  • Review and use case - Nikon Z9 and the AF-S 300 mm F/2.8 VR II
Is a lens being released in 2009 for digital DSLR still an option for the mirrorless Z-mount high-resolution and high-speed camera age ? Is it any good for video which becomes more and more relevant for a community that tends to do both photography and videography ? I could hardly find any reviews on this lens-camera combination - so we thought we should give it a try.

The video shows migrating birds at the Tiste wetlands before and during sunrise. These wetlands are a hotspot for migrating birds moving south in the autumn. Cranes and various geese stay here for their trips. Thousands of white fronted geese and Canada geese appear. The action starts 45 min before sunrise and requires large numerical apertures or high ISO values to capture action.
Verdict: A really good lens in particular since I am not a believer in 2.0 times TC’s anyhow. Hence, the loss of performance at 600 mm does not bother me and I would not use this lens beyond 500 mm under regular conditions. At 300 mm and 420 mm I find it outstanding with a high light gathering power. So high shutter speeds in low light is the strength of this lens. If you want to photograph animals in context of their interaction and their landscape 300 and 420 mm is an excellent option for the Nikon Z9. If you like good bokeh, this lens might be interesting to you. It is not a lens for portraits of small animals or longer handheld video. If you get it used in good condition it has clearly also a good price to value.
