@@liamneedsauniquehandle production can mean a Lot of things, from giving ideas and commentary to bringing in other musicians and gear, to rearranging the studio space, basically kind of directing a movie. Mixing is, strictly, adjusting the levels of various channels in the recording, but that's also partially under the umbrella of production. Rick Rubin, for example, is a legendary producer who's worked with dozens of top level acts for decades, and he basically shows up, scratches his beard, and says "hey maybe put a trumpet there? Also, play more raw" and then goes home.
His standout worst is "Pretend Your Morals Are The Best". It's abysmally empty, awkward, and the lyrics are most atrocious. Even by his standards [especially with context haha]. If I were forced to pick an aspect to compliment, it would be the piano in the back, but...he messed up a note!

Dance Monkey: I like the lyrics. To me, they read as someone feeling forced or pressured to perform, turning something the enjoy doing into an obligation because people think it's "inspiring" or whatever. They've lost their enjoyment, so they feel like a dancing monkey, existing as a novelty for other people to oggle at instead of performing for the fun of it. Vocals are annoying as fuck though, I get why people hate it.
So here’s the thing: dance monkey is a song that I personally connected with. As someone who struggles with social anxiety, I most certainly did feel like a dance monkey for my family during social gatherings. “Smile, communicate and don’t be so adversarial!” they would say. I would constantly think “I’d rather be in my room listening to music and reading books. I’m putting on a show for people that I only see once or twice a year.” Also after hearing the backstory of tones and I, idk I was really rooting for this girl.
I feel like the heart part 6 being not only a victim blaming song but trying to victim blame someone off a misinterpretation is not talked about enough in the dot drake drama and I’m SO GLAD YOU CAUGHT THAT THANK YOU
I think a good contender it would be the entire album Playdough cooked in tea by Me&Me, album made as a PARODY, A VERY BAD AND UNFUNNY PARODY of A crow looked at me, you know, the album made by Phil Elvrum as a coping mechanism of the dead of his wife...yeah...
Bruh I came here and immediately made a joke comment, but tbh I'm kinda impressed at the quality of this video so far, I feel like it would be kind of silly of me not to address that, good job!
I personally think that they are boring and really really boring and also just really boring. But objectively they are not bad. Just extremely generic and heavily in the butt rock genre
Great video! I really like your thoughtful approach to the subject of children making music, and abuse victims. That’s something that is really important that is often completely lost when people start dunking on bad media in general on the internet. Instant subscribe!
The most surprising thing about Blood On The Dance Floor is how many albums they made, they were pumping out albums every year between the late 2000s/early 2010s. Like my god why can’t the actually good bands make that many albums?
"Like my god why can't the actually good bands make that many albums?" Let me introduce you to a little known band from Melbourne called King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard
Idk I don't think that nickelback is bad at all. It's bizarre. Every person I know doesn't mind nickelback's music, but then when I look on the internet everyone hates them. I almost feel like many (not all!) people on the internet say that they hate nickelback because it's the popular opinion to have. I have a feeling that it's a legitimate psychological phenomenon haha
It is in fact. Comedian Brian Posehn said Nickelback sucks as a bit on a comedy panel on live TV at the height of their popularity. He was being facetious, but it gained traction online, and combined with their popularity making their music ubiquitous and hard to get away from, the narrative was formed
I mean they're not BAD bad, but they're pretty bad. For an entertaining take, check out the Pat Finnerty (What makes This song Stink) review here on the You Tube
Personally, I think Nickelback are more boring than outright bad. And that may be a bigger crime on the internet than being bad. At least bad music has the 'it's so bad it's now good' and general comedy appeal to it. They become funny memes. While Nickelback hate is a meme, it's not a particularly funny one. Also, they are hated simply from overexposure and oversaturation. They were played endlessly on radio and TV in their heyday, and people just grew tired of that. But they weren't offering anything interesting either, so people don't look back and think of them as being misunderstood like other artists that may have been hated due to similar oversaturation.
Their lawyers got the pickleback parody taken down because more people followed it on Facebook than Nickelback. Ever since then I've been salty online. Ok songs though, a little overplayed in their day, but it's been a long time to hold onto that.
Jesus Christ, I was not ready for the ending. I had no idea the context behind the Jessi Slaughter video when it was popular and it's been a part of my lexicon ever since. I feel dirty for having regarded her with so much disdain and mocking her like we did. BOTD are straight up evil.
Oh my god the last song you talked about was horrifying it scarred me ,I’m glad you brought my awareness to that artist so I can avoid absolutely everything associated with that individual
I feel like your chart misses one of the most important categories: unmusical (and not on purpose). Music that has shitty rhythm, atrocious and off key vocals, very noticeable song-ruining mistakes, and just poor musicianship overall. Damnit I just described punk rock, one of my favorite genres.
Nah i disagree Every song i’ve heard like that (which really isnt common cause that kind of music rarely gets posted/popular) has a charm The shaggs is the most famous example. I cant hate on the music cause it’s charming and cute enough to appreciate beyond the actual listening experience
LOL at this comment because i agreed AND i also love punk. But the thing is, great punk still has to be on point enough, it's mainly about attitude and passion being valued over technicality. Best punk bands can actually play, even very impressively and that only shows you practice enough and care about your music. A band that puts very little effort in their performance won't achieve much. It's just that you don't NEED to be a virtuoso. If you have something to say, confidence/charisma, and you're having fun, it will connect with people.
Originally watching Rebecca Black's Friday, I was obsessed with the spectacle. But now I legitimately like it and kind of use it for the occasional friday joke (at work no less). But like also 'Thanksgiving' by Nicole Westbrook has also become perennial for me. I think there is something to do with bad songs if you can learn to appreciate them. If you're not familiar with Melt Banana or Nurse with Wound for an example of intentionally bad/non-melodic. I really liked your presentation of this.
I feel like the reason why most of these people make bad music is because they don’t listen to music. Most big artists and even underground artists have their inspirations. Like people like JoJo siwa and demon dice use music to get across a message, but forget that music’s main appeal is the sound. Playboi carti repeats a lot of his lyrics, but I’d be lying if I said it didn’t sound good🤷🏿♂️. Demon dice can be upset that mumble rap is popular, but every musician in the main stream artist does their homework and know music.
I mean, I don't think Demon Dice doesn't listen to music or forgets it needs to be good, I think they just genuinely think that their music is good (or did, anyway, I have no idea what she thinks about her old stuff now, but I kind of assume she hates it as cringey old work now).
I think is she had some one to help her with lyrical work earlier on, it wouldn't be as bad, she can obviously rap phonetically. as we know now she can sing all multiple genres, and i think moving to japan and working wity a multitude of producers has let her move the craft forward and not be cringe 24?7
As someone who has made some bad music over the years, and is fascinated by and drawn to bad art, your appreciation for it is refreshing. Thank you for making this video.
Id say revolution 9 is a really important one for experimental music, specifically sound collages, as id say its the first instance of a sound collage being really mainstream
if You Done Goofed is the worst song of all time then Piggyback by Melanie Martinez has to be a close second as it's the exact same situation except Melanie actually got away with everything and is hugely successful to this day
I do feel the need to say that the Radke point got misrepresented. He didn’t murderer a dude and neither went to prison for it, he was present at a gathering where a guy got stabbed. When the cops showed up, he was arrested for possession of a dangerous object cuz he had brass knuckles on him and got 5 years of probation. He wasn’t involved in the fight and was never charged with murder. The only reason why he actually went to prison in the end is cuz he was arrested 3 years later for DUI wich was a probation violation. That’s why he served the last 2 remaining years of his sentence.
Kinda embarrassing how much I had to scroll to find this. Not really sure how Game Over is a "cringe" song either. There is nothing objectively bad about it. I can understand why someone might find Ronnie's mixtape cringe, but why throw shade at a song like Game Over, which is a song that basically tells the listener to get off their ass and do something about their problems instead of sulking about and being a bitch about them?
For me a big part of what makes bad music is unoriginality and greed. I mean songs that are just put out with a basic beat, some good looking singer and copy paste lyrics just to throw it into the masses so it generates money. This makes a lot of songs that aren't musically or lyrically 'bad' unenjoyable to me. Radio music tends to be exactly like that hence I dont listen to radio
revolution 9 isn’t a song, but an audio collage made to mimic the “sounds of a revolution.” It’s more of a piece of audio performance art than a song, so I don’t think it belongs here.
There's good and bad music, but I think the worst kind is boring music. I get so frustrated when I'm left with nothing to say after listening a song, because it didn't catch my attention and left me blank staring the wall
So I actually like Dance Monkey, but that's in part because I worked as a cashier at a grocery store and all I really wanted was a pulsing beat to scan to. It's kinda like edm with a piano instead of bass, which gives it an advantage on crappier sound systems that usually cut off the deeper bass. Especially good, the timbre of the voice is unusual enough (and possibly pitched perfectly) that it really catches the ear so in a loud environment I don't have to strain to hear any part of it. The song also tells an interesting enough story to catch my attention. For me to fully enjoy a song, it needs to be essentially an essay poem or it needs to pretty explicitly tell a story. The implied exploitative relationship between artist and consumer is more unique than average. I appreciate that in a song
i thought this would be a video about some choices music makers do that could make music sound bad and as a starting musician it was interesting for me ahah turns out it's more about cultural context /neutral
man, I always feel bad for DemonDice, not only cuz I do like her streams and I think she is a very nice person for what it seems, but the hate she receives feels so disproportionate, even if I do think she makes really bad music (although I like a couple of her songs in her vtuber persona, damn, I would even call some of them good)
Tbh, there are some bands that formed to sound awful but go hard like Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, DNA, the Germs, Sonic Youth (81-84) and Whitehouse. Much easier of a listen than any planted pop/mumble/reggaeton act
Nah Teenage Jesus and DNA didn’t form to sound bad. They were deliberately incredibly dissonant and loud, definitely a precursor to noise but teenage Jesus and the jerks used to practice constantly, they worked out how to make a lot of noise sound fantastic.
Just saw the intro so far and i'm so stoked! Talking with a friend we argued about who had the worst music in our collections of tapes/cds/records. So we made a challenge: Terror Tape We couldn't get anything new, only what we had at the time: 90 minutes of our worst. I went with Eric Clapton's Layla as the opener and intentionally made it skip (and cut it short abruptly Gloves off! Then would drop that skip (just the part LAYLA ) in so many songs, but not all! Terror requires surprise. anyways! it was a hilarious time - jumping back in - love where this is going !!! omg the Venn diagram! Layla fits all those circles holy shit you're a scientist
What I love about Revolution no 9 is that this thing made it onto one of the most iconic records of all time. It isn't as song, it's Lennon's stab at something called Concrete Music; an early attempt by avante garde composers to use the studio and the tape they recordered to as an instrument (hence the name, concrete was a symbol of fixed permanence and modernity, as opposed to old fashioned performance which would be different every time). This was never meant for the mainstream, it was for the adventurous to push the definition of music to the breaking point so it could be stitched back together at a later date in the brave new world of music written for the record rather than the stage. We owe a lot to this experimental genre, so many concepts and techniques we take for granted spring from that well, but public consumption was never the goal. Lennon's attempt was downright pedestrian in that context, resulting in a track that's well beyond the pale for casual audiences but way too casual for people actually into this stuff. But considering this the Beatles were the first mainstream act to make music for the record with no intention of playing the results live, there's something beautifully appropriate about it being in their catalog.
I had to pause the video at 4:08 because I was struck by just how _boring_ that picture of Imagine Dragons is. I don't think I've ever seen a photograph of a band with less personality ever. What a terrible picture. Fits in with their music, though.
One thing this video made me realise is that I live in a very European bubble when it comes to music, because most of the songs and artists mentioned I had never even heard of
I agree with you whole heartedly with Temporary Secretary. It is so so so bad to the point where I just love it so much. Definitely one that will pop up on my spotify top 100.
This is the first video I'm seeing from your channel, and I'm already absolutely in love with your content. You're very well spoken and have an insanely beautiful voice!
This video made me realize why I really like video game music. By most of the metrics you use to measure how bad a song is, most of them except for annoying and once great artists don't even get the opportunity to show themselves, given most of the music is instrumental. And for once great artists to really do any damage to your view of the music, you often have to be looking really hard, and even then, it's usually not even a problem. Annoying is really the only one that can even be noticeable, and usually an annoying piece's only purpose to punish the player for losing, so it does its job well at worst based on these metrics. This also goes for classical music often. Now I still think music theory and how well the song portrays what it is trying to portray is still one of the most important metrics as for how good a song is, but aside from that, this video really does a great job at explaining my taste atleast. I hope to see more content like this in the future.
yeah dance monkey and imagine dragons is definitely at the top of my list for worst music. not just the fact that its so insanely overplayed but it genuinely angers me. for imagine dragons its so overproduced and so overly theatric and try hard i cant stand it. it feels like they made these songs to be annoying but i know they have fans, my mom and sister absolutely love them
I usually never agree with these 'worst music' videos (i still don't im still mad at the hobo Johnson slander) but i can definitely say this was interesting to learn about, good vid i am checking out your other stuff and possibly subbing :3
you're so right about pop champagne sounding like a cave man beat 😭😭 the beat is so cartoonishly simple it sounds like they replaced the actual beat for a different one last minute and didnt tell anyone because the music video makes the song look like its gonna sound a lot better than it actually does sound
AJR deserved to be mentioned for cringe and annoying, I particulatly hate Birthday Party. They also have a song that goes "Now I'm feeling just like Woody Allen!!" which...idk what happened there. I know they didn't mean it in that way but Woody Allen has been arguably more well known for his crimes against humanity [ie; marrying his adoptive step-daughter, a girl he raised since she was a toddler] than his films since the 1990's. It's oddly specific and tone deaf.
people don’t like temporary secretary? It has a 71 on album of the year; that’s in the green. It has a catchy chorus and the electronic instrumentation was fairly progressive for the time.
In a few albums time I expect Siwa will have completed her cringe phase like Miley did and will be putting out some really good music. You've got to let the child stars get their crazy out of the system so they can then make some quality.
I hate Anthony Fantano just because he gave Dreamland by Glass Animals a not good, it's literally an amazing album and made me cry during some songs, shit's good bruh.
I mean, Nickelback is decent. The hate really started because it was overplayed on the radio and I forget the specifics, but I believe the inciting incident was someone dissing them on a talk show
So many of these songs hurt to hear, temporary secretary I do love and I laugh my ass off getting high and listening to it but Jesus everytime the whole “you done goofed” thing is mentioned it is so hard to hear and remember how so many people just let it happen
@@man.actualthey were one of the biggest bands, whos music was everywhere, movies, tv, all over radio, everywhere Then it became a meme to hate on them and everyone just follows suit People fucking loved them no matter how hard people act like they didn't, fuckin LOVED them
@ThirteenAmp Comedian Brian Posehn said it as a bit on a live TV panel at the height of their popularity and it caught on as a fad to say Nickelback sucks. They are one of Canada's biggest and most successful bands in history
@@ThirteenAmp As someone who genuinely does not like Nickelback, I can tell you that people who do hate Nickelback exist and for more than "it's just popular to hate on Nickelback" hype. Nickelback to me is pretty much the go-to in my mind for the kind of generic pop-rock that people think of when talking about music meant to appease some corporate guy at a record label, the musical equivalent of candy corn. Inoffensive, bland, cheap and unchanging, meant to buy in bulk and safely forget about. The sort of thing carefully designed and shaped to attach to a commercial. They were everywhere because whenever someone needed to sell something to you, a Nickelback song could be carefully dissected and distributed to whoever needed a lyrical soundbite for a thirty second ad rip, and not just one song, but entire albums could be used this way. Even their most anti-authority stuff, like "This Afternoon" and "Burn it to the Ground" sound like they were made to get you to buy a pack of Budweiser and a Dodge Ram using nostalgia aimed at people twice the band's age. I'm not saying that all music needs to be fresh or challenging. But Nickelback's discography is just the same generally inoffensive and unchanging blandness delivered consistency over years, a musical gruel that never changes, even just to be generic in a different way. The two exceptions to this in my mind are "Into The Night", even tough that's mostly carried by Carlos Santana's guitar work, and the song that put them on the map, "Hero". And hey, you like Nickelback? That's fine. That's your preference and I won't try to change your mind. But don't assume in turn that people like me hate Nickelback just because some comedian I've personally never heard of told us to two decades ago, because there is a lot of valid critique to be made about their music.
a contender, although swedish (we're sorry) is "mr wool - rulla garn" which is basically a song about taking advantage of minors and getting away with it using social status. its so bad it got removed from spotify and youtube, so the creator remade it to use pun words instead of the really bad ones, and that version survived apparently. i could link the YT video and translate the lyrics but i think ill just not do that.
I feel like "loving a song even tho it's bad" is a concept that demands a lot more scrutiny before you can get into "why is a song bad?" Like what's the argument for why Temporary Secretary is bad? The song clearly rocks. It has a skronky synth texture which maybe gives a bad first impression, but other than that, what's wrong with it? If you don't make a case for why it's bad, then you have reduced your argument to a tautology, and worse than that, a tautology whose contradictions can be ignored
I like Dance Monkey because of the unique vocal performance and because of the lyrics and production, plus the bass hits hard I can see how its greatest strength (its vocals) can also be seen as its greatest weakness though
5:46 to be honest, i kinda like "dance monkey": the lyrics did something to me when i listened to this song on my headphones late at night. i don't listen to radio and mostly find music through my friends or on reddit, so i didn't listen to "dance monkey" as much as you probably did. and it's sad that a song with lyrics like: "So they say Dance for me, dance for me, dance for me, oh-oh" and "And when you're done, I'll make you do it all again" - became something that made Tones and I something of a dance monkey too, since she now just has to perform this song, as it's the most popular in her discography
Earth by lil dicky and various artists are perfect fit for all categories. Annoying: A lot of featured artists present on the song are heavily autotuned to the point of nonrecognition. It's too hard to listen. Cringe: The music video has some uncomfortably awful moments. Some of the lyrics are painfully disgusting and perverted, it was incredibly unfunny. Velma was better than THIS. Offensive: there was one line said "We Forgive You Germany" was instantly red flag. Hated figure: Lil dicky is nobody's favourite, he's just Amy Schumer version of music. Most of the casts are my least favourite as well, like Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, Adam Levine, Ed Sheeran, Meghan Trainor and etc. Former good: Lil dicky used to be decent artist. He made a song called "Professional Rapper" was actually pretty good. His TV show, Dave was pretty good too. Till he stop making good or decent music anymore. Same goes to Freaky Friday but I'm stop ranting about it.

The most surprising thing about Blood On The Dance Floor is how many albums they made, they were pumping out albums every year between the late 2000s/early 2010s.

Nah i disagree
Every song i’ve heard like that (which really isnt common cause that kind of music rarely gets posted/popular) has a charm
The shaggs is the most famous example. I cant hate on the music cause it’s charming and cute enough to appreciate beyond the actual listening experience
Also, as you’ve said, that kind of stuff can bring attitude
A singer that yells into mic and doesnt care about pitch is punk af. And punk is mega cool
that reminds me of my favorite song, rock n roll McDonalds
@@eggalytheegg5567 Banger
Jesus Jesus Japanesus
I think is she had some one to help her with lyrical work earlier on, it wouldn't be as bad, she can obviously rap phonetically. as we know now she can sing all multiple genres, and i think moving to japan and working wity a multitude of producers has let her move the craft forward and not be cringe 24?7
As someone who has made some bad music over the years, and is fascinated by and drawn to bad art, your appreciation for it is refreshing. Thank you for making this video.
Id say revolution 9 is a really important one for experimental music, specifically sound collages, as id say its the first instance of a sound collage being really mainstream
It may not be the most fun to listen to or even very good as a piece of experimental music, but there's no denying its historical significance
It was certainly one of the most interesting bits of avant garde music to ever hit the mainstream.
if You Done Goofed is the worst song of all time then Piggyback by Melanie Martinez has to be a close second as it's the exact same situation except Melanie actually got away with everything and is hugely successful to this day

It's interesting in a lot of your examples what we judge is not music itself but culture around it.
i thought this would be a video about some choices music makers do that could make music sound bad and as a starting musician it was interesting for me ahah turns out it's more about cultural context /neutral
I would say another category that could be added is “forgettable”
i didn't know the abusers made that song in the "you done goofed" story, that does indeed sound like the worst song ever
man, I always feel bad for DemonDice, not only cuz I do like her streams and I think she is a very nice person for what it seems, but the hate she receives feels so disproportionate, even if I do think she makes really bad music (although I like a couple of her songs in her vtuber persona, damn, I would even call some of them good)
Yeah I love Karen and cali but I just avoid her music
Tbh, there are some bands that formed to sound awful but go hard like Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, DNA, the Germs, Sonic Youth (81-84) and Whitehouse. Much easier of a listen than any planted pop/mumble/reggaeton act
Sonic youth was formed to sound bad!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
They’re so creative!!
James Chance just passed. RIP
Nah Teenage Jesus and DNA didn’t form to sound bad. They were deliberately incredibly dissonant and loud, definitely a precursor to noise but teenage Jesus and the jerks used to practice constantly, they worked out how to make a lot of noise sound fantastic.
Wait Teenage Jesus were supposed to be bad?!
Ween is another good example.
Just saw the intro so far and i'm so stoked! Talking with a friend we argued about who had the worst music in our collections of tapes/cds/records. So we made a challenge: Terror Tape
We couldn't get anything new, only what we had at the time: 90 minutes of our worst.
I went with Eric Clapton's Layla as the opener and intentionally made it skip (and cut it short abruptly Gloves off! Then would drop that skip (just the part LAYLA ) in so many songs, but not all! Terror requires surprise. anyways! it was a hilarious time - jumping back in - love where this is going
!!! omg the Venn diagram!

Hated figure and annoying

Look at this graph
a contender, although swedish (we're sorry) is "mr wool - rulla garn" which is basically a song about taking advantage of minors and getting away with it using social status. its so bad it got removed from spotify and youtube, so the creator remade it to use pun words instead of the really bad ones, and that version survived apparently. i could link the YT video and translate the lyrics but i think ill just not do that.
I feel like "loving a song even tho it's bad" is a concept that demands a lot more scrutiny before you can get into "why is a song bad?"
Like what's the argument for why Temporary Secretary is bad? The song clearly rocks. It has a skronky synth texture which maybe gives a bad first impression, but other than that, what's wrong with it? If you don't make a case for why it's bad, then you have reduced your argument to a tautology, and worse than that, a tautology whose contradictions can be ignored
The video is extremely flawed.

to be honest, i kinda like "dance monkey": the lyrics did something to me when i listened to this song on my headphones late at night. i don't listen to radio and mostly find music through my friends or on reddit, so i didn't listen to "dance monkey" as much as you probably did. and it's sad that a song with lyrics like:
"So they say
Dance for me, dance for me, dance for me, oh-oh"
and
"And when you're done, I'll make you do it all again" -
became something that made Tones and I something of a dance monkey too, since she now just has to perform this song, as it's the most popular in her discography
I wonder how these categories and overall discussion would work for instrumental, vocal-free songs, a video on them would be so interesting!
