    from what i understand, the reason igon's sign is within the arena is because summoning an NPC outside of the arena will buff a boss's healthbar by 1.5. so he's in there so you can progress his quest without suffering the consequence.

    The issue with bosses in these games is that Miyazaki knows people beat them multiple times. Some lunatics no-hit every game consecutively or use bananas for controllers. While these obviously aren't the average player they do illustrate an issue: the dedicated fans, the ones they are counting on to buy each new game, are getting better at them.
    I played Demon's Souls Remake after Elden Ring, and it was so, so easy. The issue with Elden Ring's bosses is that it's harder and harder to design interesting bosses that are hard enough for the ever increasing skill level of the people most likely to buy the games. So it's skewing towards less fun designs even while some good and hard ones do still exist. Part of what Sekiro and Bloodborne did well is having combat mechanics that were different, so all the Dark Souls fans hadn't already mastered them and they didn't need to sacrifice fun to make them harder.
    Also if you played the rest of the Souls games that would be awesome. And anyone who tells you not to play Dark Souls 2 is wrong don't listen to them.
    Thanks for the content and I hope your family is doing awesome.

      TL;DR version : They just made all the bosses "star wars kid" and have them flail around and do massive AOE damage.

    • @bravepenguin
      @bravepenguin หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I mostly agree but I think you're missing a couple of key points. It's hard to compare Demon's Souls to Elden Ring bosses because DeS bosses focus on gimmicks and puzzles - Dragon God and Storm King come to mind as extreme examples, though an argument could be made for other bosses like Phalanx, Old Hero, Fool's Idol, Adjudicator etc. The amount of "honest fights" is comparatively low. Meanwhile, Elden Ring is 99% straight fights in a symmetrical arena against a Big Guy with a Big Weapon, because that's what Souls vets want... Yet the open world format also allows folks to just find good items and steamroll everything.
      In short, the decision to:
      A) make most bosses less unique (i.e. reduce the number of fights that have their own gimmicks/tricks/rules)
      while also B) allowing people to cheese just by exploring the world
      and C) having no new mechanics (outside of spirit ashes)
      has led to a weird state where the bosses are all kinda samey in their difficulty but none feel very "fair," yet also don't require any actual practice to defeat. It's kinda boring honestly, after completing the game I have to say the most fun I've had with ER has been watching other streamers tackle it.
      Anyway, John should play Sekiro. After his BB playthrough I think he'd have a grand time with that game.

    • @bludgeon1081
      @bludgeon1081 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@bravepenguinNone require practice to beat? That is just not true. With enough time and patience, you can completely learn a boss's moveset and beat them without "cheese". I can completely understand if people don't have the time to learn the bosses though.

    • @Gruso57
      @Gruso57 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @avidwriter2882
      What a bad generalization. Aside from like two bosses they are all still fair. They just require time and effort to learn. Its disingenuous to say they "flail" around just because you or John wont take time to actually learn how a boss fights. The flailing is being done by players just hoping and praying they dont get hit as they panic roll around the arena meanwhile they blame game design instead of themselves. Its classic FromSoft scapegoating

    • @Gruso57
      @Gruso57 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @bravepenguin
      If you aren't practicing for the Elden Ring bosses then you are either overpowered for them or are using spirits as an aide. Which is fine but thats a decision you made, not FromSofts. Go try a rune level 1 run and tell me a boss doesnt need practice.

  • @nightlyvalkyrie313

    I really get some of your critique on the boss design. When it came to Bayle, for some reason I decided to dedicate a few hours to grinding out the fight with no Igon and no spirit ashes. And when I won, I did get that great feeling of overcoming a huge obstacle. It was amazing, and Bayle is now one of my favorite bosses for it. At the same time though, not everyone can set aside several hours to fight just one boss while placing such limitations on themselves. I fully endorse using everything the game gives the player to win, but sometimes it seems like boss design falls flat when that happens. I think it's an unfortunate symptom of Elden Ring picking up where the Dark Souls series left off in building more and more upon the complexity of the previous systems. Even the base design of Elden Ring falls prey to this, it had to be bigger and better so they made it open the world, and while its a great open world, there are cracks. And so the same goes for the bosses. They're bigger and stronger than ever before and because of their stretching the fighting system to the absolute limit, they're starting to expose the cracks in its design.

  • @Nomit12345

    About your midway-video boss criticism, as someone who has played all Soulsborne games/Sekiro - I agree. As much as I love Elden Ring, I see more and more conversation on how they have really started to overtune the bossfights. The player, on the other hand, still has the (mostly) same toolkit as usual. It's like playing a one-sided DMC fight. Other games like Bloodborne and Sekiro has mechanichs like the rally and deflect to off-set the hyper aggression of their bosses. Hell, Lies of P shows how this deflect mechanic could function within a Souls game, but Elden Ring instead only has a jump button, which feel unreliable at time. I really hope they change their approach to player aggresion in the next games OR just make the bosses a bit more deliberate, less spectable. They still know how to! The boss at the end of the area you're about to enter is my favourite in the DLC, because it is a lot more deliberate of a fight.

    I would recommend not trying to pull off the base game move of summon Mimic as soon as you enter a boss arena, the DLC bosses are intentionally designed to close the gap as soon as you enter.
    If you'd rather not change the habit, there's a crystal tear that gives you a shield for one hit. That should help with summoning.

    The biggest flaws this game has is:
    1: You can't see shit when fighting bosses and it's cheap.
    2: Everything in this game does absurd damage while having endless attacks and little time for the player to be able to get their turn to hit the enemy.
    3: Combine 1 and 2 and you have a recipe for poor boss/game (debatable) design. But that's the only serious issue the game has. Which is a turnoff for many.
    4: The community's "git gud" mentality and hyperinflated ego they have towards anybody who doesn't unga bunga 1v1 melee jump attack spam everything in the game.
    It's always been a game (souls/like series really) that I like to watch but hate to play.

      Wish I could do more than just like this comment because you've definitely hit the nail on the head. Souls games just test my patience WAY too much and for something that's meant to be relaxing, it's too much, and when you try to engage with the community, especially for help as a new player, I've found they just basically laugh at you for not being a master at something you've just started, I don't think I've engaged with another community like it

  • @djbeema

    Speaking as someone who has obsessively platinumed every Fromsoft game since Demon's Souls on PS3, I think your critique of Elden Ring is completely on point. (Admittedly, Bloodborne is also my favorite game, so I may be a bit biased)
    I absolutely love the world and exploration and many other aspects of Elden Ring, but the bosses have always left a mostly spur taste in my mouth. A lot of them feel like they were created with the sensibilities of Sekiro, more action focused, while leaving the player character in more of a Dark Souls design. It feels confused and uneven in that way. I agree that the fights seem balanced around the use of spirit ashes and other summons, as well as abuse of things like bleed, for everyone except the most dedicated players. And like you said, when I beat a boss, I feel more just a sense of relief that it's over rather than the sense of accomplishment I've felt in previous games. Like you, maybe I have simply reached a different point in my life where I no longer have the time, energy, or inclination to spend hours learning every move of a boss to fight it without "cheese". It makes me happy seeing what a fond place in your memory Bloodborne still holds. I don't know how you feel about more straight up action games, but I might recommend giving Sekiro a try. I found it very difficult, but your character is on a much more even playing field with the bosses than in Elden Ring, and it rewards aggression somewhat like Bloodborne.
    Ps: glad to see I'm not the only one Bayle sucker "punched" with his grab attack as soon as he appeared for the first time. That grab attack is absolute horse shit and has almost zero readable windup. Glad you finally found Igon's summon. It can be hard to see with multiplayer messages all over the place. Hopefully you've found Hornsent's summon inside of Messmer's room by now as well. And yeah, the lock-on point for Bayle and for ancient dragons is absolute trash. I have no idea why they didn't make it the same as regular dragons with lock on points on their feet and mid section as well. It completely screws up the camera

    I have similar issues with the boss design. It feels like you're a Dark Souls 3 character fighting Elden Ring bosses at times.
    My advice, if you want to take it, is to focus on stance breaking bosses rather than whittling down the health bar. Get a hammer like Great Stars with the cragblade ash of war. Do jump attacks and charged heavies. You will get a few early crits in most boss fights, I promise. You would need to repec into a strength build too in order to get the most out of it.

      Lock on can be outright bad on some bosses, so it's not always the nonplusultra. I've seen other streamers struggle for hours and hours on a big boss bc they just are unable to play without locking on.

    Elden Ring and every FromSoft game is about learning patterns. People can finish the game without getting hit once with a level 1 character. If you can't dodge a boss that is on you, not the game design. Bloodborne is an earlier title that came out in 2015. With each new title the enemies and bosses are becoming faster and harder because gamers are becoming more and more demanding. If you had Dark Souls 1 bosses for Elden Ring the game would be a 6/10. If you even play the older titles you will notice a HUGE difference in openings from bosses and how slow they move.
