      Possibly with the exception of North Korea, you can legally access the show from anywhere in the world.
      It is a commercial program, broadcast on a commercial channel in the UK, so watch away.

    Scandinavians and the Dutch quite often speak amazing English, fully comprehending most of the nuance and the jokes, however subtle. It is very impressive and not a little shaming

    • @Widdekuu91
      @Widdekuu91 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Thankyooouuu
      If we're blowing smoke anyway, can I add that the Dutch often speak German too, just so that they can communicate with their East-neighbours (who seem to know they have an awesome language and therefore don't bother learning Dutch in return.)

    • @filipzawistowski4390
      @filipzawistowski4390 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I suppose if you think about it, these are Germanic languages (although English is heavily influenced by French), it's actually quite easy for a speaker of one language to learn very well another language from the same family. So for example it's not a huge leap for an Italian to learn Spanish (Romance family), or a Pole to learn Russian (Slavic family), or a Swedish speaker to learn English (Germanic family). The problem is it usually doesn't work the other way for native English speakers, because there is very, VERY little motivation for native English speakers to learn another language. English is already the global language, and everyone is desperate to learn it. So an English speaker learning Swedish or Dutch to a high level would be relatively easy, but go to the Netherlands or Sweden and try to practice and people will see you struggling and just speak English back to you. So being a native English speaker is a double edged sword, on the one hand you speak naturally and perfectly the most useful language in the world, on the other you feel like a tit when you see Germans, Dutch people and Swedes etc speaking English better than you 🤣 Sorry for that essay.

    • @PaulMcCaffreyfmac
      @PaulMcCaffreyfmac 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@filipzawistowski4390 Essays are ok. No apology required.
      I take your point about the similarities and differences between languages and their roots, and the fact that English has become the world lingua franca and agree that many, perhaps most, English people will not learn other languages. My point was really more about national characteristics perhaps. I do not accept that any European speaks the language "better" than me (🤣) but I recognise in the Dutch and Scandinavians an ability to fully engage with the nuances that allow them to enjoy and make quite subtle linguistic 'jokes'. In terms of derivation other languages feel closer and yet their speakers don't seem so idiomatically comfortable. I have known and worked with Swedes, Germans and Dutch and have had relationships with French folk and never feel that the Germans or French are as comfortable in English as the others. I worked 25 years for a Japanese company and some Japanese speak English extraordinarily well but only one that I have met ever really got inside the language. It's a conditioning thing and a national attitude thing. That was my point I think.

A rooftop walk, some overpriced drinks at the Ice bar, a pricy visit to Meatballs for the People, and finally a trip to the Abba museum. There is more to see in this town :)

      There have been times that he has finished the food. It could be I guess several reasons he doesn’t, either doesn’t like it, not hungry or not enough time. I would say it’s more of a time restriction, I can’t imagine every time they sit down to eat the crew has to wait around for them to finish their meals before they go on to film something else.

    3:10 All you people (some below) who keep telling Scandinavians how good they are at English only encourage them to write signs like this one themselves. There are four glaring errors in five short lines of text displayed in a very public location. Stop telling the buggers they're good at English and then perhaps they might ask somebody who knows what they're doing. (And don't get me started on all the mistakes and misconceptions in Abba lyrics!)

      It should be "at," but "ABBA are" is correct English. Just as it is correct English to say "The Police are" and "Volvo are." "Is" would be correct if you speak Jamaican, but then you aren't speaking English at all, but (duh) Jamaican. More correctly Jamaican Patois, or Patwa or Patwah.
      You know there is a thing called levels? You have native speakers, then everybody else. A Swede is not likely to have any problem with an English SAT, but may stumble on prepositions. You stand on an island, but are in Australia. Not all prepositions are as intuitive.
      The ABBA lyrics were written in the 1970s. But lets dwell in the past when talking about the now. I would love to go to Bourbon Street in New Orleans, but I can't support their "peculiar institution." I just don't want my hard earned money to end up in the hands of slavers. It's a principle of mine.
      "Can you handle me the way I are?" is by an American artist from 2006. Or another American from 2009, "Concrete jungle where dreams are made of."
