The thing about the P300 is that it makes a lot of sense in countries with oppressive car taxes, like Ireland. The taxes are ludicrous as the engine power increases with the emissions. A new F-Type V8 here, the cheapest one, is €170,000! Even the P300 starts at €110K. But used, the P300 can be got for a price the average Joe could at least consider. A 2019 model can be had for €60K. Not cheap, but doable. In countries like this, or the Netherlands, or the Nordic countries with very high taxes on emissions, you're often left with cars like this as the only option unless you're wealthy. A bog standard, no optioned 911 costs €189K.

I have one of these. My reasons for going for the 4 cylinder version were:
It’s 50% more powerful then any other car I’ve owned. I don’t know how I’d get on with more power.
My wife uses it as well. I wouldn’t trust her with anything more powerful.
It was quite a lot cheaper than the V6 and much cheaper than the V8.
I think it’s one of the best looking cars available. Maybe there’s something wrong with my taste but I think that cars are getting uglier nowadays and I wanted to do something to fight back against that trend.

Happy owner of a 2020 P300 here in the states. Yes, I drove and loved the V8 before pulling the trigger on the 4 banger. So why did I do it? A couple of reasons. One is that I really care more about steering feel and cornering more than acceleration. The P300 has plenty of pace as a daily driver. Any more would put my license in danger. And when I really want to play, I'll take the motorcycle. Second, I'm mature (old) enough that the snarly burble of the 8 just seems obnoxious. All in all, I love the car. It has, to date, been flawless.

A quick comment regarding V6 versus V8, sure enough, they are all designed with two cylinder banks working in the same crank, but to design an optimized engine you have to consider the primary and secondary vibration as well as the power band of the cylinders. The V8 has quite an advantage here with almost perfect symmetry and overlapping power band, i.e. when cylinders act with overlapping power strokes, the optimum angle between the cylinders in a V8 is 90°. To counter the vibrations the V6 is better balanced with a 60° angle.
You could even that out and counterbalance that with balance shafts counterrotating and swinging weight but with added weight and complexity.

When I was looking at F Types a few four-cylinder ones did come up, but they seem pretty rare here in the States. You're right in that from a cost point of view they didn't offer any advantage over buying a one or two year older V6 especially as I ended up buying one with virtually no miles on it (and in all honesty I picked mine as it was the only one available in 1,000 miles in the lovely British Racing Green Metallic). I'm not sure if they offer and insurance or annual VED savings over a V6 back home?

I know an engineer that told me about the ‘kerb strike test’ hitting a metal lined 1 sq m at 50kM/h with the front wheel and the wheel alignment is supposed to be unaffected. Details such as XE having the same wading depth as a BMW SUV - they are basically massively over specified

Er, no; that is not how all six cylinder [V] engines are made. For a start, a V8 is almost always a 90˚ V - this being optimal for the timing of an 8 cylinder V. A V6 is, as Lancia first demonstrated in 1950 with their V6 first installed in the Aurelia, optimally a 60˚ V (Ford confirmed this when their new V6 appeared in the 90s). The anomalies generally come when a single crankcase design is adapted - possibly the most well known is the V6 in the Citroën SM - this was a Maserati V8 literally with two cylinders lopped off; the Douvrin PRV followed a similar route. In a reverse move, Ford took two V6 engines and mated them to produce a 60˚ V12 for Aston Martin.

The v6 126, was designed like that due to the vehicle having passed its crash tests easily with the v8. The blocks the same size so therefore missing having to pay for crash tests on the v6. 4 bangers do belong in sports cars. They DON'T belong in Grand Touring cars. The issue with the F-Type (former 550hp R owner here) is that the car tried to shoot the gap between GT and sports car.

      @r.mtn.7477 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Presumptuous semantics. In fact, the P300 F-Type behaves like a sports car because of its significantly lighter nose and model-specific suspension/steering tuning. As for it having "tried to shoot the gap...": In my opinion, it succeeded admirably, as I can attest from two years of ownership (2020 convertible) and the car's flawless performance. 295 lb.-ft. torque from 1500rpm is plenty of muscle for vigorous, everyday driving, especially if you're not obsessed with winning drag races or setting track records.

I will say, though, that the V8 is really way more than can legally be used on public roads. If you rev the engine out at all, you're well into triple digits in just a couple of shifts. On most roads, that engine is just loafing unless you're interested in putting yourself and others in danger or going to jail. From that perspective, I understand the case for the V6 versions. Much more useable on public roads.

Interesting review. But I do wonder sometimes if reviewers don’t get the sometimes limited personal finances of average buyers. Suppose, (like me) you just want a great looking, sporty car, which is as new as you can afford, and won’t cost you nigh on £800 a year in tax ( and rising), plus higher Insurance costs? Surely that comes into it aswell? Having the V8 or V6 version is great, but the reality is as time goes on those cars/engines are going to be taxed to death, and therefore not viable as an ownership proposition. Some of us aren’t full on petroleum heads, we just like a nice looking sporty car to enjoy being in and driving around. At 18 the noise of a V8 would have been important to me, at 70 it’s not! But I still like sporty looking cars, so please remember drivers like me when you’re reviewing.

While I agree with you and also wish mine was a manual, it's very hard to find them, and the manual was only available with the V6 for the short time it was available. Only 4% of F-Types were built with the manual transmission. The consolation prize is that, even if we are stuck with an automatic, it really is one of the best automatic transmissions available. The ZF-8 shifts very quickly for a single clutch transmission, so quick that it can be mistaken for a double clutch at times, and it's extremely smooth and seems to always know what you want from it. No laggy shifts, refusal to downshift or search for the right gear. It's always right on point.

I always ask myself, Between modern power levels and NVH, is a 4 cylinder really that bad? Keep in mind that exhaust isn't important to everyone, and it could easily be argued that for those that it is (myself included), the manufacturer is just playing off emotion to get you to pay more.
4 Cyl Turbos were fine in VW and Audi models 20 years ago (what i've spent the most time in) and have only gotten more powerful and more time has been spent on NVH.
Whenever the 'economical' debate comes up, "its cheaper to run", you're already spending at least 2-3x as much as you 'need' to spend on a car, you aren't saving much by getting a couple extra MPG.
I will accept the weight savings. Some of the BMW's are in a similar boat where the 4cyl turbo has better weight distribution and is lighter.

It's a sophisticated looking car for the era, and definitely purposeful looking, but it's no automotive baby doll. More a sort of four wheeled Sophia Loren.
The convertible Daytona, however, that one is breathtaking. Few cars have the same presence, though one that does is another drop top, in the form of the original Maserati Ghibli Spyder, which is a sublime work of art.
Indeed at this juncture, I'm wondering what a convertible Miura might have looked like if Lamborghini had been willing or able to produce one. But that might have been a tad frightening to drive!
I'm not put off by tapering tail ends anywhere near as much as James, but it's a look that does require some care in execution, and the malign effects of the SUV "steroid body bulges" trend that have hopped across to some sports cars do not merge well with a tapering tail. As for putting a coupé roofline on an SUV, that's just absurd.
If any designer wants to go for the tapering tail look, I'd suggest learning to do it right by looking at the Maserati Khamsin.

@Calilasseia The Khamsin is nice, indeed. I am more of a Jensen Interceptor guy myself. When I saw a Zagato Shooting Brake in the flesh it was very striking. I bet James is cringing at the thought of all these fastbacks and shooting brakes. Maybe we should lock him up in a room full of only these cars, and see if he grows to like them.

@@Spenny909 ... damn, I forgot about the Jensen Interceptor! 4 wheel drive and anti lock brakes 13 years before the Audi Quattro!

I think the E-type looks crap as well 🤣

      "Did he just say...?"
      "He did!"
      "What should we do?"
      "Off with his head!"
      "Off with our heads!"
From that moment, while chaos ensued and descended into the collapse of the very fabric of our society across the world, a chemical fire developed in the main server computer that stored the data of a comment section of a TH-cam channel. From a smouldering electrical fire turned into a raging fire that engulfed the frenzy and disintegrated everything that was related to mankind into nothing. All was gone. Thousands of years of a race was now a layer of ash. No trace of what intelligence, elegance, and art were accomplished by the beings.

I really like the F Type and would like to get a new V6 or V8.
But what’s putting me off is the constant bombardment of Land Rover vehicles being unreliable through surveys. Mixed with high insurance and in the top end for stolen vehicles.
Does the F Type fall into the same categories or are they bucking the trend for JLR vehicles.
Or should I spend my money on a V8 Lexus instead?
Would like your opinion as whatever I go for it’s going to be expensive.

In my experience of 4 Jaguars they've all been reliable and relatively inexpensive to run and maintain. Maybe I'm just lucky? Go for the Lexus if you can stand the looks.

The 4-cylinder version was not offered in the US and it’s interesting to hear about.

The 4 cylinder was very much available here in the US. It was discontinued for the final model year.

I didn’t know there was a four cylinder to be honest! I thought it was the V6 or a V8, and I always favoured the 6 because it was a bit more traditional (not an in-line I know), and it could have a manual.

Interesting review I was a little bit scared to watch it as I have a 2021 F Type P300 and I love it. But anyway I did watch it and it wasn’t bad it’s a shame you got an old one that had been messed with. That exhaust sounded awful. Mine sounds much better and it’s stock I know as Petrol Ped on his review says it doesn’t sound like a V6 or a V8 but then it wouldn’t would it.

Are there aftermarket modifications to make the P300 sounds good?

Why would the engineers allow the bean counters to just blank off two cylinders to get a v6 out of a v8 block, that is why Jaguar failed and is going to disappear to a Jaguar special edition model of a mundane model, like mini badging models as John Cooper..

I've always admired the F-Type for its looks. It hasn't dated and to those of us who like the old-school coupe recipe I don't think it ever will. But I struggle to gravitate to one due to the size, and weight, and auto box, and JLR reliability. For me a BMW Z4 Coupe (E86) seems a more shrewd move. Is that an unfair comparison?

The BMW is a shrewd move if you're looking for pity that you bought such an ugly car! The Jag beats it hands down, and mine has proved to be very reliable - just routine servicing (at a trusted independent), fuel and tyres so far in 6 years (bought used at one year). And ZF and Jaguar have done a brilliant job with the auto box - try one before you dismiss it out of hand.
