  • NOTE: This video contains a lot of SPECULATION, though based in lore and observation.
We've had a look at the Kazon as a species with the Index video but in the case of this fragmented species each sect seems to have a different approach on what it means to be Kazon.
So I did a video on the named sects from the series, loosely exploring how the sects function and how the sects do sect things with sects.
    ...Hehehe. Sects.
This is the Cultural Index a series aimed at exploring various Science-Fiction species.
For outsiders to a series to get to know the basics and maybe even hardened Sci-fi nuts might discover something new.
    Thanks for watching!

Watching this you realize, Damn did Voyager screw up.
The Kazon, while not more technically advanced, have the potential to be the single most epic, and culturally diverse species in all of Star Trek, and could have resulted in an epic story arc, over the first few seasons

That's Voyager in a nutshell; Potential, unrealized. But hey, at least it had potential. Enterprise would've died at the end of Season 2 if it weren't for Manny Coto.

The writers based the Kazons on Somali people. A nomadic race of warriors, find themselves in the hand of colonisers exploiting the traditional clan system (sects), one guy (Mad Mullah) unites the clans to fight their oppressors, they get their independence, resort back to clan in fighting, break up into de facto autonomous clan states, excessively prideful, brutal, vindictive, hostile to outsiders, little regard for their own lives let alone others, technologically lagging, and a society that is stagnant due to suspicion and continued in fighting. Lawlessness ensues that reverberates around the region (Border Wara, Piracy, Terrorism etc). They were introduced at the peak of Somalias civil war and their disregard for international law or peacekeepers. I dont hate the Kazon, they are just a product of their environment, which has made them callous and cynical. I feel like the writers could have fleshed them out a bit more, to make it more exciting.

when you were reading off the clans, and told about the ogla and the oglamar; saying the second could be an offshoot of the first. You missed one aspect i think and that is it could also have come from cross clan marrige that enough supported to make their own clan. Perhaps it was started by a maj of ogla and a woman from the pommar

I really don't like the Kazon. Yet in trying to learn more about this race, I didn't expect to find such a respectable and well put together explanation. Hats off to you for explaining them in a light that well make me hate them less.
I am curious though: did they intentionally just cake shit in their hair or does their hair naturally just ooze trundles of it out?

One important lesson available from the Kazon arc is about what brutal subjugation and exploitation do to a population of human beings. It deprives them of education, culture, quality of life. It gives them suffering, the law of the jungle, and if they break free and are barbarous, it is very much because of the cruelty and poverty their previous masters visited upon them. There are situations in the real world where this dynamic plays out, both in production of rough and desperate populations, and, in the denial of responsibility and projection of blame on the victims by the masters. People who wonder why parts of the Middle East are so "backwards", need only look to a few centuries of very cruel and despot backing European and American oppression, exploitation, and keeping of those populations as sources of cheap labor ~ their nation's resources as booty for the West... If they want to comprehend the situation in more than a narrow, nationalistic, subhumanizing, war imperialism justifying way. Janeway and Chakotay made clear their contempt for the Trabe in this regard.

I enjoy your history of the various shows and races, keep up the great work. enjoy the weekend. For me I always thought of the Kazon as a long lost Klingons, lost centuries ago while expanding their Empire. How cool would it be to see a Voyager reunion movie or miniseries to see them discover just that, Hopefully if CBS & Paramount won't stop trying to remake/reboot the original series, TNG, DS9 & Voyager with their crappy movies and new JJverse series.

    • @CelticVictory

I'm convinced that Paramount won't abandon the Abramsverse. They think it's their future and will keep thinking that as long as people keep going out to see the movies and new series. The franchise has so much potential that will never be utilized as long as Paramount is stuck in this mindset.

Is the word "mar" at the end of the sects name some sort of suffix, indicating that the sect has reached a certain level and not an indiction of a merger between the Pommar and Ogla resulting in the Oglamar? With the Pommar originally being the Pom or an offshoot of the Pom. This would match up with their naming tradition and its child and adult names.

I think I heard from some source (apocrypha?) that the Kazon ARE distantly related to the Klingons. Both groups are ridge-headed warrior races that never developed their own spacefaring tech but instead 'stole' it when they overthrew their enslavers. Methinks the original slaver race was the same (or perhaps dealt with each other, and sold-off slaves to one another), and they just don't have a very good selection of hair-care products in the Delta Quadrant.

"need only look to a few centuries of very cruel and despot backing European and American oppression, exploitation, and keeping of those populations as sources of cheap labor"
You might want to look at their history deeper, the middle east being (largely) backwards is a relatively recent thing (read starting in the 70's and 80's) and has far more to do with the increase of religious fanaticism and the oppression of those who reject that than the (rather lackluster) European colonialism of a century before them becoming (largely) backward. Especially seeing you see the same religious fanaticism in middle eastern countries that never had any European or american intervention.
The closest thing to a real world counterpart to the Kazon is Zimbabwe history, and even that isn't 1 to 1, seeing as the Brits used the already existing hostilities between different Zimbabwan ethnic groups to gain land and subjugate them (like the Trabe did to the Kazon) but after a while the native Zimbabwans fought back (very violently) started ethnically cleansing the nation and renaming Rhodesia to Zimbabwe only to suffer from massive famines and extreme inflation (still continueing to this day) as most farmers where white (and now fled or were killed and their land taken from them). This was (and is) due to the native population having little to no ability to do so themselves combined with a dictatorship that resulted from the violence.
But unlike the situation between the Trabe and the Kazon there where attempts by the white Rhodesians to create a mixed and open government, like south Africa. (not that South Africa is a particular success story on either side, but not as bad as Zimbabwe)
