occupations!
The Secret to Creating Roman Concrete:
HUMAN SOULS
Archimedes' heat ray was simple... people forget that warships of the time had hot tar on them... something that was easily ignited that most people who bust this weapon don't know... they'd coat ropes with tar and pound into any leaks on the ship.
Starts throwing feces in everyone's face like an advert
"Just because a TV show declares it a myth, case closed."
If you can't replicate something based on the information provided of how it was conducted, then yes, the possibility loses credibility. This is a fundamental element of science. Yes it was a TV show, but that doesn't invalidate that they attempted the experiment and failed to replicate the findings. If you have a problem with their methodology then say so. If not, then you most likely just have an axe to grind.
I wonder if he sees the irony of that though.. since.. oh look, a youtube video says it's true... must be true.
Zdude13579 Great point man.
Domesticated Rambo Calm your titties down he was just joking, even when he had a good reason for it.
Back then there was disease and next to no healthcare, widespread poverty and war, you can forget a democracy as well... so I don't think you want to live in this times...
Actually, the pre-Persian Invasion Athenian Enlightment in Greece was probably the absolute freest period humanity has ever experienced. Unfortunately it only lasted for like 4 years.
maxdecphoenix your point is?
Not as good as we have it. Not by a long shot buddy.
my point is that you said 'you can forget a democracy as well' and you were wrong.
Wow, you... You really kinda lost it at the end there, huh?
Oh snap. You called out Mythbusters. This is why I like you.
Geniuses have been around for ever but In ancient times they were smarter.
+eddieblz what happened to the geniuses? Aristotle thought the earth was the center of the universe. Einstein theorized the existence of black hole using only mathematics. He never saw one in a telescope (impossible anyway) yet predicted their existance
+eddieblz I totally agree with you.
+Daniel Doyle Genius =/= All knowing.
+Edesse Sapere oh I know for a fact that neither Hawking believes or Einstein believed that all knowing thing. They just know allot:
dumb.
is it what WE or what YOU don"t understand?
Both
Thx for the vids man they r so informative and entertaining best of luck
Salim Safi Thanks :-)
😎 More and more items and materials are being found that prove our ancestors are far smarter than the experts of today.
Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaay Mike's back

Thank you, great video!
Interesting that most of them are weapons.
most tech comes from war and food. since man existed
+Karl trembath nuclear energy for instance. weaponizing inventions is top priority, then after that is commercial applications
+Akaliza Keza Gara our greatest inventions come from creating more ways to kill each other..
+Akaliza Keza Gara Don't remember who said it but : "If human-kind didn't feel the constant need for *food, sex and war* we would still live in caves"
Kind of extreme, but many advancements are made during war times
imagine what these ancient engineers could have done with modern materials and scientific advancements. also, why do the swords in the background have no handles?
Well ya see, currently we make new inventions constantly, over the past, say 100 years, we've developed from basic understanding of electricity as a means of triggering tiny events such as jumping from metal, through air and back into metal, to exploring the possibilities of light as an immensely more efficient trigger. We've collected enough observations to recreate just about any natural event in a lab setting, from things as simple as a bird chirping to a star collapsing. But back then, advanced techniques such as forging of Damascus steel or the creation of durable cement mixtures, we're few and far between, stumbled
upon by luck (as there was no way they knew the process of forging Damascus steel formed carbon nanotubes since they couldn't observe this process) they simply mucked around with various ways of doing things and replicated a desired result once one was found.
those are stakes or nails
lol wat a dumbass
How did I know Greek Fire would be on here...
ED8 what if Greek fire was actually gasoline
Blobfish you can put gasoline out with water.. mike says the greek fire cant.
ED8 we have recreated it tho we're not sure it's the same it has the same properties
I absolutely love this channel!!!!!!!!!
