I do not recall the name of the cake but the place in Rhaunen had a chocolate cake with a dark chocolate coating sometimes with some a minor cherry filing and sometimes with more chocolate or hazelnut filing. It was not overly sweet but paired wonderfully with a strong cup of coffee.

I was just in Germany for 12 days and enjoyed the daily ritual of Kaffee und Kuchen. We tried as many flavor combinations in Stuttgart, Heidelburg, Mannheim, and Frankfurt. The standout for me was Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte, Käse- und Sahnetorte, Bienenstich, Himbeerkuchen, Schokoladen-Whisky-Kuchen and Frankfurter Kranz. There are so many more cakes to try on our next visit. Thank you for sharing your suggestions!

I can vividly remember my first visit to a German Konditorei. I had never seen such an array of beautiful cakes and pastries. It was the ultimate treat to sit in and have cake with incredible coffee or hot chocolate. I had the huge privilege to live in Germany for ten years. I still miss things like this.

Coming from Wisconsin I have eaten some of these cakes Crumb cake, Butter cake. poppy seed cake which I really like, Black Forrest Cake and Prizaregententorte which i have every year at Milwaukee's Germanfest. I just had a Schnitzle dinner a few weeks ago in a small restaurant in of all places , Sierra Vista ,Arizona which was run by woman originally from Germany complete with the accent. A great dinner complete with REAL German Potato salad and Kraut salat.

"Quetschekuche" here in Hesse. Thin Hefeteig (yeast dough) and Zwetschgen (damson plum), no sugar icing, no cream, out of the oven, eaten warm directly from the baking tray... simply the best cake, maybe best food in the world!

Zwiebelkuchen is very popular here in Südbaden. It's rather seasonal though. It's commonly eaten during the 'Neue Wein' (New/fresh wine) season in the fall. But i had some very good Zwiebelkuchen in France, too.
But it's one of those things that you either love or hate...i love it at a 'Strausse' with a good Federweisse😁

You are missing the Friesentorte or Frisians tart it’s the traditional tart from the island of Föhr. It‘s just some layers of puff pastry and whipped cream filled with plum purée. It‘s usually served along with Pharisäer (coffee with rum covered under whipped cream) or Tote Tante which means Death Aunt, that‘s a hot chocolate with rum or brandy. A Friesentorte with a Pharisäer will warm you up after long beach walk in the winter time, like these days.

Thank you for this video, it brought back many memories of my grandfather. He apprenticed as a baker, in Berlin, before and during WWI. In Chicago, he was the Head Pastry Chef at the Bismarck Hotel. When he retired he baked all our bakery needs. Bread was never store bought and he always had some type of cake and some cookies. You need to do a cookie video, too. My fav was the sugar cake. He would make the top thicker, so it would crack and add cinnamon. Before he retired ,on Friday, he would buy sweete from the public hotel store. Bismarck's, fruit pies, baumkuchen, on and on. Plus, his friends baked or made candies: That we still had a pancreas as adults is surprising. His surname was Nettelbeck which has a Platz in Berlin. Did you know you cannot buy Baumkuchen from Germany, is on non import list, but you can buy from Japan ?

    • @bobeczek01
      @bobeczek01 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The types of cakes you see there are all similar to the one you can find in Poland. But the most traditional would be sernik (baked cheesecake); cakes with cream feeling and chocolate are called tort (mostly made for big occasions); we have two or three types of apple cakes and also pretty similar can be a szarlotka so apple cake with bread and butter crumbs or icing on top and the apples can be cooked before or added raw. Styles of baking can really be similar. All around the Europe you'll find strudle cakes that in Poland can be apple, cheese (kwark) , poppyseed or maybe cherry; a lot of cakes can be finished with merengue soft or harder; cheesecake or general cakes can often have and addition of raisins. Well I'm not sure if you look into history of cake making and baking if you actually can say oh this is German cake and this is from elsewhere. I think baking is very international. For summer you will often have strawberry and raspberries cakes in Poland either big square bakes or smaller ones which we call drożdżówki so kind off like snacking pastries good to take with you on the go and the can be with strawberries, jam &pudding; cherries, poppyseed feeling topped with sugar glaze or butter-sugar crumbs; also special type would be jagodzianka - blueberries. My grandmother used to make chocolate cake with heavy alcohol content on the buttercream, cake and raisins soaked in alcohol. The butter cream and the cake itself was made not with melted chocolate but with dark cocoa powder dar and bitter so you added sugar too. In the summer we would often have a soft white sponge with pudding cream feeling and topped with soft merengue and strawberries or baked coconut crunch. Also cream puffs with cream or cannula custard are supper popular. And doughnuts. Traditional ones are deep-fried in lard and with a rose jam filling and a thick layer of sugar icing and candied orange zest on top.

Ziebelküchen was a autumn cake we had at home. It was always a hit with my family , not so much for me. I made some apfelküchen for Thanksgiving dessert. I think that all of my favourites were there. Love Baumkuchen, prinzregententotrte and herrentorte. (a bit of a theme there I think) Whilst not German, but you can get it, I also like sachertorte. When you can find a fresh, really nice schwarzwald kirsch torte - oh, heaven! When in season, the fresh fruit cakes are lovely, especially with the crumb on top and served with sahne. I've had zwiebel kuchen but only out of a box, never fresh. German cakes with a strong black coffee are what mornings are made for!🍰🥮😍

Zwiebelkuchen are super popular in places where wine is grown during harvest. They are usually paired up with Federweisser so for example where I live (Heidelberg) you can get them EVERYWHERE during Federweisser season. Also I'd say that it's a cake in name only but not literally. It's just a sort of savory bake.

Just hop on the RE10 or U76 to Krefeld and get yourselves a piece of Grillagetorte. It usually comes in form of a round cake, but some bakeries sell mini versions of it as Grillagetörtchen.

I think that was an excellent selection! I wouldn't have included the onion cake, because in my opinion cakes need to be sweet and an onion cake is a savoury dish. But hey, just personal prefence, right? The Zitronenrolle, Biscuit roll with lemon-cream filling was also a staple at my grandmothers house (not home made though). As a child I liked Herrentorte the most, nowadays I prefer Mailänder Tore, because it's heavy on the marzipan side. I loooove Marzipan! The list could have hadf more buttercreams, but again: it was a really good list!

I usually visit Germany for 3 weeks to a month at a time my Mom and I stay with my Tante or Omi and Opi. I think I've visited around 5 times. I've not had almost any German cakes. The only thing we always have is tiramisu for our kaffee und kuchen. Love see a bunch of the different kinds.

I was born in Frankfurt and so I wanted to eat some Frankfurter Kranz. I had some problems to digest this very heavy buttercream cake 🍰. Oh boy... All in all you pretty much resumed my cake life growing up in Germany 😂 my favorite is Zwetschgen Kuchen (Quetschekuche) and Schwarzwälder Kirsch. And the dry cakes are often helped with coffee, if you don't like cream. Dry Streuselkuchen from the day before, revived by dunking it into coffee. Yum!

You forgot my favorite cake, the Käsesahnetorte (cream cheese cake) ... super delicious I tell you... onion cake is also very tasty, often served at wine festivals in the autumn, with a glass of Federweißer (freshly pressed grape juice)... best wishes from the Mosel ☺

Hi guys! So Zwiebelkuchen is sometimes exactly as Deana says: similar to a quiche.. I have found it often at Schlemmermeyer.. (there has got to be one in Duesseldorf also I think).. maybe a bit like quiche but not as much egg... definitely worth a try! 🙌

Awesome video! Btw, you don't have to go to south germany to try Eierschecke. The cake you show at 5:12 is actually a Eierschecke Mandarinen Kuchen, and sometimes that store also has it with cherries, so if its a local shop for you, you two could always try that :D

"German chocolate cake" as it is called here in the U.S. is my favorite. It is a dark chocolate cake, usually with layers of semisweet chocolate and/or coconut pecan frosting and topped with pecan coconut frosting. It's very rich and a small slice is perfect with a cup of coffee or hot cocoa.
    Edit:
literally posted this comment at the close of the video right when you mentioned German chocolate cake lol. I was aware that it's not actually German but damn is it good.

There are so many cakes I love, but when I cannot decide which one to choose, I always buy Bienenstich or Eierschecke. If there is a Schwarzwälderkirschtorte, the choice is already made xD Also Papageienkuchen (not mentioned in the video) and Zitronenkuchen are alltime favorites 🥰
Maybe, I will try this Herrentorte, never had one but sounds delicious 🤩

I believe that Deana and Phil made a vlog recently of a trip to Starbucks where they had an excellent piece of carrot cake, with real cream cheese layers. If you don't have a Starbucks near you, you could make one yourself! I've mde them, as well as other American bread-cakes like zucchini bread. Funny - what we call bread the Germans call cake, and vice versa.

Zwiebelkuchen, yessssssss, found mostly in autumn when the grape harvest has started, because we often enjoy it with the new vine that is just sweet before fermentation starts it tingles on your tongue. So therefor it is found in most vine regions or close to France. The one I loved most was the one my mom made, I even looked if there was still some left next day and preferred them over any other breakfast.
I think I missed "Gefüllter Kranzkuchen" with nuts inside and some add a chocolate coating or sugar icing. By the way, my favorite one wasn't mentioned Möhren- oder Rüblikuchen.
LOL Maybe next time you should go for "Süße Teilchen" like "Schweineohren, Granatsplitter, Zimt- oder Mohnschnecken, Apfeltaschen, Puddingbrezeln, Amerikaner, Puddingstreusel, Nussplunder, Nussecken, Krapfen, ... "

I love poppyseed strudel. It is one of my favourite desserts of all time and unfortunately hard to find in my country. The blacker and denser with poppyseeds the better. I get disappointed when they go stingy on the poppyseeds. So I am most tempted by the poppyseed cake at 1:01 or 1:05 :)

I think Deana was right, when she said that Zwiebelkuchen / onion cake is a cake in name only. I do not know if it is rather a thing in the whine regions of germany, but there it is very popular - especially during fall when the new wine is harvested. However - at least at our place not in, but next to the wine regions at the Rhine and Mosel you will find onion cake very seldom at bakeries, but rather at restaurans, winebars and even at our butcher during the specified season.

Butterkuchen is also called Funeral cake, as it's often handed out at funeral wakes. It doesn't seem to be indulgent that much and therefore is proper for a funeral, the best Butterkuchen in the world is in Jever, Ostfriesland. But, it can be a mite dry, so you need to look out, where you buy it or make it yourself).
Zwiebelkuchen is more in the South, Pfalz, Baden-Württemberg and wherever there is wine. It's most popular during the Weinlese (the grape harvest) when it is paired with new wine.

Butterkuchen tastes really good if it is fresh from the oven (warm with the butter still being liquid). It gets dry very quickly. The best Butterkuchen you can get in my region is during a so called "Mahl- und Backtag" at an old windmill, when they show the old mill running and bake fresh Butterkuchen in an old oven fired with wood.
