    Great video John! Loved the images and looked like a great area you and James were in, beautiful. Congrats on the new 500mm lens. Want to see some images from that beast!

      Thank you Bill!!!🙏 I still have to find the sweet spot for the focus and aperture setting with the 500.... and it heavy! The 300 is AMAZING. No matter where I set it, the I get about a 98% focus rate. The images are spot on even super cropped. In. This coming weekend, back out with the 500. how many shots do you need anyway?? Thank you Bill - this amazing place is two minutes from my home and I did not know it was there until about three weeks ago........ 😁💖

      Thank you Adrian!!! 🙏 I just got the 500mm and have to find the right settings between focus, metering and aperture - it is NOT forgiving and shows all the flaws in my technique, but when it hits it is AMAZING. The OLD - I mean old and all glass 300mm f2.8 is always - always spot on and I can crop in as much as I want and it is still crystal clear. The focus is fast and you feel the torque - it is AWESOME. The Tamron is not bad either and I was happy with it for a long time. The light does have to be just right though. Maybe it is my technique as well as there are many away winning wildlife photographers that have used that lens. But this area is two minutes from my house and I did not know it was there until about 3 weeks ago. Gonna go again and again. Thank you Adrian. 💖😁

      @@joaomiranda9639 Hi João Miranda
      ! I watch the meter that shows in the view finder, using either the shutter speed or aperture to keep it about center. I use spot or center weighted metering most of the time and either single point or group of 9 for focus. Seems to work most of the time. I like a high shutter speed for birds in flight or moving in water. I hope this helps. 😁

    That 500mm is beautiful! I was thinking in getting the 400mm 2.8 and a 2x tc , I think the ISO performance of the d850 (and hopefully the upcoming d900) will be a nice match for the lens 😌

    • @JonnyPink65
      @JonnyPink65  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      KanonMadness, thank you! 🙏 I have to say, that my old 300mm f2.8 is one my fastest and sharpest lenses. The 400 2.8 is probably the same. The 500 f4 is awesome but honestly a little slower to focus - more like any other sports lens with a long reach. The images with the D850 and D780 are amazing. I was hoping for the Z9, but if they are going to put out another DSLR, that is where I will go - I love what they can do. Thank you KanonMadness!! 💖🤗

    • @tomallen6073
      @tomallen6073 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don’t think you’ll see a replacement for the D500, with Nikons financial problems I would say all their R&D funds will probably go towards mirrorless development. I own a D500 myself. Fantastic camera, but I think it’s the end of the line. Hope I’m wrong.

      Hi John, i've just made a mobile camo blind using golfing Umbrella, 2 section poles (adjustable Ht) and ground spike, plus a side panel all around (zip entrance and couple of windows).It's like a cross between a bag hide and static hide.
      All best, from Scotland.

      @@silentrabbit247 Silent Rabbit!!!! That is awesome. Most of the places around here are usually crowded with other photographers, walker, runners, picnickers, mountain bikers .... and homeless. That is one thing I wish we had here - a little solitude. I would LOVE to make a blind like that and set up something for birding. 🤗💖

    Nice video. Many call the Nikon 300 f2.8 one the worlds best. Any downsides other than less reach or larger lenses? Thanks.

    • @JonnyPink65
      @JonnyPink65  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you!!! This old lens is super sharp. Mine has no VR and all glass and metal - it is heavy!! It focuses fast and you can feel the torque of the glass when it snaps to focus. Downside, at least for me, is that it would not work on the Z9 after the last firmware update I did. I also no longer have the Z9. The downside to a 300mm is that for most wildlife, it is just not enough reach. And with older Nikons, finding the correct extender that will actually work with that particular lens was always a challenge - and it does cut down on clarity. If I were still shooting Nikon, I would use either the 200-500 or the new Z lens. This is one lens I will not part with and will stay with my D800!! 🙏🤗💖

    is it Sharpe wide open?

    • @JonnyPink65
      @JonnyPink65  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Sean! Well, this is a special lens. It is sharp no matter what I have the aperture at. I gauge what I want to shoot at based on how much deep I want my focal plain to be - and it is just a guess. At a higher shutter speed and using auto ISO for birds IN FLIGHT, I try to keep the ISO a low as I can to keep the noise down while letting in as much light. however, most lenses with have a point where they are sharpest - and it is usually not wide open. This OLD 300mm F2.8 is just an rare anomaly but I usually use it at F4. My 500mm F4 is best a at about f5.6. 😁

      No worries Erik. This was at the height of the pandemic and the mask was required EVERYWHERE. What you can not see is the large amount of people out there. We here were fortunate enough to still be able to go outside. I still wear a mast on many occasions. I also think if you are focusing on the masks, you are missing the everything else. 😁

      It is a good lens, though. 👍
