He is one of the ones that reminds me that we all fall, and I realize again my position and everyone elses position. He has such a special way of getting to look up. Im not religious at all, but I know what looking up means.
Now he knows the truth --- he was living in a devil town ---- and he succumbed to it unbeknownst to him and became a vampire too ---- he can change his path --- it's truly an optimistic song in a way. He WAS living in a devil town --- NOW he knows; and because he now knows and understands this about others and about himself (he was a vampire too), he can move to a better place and work towards being a better person. His voice is sweet and sad, but there is a note of optimism in it as well.
I've heard so many different versions of this song, but none have had the true emotion that this one has. Johnston's self-obsessed demonism and troubled mind really show here. I hope he found salvation.
I heard the Bright eyes cover first on FNL,and everywhere I read, a lot of people said that one was better, so i didn't bother searching up the original. But damn. This is incredible. I still love the Bright Eyes cover, but this is...haunting.
There's something very haunting about this song. Conors cover is great but Daniels original version sort of stays with you in the most frightening way.
My cousin just kicked my cat and is trying to make me believe i hallucinated or fabricated it. What a piece of work. Etiquette! Thanks for making life kinda okay sometimes when i need ya, danny.
What a poignant message about being unloved and unwanted. People can be very selfish and the most important message of this song is finding the selfishness within yourself.
Have heard this on the local radio station for years and always thought it was just an outtake from a longer song, always loved it!!!
Working at UPS back in my hometown during December when it was -30 degrees and the bosses were too cheap to get heaters working.
This was the anthem
Rest In Peace Daniel Johnston

It can be something as simple as this and it can sound beautiful.

The FNL cover is by Tony Lucca. It sounds a lot like Bright Eyes' but isn't quite the same.

Its hard growing up in a town like Austin Texas . You might end up a vampire yourself in a devil town .
***** he grew up in West Virginia, not Austin.
I grew up in Austin . I was referring to myself .

You need to kick the shit out of your cousin.
