    Thank you very much for your review which I enjoyed! One question: as the board has no coordinates, does it matter on which side of the board you place the white and black pieces? Or does the app always expect you to have the control buttons e.g., to the right (or left) of the white pieces? Theoretically it should not bother as long as the bottom right square is white...

    • @chessnoob64
      @chessnoob64  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Great question. When using the Chessnut App (which is needed for connection to chess.com), the App expects that the controls will on the a-file side (the left side if you are playing with the White pieces).
      This is just something to know.
      Some of the third-party apps will auto-adjust depending on the starting positions of the pieces (and so it doesn't matter which side you place the pieces), but this isn't a feature in Chessnut's own app.

    First off thanks for this video, seeing and comparing the air and pro board and pieces in hand is exactly what I was curious about! Great review and I LOVE your shirt btw :) I'd LOVE the Pro but I think I will start with the air for now - I just want them all!

      Thank for the positive comments!
      The PRO is fantastic, but the Air is undoubtedly better value at less than half the price. Absolutely nothing compares to the Air at its price point!

    In terms of the quality of the pieces, Chessnut does sell a chip set. So you could take a high quality wooden set and (Gasp!) drill holes in the bottom of the pieces, inset the appropriate chip in each, and end up with a new set that the board can identify.

    • @chessnoob64
      @chessnoob64  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, that's right. I intend on buying a set of the chips and installing them into my own chessmen. Most chessmen would probably already have an appropriate hole drilled out for the weights, so it would be a matter of taking off the felt, removing the glue and some of the weights, installing the chip and then re-felting.

    I received my Go, and I enjoy using it in coffee stores, library. So, I ordered an Air today, not the Air+ because the wood pieces came with the set is not meeting my standard. For the Pro, at that price range, u can get a DGT e-board and a decent set of pieces! And I am going to keep using my DGT board, FIDE e-pieces with DGT Pi running Picochess 3.3 Lite (there are 60+ built-in engines).

    Third party app support is so important. One of the fears with such devices is that the main app will stop getting updated if something happens to the company.

    I love what I see, but the size is exactly why I bought a Chessnut air to play on my desk. My DGT board was simply to cumbersome.

    • @chessnoob64
      @chessnoob64  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep. As per my Practical Considerations/Pros/Cons/Who is this For? section, this is a big board. Basically, a tournament size board - it deserves respect and commitment.
      I absolutely agree that the Chessnut Air, which is sized as an "analysis board", might be a better fit for many people. Pricewise, the Air is very difficult to beat at around USD$180. It's simply a superb device, but like the PRO, the experience is somewhat marred by a few engineering shortcomings, especially with the software.

      This is one of the reasons that I think that the Square Off Pro is a bit of a non-starter with its soft/roll up board. Imagine trying to rotate that with a random match up! If you need to place it on a rigid surface that can be turned around like a board, it might has well have just come with a rigid board.

    • @chessnoob64
      @chessnoob64  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, the access to the Chessnut Air is through the top playing surface. It seems that with the PRO, it would be a matter of removing the bottom panel which are held in place by screws.

      The pieces are "fine", but certainly could be better. I'm hoping that Chessnut might release different grade pieces over time for the PRO that can be chosen at the point of sale. I do agree that QC should be better on a product at this price point.

    I wish to get a board to play games mainly over the board (player against player) with recording PGN (and also online of course) and then analyzing the games. It seems that this board is not well adaped for this purpose. I noticed you suggest the DGT board but this board needs to be connected with a computer and I can only connect the board with à mobile phone through bluetooth. So the DGT doesnt seems appropriated. It why I am looking towards the iChessOne (to be available in november). What do you think about this board ? Thanks you so much for your very interesting videos. By the way I appreciate also very much your style, kindness and your voice... ! 🤗

    • @chessnoob64

      The Chessnut Air and PRO can be used to record OTB games, but if you're only going to connect via a phone, I recommend using third party software rather than the Chessnut App. For instance Chess PGN Master on Android. That's how I recorded the game here: th-cam.com/video/B4H4LZq6l1g/w-d-xo.html
      As for iChessOne, I have no opinion as it hasn't been released yet.

      @@gerarddelaxou9762 That clock function looks very nice.
      However, to be honest, I don't see any particular advantage of the eChessOne over the Chessnut Air/PRO for offline over-the-board play based on that video.
      Fundamentally, it comes down to the app. As eChessOne is far from release, the state of the app at launch is unknown. It might be excellent, or it could be rudimentary. On katzenpapa's video, there seemed like significant limitations with the app at the time of the beta testing (e.g., unable to download PGNs). Chessnut Air/PRO does have the advantage of third party app support, and this works very well. The Chessnut App works "fine", but you're not limited to the Chessnut building features. If eChessOne supports the same third party Android apps, then there will effectively be almost feature parity.
      The Chessnut Air/PRO can record games into internal memory without needing it to be connected to any app, and this may have some advantages in travel situations, but it might be a relatively niche use case.
      I'm not sure I like the need an external power supply/battery to be plugged in. That's a pretty big compromise on the design/aesthetics. I'm not sure the foldability is an important enough feature (for me) to make that worthwhile. However, without having it in hand, it's hard to know how big (or little) an issue it is.
      The other thing to consider is that the Air/PRO is available now while there'll be a wait for the other device.

    • @gerarddelaxou9762

      @@chessnoob64 Thanks very much for your advices🙂
      In fact I first red only the first part of your response as I forgot to click on the PLUS button ! Sorry. Now thanks to your commentaries I realize all he advantages of the Chesnut Pro 🙂 It is available, it works as you testify 👍, has third party support, can store the games in internal memory, and doesnt need battery to be plugged.
      The app Chess PGN Master says "Only available for Chessnut e-boards. Use this button to transfer OTB games stored on the device. The games are removed from the e-board after the transfer is complete./ Note / Make sure you don’t make illegal moves in OTB games. If you make an illegal move, all moves made after that move are discarded."
      So the only point to look at is not make illegal moves. In this case it is necessary to use a computer to correct the PGN if I have well understood.
      Moreover I wonder if I go back one move during the game if this will affect the PGN and if this one will be lost ? Thanks again for all your advices 😀
      At the end I also wonder wether if it is possible to switch off completely the leds when playing OTB. Just record the games.

      I didn't purchase the Chessnut PRO - Chessnut sent me a unit to review so I don't quite have equivalent dates.
      Effectively, I put in an "order" through correspondence when the PRO was in the initial pre-order (i.e., they weren't ready for shipment yet). That was on 20 Feb 2023.
      I received the device delivered on 16 Apr 2023, but I'm not sure when it had actually shipped.
      As I live in Sydney Australia, shipment would have been directly from China, and typically items take 1-2 weeks after shipping. When I previously bought my Chessnut Air, it took 10 days.
      If you're in North America, it's possible that shipping may be from Chessnut's North American warehouse.

    • @chessnoob64
      @chessnoob64  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      For the most part, yes. The board is quite sensitive so with sliding pieces, it may place the piece on the first legally detected square. The newer versions of the app allows you to set a delay, however, which mostly mitigates this issue.

    How could this be worth 400 dollars over the smaller board?

    • @chessnoob64
      @chessnoob64  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In the same way that the existence of small travel chess boards that cost $20 and completely free chess apps can co-exist with $1000+ chess sets, the Chessnut Air and PRO are meaningfully separate products. I have both.
      I describe in the video who I think the PRO is for, and it definitely isn't for everybody. Is it good value? It depends on what you value, but I would agree that most people who are only casually interested in chess probably should not buy the PRO. The Air IS very well priced and a fantastic product. However, it is a small analysis sized board and this gives a very different experience to playing on a full tournament sized board.

    Hello, can you explain why this chessnut pro is not good for blitz?

    • @chessnoob64
      @chessnoob64  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Because by definition, blitz is a time control with 5 min or less for each side. As you'll need to make the opponent's move on the board as well, this will result in a significant disadvantage on average.
      The question is the following:
      Do you regularly lose due to flagging in blitz? If so, then you'll be further disadvantaged on a physical board like the Chessnut Air/PRO.

      No electronic chess boards are good for blitz against an online opponent. If the primary goal is the play blitz, the best way is to play it online is on a computer with a screen and mouse, or OTB against a live opponent.

      @chessnoob64 At the end of your review you said the Chessnut Pro is possible the best products in its class, however you have not specified what this class is, so any potential buyer might not be aware of the competition. I would say there is currently no other product on the market yet. DGT boards are better quality, but are more expensive and don't have built in leds, Millennium tournament board is also more expensive but again better quality and reputation. Certabo boards again pricier but possibly better. Paying 600 or 1000 USD at this point for a product to be used for many years to come is not thar much of a difference, especially that as you said the target market are chess enthusiasts. Ichessone is not yet on the market so it is hard to say anything about the quality although initial reviews of the prototype are promising and it is significantly cheaper than the Pro.

    • @chessnoob64
      @chessnoob64  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@sephiroth6956 - the class are boards designed for playing other players online. For DGT, the only board really designed for this purpose (and hence, "class") is the DGT Pegasus, which is definitely not "better quality". It is a plastic board, with plastic pieces, with significant software problems in terms of online play. The DGT Pegasus also doesn't have individual piece recognition, but uses a simple inductive detection for a piece, similar to the DGT Centaur.
      Certabo boards are definitely interesting, but it's extremely difficult to find much information about them. Certainly they are expensive, once you factor in the board and chessmen set.
      IChessOne is not released yet. It isn't meaningful to talk about it as a comparison as reviews of prototypes and engineering samples have limited bearing to the final retail model. There are half a dozen other similar boards from other manufacturers which have yet to be released.
      Square Off has a number of boards. They have the advantage of self moving pieces, but, there seem to be fairly major software integration issues. Furthermore, the Square Off Neo/Swap has largely not shipped with the delivery date being delayed for around two years by this point.

      @chessnoob64  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I own both. I would say that the Chessnut PRO is definitely good. The PRO and EVO are different products.
      The EVO is great if want or need the extra features such as on-board training, using it for puzzles on chess.com and Lichess, etc. However, the size of the board and pieces are that of an analysis board. It is relatively smaller and with a modern aesthetic design.
      The PRO is a full competition sized board with a traditional wooden design. Where the EVO makes use of the technological enhancements with coloured light up squares and the screen, the PRO is designed principally for online games of chess using a traditionally-looking tournament-sized board. The technology is in the background rather than the forefront.
      For my needs, I personally prefer to play with the PRO as that is my principle use case. For others, the EVO may be a better choice. And for others, the Air might be better still. Choice is good!
