I have stitched probably more years than you ladies have been alive and I always did bobbinate but lately I love floss drops and floss bags for silks because they are super easy! I store them by the dmc color card columns in a photo storage set by Joann’s , I have columns one and two in a box and then through the dmc card until the end. I do keep whites and blacks and ecrus in their own as I have many skeins of each. My fancy floss etc is in stackable containers by color not brand which is easy for substituting colors and those containers also came from Joann’s . 🧵 I do sometimes make a box for a Mira like the enchanted mermaid, there was so much it was a lot to keep in a project bag so I have floss cards I put the key on and one length of the floss on it and the remainder in the box for future use . That worked well and I maybe am going to do that for my spring queen because I’m converting her to purples! There’s all my thoughts!😂

🧵 I had a master set on bobbins in boxes and now have switched to a wooden hanging set that fits all in one kallax box (same one as Stitchy Nikki 's video) and I think it's faster to cut floss for hanging than it is to bobbinate. I even used the drill hack to bobbinate. I love having a master hanging set, but I do also use floss cards to kit up projects and I just take a strand or 2 from my master set and I reuse the cards as I can. I can kit up so fast!! Kitting up with bobbins took more time and getting floss for stitching took more time. Over all I think bobbins are cheaper on set up but cost more in time and fuss. But that is just my 2 cents 😊😊
    Thanks for another great video!!

i love bobbins. I cut all my threads to 8 lengths then wind them on the bobbins. the spare working thread are looped into the hole like a floss drop. and wound the other way onto my bobbin and in boxes. I have a box per project... My spares are in a large sectioned box on bobbins... non bobbined threads are kept next to them as the box is big and I can take out sections 🧵

I used to have a box for each group of numbers.... I now am switching to floss drops. The floss drops that make use of the DMC numbers.

🧵 when I first started cross stitching 40 something years ago, all we had were bobbins, or at least that was all I knew about. Now that I'm starting over and I found cheap cardboard floss drops, I'm putting all my floss on them. It doesn't take me any longer to cut my floss than it used to take me to wind it on bobbins. I wrap my floss around a 12 inch ruler and cut it all at one time, and put it on the drop.

I do the same except cut them into 8 equal lengths then loop them through the bobbin hole.

I use Bobbins mostly-wanted to share this neat idea for winding bobbins. I made a piece that fits on my sewing machine (an adaptor) and I put the bobbin in the winder you can get at any hobby store. I push the pedal and hold the thread as it winds. Saves on my shoulder and is very quick💕

I have probably 20 of those boxes. I have a master set, and ones for multiple projects. I label mine by cutting off the number from the dmc label and then taping it on bobbin before winding. I am all about the bobbins. Spool.

Bobbins are the best. Only system I use and I’ve been cross stitching for over 35 years.

🚂I used bobbins exclusively when I first started stitching. I know combine bobbins and close drops depending on the project.

I use the Atom Heart after watching the Museum Stitcher. I got foam trays from Etsy that fit in sterilite containers. I use floss drops for my projects and take the floss off the bobbins. Love watching.

Great discussion. I’m a bobbinator from way back, and I still have some floss on cardboard bobbins. I’ll probably always have DMC on bobbins. Until recently, I only used DMC. Now that I’m starting to use overdyes, I put them in floss bags in alphabetical order on a ring. 🧵

I have a couple of friends who keep a damp paper towel in a plastic bag to run over the thread to get the kinks out and it really does work

  • @sleepycalico

Well, this is timely! I'm looking forward to seeing all of the modern systems so I can figure out what to switch to. My old plastic rings have become a snap, crackle, pop minefield whenever I rifle through them. Man down! I have to hunt for flying bits of plastic and make sure labels stay associated with the correct threads.
I never even heard of floss-away bags until just now. They look appealing to my personality. And I think this is a situation where I will have to accept some plastic-y elements, even though I try to stick with natural materials nowadays when I can.

I also write the floss number in the middle of the bobbin and put tape over it, because sometimes the marker wears off. I also use the hole in the bobbin to store the unused cut floss. I don't put the bobbins on a ring. Thanks for the video.

🧵 I keep my bobbins by color but am thinking I need to rethink that. It is hard to find the floss when I need it.

There's no right or wrong way to bobbinate. You bobbinate the way that works for you, LOL!!!! 🙂

Stream of consciousness thoughts on bobbins from a self-sworn bobbinator:
I would love to switch to the combo floss drop bobbins, and may eventually get them for fancy flosses, but for good ol DMC I want good plastic bobbins so I can have duplicates (Amazon has some good ones - the actual DMC are actually my least favorite basic plastic bobbins.
Some of the plastic bobbins the sharpie wants to smear on me so I switched to stickers kept on by way of a piece of tape, but if I had thought about it, I would only have done the stickers for the ones I needed to rebobbinate, and clip and tape on the number from the floss itself, but that is fussy too. Not as fussy as my next idea for upgrading them without upgrading to expensive bobbins but we’ll see if it works before I mention the details, lol!
I have one of the double sided boxes because my smaller boxes were bought 20 years apart and won’t stack correctly. Actually I think of my smallest oldest boxes 2 out of the 3 stack as it is, and it’s always annoyed me - so along with the big huge pack of bobbins from Amazon the double sided case was my “splurge” lol!

Do you think the double sided box was worth it? I have about 5 boxes but idk how many I’ll need for a master set and it might be easier to just get one big box instead of a ton of the smaller ones

    • @RedPandaHomebody
      @RedPandaHomebody 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@Allisonatthemoment I do - it’s sometimes annoying to have them on both sides and to keep flipping between them, but having it all in one box has been nice and makes them more portable for where you can work on them than multiple smaller ones. The one I have is the one that Chris XrossStitch recommended on a video a little while back (which reminds me to go add the video to the Flosstube Library later!)
If i didn’t need some level of portability, I would probably get a Sterilite 3 drawer (I think the wider one that will fit 12x12 paper) that you can buy inserts to fit

I’m a bobbinator but I know it’s unpopular these days. I use a master set and then kit my projects by cutting lengths and putting them on to thread cards in my project bag.

I want to move toward this same system. Was it hard to set up?

    • @sewmesarah
      @sewmesarah 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@Allisonatthemoment I didn’t find it hard to set up Alison and it’s a great way to stop duplicating thread purchases. My set up is very simple just us8n* the cardboard bobbins. I don’t even have a full set of dmc. I just bobbinate as I purchase any missing ones needed for a chart and my collection is gradually building. It also means I’m not purchasing colours I may never use just to fill out a set. Our Dmc here costs $1.30-2.00 per skein though, so that’s why I’m more intentional with my purchases. If I could buy it for 60c I might be more inclined to collect them all. 😉

I used bobbins for my first several projects, and they are easy and certainly store well. They unfortunately got very obnoxious for me when I did my first big colorful project and was constantly changing colors. I couldn’t stand cutting a new length anytime I needed just one strand for a patch of color. Every new strand cut felt like a side quest that I was now responsible for: re-wrapping, storing and reusing. It started feeling so wasteful to my brain to cut another 6 strand length and I totally started avoiding changing colors 🤷🏼

    Hi,
Sometimes, after stitching, we still have threads, not so short.
Do you conserve them or do you throw them in garbage ?
I you conserve them, where do you keep them ?
    Thanks

One of the advantages of bobbins is…because you don’t precut the threads, you can alter the lengths of threads for specific projects = cut them twice as long for loop starts or half as long for single thread/non loop starts. I use a wide variety of methods but still use bobbins for my dmc master set (just like I’ve used for 30 years😮😊) Looking forward to your next floss video - I really like the Atomic Heart bobbins…just wish they were slightly smaller to fit more of my boxes such as my double sided master set boxes. 😢 🧵❤
