Forcing today's University students to think can be very triggering. Part of the reason Starkey got #cancelled is because he didn't reaffirm the ridiculous worldview of his fragile millennial pupils, and instead challenged them. I have always found George V a strangely soothing monarch- reassuring, old fashioned standards, a little dull. Rather pleased to realise that there was so much more to him. I admire him even more now.

    • @DS9TREK
      @DS9TREK 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

He was dull but brutal when needed. When the Tsar was overthrown in Russia, Prime Minister Lloyd George arranged for the Tsar and his family to be brought to the safety of England. But George V opposed their arrival fearing it would encourage his overthrow in the UK.
So he implored Lloyd George to cancel the rescue but the prime minister refused to even consider it because the Tsars wife and 3 daughters were British citizens.
So the king went to individual cabinet members and scared them, with tales of revolution, into supporting him and asking them to pressure the prime minister. In the end, Lloyd George decided to hold a vote of the cabinet and follow the majority view. They voted to side with the King. And the rescue was cancelled.
A short time later, George V's beloved cousin Tsar Nicholas II and his British wife and daughters were taken down to a dark dingy basement and executed by firing squad.

@Fredrik Larsson I don't think it is reversible. The old Lords are gone, the new Lords (government cronies) are not desirable - unless you take the appointments away from the cabinet and return zurn it solely to the King. One could replace the Lords with an elected chamber that represents regions (like in federal systems) or certain professional/society groups (Bavaria once had such a chamber) - right I would not want the second variation to be implemented as it seems pretty clear which groups would be represented.

George V is one of our most underrated monarchs, and certainly the last truly great King we’ve had as he was able to personally negotiate and deal with political figures whenever crises arose while still being above party politics, whereas it would be unthinkable for Elizabeth to do the same.
He should stand in the popular consciousness as important as Henry VIII, but he’s largely just known as the Queen’s grandfather and just another on a list of names but oddly enough, I think that’s exactly how George would have wanted it, not to cover himself in glory or unnecessary honour but to have protected the Monarchy and ensured its smooth sailing for more than a century after his death… not that it would have been possible for him to guess how his great-grandchildren might damage that institution but that’s a separate topic.
George V will always stand as a committed pillar of family, faith, virtue and loyalty, and long may he be remembered as such.

We came to this channel in these early days because we know a bit of history and want a deeper understanding. It is everything I had hoped for. My walk to the shops in the rain this morning could not have been more inspirational. Thank you, Dr Starkey! But I fear that your wisdom will never fall upon the ears of those who most need to hear it.
I train young professionals with at least one university degree and none in the last 5 years has accurately told me the years of WW1 and WW2. There understanding of the events which shaped our nation is pitifully poor. Understanding the nature of Britain - and why we are different to other European nations- through an understanding of the events of our ancestors is everything that I could hope for from our history scholars. But I fear that this channel will simply preach to the choir and improve our singing. Our new, Iraqi born but privately educated in England, education minister needs to speak to Dr Starkey. He has made statements about modernising the curriculum being taught so that inclusivity is no longer tokenistic... deceptively vague as any politician tends to be... Dr Starkey, please get on the blower to Nadhim Zawahi!

The part on the King's overhaul of the honours system was deeply reminiscent of the NCF Lecture you gave in 2019. My favourite part of that lecture is how you portrayed the image of the first Labour cabinet under Ramsey MacDonald in 1924 stood outside Buckingham Palace to then being received by His Majesty.
The cabinet, an eclectic mix that included miners and other working-class folk whose origins and politics were light years from that of a King's, still were eager to show their respect, arriving court dress with all the fittings and fixtures which must have been alien to them. Meanwhile, the only person who didn't rock up - in a show of (in my opinion) disrespect - was of course the deeply middle-class Sidney Webb.
For me, this illustrated the deeply patriotic roots of the working-class in Britain.
So for King George to reach across the social ladder as he did, introducing a new order of chivalry to recognise the contributions of those in regular life, he helped to give a sense of touch with the monarchy and the honour it can bestow. And the best part is, is that it continues to this day to reward the service of people who serve their communities and the country at large, giving them a sense of pride and accomplishment which in centuries past would have perhaps never been recognised.
King George's actions, although likely born out of a degree of self-preservation, I'd argue were 2 fold in their effect. The first is that it obviously helped preserved the institution of monarchy, but secondly and most importantly, is that it opened the institution to the country, allowing that participation that had lacked for so long.
    An excellent video, Dr. Starkey.
Thank you for creating this channel, I have no doubt that it will evolve into an indubitably useful resource for all.

Some monarchs are great because they are warriors; some because they collect stamps. Ask why the mind becomes so intrigued by stamps? What does a stamp represent? What's on it -- a picture, colours, names, words. My imagination was always sparked by stamps, especially those from far away countries and people.

Mind blowing stuff ! This tale has been kept from me during my education and also by the media during my life. I am so grateful to you , sir, for filling in the gaps in my knowledge. Things I have always wondered about.Explains so much. Keep on in this fashion please. Fascinating insights.

I only knew George V for his torturous treatment of his children, which I'm sure contributed to the early death of George VI. Its interesting to discover the pivotal role he played in maintaining the RF in this country, and the wisdom and understanding he had.

Unbelievable, so now George V is responisble for the death of George VI too?? The ww2 took a toll on George VI, his father wasnt responsible for it

I am in my late 60s and at skool the latest period studied was 1789 - 1870. Any study more modern has either been motivated by my father's exploits in WW2 or my own desire to understand the building blocks of my own life. This period has been sadly neglected. Thanks, Prof. That was so enlightning. I'm hungry for more.

      and so on.

I've had a fun time watching these new videos on their first day of release. Long may they continue to be released! In fact, if Dr S produces one recording focusing on each of the British monarchs then I would be an avid follower, but I suspect he'll have a lot more to say on other (non-royal) topics. THANK YOU!

A consumate professional, an excellent historian with fantastic eye to detail, who performs his lectures in equally precise, entertaining, and enthusiastically thought provoking way. Exactly what the internet and TH-cam needs more of: informing people of historical truths and facts instead of woke identity political idealogues. Thanks Professor David Starkey! Keep up the fantastic work!
