I have this phone and I'm pretty happy with it overall. I'm now something of a Windows Mobile fanboy and not missing Android at all (used to have a Samsung Infuse - nice at first, after about a year it was performing like a Timex-Sinclair 1000 w/o the RAM pack).
This is a really good phone! I've been with Windows Phone for a couple years now and this is the best i've owned and used, and its on sale right now for $59.99 at Walmart under ATT. The front camera and app selection aren't that great but for the price, this feels like a top of the line phone. All Lumia phones are fantastic but this is my favorite. Battery life is good too. Same out of box charge for two days and I've been on it constantly. :PI recommend it.
***** This phone uses a sim card to operate. When a phone is locked, the phone only works with sim cards of a particular carrier/service provider, in this case At&t. As pointed out, there is an easy way to unlock the phone, or in other words: Make it usable with all sims cards out there (At&t/T-Mobile/Other service providers around the world). Hope that helps.
I have this phone for about a month and all I can say is GOOD JOB MICROSOFT! For this price range this is best buy smart phone! I was Android user for 5+ years and I decided to give Windows Phone a change and I have no regrets about that decision! I also bought hard case for it! You can check that and find Hybrid Scockproof Armor Case LUmia 640!
+MrThatblueguy Of course! This is no brainer! 30$ is very, very cheap for this kind of phone! I think that people are still bit skeptic about Windows Phone. If you are Android user you will be very, very surprised how good WP is and how fast and easy to use Lumia 640 is!
I have this phone and Its so smooth and everything about the phone is impressive for this price screen is clear responsive battery is very good and camera is really good as well plenty of storage with the expandable micro SD card. One nuisance is app support however there Is plenty of apps that will get the job done
This is a great phone and after 3 days of use I could not be happier. In Australia you can get it for $179 prepaid from any carrier. It is a pleasure to use and the app gap for most users is non-existent. I switched from a Sony Xperia Z3 to this and apart from water resistance this is just as smooth and capable.
Wow I searched all over the Internet and I have struggled to find one bad review of this phone coming from a legitimate source. I am definitely going to buy this
Couldn't say anything bad about this phone. Just got my dad one, it's is first smartphone and he is very, very happy with it. And he is a tough man to please with technology.
Have it for a week and I love it. It has everything that I need and more. It works better than the Nokia Lumia 521 and 635. I love that the 640 has NFC Offline Maps and the Camera is very good and meets my needs. The sound quality is excellent and I love how it doesn't have any TMobile Branding or Bloatware unlike other phones. Why I love the Lumia over other phones is that they put the full Windows experience and don't water it down with Nokia's own Operating System loaded over Windows. The screen size is perfect and I love watching TH-cam on it. The LTE with Band 12 for TMobile and Voice over LTE its a great phone!!!!!!!
G'day PhoneDog review is not to bad, one thing I have found with the 640 Lumia it loves the battery use, I am a low end user of Mobile phone's in general, I rarely play games and use Facebook, this is my 3rd Nokia windows phone 610-625 now 640, it is very impressive!
+Cookie W After 3 months or so of this phone, the 640 is not so bad, I have placed a screen cover over the screen which cost about 20 or so dollars in Australia, would like a bit more processing speed out of 10, I would give it 8.25, I would definitely look serious at 650 if and when it is released.
Thanks. "If and when", this is the riddle. If 650 will come in a year, I won’t wait so long even will come with better specs. However there are good deals for 640 these days.
I'm 12 and I haven't had a phone yet only a tablet and for xmas I was looking for a relatively cheap but good phone I saw this one watched this video and fell in love with the phone is this phone a good choice ???
Nathan Graffin the phone is solid but I wouldn't recommend it for you because the App Store isn't very good on Microsoft phones so you might struggle finding newer apps or games that your friends might be playing

Overall, it's a really good phone and the issues with him are 10 times lower than the issues you'd have with an Android. . 2 months ago I was tempted to go back to iOS, but I immediately changed my mind after using my old iPhone 4S for a day. Once you go WP, you can't go back. Overall, WP (8.1) seems and really is more stable, solid. If you want stability, WP is for you.
Lack of apps = I call this bullshit. Windows store has over 850 000 apps at this moment. An average person installs maximum 10-20 apps on his phone (the basic apps + eventually some games now and then when he gets tired). Only a gamer or a complete weirdo with a lot of free time would install hundreds of apps. Now, why would you say that WP is "not enough" because it has JUST a few hundreds of thousands of apps, compared to millions from Android and iOS, like you'd ever have time to install/test even 0.01% of those. :)
Great phone, nearly identical to its big brother the Lumia 830 except for the camera OIS . Not sure why you grade it as a "LOW" end device really, its more a good value mid range in my opinion.
just bought this in 2021 for R600 (around $42) - Needed a phone whilst mine is fucked and is in for repairs. Honestly keen to give it a go. Comes with 8GB Disk and 2GB ram so it's not bad as a filler smartphone.

@@moosesnWoop It's still working - I just bought one in blue. Updated to WP 10. App store works and so do some apps like Outlook, company address book , telegram messaging etc.
I had the Lumia 535 and it was so bad, the screen always glitched and became unresponsive, so I swapped it for this phone and it's a million times better! Really good phone if you aren't really bothered about apps or watching things on it ☺

I have been a huge fan of windows nokia lumia phones. I had a lumia 521 and was very happy with that. Later I upgraded to lumia 635 and there were many improvements especially the improved screen quality. I've been so happy with the lumia 635 that I don't think it is necessary to upgrade to 640 but it would be nice to get larger 5 inch screen, improved pixel density to 295ppi, 8mp camera with flash, front facing camera, etc.... Hurry up and come out for T-Mobile.... Update: I picked up an unlocked Moto G 2nd Generation on Amazon for $139.99 (deal of the day). If I don't like the Moto G 2nd Generation, I will either go back to my great Lumia 635 or upgrade to the Lumia 640.
Henry Weeden That's essentially their biggest and basically only problem. With poor app support, they get fewer users, and with fewer users, they get poor app support! It's a horrible cycle.
Henry Weeden Instead Microsoft should concentrate on making all the core applications outstanding. They're not. I rather have just that, than diddle around with a million useless widget apps and childish phone toys .
AT&T just got Lumia 640 (AND ITS BLACK) and it is only $79 on microsoftstore.com. I am currently using T-Mobile prepaid but I am considering switching to H2O Wireless and I believe all AT&T phones work with H2O Wireless. Very tempting! Even though I am currently using an unlocked MotoG 2nd Gen as my phone, I still use my Lumia 635 as a "tablet".
I am really looking forward to this phone. I like the lumia 635 but it was missing the front camera and a flash. I like that the new 640 will have this. I also like the bigger screen.
Great review, ***** I watched your review and purchased this yesterday. I was debating between the XL and this one. Decided not to pay more than double for the XL. I walked into Walmart and bought this for $99.74 +tax. What a deal. I have owned other WP (521, Blu Win HD, etc) - in addition to Androids, Iphones, even BB10 devices! I get bored easily and like to switch around. This phone is a steal for $100. Camera does an excellent job. Everything is fluid - very few of those "resuming" screens of old. And PRAISE THE HEAVENS: they have revamped the settings and grouped things together. I don't play games. I use social media (FB, Twitter, Instagram). WP is great for my needs. For the average user who doesn't need the newest games, the phone works well and is a bargain for what you pay.
+ChrisPTY507 your phone has got everything same.... the storage, the ram and even the rear camera.... its just a better processor and resolution........ there is no big reason in upgrading but you can for it if you're looking for something newer
99.99 at Walmart if you can find it. Includes free Microsoft office for a year on your PC, tablet or mobile device (limited time offer). Best work phone. If it were water resistant I'd love it more & maybe smaller screen for easier one handed use. . I own the nexus 7 but for a phone that cost 99.99 & offers so much I couldn't resist. The apps to me are good enough. Also because I got a case (which I take off & on daily), I dropped it a few times as it slips from my pocket into a couch and it didn't scratch. Also I placed it in the wrong pocket with metal and no scratch. Solid phone. I love all OS but for work this one is a no brainer. Battery life is amazing. Great screen. Smooth OS.
OneDrive not working on my Lumia 640 for some reason. I can open the app, but thumbnails won't load. Can't download any files or even preview them. *What might be the reason??*
What do you mean by "doesn't feel as tight?" How would you compare the build quality to that on the L635? I'm using the L635 now and thinking of getting a L640 mainly for the extra RAM.
Im rocking a BB Classic at the moment and I love the whole looks and OS of Window Phones. Would this be the recommended WP device right now or an older flagship model?
Hey I actually bought my 640 a month ago and I absolutely love it. The only thing I miss from BB is the hub. 8.1 is very quick and reliable. I'm running win10 10536 now and I love all the new features added. While its still not as quick or steady as 8.1, it I getting there. I cannot see myself switching from windows mobile or the 640 anytime soon. For $130 from tmobile, this phone is an absolute steal for what you get.
"Swipe up" is the one thing I miss the most. The second one is the keyboard. Here it costs 160 euros. How's the touch? Is it responsive? (Today I tried the 535 because they didn't have any other ms device and I couldn't even scroll down and now I'm skeptical!) When typing, do you mistype?
The phone is very quick and responsive. I have never had an issue with swiping and moving around the OS. I'm pretty sure the 535 is a low end older phone which might explain the issues it was having. Who knows it might have just needed a restart as all phones seems to slow down after a bit until a restart. I do miss the keyboard as well. There will be mistyping for a while as you adjust to the new keyboard but autocorrect does a good job. And when in doubt there is always voice dictation which usually works well.
Which one should i get microsoft 640 or 540. Which has best battery , screen ,Rear camera.. not a selfie freak so ... ok front camera wll work.... plse help
What's that purple lights on your desk? I mean the brand/model? Also, is this a good Lumia to start with Windows Phone? I've always been using Android but after changing 3-4 phones in the past two years and after seeing my 2013 Moto X destroyed by Lollipop I'm finally thinking about trying a Windows Phone smartphone... The fact is that they're all identical if you watch at them casually and I don't know what models I should seek if I wanna start without spending too much(this is at 150€ here in Italy right now, let's say I don't wanna go over 200€ or 250€ only if REALLY is worth it). One other thing that makes me like/dislike Androids at first is the different producer's skin on top of Android but here on WP everything's the same so what's a good one to start and what other models would you suggest, seeing this one's in particular is so popular? Oh, I forgot the dimensions of my 2013 Moto X are perfect to me(4,7" display in a 4,5" phone size) and I don't like much bigger phones, didn't get the latest Nexus for this reason because I usually wear skinny clothes and jeans and when I'm riding my bike or doing sports 5" phones are a issue. EDIT: I forgot I use my phone to work so I don't care about games and stuff like that. I do A LOT of WhatsApp and Telegram, phones, Spotify, maps, Chrome browsing(for syncrhonization) and taking tons of pictures, which is the part I fear I'd miss most of my 2013 Moto X...its HDR native function in the camera is so good the pictures come out great and my mates with iPhones or high end Samsungs always think I'm joking when I tell them I paid 220€ for this. Another thing I'd really like to have is a reaaally good screen, something you look pictures on and feel like "wow". I know it's a bit generic but I don't need much else.
AndreCorner All the apps you mentioned are available on Windows Phone except for Chrome (Google Services are basically nonexistent on Windows Phone). There is HDR in the name of Rich Capture which is really good I could sometimes get iPhone quality shots with my 5 MP camera on my Lumia 635. Honestly I'd reccomend trying out Windows Phone with a Lumia 640 or a Lumia 730/735. Not a 535 (Don't know about 540) or a 435, I've heard they're terrible.
Osorioさん thanks for the info, this is kinda bad tho because I rely on Google services quite a lot. I know Windows Phone is not that popular but their biggest competitor is the iPhone and they made their services for that, wonder why we can't have them on Windows Phone.
i have a problem....i have a set of earphones (Panasonic RP-TCM125-K) and when i listen to music they play fantastic....however i want to buy a new pair of earphones but none of them are good beacause when i try to listen through them the music very loud (with too much bass) or the voice of the singers are sounding like they are far away.....are there good earphones for lumia 640 apart from my panasonic???
Nice review. I want this phone though I can't complain that much about my 635. It's sufficient but more battery and 1gig ram is always welcome. I'm considering switching to cricket though. Even T-Mobile only has "coming soon" per the 640. Maybe I should wait.
T-Mobile versions of phones cost more though. You'd get a better deal at Cricket. Honestly Cricket isn't that good at updating devices but Microsoft said that all WP 8.1 devices will get Windows 10. With Windows 10 Microsoft has more control of updating your device than your carrier does. But customer service at Cricket sucks, they have no idea what they're talking about. The guy at the store though the Moto G LTE was the 2nd Generation. Also they have a data cap of 8 mb/s on LTE.
Thanks for the info! 😊 I talked to T-Mobile and they have unlimited texting and data where I'm going though I'd pay by the minute for calls. Cricket has texting and voice I think but I really only need data.
Way better than the 635. I tried it out over the weekend coming from Android KitKat. I like WP 8.1, but there is still some stuff missing that will keep me from using it full time (mainly Google apps and HTML5 videos in IE). Apps are getting there which is nice but no deal breaker. Just wish it didn't partition the hell out of my SD card switching back (copies of almost everything in various folders, grr)
I noticed that the camera app was in the notification center and I switched all of my easy access apps, after I removed it I realized there is no camera app under C like there should be. Can someone help with this? I don want to use Lumia Camera insead
Anyone know if Microsoft are releasing a replacement for the Lumia 735 any time soon? The Nokia Lumia 735 was by far the best overall phone I ever had and amazing value for money, unfortunetely I dropped mine into a puddle on a rainy day which killed it. I wanted to buy another one but it seems to be discontinued now, and Microsoft seem to be updating its line-up lately. Can anyone confirm?
I only have 1 sim card slot and 1 TF card slot. Why i dont have 2 slots for sim card? Is there any differance in the dual sim and 1 sim in hardware like cpu, ram and rom?/video card?
i was wondering does this windows phone tend to overheat or get hot to the touch. i was wondering becouse my windows phones have done that. probly becouse i was gaming and watching videos on 512 mb phones. if you could let me know that be great thanks.
Is the front actually glass? I used to have a Lumia, can't remember which one. But it was the same tier as this, but from 2013, had a more curved shape. The screen was garbage though. It was plastic, and missed 1 out of every 5 touches, so you couldn't type for shit on it.
Nicola Vlad Man, both are the same. Only little differences between them. On side of 730 the screen is OLED against IPS LCD on 640. I don't know about prices where you live, but here in Brazil, 730 is more cheap than 640. Read some specs about it. Good luck
So Vishal, the decision is personal. You've used both OS ? Go to stores where phones are available to explore freely ! After this, maybe you can decide what OS go.
I have this phone and I'm pretty happy with it overall. I'm now something of a Windows Mobile fanboy and not missing Android at all (used to have a Samsung Infuse - nice at first, after about a year it was performing like a Timex-Sinclair 1000 w/o the RAM pack).

I just ordered one but have no idea what colour it is,
hopefully it il be good
Been thinking about getting this phone over the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact. Think I might have to now :) very helpful review, thank you
Great review, ***** I watched your review and purchased this yesterday.
Thx a lot for your thoroughly description. It helped me lots
hey i just got this phone and i love it
Im thinking about getting nokia lumia 640 in order to replace my nokia lumia 820....do you guys think its worth it???
+ChrisPTY507 your phone has got everything same.... the storage, the ram and even the rear camera.... its just a better processor and resolution........ there is no big reason in upgrading but you can for it if you're looking for something newer
I wouldn't buy a 640. They are shit.
Nice review...I ordered one today.....
Deciding if I want this or the Sony Xperia M4 Aqua.
That was my first smartphone back in 2017.
What do you mean by "doesn't feel as tight?" How would you compare the build quality to that on the L635?
I'm using the L635 now and thinking of getting a L640 mainly for the extra RAM.
Sir, super great explanation!
Definently going to buy this phone when I get the chance
Nice review!
(Today I tried the 535 because they didn't have any other ms device and I couldn't even scroll down and now I'm skeptical!)
When typing, do you mistype?
The phone is very quick and responsive. I have never had an issue with swiping and moving around the OS. I'm pretty sure the 535 is a low end older phone which might explain the issues it was having. Who knows it might have just needed a restart as all phones seems to slow down after a bit until a restart. I do miss the keyboard as well. There will be mistyping for a while as you adjust to the new keyboard but autocorrect does a good job. And when in doubt there is always voice dictation which usually works well.
Alright. Thanks for the information.
Imma buy it.
See you around mate.
$30.00 sale @ BB at the moment.. Just got one to check out windows :)
Which one should i get microsoft 640 or 540. Which has best battery , screen ,Rear camera.. not a selfie freak so ... ok front camera wll work.... plse help
the 640 is better in my opinion :)
Sonu Saha Of course 640. Go ahead
Great phone , i've been using it for 1 month and i am very satisfied , great value for the money , maybe the best low budget smartphone ;)
xperia e4 or lumia 640 which one should i get
i love your intro :3
Would you say this is a better device than an iPod Touch? (ignoring the fact that the iPod doesn't have mobile phone features)
***** Yeah, anything is better than an iPod touch
640 vs 735.. which better?
can you use this Phone for longer than 2 years without any problems?
+emma visser Yes you can. It is also eligible for the upcoming Windows 10 Mobile upgrade.
So who this be a good upgrade from a lumai 635?
When does Windows 10 come out???
EDIT:
I forgot I use my phone to work so I don't care about games and stuff like that.
Yes it is!
i bought mine on a plan and the plan is done so how do i buy a next plan?
Thanks for the info. I'm traveling outside the US in awhile so I'll need t-mobile but I'll see. I'm not getting it right away.
Cricket also has an international plan. But I'll let you decide on what you want to chose.
Just wish it didn't partition the hell out of my SD card switching back (copies of almost everything in various folders, grr)
i need help my 640,not working my hands free,.any suggestion
this or the lg k7 which one do you think is better
what to buy lg spirit or lumia 640 ?
What is that football game you were playing on the phone?
score hero
Are you supposed to charge the phone for like 8 hours before it's first use?
+Bolly Sheers
No. It has some power as soon as I put in the battery. I did have it plugged in and charged it when I was setting it up though.
What are those cute round speakers?
Only problem I have with this phone is the larger screen. I preferred my 4.5 in screen.
What about the front face camera?
How is the camera??
+Csavier Kahlo It's 8 megapixels
lg magna (8gb) or Microsoft Lumia 640?
lumia 640 or HTC desire 526G?
Great just bought one foe tmobile great little device
So, I got stuck in the shop and it wont let me click the back or the menu button, help ;-;
29.99 @ cricket too. Has the Windows 10 upgrade been released?
yes
Available PAYG Upgrade in UK for £90, not bad.
02:16 He´s watching Netherlands vs Uruguay - World Cup 2010 Playstation version. :D
Is the front actually glass? I used to have a Lumia, can't remember which one. But it was the same tier as this, but from 2013, had a more curved shape. The screen was garbage though. It was plastic, and missed 1 out of every 5 touches, so you couldn't type for shit on it.
which good lumia 640 or 640 xl
Does it have a notification led?
Still waiting for this phone to realease here in Philippines. Been so long :(
I really need some help, I can't decide between the lumia 640 and the 735.
Nicola Vlad Man, both are the same. Only little differences between them. On side of 730 the screen is OLED against IPS LCD on 640. I don't know about prices where you live, but here in Brazil, 730 is more cheap than 640. Read some specs about it. Good luck
+Mac Miller please help me which OS is best android or windows phone
So Vishal, the decision is personal. You've used both OS ? Go to stores where phones are available to explore freely ! After this, maybe you can decide what OS go.
Do most apps work on this phone ?
