It's one of my favorite horror books of all time. It was interesting that they found the ships after the book was published but before the show and they incorporated some of the newfound information into the show. The book really did make you terrified of the cold with the details. I agree with the polar bear in the show though, they should have made it just a real polar bear only sized up, as they did with the dire wolves in Game of Thrones; or made it so that you never really see it except maybe at the end (the Jaws effect) which would have really worked.

I LOVED The Terror by Dan Simmons. It was spooky, historically accurate, and grim. The series was OK. The one great thing about books is that your imagination is far better than can be portrayed on a television set.

Such an incredible book. Simmons is a titan. That book, along with his Hyperion Cantos, cements him as one of the greatest writers ever.

I can heartily recommend Michael Palin’s book Erebus to those interested in the factual story of the two ships.

I read this one last year and thought it was excellent. Living in Western Canada, I am familiar with severe cold weather and Dan Simmons caught the feeling of being cold superbly. The TV series was decent but the book was so much better with its feeling of dread and hopelessness.

I read this novel about 7 years ago and it became one of my favorites of all time. I finally got around to watching the TV show last year. You're right - the performances are very good, but the show just isn't anywhere near as immersive as the book. Also, I think the show really veered from the book once the crew left the ships. Am I right? It's been 7 years but it felt much different.

I think the series ultimately had a different story each season. The first season was based on Dan’s book. The book is also one of my favorites. I own several different editions of The Terror, including some from other countries in different languages. Obviously Hyperion is great, but Simmons has several other great novels, like The Terror, Carrion Comfort, Summer of Night, and Drood (to name a few of my favorites).

So many books in my Audible collection are there because of you. Adding this one now. I’ll get to it after the Sun Eater books. I love a good spooky whorer novel.

Carrie is an epistolary novel too, told through a series of letters. Not my favorite narrative vehicle, but Gene Wolfe's The Sorcerer's House handles the convention well.

I agree with your qualms with writing techniques in most stories, but I too found that it did not detract from the book. I read the book a year ago and just finished the series and definitely prefer the book over the series.

I hear from Jonathan Koan that The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is good for a winter read.
"In medias res necessitates flashbacks, which strike me as boring and sort of corny. They always make me think of those movies from the forties and fifties where the picture gets all swimmy, the voices get all echoey, and suddenly it's sixteen months ago... but I like to start at square one... I'm an A-to-Z man; serve me the appetizer first and give me dessert if I eat my veggies." -- Stephen King, On Writing

I live in linconshire not far from Spilsby where John Franklin was born and raised. His statue is in the town centre. It's a brilliant book but i didn't like the tv series. Michael Palin (Monty Python) wrote a book titled Erebus. You should read it. It's the story of Franklin's ship.

I'm on my third time reading this, It's my heading into work on the train book and it's 20 degrees out now. Also, Terror was a bomb ship in 1812, before it was refitted. So the rockets red glare and bombs bursting in air were coming off the Terror's decks. I also have an idea for a whore horror novel, but it might be too whore-able. I'll see myself out.

This book did a good job of explaining how prejudice and superstition are not survival traits. The English took all of their old ways into a new environment and completely ignored all the techniques that the native people had developed to survive. They took their canned foods and their heavy canvas coats and ignored the furs and skins that the natives used. It was all there for them to utilize and adapt to but they stuck with their old ways. You have to eat a lot of blubber to keep your metabolism peaked to survive and those conditions. Also I didn't see the menace on the ice as a supernatural being but more of a polar bear evolutionary precursor that was still surviving in its natural environment. The creature was never really explained well in the book and the miniseries could only lessen its impact by actually showing it. I didn't really notice how cheesy it was because I was focused on how the arc of the characters had been moved around a bit. All in all a very memorable read.

They weren’t English, they were British. And the British did a pretty good job of navigating all sorts of environments in the 19th century!
Very easy to apply criticism in hindsight, but a country doesn’t get to control 25% of the world without being extremely determined, resourceful and adaptable.

There's a Soviet YA, The Two Captains.. During the spring floods a posrman was killed and all vukaags listens to the letters. Several are from a captain who led an expedition to the North Pole. The kid decides to find the expedition. And he manages. Only in the middle there are The Civil War and WWI, and WWII. I used to love it as a kid. I think that I am going to reread it, to see how it hdjdn
