Build is by far my favorite Kamen Rider series. It’s definitely for someone who wants to watch a dark and gritty series with a lovable cast of characters that the plot makes you love.

I'm very glad that I found this video. I first heard about Kamen Rider because of Super Sentai, and I first decided to start watching Kamen Rider from Decade and then watching all other seasons randomly since that's what I did with Super Sentai (starting from the anniversary season that mainly contained spoilers of all other seasons and then moving on to the next random season), but the difference is that I pretty knew how Super Sentai works because I watched all Power Rangers seasons, and with Kamen Rider...well, I only know few things that I learned from the internet or through the cross overs/Super Hero Taisens.
I did start with Decade and I don't regret it. Also, Den-O isn't the best place to start, as many people complained that it is not "Rider-like enough". Starting with Faiz, Blade or Agito is a good way to enter Kamen Rider from Early heisei, and W, OOO or Wizard would be great to enter Heisei 2nd phase. If you ask me, we should recommend something that has more classic feel to it, and then give newer people the unique seasons. And Tackle is not a Kamen Rider. "She earned the right to die as a human."
Bit surrpised W and Gaim weren't on the "start with" but then again happy OOO was. Oh and as for Showa: definitely V3 is recommended as a good starting point...you can even buy DVDs of it!
I want to point out that there is a way to watch the franchise on dvd outside Japan. Malaysia makes them for Region 0, and Toei doesn't seem to mind. Best place to find them is on Ebay.

I started with Kamen Rider Drive a week should, finished this morning. I was already a fan of Kamen Rider, but never fully went through a series until now. It was amazing! I'm watching Kamen Rider Build (the current show airing) and I was going to go into Ryuji, since I saw the English adaptation years ago, but I don't know if that should be my next show to watch.
I've always really really loved that aspect of their transformation, because the actual train sound effects and locking in sounds are actually super satisfying. It's like loud, kind of purely mechanical music to my ears. It's a bit why I like Build's transformation start up sound so much with the clanking metal and industrial sounds.
The Sentai Rider Guy same here I try watch double but TH-cam stared with their copyright bullshit I barely got to episode 5 and couldn't keep watching it cause of TH-cam but OOO I found a website so i was able to continue to watch kamen rider

Watching this video reminded of how I discovered Kamen Rider. Through Power Rangers, I found Super Sentai and, because of my love of crossovers and team-ups, I watched Kamen Rider x Super Sentai: Super Hero Taisen. I still distinctly remember Gentarou's first appearance and thinking "oh, stereotypical school punk, will probably be rude and like fighting." Dear Kazuraba was I wrong. While I enjoyed the movie, I was left fairly confused. So research on Wiki commenced and, through some flawed logic, I started with Decade. Like radicalApollo said with Decade, I was so lost and Wataru's cameo and other references flew quite literally over my head. But Decade was my springboard into the Kamen Rider world so some good came from it. Kamen Rider W, OOO and Fourze definitely sealed the deal. The way Kamen Rider can go from fairly light-harded banter to mature themes and good story telling along with interesting characters has kept me hooked on this awesome series.

W was my intro to Kamen Rider. The live action awkwardness and cg integration was a hard pill to swallow, I really had to fight with my sense of reality to sit and just enjoy the ride (especially you, T-rex dopant, you almost ruined it for me by being a barney head on human legs!) But after I got over the initial knee jerk reaction, I was really enjoying the story, and for a seriese generally targeted at young kids, it's surprisingly dark and mature at times. Afterwards, I went on to watch OOO and many other Hesei era shows. I'm waiting for Build to get more episodes before binging it. Since you didn't list many of the older hesei shows in your list of reccomendations for people new to Kamen Rider, here's some of my favorites that I'd reccomend people watch:-Blade, because it has some tear-jerker moments and a pretty bittersweet ending, and was a bit more real with the consequences of the character's choices. There's this underlying sense of tension at the inevitable choice the main characters will have to make.-Ryuki, because its a strong example of why being a rider is not all fun and games, and it's cool to see all the different reasons each rider has for getting involved and clashing with eachother. The conflict is less about saving the world and moreso about how far someone is willing to go for what they want on an individual basis.-Kabuto... Ok firstoff screw the protagonist, some people think he's cool but honestly I think he's a titanic tool. What sold this seriese for me is more the other riders, they have much more personality and likeability. The body-snatcher like enemies make the issue of who is friend and who is foe interesting as well. My only issue aside from the protag is some confusing points that just seem to pop up last-second with the plot. Otherwise its pretty good.
I find it funny that you state early on that you "shouldn't start with Decade." When, in fact, that's the one that got me into Kamen Rider in the first place. I realize though, that I'm probably the weird one, and most other people might be confused.
Well I certainly don't think you're wrong or weird for doing so, just given the circumstances with the series, I certainly wouldn't advise doing so to other peeps. That said, everyone gets into this series differently, and while I think these series are the best ones to start people off, it doesn't mean others aren't good for it too. I know a few people that started with Decade, and while I can't imagine what that kind experience may be like, I certainly won't put anyone down for it either.
The reason I started with Decade, was due to watching the Kamen Rider vs Super Sentai movie (funnily enough Gokaiger, which is basically just Decade but with Super Sentai, was ALSO my first Super Sentai season that I watched) and seeing Tsukasa in that and going "WOW! He's cool! I need to watch his show!" Then GACKT exploded all over my face.
Gokaiger was actually my first Super Sentai too, I just feel like it did what Decade was kind of trying to do a lot better, and if nothing else, a lot more coherently. But yeah I can see how that would happen for sure. GACKT tends to do a lot of exploding on faces.
I started Kamen Rider from Ex Aid after I know 'em from Kyuranger, and then Drive, Gaim, Wizard, then Ghost. I also watch Decade tho, but only the first three episodes
I got introduced to kamen rider by watching dragon knight. I decided to watch it because I'm a power rangers fanboy and krdk reminded me of it. This is also how I learned about super sentai.
Maybe you could have mentioned Kamen Rider Dragon Knight. Because it is American, some people might get into Kamen Rider easier. And the female riders in it are not portrayed only to get killed.
Lool, I literally searched for this now, and I see that you uploaded it just today or yesterday, the first time seeing anything kamen rider related was the super sentai vs riders, the one with gokaiger, thought the idea of turning into any of the past rangers was cool, and that decade was cool cuz he used cards(I'm a bit of a card collector). While I only watched 1 ep of decade (since everyone online said it has spoilers for other series), the first proper series I started with was kuuga, boy that show is dark, I've still not finished it, got about 20ish episodes left, the first series I've finished was ex-aid, since it was the latest at the time and on going, liked the gaming concept, popipippopo got annoying honestly, prefered the asuna alter ego. Build is looking interesting, like the design, and the fact that he is a physicist (I did physics at sixth form college)
Yeah Kuuga gets fucking DAAAAARK like it's by far the darkest show in the series, but it also the best when it comes to handling drama and atmosphere. Here's hoping something like that comes back to us some day. Build has been really good so far, though that's not saying much given there only being two episodes, though I gotta say, I'm a bit disappointed in an aspect of the episode from last night, but that's kinda spoilers as it's still fresh. Oh well though. Hopefully it does better in that one aspect moving forward.
radicalApollo kuuga extremely dark, like the amount of deaths was getting kinda depressing, I stopped partly due to the subs, not translating the grongis dialogues, really want to know what the hell they say, once I finish it, think I'm gonna skip agito and go to ryuuki next, unless agito is worth it.
When I was a kid watched kamen rider blade that was my first kamen rider show to watch then after the years pass my bff reminded me about kamen rider then I remembered then my friend requested me to watch kamen rider decade and it was awesome to watch then now started watching decade to build I watched the whole neo hesie series 😁
ArthurBro there are books about each series in Japanese, the places/aliens/monsters/etc but I can't find any online that have been translated. It's a shame that the companies don't publish anything or license KR / Ultraman for the US market as toku/KR/Ultraman and sentai are very popular here, on par with anime/hentai for some. (Shout Factory got the licensing for the sentai that Power Rangers is adapted from, and they have 8 series out. No word if they can get the Japanese Spiderman or the sentai before Zyuranger (MMPR).
Kuuga way my intro to Kamen Rider, and I loved it. By far Kuuga is my favorite Rider, and if I had to recommend any series, it would be that one. With the friend helping Yusuke decode his powers, his friend on the police force, the doctor that takes care of him, the tech genius and so on, it would feel very accessible to modern fans of superhero shows like The Flash or Arrow where you've got a central hero surrounded by a support team. I also liked that Yusuke's forms had definite weakness and strengths and that victory came from being smart about which form to use, and that Yusuke is probably one of the few heroes to actually wonder if getting more powerful is a good thing. Overall, great series.
Hey man Good Video bro. I had the stupid idea of watching Decade when I was younger thinking it would give me insight to the other riders. Sadly no it didn't so I watched Double/W and I LOVED it.
You know it's odd. That's what I think people would want out of a show like that, but it didn't deliver, and when Toei tried their hand at something somewhat similar with Gokaiger, they actually nailed that concept of having a show that gave some insight on past shows really well. In a way I'd love for Toei to take another stab at Decade or something like it, now that they've, I'd think, learned from the past some?
Yeah Gokaiger was Better then Super Megaforce. Or Masked Rider even was Trash too till Dragon KNIGHT showed up and it was good. Toei should try another stab at Decade with Gokaigers story elements.
sorry to be that guy but, even the newer heisei series have some pretty dated cgi as well, nad their special effects are not that good to begin with... and lets be honest, the wire work in ghost is atrocious at best...
Hey you can't just dis old Shoa effects. Sometimes it's just better to have practical effects and fighting over cgi or wire ones. I mean I'm not saying that much of the effects aren't outdated but to generalize the old and give a range for the new kinda bugs me.
Kissasian or jatoku are some websites that help you watch kamen rider and super sentai also Ultraman ext ext but if you find a official website to watch it on then watch it to support the shows
i feel like you shouldve elaborated more on the showa series like v3 or super 1 or showa amazon. cause while i love the hesei series to death i feel like its good to introduce new fans to the base of kamen rider in the showa series like how kamen rider gave the foundation, v3 was the first to show how different each rider would be from each other and amazon would show that its not all gonna be the same and differ greatly in style and story from the others. And i agree with your recommendations but i would also add in gaim. that season pretty much made a new kind of standard for kamen rider in writing and acting as well as its transition from light hearted and kid friendly to game of thrones level of pain when you see a character get written off.
In a way I agree. I probably should have dipped into what OG Kamen Rider was about at least a little bit, but I decided to not do that for the sake of time. That and in the end, it's something people would probably get to know just from watching Heisei alone, and I don't know how I feel about people starting in the Showa era for their first Kamen Rider outside of Black and Black RX. Some people would probably have no problem with it but I don't think it'd be a kind of universal thing, Gotta start new peeps with more modern stuff and then work back ya feel me? In regards to Gaim, I actually SUPER dislike Gaim for a whole ton of reasons, so I wouldn't really put it in this video because I... don't actually have much nice to say about it. I didn't really want to come down on any series in this video, and even with Decade, that was more of a warning in general. Gaim would be another thing entirely. Maybe another video for another day.
radicalApollo yeah I guess your right about the Showa thing it's just I thought it'd be a good idea to show how kamen rider has evolved over the years since I'm only 19 but I've watched a ton of shows stuff when I was young and it made me appreciate kamen rider and other tokusatsu of that era more because of how much they borrowed and improved from each other. Hell one of the reasons fourze is one of my favorites is because of the hidden references in it to the Showa era while not making it glaringly obvious. And while I am kinda disappointed with your opinion on gaim I can't say I don't understand since ever fan is different in taste and preferences, one of my least favorite is kabuto though that has more to do with the main character then anything else, I mean he's cool in a way but the way they wrote him made him seem like a human deus ex machina
Yeah Tendo is a bit of a cartoon character in how amazingly over the top great at everything he is, but in a way that's the charm of him to me I guess. In the end, everyone consumes media differently, and not everyone agrees, but as long as it's fun for people it's all good. Maybe at some point I'll do a video that's a bit more focused on the history of Kamen Rider, rather that one that's made to get people into the series as cleanly as possible.
radicalApollo maybe you can make comparisons of kamen rider to other contemporaries like marvel heroes and other super heroes or even pro wrestling which would actually make sense considering that one of THE biggest fans of kamen rider is a top pro wrestler in Japan. Making a comparison with other forms of entertainment could help convince people to give the franchise a shot or even give long time fans a perspective on it
I actually do want to make a video that compares the suspension of disbelief that can connect between wrestling and tokusatsu, because I noticed a trend in it being easier to get someone into the other if they were already a fan of one. The amount of crossover between wrestling fans and Toku fans is actually pretty heavy.

steven310250 honestly it depends on your taste. Sentai is usually a lot more kiddy and shallow whereas Kamen rider can be a bit deeper. Like gaim or Kabuto or build (rn at least). But some are even worse than Sentai in terms of shallowness and story telling
husen boriwala Funny, that was more or less the same thing that someone said to me last year when I started watching KR: "The good Kamen Rider seasons are far better than Sentai, but the worst Kamen Rider seasons are far worse than anything in Sentai". I quite like the experimental nature of KR, but I do want to give a chance to Super Sentai one day, too.
There ARE sentai that aren't really kid friendly as some are, and that PR doesn't dumb down to death. I liked Jetman, Liveman, Fiveman, Bioman and the earlier ones were more military/technology based IMO, Battle Fever J is cheesy but played straight AND is a Marvel Comics inspired series as Toei's Spiderman is. From Wikipedia article about the series: "As of 2015, the series has become one of the most popular and darkest entries in the Super Sentai Series. It officially gained a much wider audience and got a rating of 7.1% average, beating Fiveman's 6.5%. Despite the series also receiving criticism for adding "romance drama to a children's show", Gai Yuki became an instant hit with Japanese mothers, who sent clemency pleas to TV Asahi so that they did not kill him off. Gokaiger was actually my first Super Sentai too, I just feel like it did what Decade was kind of trying to do a lot better, and if nothing else, a lot more coherently. But yeah I can see how that would happen for sure. GACKT tends to do a lot of exploding on faces.
I started Kamen Rider from Ex Aid after I know 'em from Kyuranger, and then Drive, Gaim, Wizard, then Ghost. I also watch Decade tho, but only the first three episodes

Maybe you could have mentioned Kamen Rider Dragon Knight. Because it is American, some people might get into Kamen Rider easier. And the female riders in it are not portrayed only to get killed.
It may be a matter of what genre you're into before you start watching Kamen Rider. For me, I started with Wizard.

Lool, I literally searched for this now, and I see that you uploaded it just today or yesterday, the first time seeing anything kamen rider related was the super sentai vs riders, the one with gokaiger, thought the idea of turning into any of the past rangers was cool, and that decade was cool cuz he used cards(I'm a bit of a card collector). While I only watched 1 ep of decade (since everyone online said it has spoilers for other series), the first proper series I started with was kuuga, boy that show is dark, I've still not finished it, got about 20ish episodes left, the first series I've finished was ex-aid, since it was the latest at the time and on going, liked the gaming concept, popipippopo got annoying honestly, prefered the asuna alter ego. Build is looking interesting, like the design, and the fact that he is a physicist (I did physics at sixth form college)
Yeah Kuuga gets fucking DAAAAARK like it's by far the darkest show in the series, but it also the best when it comes to handling drama and atmosphere. Here's hoping something like that comes back to us some day.
Build has been really good so far, though that's not saying much given there only being two episodes, though I gotta say, I'm a bit disappointed in an aspect of the episode from last night, but that's kinda spoilers as it's still fresh. Oh well though. Hopefully it does better in that one aspect moving forward.

ArthurBro there are books about each series in Japanese, the places/aliens/monsters/etc but I can't find any online that have been translated.
It's a shame that the companies don't publish anything or license KR / Ultraman for the US market as toku/KR/Ultraman and sentai are very popular here, on par with anime/hentai for some.
(Shout Factory got the licensing for the sentai that Power Rangers is adapted from, and they have 8 series out. No word if they can get the Japanese Spiderman or the sentai before Zyuranger (MMPR).

Kuuga way my intro to Kamen Rider, and I loved it. By far Kuuga is my favorite Rider, and if I had to recommend any series, it would be that one. With the friend helping Yusuke decode his powers, his friend on the police force, the doctor that takes care of him, the tech genius and so on, it would feel very accessible to modern fans of superhero shows like The Flash or Arrow where you've got a central hero surrounded by a support team. I also liked that Yusuke's forms had definite weakness and strengths and that victory came from being smart about which form to use, and that Yusuke is probably one of the few heroes to actually wonder if getting more powerful is a good thing. Overall, great series.

You know it's odd. That's what I think people would want out of a show like that, but it didn't deliver, and when Toei tried their hand at something somewhat similar with Gokaiger, they actually nailed that concept of having a show that gave some insight on past shows really well. In a way I'd love for Toei to take another stab at Decade or something like it, now that they've, I'd think, learned from the past some?
Yeah Gokaiger was Better then Super Megaforce. Or Masked Rider even was Trash too till Dragon KNIGHT showed up and it was good. Toei should try another stab at Decade with Gokaigers story elements.

sorry to be that guy but, even the newer heisei series have some pretty dated cgi as well, nad their special effects are not that good to begin with... and lets be honest, the wire work in ghost is atrocious at best...
Hey you can't just dis old Shoa effects. Sometimes it's just better to have practical effects and fighting over cgi or wire ones. I mean I'm not saying that much of the effects aren't outdated but to generalize the old and give a range for the new kinda bugs me.

i feel like you shouldve elaborated more on the showa series like v3 or super 1 or showa amazon. cause while i love the hesei series to death i feel like its good to introduce new fans to the base of kamen rider in the showa series like how kamen rider gave the foundation, v3 was the first to show how different each rider would be from each other and amazon would show that its not all gonna be the same and differ greatly in style and story from the others. And i agree with your recommendations but i would also add in gaim. that season pretty much made a new kind of standard for kamen rider in writing and acting as well as its transition from light hearted and kid friendly to game of thrones level of pain when you see a character get written off.
In a way I agree. I probably should have dipped into what OG Kamen Rider was about at least a little bit, but I decided to not do that for the sake of time. That and in the end, it's something people would probably get to know just from watching Heisei alone, and I don't know how I feel about people starting in the Showa era for their first Kamen Rider outside of Black and Black RX. Some people would probably have no problem with it but I don't think it'd be a kind of universal thing, Gotta start new peeps with more modern stuff and then work back ya feel me?
In regards to Gaim, I actually SUPER dislike Gaim for a whole ton of reasons, so I wouldn't really put it in this video because I... don't actually have much nice to say about it. I didn't really want to come down on any series in this video, and even with Decade, that was more of a warning in general. Gaim would be another thing entirely. Maybe another video for another day.
radicalApollo yeah I guess your right about the Showa thing it's just I thought it'd be a good idea to show how kamen rider has evolved over the years since I'm only 19 but I've watched a ton of shows stuff when I was young and it made me appreciate kamen rider and other tokusatsu of that era more because of how much they borrowed and improved from each other. Hell one of the reasons fourze is one of my favorites is because of the hidden references in it to the Showa era while not making it glaringly obvious.
And while I am kinda disappointed with your opinion on gaim I can't say I don't understand since ever fan is different in taste and preferences, one of my least favorite is kabuto though that has more to do with the main character then anything else, I mean he's cool in a way but the way they wrote him made him seem like a human deus ex machina
Yeah Tendo is a bit of a cartoon character in how amazingly over the top great at everything he is, but in a way that's the charm of him to me I guess. In the end, everyone consumes media differently, and not everyone agrees, but as long as it's fun for people it's all good.
Maybe at some point I'll do a video that's a bit more focused on the history of Kamen Rider, rather that one that's made to get people into the series as cleanly as possible.
radicalApollo maybe you can make comparisons of kamen rider to other contemporaries like marvel heroes and other super heroes or even pro wrestling which would actually make sense considering that one of THE biggest fans of kamen rider is a top pro wrestler in Japan. Making a comparison with other forms of entertainment could help convince people to give the franchise a shot or even give long time fans a perspective on it
I actually do want to make a video that compares the suspension of disbelief that can connect between wrestling and tokusatsu, because I noticed a trend in it being easier to get someone into the other if they were already a fan of one. The amount of crossover between wrestling fans and Toku fans is actually pretty heavy.

Which is honestly better? Kamen Rider or Super Sentai? I don't think both is an answer, I know they're both fun and easily enjoyable to people. What I mean is which is better in terms of story telling, no fillers, controversial topics & elements in a deep level of philosophical thinking? Also I notice a lot of riders like to beat the hell out of each other compare to Super Sentai. Why is that?
steven310250 honestly it depends on your taste. Sentai is usually a lot more kiddy and shallow whereas Kamen rider can be a bit deeper. Like gaim or Kabuto or build (rn at least). But some are even worse than Sentai in terms of shallowness and story telling

I quite like the experimental nature of KR, but I do want to give a chance to Super Sentai one day, too.
There ARE sentai that aren't really kid friendly as some are, and that PR doesn't dumb down to death.
I liked Jetman, Liveman, Fiveman, Bioman and the earlier ones were more military/technology based IMO, Battle Fever J is cheesy but played straight AND is a Marvel Comics inspired series as Toei's Spiderman is.
