Oh he still lives on, influencing people even after his death. I'm only 19, never knew him when he was still alive unfortunately. But goddamn his music is something else
I remember all of this back in 1978-1983. I sat in the basement with Danny and we hung out. I remember the music box with the crank handle you hear at the end of this song. I remember the piano he was playing on and plying my guitar trying to follow along. Danny was one of the best friends I ever had.
That's my tape that's the source of this recording! And yeah, Dan is more loyal and sincere than most folks!
John, you should really record your early memories of Daniel somewhere. People have a lot of misconceptions about him.

My brother Brett Hartenbach was on the journey with him as well. I can remember as a small child when Daniel would come to the house in East Liverpool and listen to albums with my brothers for hours on end and my brother Mark Hartenbach actually wrote whiz kid and later Daniel redid it. Very interesting times for a kid only 8 at the time. My friends and I were always intrigued when Daniel came by the house.

What makes Daniel so great, is that he wrote about things everyone feels/thinks (besides idiots of course) on a daily basis. Simple things. Things that we all take for granted. Then turned them into beautiful music. If you haven't watched the documentary "the devil and daniel johnston" you should.

Wow this guy really was amazing. I love that garage band/ basement recording feel. Reminds me of when I was a teenager, different music but nobody else is like this feeling. Something amazing about it.

Well put. I don't even bother playing Daniel for most people these days. Admittedly, following his work is a bit of an emotional investment, but it's so worth it.
But its like the type of emotionsl investment I feel like i put so many people through but the goodness thst came out of it was lightning in a bottle. Its deserved emotional investment because if you dont invest you'll never get a return.

It feels just as surreal as the day the news dropped. I am shaken.

I'm trying to find a song from him that I remember... it had a line in it that was something like "and everything you love will die." Anyone know it? In the meantime, I'm enjoying going through these songs and remembering all the ones I loved, including this one. =)
