  • I have heard and seen a lot about desulfators, But do they work and what do they do? Together with my two cousins, we setup and see how the signal from a desulfator on a Oscilloscope (Rigol DS1052E)
    If you want My PlayHouse Desulfator Kit 1.1, it can be ordered here : www.myplayhous...

    Sooooo many things done wrong on this video its comical...... AGM (absorbed glass mat also called starved electrolyte) is a special glass mat designed to wick the battery electrolyte between the battery plates, the plates are saturated with acid to about 95% of what they can hold. They contain only enough liquid to keep the mat wet with electrolyte so if the battery is broken no free liquid is available to leak out this is why the cells look dry but really they are not. +1 for getting stuck tho!

    Part of the equation here is that the battery itself acts like a giant electrolytic capacitor.
    The desulfator has to have adequate energy capability to overcome that capacitance.
    A desulfator circuit that can produce a high voltage, but without enough energy, will not produce as big a spike.
    (ie, a large desulfator that does not have as high a spike, may outperform a smaller one with a bigger spike, when connected to the battery. The smaller one may loose that voltage when connected to the battery, whereas the larger one can retain most of it's voltage spike.)
    The waveform you took is most representative when taken at the battery posts. At the desulfator, the leads are somewhat isolating it from the batteries' capacitance.
    If you charge AND desulfate simultaneously, you should have a choke (coil) in one of the charger leads, or else you are ALSO pulsing the charger diodes, perhaps detrimentally. Or probably just driving the charger monitor nuts, on digital chargers...

    best way to rejuvenate a battery:
    discharge the battery to 11 volts ( under load) disconnect this load ( for a car battery fore xample a 50 watt h4 lamp) wait 5 min to see the battery recover by itself, then recharge is - slow- thus with low amps say 2 ah with a voltage of 17....this will eventualy overcharge the battery above gassing voltage ( 14.4) for a wet or AGM type, leaf this charge on for the night mayby with a desulfator parallel, then repeat the discharging again till 11volts, then repeat, remember charging a battery is really nothhing else than desulvating itself, a GOOD desulfater can inly assist you in the proces, cycling a battery will get the capacity up!
    assuming there are no other problems with your battery, hope this helps!

      " cycling a battery will get the capacity up!"
      I can not agree with that - because every datasheet states limited cycle life. Every cycle reduces battery life.

  • @giottodiotto1
    @giottodiotto1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hi Morten, the first two to three cycles i would put the 17 volt overcharge on for around six ours, then measure the time for the discharge wirh your load, as soon as you see it improving i would lower the voltage during the following cycles, this depends on the state of battery ofcourse...

    I guess your power supply didn't like the voltage spike from the desulfator which would perhaps explain why it went off. Knowing what the desulfator does, adding a diode at the output of the power supply would block incoming spikes, although you would need to increase the power supply output to compensate for the diode voltage drop. I'm not too sure how that would go with a charger as I don't know if the charger actually reads the battery voltage. If it does, having a diode in the way may prevent it from charging as it wouldn't be able to do the reading because of the diode. That would potentially explain why some people are using basic chargers and not the intelligent ones when dealing with some type of desulfators.

    What you didn't mention in the video is that while you showed the water levels were low all the cells where badly sulphated, what would have been a good idea was to show the cells after de sulphating to show the difference on the plates

    Why would you leave the desulfator connected while you are charging? It seems the spike could damage the charger. Also, to manually desulfate, why not just leave the charger on something high like 2.75V per cell for maybe 15 minutes, then disconnect for 15 minutes, and keep repeating for maybe 8 hours, possibly draining the battery some so it doesn't overcharge.

    I'm pretty sure you aren't suppose to put water inside an AGM. Those were most likely safety vents in case of accidental overcharge. Why not research before doing something potentially damaging/dangerous like that?

    • @NigguhMake

      My PlayHouse I believe it's supposed to be dry. The electrolyte is absorbed into the glass mat. Preventing liquid spillage in case the battery were to be dropped or tipped over.

    • @MyPlayHouse
      @MyPlayHouse  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      HI Mike Scudero
      The batteries are not supposed to be serviced, but they are not dry,, they contain a gel to keep them wet. That gel does evaporates over time and the battery deteriorat in capacity. Also why there are "vents" in each cell. So the idear was to vetten the gel again.
