My daughter is half way though an MSc in Edinburgh and we have her to thank for discovering this wonderful city. We have stayed there on three occasions in the last 15 months and it has quickly become one of my favourite cities, if not my very favourite.

I moved to Edinburgh from Canada a couple of years ago and while it's become commonplace to look up and see this beautiful architecture, there are moments where the beauty is brand new and I can't believe how lucky I am to live here. I love travelling but am always happy to come back to this beauriful city.❤

I was a Research Fellow in Edinburgh University for 6 years.
The Department I was in had a building next to Greyfriars Churchyard.
There is a lot to like about the city.
It is 400 miles north of London, so summer evenings are long (although winter days are short)
[Actually, the whole of the UK is north of the whole USA, except Alaska. But the Gulf Stream keeps us warm.]
The rail bridge over the River Forth just outside Edinburgh is worth seeing. It was built in 1890 and has a unique design.
The most spectacular Scottish scenery is in the Highlands and Islands on the west coast.

4:45 - Foam earplugs and artillery earmuffs, vital travel items for keeping unwanted noise at bay. :)
9:30 - My brother used to live in Victoria St., just a little further down, while I went to uni there in Grassmarket for several years in the late 80s (Heriot Watt, before everything moved to the campus outside the city). Many good memories. If you're in Grassmarket, pop into Bill Baber Knitwear, tell Bill that Ian the SGI guy says hi. :D
I remember my brother's flat had a normally-sealed exit, an old ornate iron door, onto one of the obscure paths often used by the ghostly tours; at night, his flatmate loved to wait for a tour group to go by and then bang several times on the door, scaring the heck out of both the tourists and the tour guide, she thought it was hysterical. So if you hear strange things during a ghost tour, could well be locals having a laugh.
14:15 - So glad you wandered round there, cemeteries have long fascinated me, inparticular why the older the plot, the larger and/or more elaborate the headstones tend to be. Sometimes the inscriptions can be quite extraordinary.
There are so many great things to see in Edinburgh, many of them off the main tourist trail, often simple but fascinating. The lower church at the west end, the cemetery at Greyfriars, curious sidestreets further down the Royal Mile (and the Museum of Childhood, for which, when I went there way back, admission was free), all sorts of awesome shortcuts and alleys, such as those which go from the Royal Mile down toward Cockburn Street, others into Market Street (these often have little cafes, pubs or other curious shops). One could write pages of worthy sights; I recommend the channel Clan Broonford, he's covered many of Edinburgh's hidden gems and curious facts.
Must admit I find the city centre too busy these days, but seeing the city afresh through your eyes, I'll concede to a brief dip in my middle aged cynicism. :)
Handy tip: for some great photos of the castle from Princes St., try just going to the top floor of any of the larger department stores to obtain unobscured views from the south facing windows.

A couple of years after visiting Paris I visited Edinburgh and was amazed. I found Edinburgh to be much more romantic than Paris and the people are a lot more welcoming but the city itself, the architecture and the little alleys etc is much more romantic and fairytale like than Paris.

I was born in Edinburgh on October 2, 1987, at the age of 26. I've loved it from that day onwards. I married a girl from there and our daughter was born in the very hospital I had a room in on that wonderful day I first arrived. I've been to many magical places in my life, but none touch the joy and wonder I experience every time I set foot in Auld Reekie. You should go there. Now. Don't waste time!

6:07 That's cos Edinburgh Castle IS up there lol, There's been settlements in Edinburgh since 8500 BC though. It's OLD. That's why it looks the way it does. The Old Town can be traced back to the 7th Century AD. OLD lol
7:40 Calton Hill is a better view that that, you can see a lot more. It's the opposite from where they are and it's higher.
8:14 The hill in the background is Arthur's Seat, GREAT view from there but it's a hell of a trek.
12:05 Dude, You can order those online and have them shipped. The Knights' Vault has a website. There's more authentic smiths in Scotland than that though.

Welcome to Scotland guys - You'll find many historic places to visit outside of the cities too. Also Charles Dickens visited the graveyard and "stole" the name Ebenezer Scrooge from a headstone there. It wasn't evident from the video but do you guys know the story of Greyfriars Bobby (the dog) from that graveyard too? Worth a google if you don't. Edinburgh, whilst stunning, really is a tourist trap in places - especially the Royal Mile. Stevie B summed things up well, and we're always happy when we, us Scots, hear Edinburgh not being slaughtered. As for the rest of our small, glorious, country - there's so much to see, explore, hear, and soak up. Edinburgh gets all the attention, but Glasgow is equally as stunning, even in the city centre if you look up. The rest, we've got the castles, we've got THAT glen (and many many others), there's THAT viaduct, and all our lovely islands beyond Skye. One area that is often overlooked is Dumfries and Galloway.

Great video .. I’ve just subscribed
After probably 20+ years without being on a train, for my wife’s 60th birthday last November we had a short break in London, travelling down from Newcastle.
We had a brilliant time, so much so, we immediately booked a few more trips. In March we had 3 days in Edinburgh (my 65th) followed by 3 in Glasgow in May, 3 more in London in August and last month 2 in Manchester and 2 in Liverpool. Already booked for 2024 are Edinburgh again in January, Leeds/York in March and Glasgow next June.
We are loving the travel experience .. we just wish we had started when we were younger.
Looking forward to your next videos having watched all yours last night.
    Regards from Whitley Bay

I worked in central Edinburgh when I was going through university. Classic question asked by a tourist.
The city is gorgeous but it seems weird that they built the castle so close to the train station.
I couldn’t think of a reply. Just smiled and served them whisky and coke😢as requested!
