  • Deanna Durbin performs the Scottish folk song which was probably composed in the 1700s. This clip comes from the 1940 movie "It's a Date", filmed when Durbin was 18.
By yon bonnie banks and by yon bonnie braes
Where the sun shines bright on Loch Lomond
Where me and my true love were ever wont to gae
On the bonnie, bonnie banks o' Loch Lomond.
O you'll tak' the high road and I'll tak' the low road
And I'll be in Scotland afore ye
For me and my true love will ne-er meet again
On the bonnie, bonnie banks o' Loch Lomond.
'Twas there that we parted in yon shady glen
On the steep, steep sides o' Ben Lomond
Where deep in purple hue, the hieland hills we view
And the moon comin' out in the gloamin'.

My 94 year old dad told me he remembers when he was a child and he and his family used to listen to Ms. Durbin on the radio. They just loved her.

Deanna Durbin once again transports with a beautiful voice, fine technique, and heartfelt sincerity. Singing of this quality does not exist in the film world anymore, and frankly, rarely in the opera world either.

The stability and purity of tone of her voice throughout its range. The innocence and authority of her interpretation, astonishing for an 18 year old. It floods the mind with its beauty and melancholy.

I need to come back to this every now and again, if only to remind myself that there is still some Beauty and Truth in the world. God Bless Deanna Durbin for her unwitting communications through her beautiful, angelic voice, and the Scotts for their haunting and timeless music - the Angels are with us still. Amazing how 21st century technology is working its magic.

Deanna's magic is she truly feels every song. She is not acting, she is not performing, she is living the song. True also of her films. She believes every word she is saying, every situation in which she is acting; that's an ability that cannot be learned. The heart is either there or it isn't.

Frankly one of the greatest folk songs of all time...on the vocal front: just been gushing on Deanna's version of 'Danny Boy' so won't repeat...but the love & compassion for the subject matter in her interpretation of the song is just so moving & inspiring for modern singers...all round marvellous, thanks for posting!

I couldn't agree more! We sometimes listen to a modern song and think it's somewhat ok or good ...but when we here something like this ...WOW! This is music! and poetry! and beauty! and real passion! (not the vulgar filth today) I love the Irish and Scottish songs, they are so passionate and poetic.

I sang this for my schools cabaret night. I was always in choir and always loved to sing but I was always the shy quiet girl in the back who would refuse to sing infront of people, so you can Imagine everybodys surprise when I started singing this on the stage. My Grandmother came from Scotlnd and asked me to sing this when she dies. I love her and this song so much.

Oh wow... she is SO gorgeous in this scene. Her hair suits her face very well like that. And of course she sing this amazingly- that goes without saying!
You know, it is sad that she left show business after such a relatively short time (leaving a mere 22 films for us to survive on!), but I am almost glad she did leave Hollywood and all before it ruined her (she left it because she hated what it was becoming), like it did so many other actors and actresses. She sure had her head on straight...

"THE SONG WAS MADE IN 1756 " Actually that is a good story but that is probably all it is. The song was first attested by Alicia Spottiswoode (a songwriter from the Scottish Borders) in about 1840. She said that she'd heard it from a singer in Edinburgh. Many suspect she wrote it herself. The story about Carlisle comes form a later poem (1880s approx) by another Scottish Borderer called Andrew Lang based on the song.
