Katniss picking Mags, Wiress, and Beetee always made sense to me since she was an underdog as well.
She picked people that she trusted, despite their flaws or inability.

there’s a bit of irony with their characters. They’re the underdogs yet they were skilled enough to win the hunger games. I totally get in power scaling they’re physically weaker but I always found that assessment of them ironic since they are victors. This book and movie are quite splendid

    • @mish375

Beetee is a good choice of ally though if you think about it. He obviously thinks outside the box and could rig tech in the arena as traps if needed. Haymitch was annoyed though because they needed to make it look like Katniss was desperate to side with physically stronger Tributes. Because they probably worried that Snow would suspect something if she didn't. Plus those tributes were already on her side.

More importantly, the reason she was able to survive the first Hunger Games wasn't because of her brute strength like the others. She survived because the allies she had made up for the skills she didn't. She's doing it again by picking the nerds (who can notice things about the technology she can't having grown up in low-tech District 12) and the woman who knew how to survive in another environment (fishhooks).

      Katniss is smart.
She needs every variable she can get, because the games always changes.
And I also think, as much as she humble brags, she knows she is strong, so she went for the people who has 'interesting' skill set.

I mean I don't think any of the tributes wanted to be in these games, even the Careers. They survived the massacre ONCE and were promised a properous life. Now they are forced in the game again. Even the tributes from 1 and 2 were not "evil", they were just as pissed as any of the tributes were but the Careers get this "distrusting" color, for no reason. I mean why not stick with them rather than trusting underdogs?

Yes that is what I thought also, since it is obvious that they will show courtesy and mercy to one another. Whereas on the other hand, it’s more advantageous to make allies with tributes who are hesitant, but ultimately likeminded.

Yep they were already working for district 13. But it is fitting that she choose them as well. Perhaps she choose them because of their sincerity but yet they are vital for the upcoming war against Snow. She doesn’t need powerful skillful warriors on her side but someone she can trust and someone who isn’t a jerk. She doesn’t see the full picture but she makes the right choices nonetheless.

The force field is kind of a metaphor for Katniss’s effect on the Capitol. They put the force field up in response to Katniss shooting an arrow at them last year, but in the process drained resources from everything else that needed power. Similarly, the Capitol focused too much attention on neutralizing the way Katniss inspired the districts to rebel, and left cracks for the other victors to exploit.

It makes you realize that the fact that Katniss loved Rue and showed care and attention to a member of another District then reverence when she died is the root of the entire revolution. The games were designed to not only elevate the Capitol as superior but pit the Districts against each other by making members of those Districts fight amongst themselves. By caring for Rue, Katniss showed the other Districts that the tributes really hated fighting one another and could be unified in spirit. The fact that Plutarch so cleverly did it. There are other things he did in the books that weren't shown in the films. Gave them the tools and everything they needed right under Snow's nose. LOL. The tributes that were part of the rebellion job to act like their playing their part in the games but make sure at all cost Katniss and Peeta survived. Until they escaped.
And since the books are Katniss P.O.V. You don't know about ANY of this. As Katniss isn't aware of it. So you don't fully trust other tributes either like her until you learn about it through her. Like she has no trust in Johanna at all. Though the way she acts...you can't blame Katniss. Effie gave Finnick a gold piece to wear to show Katniss....'you can trust me. As he is an ally.' Basically because she wouldn't have trust him otherwise....and in the books District 4 is a Career District. Makes harder too. The first start is Finnick saving Peeta....
As without Peeta...Katniss wouldn't be part of the rebellion.

She also mentored Finnick Odair and other winners of District 4, a Career district and the district with the most victors after District 1 and 2. However, she was not a sociopath and got attached to Finnick and victor Annie Cresta like a mother. That's why she volunteered for Annie who became mentally unbalanced after her Games. Finnick also loved her like a mother figure and did his best to protect her in the Second Quater Quell. 12's actually were arguably FUCKED over. because any lifeskill job was AFTER turning 18. Students had to be in classes. So none of the 12ers actually had proper educations in anything usually. Unless they were criminal. Even then. 7's were used to swinging axes. 4 used to nets and fishermen tools like Tridents. 3's used to electronics.

I just realized this scene was the tributes who were part of the rebel victors auditioning Katniss to see if she was smart and strong enough to be worth their sacrifice. They wanted to see if she was able to understand the weaknesses in their prison and had the actual skills to have a chance at survival. That was why wiress and bettee were happy not stunned and why Mags was proud because Katiness while coarse had the gentleness, and ability to see them as useful and not just find them weak, empathy, quick thinking, and survival instincts that their faction needed.

To anyone wondering why Wiress seems a bit weird. If I remember correctly she got it at her games. At the last 2 tributes alive at her time. She battled against a strong opponent but she won using electricity + force field. But she was hit by a weapon and was electrocuted (i think both in the head). Wiress (the winner) was taken out from the arena unconcious. She was resuscitated and it was showing she was damaged mentally. Before these happened, Wiress was actually VERY smart, quick thinker, and a sneaky tribute.
I think her having damaged mentally is enough for the capitol to not give her punishments for using the force field to win (Unlike Haymitch's, his family was killed).
(Feel free to correct me 😊)

Yeah. Haymitch used the force field to win (when Haymitch and one of his district partner parted ways, he discovered the force field, and also anything thrown at it would bounce back).
At the final battle, Haymitch was trying his best to make his opponent throw the axe.
Any win using the force field is considered as an insult by the capital.
Having no loved ones, that's one of the reasons Haymitch is ALCOHOLIC.
Another reason is that every year after the 2nd Quarter Quell, he has to coach 2 tributes every year (51-73), totaling 46 tributes died in his guidance.
The 74th hunger games gives Haymitch a little hope because of Katniss and Peeta that is why you can actually see in the movie that Haymitch is becoming less alcoholic.
I hope they make Haymitch games a movie as well. It would be interesting since it's the 2nd Quarter Quell.

I think this was actually a fan theory. The way Wiress won her games isn’t specified anywhere. Unfortunately for a Wiress stan like me. But this sounds like Christian Bianco, the TH-camr who makes headcanon Arena videos, who came up with this theory.
But really, I don’t think she has brain damage. That usually affects intelligence and other aspects. And Wiress is clearly still highly intelligent. And in the books Betee refers to her as such and even “intuitive”, that she can sense things before anyone else.
I think that Wiress is just a little quirky, or eccentric. Perhaps she’s even portrays high functioning Autism. At least, that what it seems to me. Plus the added trauma and PTSD from her past Games and the QQ, could exacerbate it.

It levels the field against aggressive competitors since she has a weapon that shoots far and with good accuracy. Is really interesting to see how the games technology evolved from the 10th games until the 75th. From being put inside cages, with no food nor beds an only a vetenarian to help the injured. Having to perform tricks for the public to give you some food. (The audience that wasn't Sejanus that is). Some of them even starting the games with some disease. And then there's this healthy tributes that sleep in hotel suites, have a preparation team, go to feasts and are given enhanced weapons and gear so they can give a good performance for the whole country to see. Makes me wonder what would have happened with Coryo if Crassus and Casca Highbottom didn't invented the games. But then again id that had been the case we wouldn't have the books.

I always found the scene of Katniss hanging the dummy of Seneca Crane not to mean that she is the reason he’s dead because he crossed her, it’s more along the lines of “nobody is safe under the rule of President Snow, not even you. You’re just late to seeing it.” Because Seneca Crane was Head Gamemaker, one of the highest positions in the capital, a position of prestige and power, and if he could very well be murdered for making a mistake, then his being of a Capital Citizen made no difference. He still died in the same way many people in the districts have died since the beginning.
Theyre all the same in death, and under Snow, they’ll all die to him eventually, no matter who you are or what your social status is.
Plutarch was the one who told her of Seneca Crane’s demise and in a subtle way made his allegiance known. And him watching her do this probably solidified that she was the perfect person to be the Mockingjay.
(I might not be remembering correctly but the Head Gamemaker is usually different each year or changed after they mess up, but their fates aren’t public knowledge so Katniss putting it in their faces that she knows what happened to him startled the other gamemakers because nobody should know about it.)

In the book the scene is so more satisfying, like Katnis just goes to the trap/survival teacher (bc yeah, there are teacher for each position) who is glad to see she still remember what he taught to her. Then she met the ninfos who are drawing with colours, and betee and (don't remember the name) are more crazy, more out, oh, as well as meeting Mags. The scene with Haymitch is exactly the same, but there's a lack of vitality, of feeling. The whole piece is the book is more ironic, vibrant, here (as well in the rest of the movie) everything looks so dull

    • @TheMrMayo
      @TheMrMayo ปีที่แล้ว +25

To be fair, the book allowed the readers imagination to bring that imagery together, which is where the fun in reading comes in. This scene being dull, however, would fit with a group of tributes being forced back into a death pit while being judged. I'd be dull if I knew I had to do this again after barely surviving my last one.
In a literature perspective, I agree with you that the movie didn't make the scenes as satisfying as the book interpreted.
In a movie perspective, it's much harder to give that same purpose to the viewer when some of them probably hadn't read the book (or used the book as a reference).

      @SystemofEleven ปีที่แล้ว +54

"When being chased by a wild animal, you don't have to outrun the animal, you just have to outrun your slowest companion." Katniss at this point has absolutely defined herself as the person who will never, ever leave anyone behind. And she chose the slowest, weakest person in the group to be a companion. This puts her at (extra) risk, and by extension risks her entire team. The bonus pointy stick that is Finnick doesn't outweigh the reduced odds of survival in this scenario. And that's what everyone aside from Katniss is focusing on: surviving an arena full of experienced and (sometimes literally) bloodthirsty killers.

@@SystemofEleven Mags might also be one of the smartest and most practically savvy people in the room. Haymitch mentioned that the top causes of death are dehydration, hunger, infection, and other ailments. And how did she win her own games at age 16? Through sheer survival skills.
With others, it's about running from the animals. WIth Mags, it's about not letting the animals know you are there at all. I think Katniss saw qualities and factors in Mags that influences their chances of survival in ways that balances out her frailty.
Lastly, if Katniss brings Mags into the group, she creates a solidarity among her allies that otherwise would not exist. A group of "strong" people might throw each other under the bus under extreme duress, even if they are good, loyal people in normal circumstances. But if they are ALL invested in protecting Mags, if unifies them in ways their enemies cannot replicate, and that makes them strong.
Its why Katniss's posse wins out: Katniss picks the knowledgeable, savvy team players and gives them something precious to rally around. Her adversaries picked solo predators out for individual survival.

Some people said Peeta was a jerk for reacting to Mags’ name like this (especially considering she eventually sacrifices herself to save them, particularly him), but I think in the movie’s context Peeta’s reaction at this point in time makes perfect sense. When Haymitch was giving them an overview of the other victors, they identified Mags as Finnick’s weakness and agreed that if he tried to protect her, he would be exposed. Now Katniss wanted to put herself in that situation. Peeta knew very well that Katniss would never want to leave Mags in harm’s way and save herself if it came down to that, and since his priority is to save Katniss, this makes his job harder. So of course he was frustrated.
