I remember seeing a friend playing this when I was maybe 7 or 8 years old, he was in "lady-mode" with a fully upgraded weapon and just destroying everything. I had never seen anything like it at the time. I begged my dad to take me to M&M video to rent the game and when I got home and popped it in it was a top-down space shooter! I thought I had fucked up and rented the wrong game. Then when she transformed for the first time my mind was blown again! So many good memories with this game, it was so far ahead of its time!
Absolutely correct! Nothing on NES compares! An impossibly long, many weapons, 2 endings, 20+ flying levels, long quest game, mazes & secrets, fast paced, HUGE bosses, mini bosses, etc.!!!
Definitely one of my favorite NES games of all time. I love how the person leaving instructions for you is never seen - it gives the whole game an extra creepy feeling, knowing they're already dead. "If someone is reading this, I must have failed ..."
The Guardian Legend has been one of my favorite games since I was like 10 years old. No one else I knew had ever even HEARD of it, and except for the copy I had, I never heard about it either. (To be fair, I didn't have any gaming magazine subscriptions.) I'm not even sure where my copy came from, which is a little weird. Even back in my 20s I was able to show the game to people who were blown away by how much there was in to do in this NES game they'd never heard of before. The extremely fast first level, the huge amount of weapons, the variety in monsters, the puzzles, and the absolutely amazing music still blows me away. I'm super happy to see this on your channel. :)
Glad you covered this title, kinda was getting sick of always telling ppl about it and really no one knowing what I was talking about, definitely amongst the best on the NES
I wanna thank you for the review. I was going through so old boxes at my Mom's house and I came across an old one from like 1989, It was full of passcodes for all my NES games, Guardian Legend was in the middle of the pack and I really could not remember the game. That's why I'm here. Seached it on TH-cam and here you are. As soon as your vid started my memories all came back to me!!!!!! Thank you so much for helping relive myself when I was like 15 years old!!!!!! Have the best day!!!!!!

I've always been a fan of his shorter, more succinct reviews compared to other TH-camr's long-winded and tedious reviews that hit the 10-15 minute mark. They tend to just ramble just to superficially stretch the video length.
IDK...Bender once dated the Planet Express ship and she turned out to be super needy and clingy. She even showed up at Fry's apartment in the middle of the night once asking if he knew where Bender was. Man, she was a mess.

it was why i bought it, i actually got the famicom version and for some weird reason , it was all in english....and that was strange because most games were in japanes, even tmnt and ninja gaiden and even double dragon 3 , but this one ? it was in english and i flipped out, but yeah, i admit, the girl on the cover sold the game to me.
Thanks for posting this. My brother and I loved this game. Later this month he will be gone 2 years. This made me think of him. Awesome game, great review.
This game is actually a sequel to Guardic, an MSX shooter created by Pac Fujishima and also produced by Compile, in fact this game is known as Guardic Gaiden in Japan - even though this game has nothing to do with Guardic at all. Naoyuki Kato designed the Japanese cover for Guardic Gaiden. The GBA game Sigma Star Saga seems to be inspired by this game.
The Guardian Legend is one of my all time favorite games. I remember renting this from my local non-chain video rental place in the middle of nowhere and immediately being hooked. The music still does it for me, too.
You must be rewarding me for my kind comment on your last video because this is my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE NES GAME OF ALL TIME!!! I sunk dozens on hours into playing and replaying this as a child. Thank you for review this fantastic title!
Right on! I played and finished this one for the first time about a year ago, and I wish I’d found it sooner! It holds up really well, and I’m glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for all the great, fun videos, sir!
Those were two of my absolute favorites as a kid, and I'm happy to say they're still awesome to play every now and again, even amongst all the games that are available nowadays!!
Those 2 games are killer minor-classics for the NES and some of my dearest gaming memories growing up. Throw in Faxanadu and you got the ultimate trifecta of NES cult hits for young Baton.
So glad to hear that you liked this game. It's my favorite NES game, hell, one of my favorite games period of all time. There is a PW you can put in that allows you to play the game in SHMUP mode with only the shooter stages. I used it and did a 1cc last year. I also interviewed Moo Niitani the founder of Compile and will be releasing that too at some point this year. Thank you for covering this game!

I’m glad you covered this game! It’s by far one of the best games the NES has to offer! It did many small things to take it up to a 10, such as an in-game map and the mixing of genres. Top it off with a fantastic soundtrack and intriguing story-there hasn’t been a game to rival this one in decades. I’m awaiting the remake.
Dude this was my all time favorite nes game ever. This game is amazing. I wonder why no one ever made a sequel or tried to duplicate its gameplay. I wish an indie dev would remake this for switch.
I had this game as a little kid - right around 8 years old. I remember finding it incredibly difficult. Not so much when you were walking around, but as a spaceship it was very tough.

And now that I know super well the NES limitations, I'm impressed how well this game runs with all that stuff happening on the screen.
TGL definitely is a must-play for anyone who wants to experience NES-games. It is a tough game to beat, but so satisfying! I still love this game to this day.
Great video, SNESdrunk. Highly recommended. I bought this back in the day, and I just found the manual a couple weeks ago. Didn't like Guardian Legend as much as Zanac, but that's because I got into shooters way more than Zelda-style games anyway.
I think this game is underrated, it's such a good mix of shooter and adventure the music is great and is one of the games on NES I have the fondest memories of.
Fun Fact, The nes cover of Guardian legend was inspired by a sci fi 80s movie cover called "Creature 1988" or "Alien Predators 1988". Check out the cover comparisons it's worth a look to see the strong similarities.
Always loved this game. It holds interesting history for me. My brother's friend found it on the side of the road in pretty crappy condition. But he was able to somehow get it to work (there was even use of electrical tape). I remember being blown away at how different it was from the other NES games I played. Kinda funny how a game in pretty rough shape ended up being a favorite of mine which I ended up buying a copy of for my own collection. No idea what ended up happening to the busted up copy.
I owned the Guardian legend game. The sound test was also awesome!!. It had a great music sound track so I would put the game in sometimes and listen just to the music.
This game is amazing. I vividly remember playing it all the time as a kid. My young brain couldn’t handle the labyrinth areas well, so I always used the “TGL” code to play only the shoot’em up levels
Haha that's quite the contrast between cover art. Would you rather turn into a sweet spaceship or hang out with the illegitimate daughter of H.R. Geiger and the Borg Queen? 🤔
The US art almost seems like they misplaced another games art on this. I love the Japanese art. Didn't expect it to be so Geiger, but this is a game about aliens.
I found your channel recently and really enjoy your content. The Guardian Legend is up there for me as favorite NES games go. Have you reviewed Faxanadu? Either way, thanks for the content. Cheers!
I wish there was a sequel, but what a game this was. It’s on my top video game of all time, it just fit so well and fun. Too bad very few people know about this exceptional gem. Nothing like it to this day.
I've replayed this just recently and has aged really really well for a 35 years old game. Absolutely recommended, the game is a blast. Ps: the front and side lightsabre are the best weapons against bosses
i had a shop in my town that sells famicom carts , the only reason i bought it was because of that mindblowing artwork on the cover....the game was great, maybe some of the best music on the nes, sadly i never finished it, i remember i was stuck and got the message ''ask the round creature'' but never figured it out...
It's also one of my personal favorite NES games, it's Zanac meets Zelda. Great music, good challenge, and I had to make damn sure I wrote down those passwords correctly!
Well there is one game that comes to my mind when you said there isn't any game like this.. Super Metroid or even Metroid, yeah sure there are some few differences, but they are in many ways alike. 1st - they both wear robot amor and Samus can transform into morphball, "The Guardian", that's her name, (yeah I know) can transform into a spacejet! 2nd - they both have to go on a mission to destroyer an entire planet. 3rd - Samus Aran acquires different weapons and upgrades in the game. The Guardian also does this.. Now would I call it a Metroid game? Of course not, but the similiarities are there... But this was a good video, I've owned and played the game since the year 2000 and I like it a lot! NnnNNnnnnNNnNnNNnnnice one ^_^

My favorite game EVER! I MUST PLAY! UNREAL!!
I forgot about this game, but it all came flooding back as soon as the music started playing.
This game is amazing. I vividly remember playing it all the time as a kid. My young brain couldn’t handle the labyrinth areas well, so I always used the “TGL” code to play only the shoot’em up levels
That Japanese art is cool
Haha that's quite the contrast between cover art. Would you rather turn into a sweet spaceship or hang out with the illegitimate daughter of H.R. Geiger and the Borg Queen? 🤔
The US art almost seems like they misplaced another games art on this. I love the Japanese art. Didn't expect it to be so Geiger, but this is a game about aliens.
Second one
Would it really be that illegitimate, considering Geiger?
@@ggbetz Haha good point. Get a real Kerrigan from StarCraft vibe from her too.
@@samfrito The U.S. art is shamelessly ripped from the poster for a sci-fi monster movie called Creature (aka The Titan Find). Very lazy.
I found your channel recently and really enjoy your content. The Guardian Legend is up there for me as favorite NES games go. Have you reviewed Faxanadu? Either way, thanks for the content. Cheers!
This game blew me away as a kid. It combined elements of two of my other favorite games (Galaga and Zelda) AND had an awesome soundtrack to boot!
The music in this game reminds me a lot of the Kemco point and click games, which was always amazing.
Great review drunk. Loce this game definitely amongst one of the bedt in the nes library.
1:03 This cover looks like "Ghost in the shell"cover.
Best nes game ever made imo & The Guardian Legend: Secret Edition hack is awesome to👌🏻
This game, more than even Mario, takes me back to my younger years. Thank you for reviewing it!
I own this game and is one of my favorites of all time, but as I'm not an expert in shooters, I tend to use the NES Advantage for those sections.
I wish there was a sequel, but what a game this was. It’s on my top video game of all time, it just fit so well and fun. Too bad very few people know about this exceptional gem. Nothing like it to this day.
New SNESdrunk video. That's an awesome way to start the day.
This game looks crazy! I'm surprised at how few games blend multiple genres together, its a really neat idea
Damn, it'd be cool to see this remade.
That soundtrack is the best on the nes. Hands down. The sense of speed was amazing in that game. One of my favorites of all time.
I've replayed this just recently and has aged really really well for a 35 years old game. Absolutely recommended, the game is a blast.
Ps: the front and side lightsabre are the best weapons against bosses
i had a shop in my town that sells famicom carts , the only reason i bought it was because of that mindblowing artwork on the cover....the game was great, maybe some of the best music on the nes, sadly i never finished it, i remember i was stuck and got the message ''ask the round creature'' but never figured it out...
i remember coming home from school on lunch break trying to beat some of the bosses.... fond memories for this game thanks
NnnNNnnnnNNnNnNNnnnice one
^_^
The music and game looks really awesome.
I got a Spanish Shazam trailer before this... You're reach is extending my man!
This looks like a lot of fun. Cheers for the review, I should go and find this NES game.
my father owned this game as a kid but couldn’t remember the name, but after some digging we found it was this game. this game seems badass.
One of my favorite game when I was a kid. XD
Soundtrack of this game are so awesome even with today standard.
Game looks so good. I haven't had time to start it but of the few NES titles I want to legit revist, this is one.
Looks awesome I think I might've picked up a copy at a flea market a while ago cheap but idk I'll have to look and see what I got
I never played this, but want to now it looks great. Love the mashup of schmup and Blaster Master-style gameplay
Oh man, this brings back memories. I used to play this game for hours at a time. This game needs to come to the Switch.
Up right down and to the left to create a break in the bullets if ur on the right side of the screen. And same manoeuvre if ur on the left
