  • Can a pile of scrap Ford OHC Pinto parts provide what is needed to build up a running engine for minimum cost?
I have uses for a running engine however I quite fancy the challenge of a budget build.... How cheap can we go?

You have a great advantage over there, our parts are really had to find in Alabama , great build sir!

Where can I get all the part numbers just to understand the difference between 2 spare parts?

    1600 head all the way

i thought the gt head had 2.0 inlet valve and camshaft

What fuel do you plan on running this engine on? Higher octane will be required with the 1600 head, ignition timing will also be more critical. I would go with the 2,0 head cheaper fuel cost, easier timing set up and the bigger Exhaust valve will flow better.

Thanks for commenting.... Firstly, this build is just for a bit of fun, the challenge being to build up a running engine from scrap parts left over from years of building these engines, ideally I hoped to build one up for the price of a gasket set, however some parts had suffered in my rather soggy garage meaning I will be adding some new parts, some left over from years back and others bought cheap. Regardless of build type I never bolt a standard head back on, there will be port work done. The 1600 head is a cheap way to up the compression and make any port work work better, I guess I dropped lucky as the head is GT spec sharing the same valve size as the 2 litre, so the exhaust port is no more restrictive. As for fuel..... it will be 100 octane leaded, as in 100LL AVGAS . Maybe someone with an engine dyno might test it for me.... just for a laugh 🤔🤣

Is that fuel readily available, and what type of car will you be installing this in?

@@kevinconklin2346 The fuel is available from a local airfield, as for what car.... it isn't, as I said its just for a bit of fun, it can be run up at the workshop and it will be used for a few videos on setting carbs and ignition timing .... also will try the Chinese made Weber copy of the DGV and DGS carbs. Got another engine coming to the workshop next month which might prove a distraction 🤔 🤣

It really depends how much power you think it might make, how much cam you can give it, what carb / carbs will be used, and how much machining you can do. If everything is near standard, I think the stock 2.0 head will work best. I don't think it would cope with the extra compression on 95 Ron. I think you will end up pulling so much timing to stop it pinking, it will end up making less power. But if you can do some machining and porting, the 1.6 head is a better starting point. If your running it on funny fuel, the 1600 all the way.
Edit to add I like the e max head on a sub 180 hp engine. With carefull port work they seemed to make a good chunk more midrange.

@@iainball2023 This build was basically can we make a running engine from my 'scrap pile' of Pinto parts left over from many years of involvement with the Pinto, at first it was hoped for the price of a gasket set.... However, had the build been all 2 litre the head would of had some port work, I have never bolted a standard head back on. The 1600 head came about due to wanting a higher compression ratio, the head is the GT spec with the better exhaust valve (I still need 4 exhaust valves) As for fuel..... due to the budget build nature there was to be no machine work, so no fitting of hardened valve seats, and from the start the fuel of choice is 100 octane leaded , commonly know as AVGAS 100LL. Pintos love leaded fuel, also this build is just for fun..... and to pass a little time before I have a big distraction in the workshop.... Going back to the 1600 head, it will be getting some port work etc but..... the engine will be made up of standard parts.... I don't expect huge power as the cylinder bores are worn, it's a scrap build but if someone is willing to run it up on a dyno I would be up for it. As for the Emax head, I agree with mid range power, the standard port was never ideal but the Emax design probably gives it more velocity through the port in the mid range. Just as a side note the first engine start up at the start of these videos is a 1600 made up from standard parts.
