My father was senior to Rashid at Bishops High School in Pune and they both probably had their Principal in Artie Lunn. At the same time,Rashid's father Rustomji Byramji went into partnership with my grandfather in the buffalo dairy farming business. Unfortunately, foot and mouth disease caused substantial losses. My association with Rashid's horse's began when I played Commanche (Valoroso - Centime by deux peur cent) at 25/1 to beat the great Red Cockade in the Bangalore Derby. I played that bet with the late bookmaker Beg or Baig in those days. The Satinello - Dusty Colt Red Cockade was ridden by the racing brigand Richard Alford, while Jagdish was astride Commanche that day. After that it was betting on most of Rashid's horses that always brought in profits. Alamanac (Brianstan -Clocked) Squanderer (Valoroso - Milky Way) Evernsky (Everyday II - Not a Wink), Manitou (Grey Gaston - Dusty Martha) got him while ridden by Bhosle at 10/1 against Chandrashekaran trained odds on favorite,Regal Prince John Smith astride. There were many more from the Byramji stables that bring back fond memories. Lets hope young Darius gets better horses in the days to come,so that he too can achieve great heights like his father did.
