  • The Sega CD, released as the Mega-CD in most regions outside North America and Brazil, is a CD-ROM accessory for the Sega Genesis produced by Sega as part of the fourth generation of video game consoles. It was released on December 12, 1991, in Japan, October 15, 1992, in North America, and April 2, 1993, in Europe. The Sega CD plays CD games and adds hardware functionality such as a faster CPU and graphic enhancements such as sprite scaling and rotation. It can also play audio CDs and CD+G discs.
The Sega CD game library featured acclaimed games such as Sonic CD, Lunar: The Silver Star, Lunar: Eternal Blue, Popful Mail, and Snatcher, but also many Genesis ports and poorly received FMV games. The high price of the Sega CD was also a contributing factor in its lack of success. Only 2.24 million Sega CD units were sold, after which Sega discontinued it to focus on the Sega Saturn. Retrospective reception has been mixed, with praise for some games and functions, but criticism for its dearth of deep games, high price, and lack of support from Sega. Sega's poor support for the Sega CD has been criticized as the beginning of the devaluation of its brand.

    some tech specs:
-all genesis, master system, and sega cd captured with original hardware. for this video i sourced all sega genesis and sega cd* footage with a model 2 that has received a triple bypass, and a sega cd model 2, outputting over HDRetrovsiion yPbPr cables to a retrotink 5x Pro. master system footage provided via mega everdrive pro cart into my triple bypass genesis.
*sol-feace was recorded with a sega cd-x, no mods, over HDRetrovsiion yPbPr cables to a retrotink 5x Pro. of all the sega footage, sol-feace does appear a touch softer, this is why. i didnt want to go back a recapture this footage, so i used footage i capped like 2 years ago insetad.
-dreamcast footage captured with original hardware over composite to the retrotink, because HDRV refuses to give us plebs the good cables. :P
-all other gameplay has been captured via emulation, because i don't have good cables for my other systems, so i just said eff it and emulated the TG16 and SNES and such.
-this probably could have been longer and more informative, but i only started working on it Oct 1, after hemming and hawing for months about committing to the project.
sega cd model 1 vanity shots b-roll licensed from My Life In Gaming. huge thanks to them, because otherwise i woudl have had to just do some lame ken burns on jpegs of consoles.

Very good vid. I was so awestruck when I saw that Sega CD box up on the high shelf behind the cashier at a local store. When I saw the $299.99 price tag, I thought that it was some kind of mistake. Even when they brought the price down to $229.99 (when I bought it), most people wouldn't go for it.
In 1995, they lowered the price again to $99, but the 32X was $159.99, and most gamers were broke!
With the Saturn rumored to be coming out, everyone had to save up, and we all wondered what SEGA was thinking. If they weren't going to put out games that made good use of the Sega CD's superscaler ASIC-DSP, why should we trust them?

Great video! I had a Model 2 Sega CD back in the 90s that my brother whom also got me into RPGs, handed down to me. He had Sewer Shark (which I've always loved and never understood the hate it received), Dark Wizard, AD&D Eye of the Beholder, Vay, Lunar: The Silver Star, Dragon's Lair, and Star Wars: Rebel Assault. Not a bad lot to start with.

5:55 a stroke of genius at the time, but the ever so many expansion products killed confidence in SEGA products in my opinion.

Great video. I’d like to know how much viewing the FMV titles on a CRT would help smooth out the massive amount of dithering they used. Looks really stark on a flat display, but I’d hope the TV technology of the time would have been much kinder to it?

perhaps i may consider doing a comparison of a crt vs lcd. it won't be exact science cause i'll be pointing a camera at screens... but it may be fun to look at...
