    This is one of the best, if not the best, explanations I've viewed on the differences and similarities between the mental health professionals. I am a LPCC (Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor) in California. I especially appreciate the explanation r/t specific emphasis (counselors, social workers, therapists-masters' level) but not negating training in the non-emphasis or focus areas also). EDIT: One difference in California and my training is that my master's program was on the MFT track with two additional courses to qualify for LPCC licensure. California was behind all the other states in recognizing licensed counselors.) Also, California LMFT, LCSW, LPCC don't need a separate addictions treatment certification to work in the substance abuse field.

    This was a highly informative video. I arrived here at your video as recommended by my professor of Foundations of Clinical Mental Health in the counseling program at Barry University and I am glad I did. I took away a lot especially the diplomate certification which I am adding as a career goal within this field. Thank you!

    Fantastic video, Doctor Norton! The most comprehensive, informative, and thus useful source of information on mental health counseling that I have found so far. Thank you for the time and effort put into it.

    Very informative. THANK YOU! I am in California and will begin a MS Counseling program (MFT/LPCC) program here in August 2021. Your lecture has left me motivated and excited to start my program! I am interested in the portability of my license (once I obtain) as I have family in Florida, New York, and Jamaica. I have a dream of being bi-coastal where I spend time in Jamaica and in the US and would love to use my Counseling skills in both countries. Most videos on TH-cam discourage the LPCC route and promote MCSW programs so thank you for this overview!

      As a offspring of 2 Jamaican parents, mental health counseling is needed in Jamaica more than ever. I am also an aspiring mental health counselor. The more up and coming counselors the better. Blessings to you on your journey.

      How did you find out about the requirements to be counselor in Jamaica? Once licensed, I would love to have clients in Jamaica I can have on a telehealth platform from the US.

    Can you do more videos about different topics in mental health counseling and how to get license as LPCC. What are the requirements and how to get in as intern etc

      Hi, Jisa. The licensure process is different in every state. If you can let me know what state you're interested in, I can try and point you in the right direction.

    Just seems like the counseling route provides more broader opportunities in the field. Masters level licensure, many certifications and specialities, and they do what psychologists do. Are counselors frowned upon by psychologists ? As a way to keep the profession down.

    • @AaronNorton
      @AaronNorton  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi, Nate. I assume that some psychologists do look down on counselors and have seen some examples of this in my past 20 years in the field. Having said that, I don't think that most of them look down on us. My friends who are psychologists seem more interested in who provides quality services on an individual basis, viewing all the mental heath professions as allies and colleagues working together. Most psychologists I know seem to realize that they generally get more training on research, diagnosis, and testing than counselors and that counselors generally get more training on counseling and psychotherapy than them but that an individual practitioner in either profession can do anything that a practitioner in the other profession can do so long as they have appropriate training, education, experience, and competency to do so on a case-by-case basis. Is this helpful?

    I’ll be graduating in 3 weeks what can I do to acquire my license for mental health therapist

    • @AaronNorton
      @AaronNorton  ปีที่แล้ว

      If you visit floridasmentalhealthprofessions.gov/ and click on "licensing" and then click the plus sign next to the registered intern category that matches your profession (i.e., mental health counseling vs. social worker vs. marriage and family therapy), you can read about the requirements for registering as well as submit an electronic application. You'll need to identify a qualified supervisor first. If you don't have one and nee more info about that, feel free to email. me at me@anorton.com and I can offer additional info.

    I am graduating in 6 weeks for my BA in Behavioral Science with a specialization in Substance Abuse and Chemical Dependency. I am looking forward to becoming a CAP in the state of Florida. Do I complete my supervise internship before the exam or after the exam. Also, how many hrs of supervise experience do I need for tier three in substance abuse counselor ?

    • @AaronNorton

      Hello, Ngo. It sounds like you are asking about how to become a Certified Addictions Professional in Florida, not how to become a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Florida. they are two different credentials (though some people have both). This video, however, is about how to become a LMHC in Florida, not a CAP. I would recommend that you review the information on the Florida Certification Board's website on how to become a CAP at flcertificationboard.org/certifications/certified-addiction-professional/. For the CAP, I believe you will need to complete your addiction supervision hours before you take the written exam for the CAP credential, and there is no internship requirement for the CAP credential, but the FCB can confirm my understanding if you reach out to them. If you have questions after reviewing that information, please feel free to email me at me@anorton.com.

      @Aaron Norton thank you so much for answering my question. I am looking at the website now. Trying to figure it out. I tend to overthink. I appreciate you taking your time to respond to me. Thanks for extending the hand as well.
