- Hey babes! I am so excited about this video and am pleased to welcome Jerry!
One year ago, Fourth of July weekend 2023, we kick started our home improvements. We knew that we didn’t want to demo anything and make it as sustainable as possible. In a few years we plan to renovate our kitchens and bathrooms, so we didn’t want to add things in that we would rip out (and end up in a landfill). We decided to lean into our design and aesthetic challenges, using the home’s existing materials painted tiles, and get to work!
We painted tiles, cabinets and even the floors! We did change out a few dated sinks but made sure to purchase things that we would use in our future renovation.
I’m really proud of our creativity when it came to problem solving. There were many challenges along the way. Some sore backs the next morning too!
We have worked consistently on home improvements every weekend and some DIY staycations. We didn’t give up because we know that with some great home furnishings, a little paint, changing out a few things and lots of love, we could create a home that we are proud of.
The more time we spend here, the more challenging it was to leave on Monday mornings. We are now committed to making this our full-time home, leaving New York City behind us-well not quite ;) We still love the city and will be working there through the week.
In this video I share some of the befores and afters. I documented so much but wanted to make sure this video wasn’t too long! I hope you enjoy it! I think our home is evidence that there is so much power in painting, decorating, changing some fixtures, and highly selective furnishings. This is what I call a true “no reno” renovation.

Your house and property is lovely! I like that they you haven't done extensive renovations, the house has those good 1950's bones and looks so good without spending a fortune.

Yes Karen we love her so much! She gives back to us over and over again, and I enjoyed honoring her good bones and giving her a new wardrobe. I honestly feel like our house was happy when we arrived! Kind of funny but also true-also could be that I’m just a sentimental soul as well 🥰

I'm curious to how you went about planning the upgrades, where you started first, how things veered from the plans and did you have a rough estimate of the time involved. What I am not curious about is how much love went into this project. Its very palpable and warm. So beautiful!!!❤
Ohmygosh I have some stories! It was 50/50 on desired outcome vs reality 🤣 Much is this was new for us-uhhh me! I’ll have to make a sort or a post detailing them! Good question!!!

I love how you kept everything simple. It's nice to see a simple realistic house that the majority of us have! Also the peace of the garden is more important. By the way ticks are in the grass and cling to legs and deer as they walk so it's better to have boots for your guests!😆
That you, luv! Yes simplicity is a must for my brain. I think a lot about many different things at once so a calm, serene environment is great medicine 🤍 Oooh I love the idea of having extra boots for guests haha like a collection of rubber rain boots or something (this is what I wear sometimes). It might be funny if they’re too big but good for a laugh 😂
@@ChristinaDiStefanoStudio I always thought ticks were in the trees too until I found a great guy on TH-cam who explains where they actually are and since then I make sure to keep grassy “ walking” areas mowed. Best wishes!
@@indieartlove8241 We keep everything mowed for sure and we got all the creepers that were spread out in the ground out. We haven’t had any issues with ticks on the property thankfully-but we don’t go back into the woods during the warmer months. It’s wild back there in terms of growth so they are sure to be back there. We did know about the grasses and were told that many times it’s the country mice that carry the smaller ticks! But also the deer of course. Either way we are cautious. He also told us that they can fall from the trees if they detect heat below them. Either way we are covering all the bases!!

Congrats you two it is just lovely! Do you have a little dock on the water and swim there? Bet the water would be fabulous. I fell in love with and bought my country home 26 years ago due in part to all the stunning stone walls and gardens. I used to canter my horse down this dirt road and would always slow to a walk just to gaze at the waterfront heritage log home and imagine living in it. I still wake every day awed by the beauty and am overcome with gratitude. Your country home and property is magical.

WOW! I can honestly say I’ve never seen a more warm & welcoming home. You & Jerry make a terrific team! What is it about a house built in the 50’s that holds more appeal (especially the way you transformed this home) than homes built today with “gourmet” kitchens & lavish baths? I’d take your kitchen & bathrooms any day! And the mud/laundry room, Swoon! The property is gorgeous. Jerry has done an excellent job landscaping & planting. It’s all very serene. An idea for your empty hall wall would be black and white or sepia toned framed photographs of friends and family who come to visit you at your cottage. You both did an amazing job.I love the calming colors and artwork and I would live there in a heartbeat!

Christina, Me encanta, so unique and so tasteful, that is why I enjoy your videos, this resonate with me a lot, I try my best to follow your designs "lessons" specially , in my case living in the mountains, and with a husband who likes a lot of more traditional decor, We are in the process to compromise his test a things and mine, which is a lot relate with nature, art and serene colors, we do meet in the middle, even sometimes my ideas are a bit more risky than his ha!, but we meet in the middle and create an space that is meaningful to both of us. Thank you, Nachi 😘 yes a glass of wine relaxing in the gardens sounds lovely! Jerry’s a good gardener, right?! He takes after his parents. His mom loved colorful flowers and his dad had incredible vegetable gardens.
I’m sure you and your husband will find your way with the design. Jerry and I can be very different too but over time we have started creating our own style that is a blend of the two of us. Just keep and open mind and an open heart ❤️ baci baci bella!!!
Very nice! You could add couple baskets above the cabinets in laundry room w faux flowers to hide stuff (ex garden small tools). Also add a few bird baths to your planted flowers area! Best of luck!

Regarding the drapes. There are design rules/tips that you can follow but I have also found it depends on the room and the wall space/to ceiling height. I’ve seen some homes with very close, hugging the window placements and also those that extend way beyond the window. I lean somewhere in the middle over to hugging.
I feel like English cottage style is a bit like this, hugging the windows, and I’ve gained an appreciation for this-but it can make the windows feel much smaller and can block out some of the light.
As for those that are really far out and extremely high, not my preference unless there is a valence or sheers in the middle section to fill in that big gaping wall space between the rod and the top of the window frame. Looks a bit unfinished with a big empty gap there (IMO of course), while people like that! It looks off to me when there’s a big gap, which I think is why I opt for somewhere in the middle. Also a lot is dependent on the window and its placement as well as what’s happening in the surrounding areas. Sometimes it works with the overall decor (HUB to create harmony).
In our house we had some issues with what what behind the walls-a lot of concrete that was either impossible to screw into without tearing up the walls, as well as window placement close to the corner of a room/end of the wall. That said we had to make adjustments and do what we could with what we have.
Also I learned to let things go a bit and not be too black and white about the rules. They are there as a springboard but I’m open to figuring out new ways if needed! All and all, I feel each space is unique and it depends on the feeling one is going for. Hope that helps 🤗

I have low ceilings so I don't know the effect with high ceilings, but I think I lean more towards hanging high without a valance or so. Perhaps because I like more clean lines, and the communication of the gap with other clean lines in the room. But that is only how it works in my head, and I would have to see it first irl. I also can see the value of what you describe as a designer. That said, I think that a valance adds to a more classical or cottage like style than my esthetic. Although I love to see these styles on IG and TH-cam. Seeing how people make their own choices to make a lovely home, in their own style.
Sure!! You can pull those two suggestions off without the cottage feel and go clean lines. I’m not a cottage core person myself so if I did it, then it would have a more modern, minimal look-also it would be a this or that situation-both would look too fussy! 😉

Yes of course! It’s from Restoration Hardware. It’s the white linen track arm sofa. We got it with the bench seat so it’s one long piece. It is comfortable! It was an investment but it’s our forever sofa-I can tell 🤍

Yes I will definitely address the drapes in another video as it’s a bit complex. I touch on it in the Decorate with the 5 Senses video but didn’t go into specifics, just what I think must be added if someone pulls the rods all the way up-yet the widow frame is several inches below. An extreme gap is not attractive to me and has an unfinished look.
This is why I avoid going all the way up. I try to find somewhere in the middle so there’s a similar amount of space in between the rod and ceiling/rod and top of window. I feel it looks best when it’s balanced in the middle UNLESS using a sheer or a valance to hide the “bald spot.”
My eye gets drawn to that almost immediately when I walk into a room with a big gap 🙃 There are much more important focoso points to me!
This is why it’s a little more nuanced than a general rule. Hope that helps! I have a lot of ideas for shorts regarding this so stay tuned. I’ll work on them this weekend 🤗

If I may, if you will move your curtains up to your ceiling lines it will make your room more attractive. And elevate the room because it makes your ceiling height look taller.
Thanks Bambi for your feedback. I know there are decorators that attest to this as a general rule across the board but I think it’s case by case. I did explain this in a previous video but I’m happy to explain here too.
With respect to this house, we have some structural issues behind the wall in the dining room that prevent drilling the rod in higher-it’s concrete and wasn’t worth tearing up the wall when we plan to replace the windows next year.
That being said, I do not think the rod should go up to the ceiling in every house. It depends on the ceiling to upper window space. I don’t like a large gap there and find it distracting. This is definitely not for everyone but it works for me!
