@jeremyhire5516 Based on my quick research to determine air dates, Picard's initial encounter with Hugh happened BEFORE his torture by Gul Madred...so I think that Picard's rage at the Borg and what they were attempting to do in "Star Trek: First Contact" wasn't solely about his experiences with assimilation & his involvement with what happened at Wolf 359. Honestly, part of me wonders if Picard subconsciously bundles all of his experiences with a foreign power violating his body and mind together as one huge psychic wound...but the Borg are the one he can fight back against without being worse than Ben Maxwell with his one-ship war against the Cardassians.
Star Trek has had its ups and downs throughout its history. I feel that overall this has been a great franchise, and that the good parts outweigh the the bad parts. I've been a Star Trek fan since the 70s when the original series was syndicated. I will definitely keep going.
For me "The Motion Picture" is more related to 2001 than Star Wars. And I think it's actually a good thing because if it had been more action then Star Trek wouldn't have been different from Star Wars.

That's one thing Star Trek Enterprise excelled at. They made their time period work, and then in the mirror universe episode they made the old TOS era ship seem even better. Not to mention all the little nods where they explained things in the future like why there's 2 kinds of Klingons.
I can remember seeing the design for the Enterprise D and hating it. I think I missed the first 5 episodes before I actually sat down and watched it! I love it now!
" Picard" is just a bored man in outer space. " Hey , Riker, ........remember me?, Jean -Luc, why your old captain !!". " Oh no,.....hes back!!, .......lock the door Deana, that old guy is back !!."
For me, it's The Voyage Home. The Enterprise is gone! The original bridge crew is intact, however. We get to see the improvisational skills of the Star Fleet officers in operating a commandeered Klingon Bird of Prey. AND they have to use it to time travel! Magnificent!:)
In Pathfinder, I have mentioned this in other TH-cam videos, Robert Duncan McNeill should have improved and blurted out, "I love you, Dad, and I miss you very much."
Okay, I was around 30 when Next Gen started, and I can guarantee you that there were no Star Trek fans that had never seen the original series. NONE. TOS had been playing in reruns for nearly two decades by then. If you were too young to have seen it in its first run, you had spent afternoons after school watching it. If you were into ST at all, you knew TOS. There simply wasn't any way to avoid it if you were a science fiction fan.
Actually im a big Trek fan and i cant do the TOS the look is so dated its due to the film style coloring etc . so while the reboot movies helped it still is just rough in look to me for some reason .
@@rhocat362 The comment says that there were NO ST fans at that time who hadn't seen TOS. I was a fan then, and I hadn't seen it, and I am sure I am not the only one, so the statement is wrong. Period. It doesn't matter how old I was.
Since this was done 2 years ago, you didn't get to see the best reward in Star Trek: Picard Season 3, where the entire TNG cast came back together on the Enterprise!!! Also, Lower Decks got even better with tons of guest stars from previous Trek incarnations!!
I really like that voyager episode that showed tuvok's life, and showed him working for captain Sulu. I didn't even watched the original series but I was like "THATS SULU! HE BECAME A CAPTAIN? OH MY GOD TUVOK IS SO OLD"
Other than all the in-jokes on Trials and Tribble-ations (Lucsly and Dulmur from Temporal Investigations !) , one thing that magnificently made it work was finding Charlie Brill to play the older Arne Darvin (spotted at a lunch counter while they were talking about the script - - can't get much more Hollywood than that!)
Lower Decks is an absolute blast to watch. Yes, Star Trek has had their silly episodes every now and again (Take Me Out to the Holosuite and such) but I haven't had so much fun watching Star Trek before. It's such a refreshing series that knows it's absurd and just runs with it.
Naw, Pathfinder isn't like a lost TNG episode - I mean, Troi has a clear role throughout the episode and directly applies her skills with direction and purpose. That *never* happened with a TNG script. ;)
Re-watching (umpteenth time) TNG. Am on season 5 and the best thing I can say about season 3 is that Dr Crusher is back and that "other Dr" was short lived.
Lower Decks was a big surprise for me. After the trailer i thought it would be shit, watched episode 1 and was more or less convinced my thoughts after the trailer were right. Episode 2 was great and it got better and better. Love the show.
I felt the same way you did. This would not be a good show. I watched the first episode, I didn't like it, and I haven't seen any more. After seeing what you wrote here I might give it another chance. I hope it gets better as you say it does.
Same, my only issue is to much focus on Mariner, less attention paid to the other cast & the "O'Brien must suffer" snitchk that happens to Bolimer all the time, give the dude a break and send Beckett Mariner to counseling
Absolutely brilliant insights.. watching ST since the early seventies and you guys expand my experience even more.. appreciating the Franchise even more...

On October 19th, 1982, I was waiting to watch Star Trek on a syndicated tv station from New York State as I lived in Montreal. It was a late night showing, and before the show started there was an introduction to the episode, Space Seed, by William Shatner. He was taking about the new movie that was coming out The Wrath of Khan. It was very unexpected to see him telling us about the new movie, but if I remember right there was a lot of shit for doing it. It was long ago so forgive me if I got some details wrong, but I would love you guys to find the original intro by Shatner. Live long and prosper.
I was a huge TNG fan. And loved the movies. I never really appreciated First Contact until after I came home from my first combat tour and actually got to know my grandpa and his experience as a POW in Japan. I only watched First Contact once after he passed. And I don’t know if I can ever bring myself to watch it again. “The line must be drawn HERE! And I, will make them pay, for what they have done!!!!” I don’t hate the Japanese and neither did Grandpa. He was able to let his feelings go. But that line. And how I could see Grandpa in Stewart. Really hits me like a brick.
In "The Trouble with Tribbles", and subsequently the Star Trek 25 Year Anniversary tribute episode of DS9, Trials and Tribulations" there was no mention of Sulu. If anyone ever wonders why, it is because he (or rather George Takei) was on Earth in the mid 1960s assisting the US Army Special Forces as a Captain in the South Vietnam Army Special Forces by appearing in a little John Wayne movie titled "The Green Berets". I'm pretty sure everyone here already knew that. Pretty sure. But just in case there are those who didn't, I wanted them to know where he was and what he was doing. It was kind of ironic because both characters held the same level of rank symbolically within the hierarchy of Naval VS Army officer ranks, and he made "Captain" far sooner than anyone else from the TOS crew.... yeah, I know, not the same thing. I wonder if that influenced his decades long crusade for a Captain Sulu shoshow... Kekekek
Bear with me. Back in the 90s rave scene in England I use to say to my dad listen to this, it's amazing, dad said "I heard that originally in the 60s." I so get the throw backs to classic Star Trek now in newer shows because people tell me about certain episodes and I'm like "I remember watching that episode in the 80s".
Nepenthe won me over by having Troi and Riker together. But it was made all the more extraordinary when the name Kestra was first spoken on-screen. I was done. Wonderful.
TNG is my Star Trek. I was born in 1981 and I became a full blown Trekkie when TNG aired. It’s the one I’ve watched the most and know the most about. I like the others but Picard will always be my Captain 😎
I want to say the thing with Seven... I think the Hansens went looking for the Borg after Q Who/ Best of Both Worlds. You think it doesn't line up, but don't forget that children in the Borg grow up faster to become mature drones, so Seven was likely younger than she looked. That's my headcanon anyways.
1:13 I was at a Trek convention in the 90's that had the big three: Shatner, Nimoy and Kelley. I remember thinking that D. Kelley seemed like such a nice guy. I didn't interact with him, but he spoke with such passion and compassion, I couldn't help but notice. (I sometimes wonder if anyone had a camcorder...I would like to see that convention again.)
"Regeneration" was anxiety-inducing! It wasn't till the second borg was reviled that I noticed what they dug up and very quickly realized how they got there. From that time I was waiting for the jump scare!
8:07 I saw both these movies opening weekend in the theaters when they came out and they were both huge successes to us of the time period. I saw the original Star Wars in the theater as it was named when it first came out and it was great. I didn't have as much of a connection as Trek gave me. I wanted to be Spock more than I wanted to be Luke or Han.
If this video was made today - Nepenthe might not even be mentioned because - Holy cow - Picard Season 3 - we the fans get the TNG reunion plus so much more.
"Regeneration" also explains why the Borg were tearing up the Neutral Zone in the TNG S1 Finale. If people recall, they retroactively made those missing outposts the fault of the Borg come "Q Who?", when Data remarked that the damage on J25 matched that of those missing outposts.
This movie had two good moments there at the end. The first one is when Spock tells Admiral Cartwright to “arrest yourself” and shows up with Valeris in tow; Cartwright knows the gig is up. The second is when the Klingon woman (I forgot the name) tells Kirk, “You’ve restored my faith in humanity”, and Kirk tells her, “and you’ve restored my son’s.”
I sometimes wonder what Star Trek would be today if The Motion Picture were better. TMP was not bad, the problem was that they took a story that would have worked well as a small screen episode and squandered the budget and amazing visual effects to make it into a movie. Wrath of Khan was a great antidote to that, but if TMP had been done better, future Star Treks could have potentially had a much bigger budget. Would that have made it better? I don't know. But it's interesting to consider.
4:27 "hey fans we know we completely ruined all of trek established Canon and tone but hey we bought back a character are you happy? How about we do it again? No?"
6:01 - That episode "Regeneration" can also help explain the probing the Borg did when Picard and the Romulans where investigating the disappearance of several of there starbases along the neutral zone.
NEPENTHE was actually my favorite episode of season 1. Or, one of my favorites. It was a nice way to take a break and catch the breath from the momentum of the previous and following episodes.
I can definitely agree with that, though I think I do agree with Sean that they were a little overused in Voyager. It was a bit disappointing for me when the series finale featured the Borg when the season 6/7 crossover had just done the same thing. Personally, I would love to have seen a return to "Caretaker", in the same way that TNG made a return to "Encounter at Farpoint".
And now there is Picard Season 3. I didn't much care for the first two seasons, but this one is a loveletter to the TNG Era, with characters and plot points from all the shows around late 90's.
First, I really don’t understand how you guys at WatchCulture can love The Motion Picture so much. It’s soooo boring. I’ve never been able to watch it the whole way through because I always fall asleep lol. It doesn’t help that I have ADD, but any movie that has a crying Spock obviously doesn’t understand the original series show. About the only good things about it are the music (later recycled for Next Generation), and it’s introduction of ‘ship porn’ in the lengthy view of the Enterprise (the footage was later reused but cut waayyy down in Wrath of Khan) Second, thank you for ranking Lower Decks so high. After the decade of dismal disappointments (the Abrams movies, Discovery, and Picard), I lamented that the days of good Star Trek were over and gone. When Lower Decks came out, I thought “that’s it, we now have cartoons instead of decent Trek, we’ve returned to the Dark Age of the 1970s”. Then my sister made me watch the first episode. I fell in love with it. For a while, I thought it was hilarious that the only good Trek was a cartoon Third, I know you made this video before Strange New Worlds came out, but it should definitely be on this list. I feel that SNW is a thank you to all the fans who have been waiting for serious, good Star Trek since Star Trek Insurrection (Nemesis was such a letdown, so abysmal, that I personally refuse to acknowledge it). The fact that Pike and Spock were on Discovery first was, I think, kind of an appetizer. For people disappointed by Discovery, it was kind of like the people behind the show were telling us “just wait, good things are around the corner”. SNW has the heart of the original series, and often the humor, but isn’t afraid to address serious issues. It is the Star Trek long-time fans deserve
I liked the way Yar died in "Skin of Evil." She went out like a red shirt, and her death wasn't the resolution to the episode. Also, I could have sworn Sela shows up at the end of "The Mind's Eye." And "Lower Decks" (the TNG episode) was a reward because of its tie-in to "The First Order." We also had Star Trek novels between the cancellation of the original series (which was in syndication) and the first movie.
I never saw Yar's original death as "meaningless." She died trying to save the life of her friend--Troi. Sure she didn't save the day, but that doesn't delete the fact she was there trying. The one who gets a "meaningless" death is Garrett, who gets robbed of her great contribution to the Federation. We have so few women captains, I always regreted Garrett being yet another in a long line of folks dying with something stuck in their foreheads (which was a trend for a while there in TNG) instead of the great unifier for the Federation/Klingons.
FYI, Shatner actually bred Tennessee Walking Horses and I believe those were his horses in that scene. I loved the show-offy bit of walking the horse sideways, as that is not an easy maneuver.
Picard was a combination of alot of good ideas with next to no direction and a dreadful plot. For example, a possible origin story for the borg: Good idea! The romulan star explosion event and the evacuation story and how it changed the alpha quadrant (and spawned the abrahmsverse) Good idea! Picking up the loose thread of data's death and possible survival in B4 and how his greatest fear of an enslaved android race being created in the federation came to fruition, Good idea! Brining back jeri ryan as the nexus point and subsequent second lead character in the story, Excellent idea! Giving stewart total creative control and then attempting to cobble all of these ideas together in one season with no expectations of there being a season 2 let alone three and thus having no room for flow or natural story progression as in past ST series? A dreadful horrible decision.
I always liked how Trials and Tribblations treated the tech/aesthetic differences between TOS and DS9. They didn’t redress sets or update things to be more contemporary, they just went with “this is how this era was” and wrote a fun story around it.

You love the "D" now, eh? SORRY, I couldn't resist that pun, I'll see myself out.
We all hated it at first...except for Data
10:18 but you got to admit, the last season of Picard was like a TNG reunion
For me, it's The Voyage Home. The Enterprise is gone! The original bridge crew is intact, however. We get to see the improvisational skills of the Star Fleet officers in operating a commandeered Klingon Bird of Prey. AND they have to use it to time travel! Magnificent!:)
"My NBs." Watched not a second more after that!
I think this video in particular highlights your ability to balance fandom and scholarship. Keep it up.
And when First Contact came out, Trek fans were pissed that the Borg were an ant hill by introducing the Borg Queen, now fans love it
In Pathfinder, I have mentioned this in other TH-cam videos, Robert Duncan McNeill should have improved and blurted out, "I love you, Dad, and I miss you very much."
While I did catch the occasional TOS episode in syndication, for the most part I grew up on the films
I grew up on TNG, and it wasn't until later on that I learned there was another series, so you are wrong.
@@DCeandreIf you grew up on Nex Gen, then you were too young to get it.
OH MY GOD TUVOK IS SO OLD"
It is understatement to say “Thank You, but nonetheless’Thank You’
For this fine compilation. May you be free of any “Tribulations” !
…
Other than all the in-jokes on Trials and Tribble-ations (Lucsly and Dulmur from Temporal Investigations !) , one thing that magnificently made it work was finding Charlie Brill to play the older Arne Darvin (spotted at a lunch counter while they were talking about the script - - can't get much more Hollywood than that!)
In Trials and Tribulations my favorite part is when they asked Worf “why did Klingons look like that?” Worf: We don’t talk about that 😂😂
That's a good one but the scene that always makes me laugh is at the end when Quark has the Tribble on his head and the look on his face
Lower Decks is an absolute blast to watch. Yes, Star Trek has had their silly episodes every now and again (Take Me Out to the Holosuite and such) but I haven't had so much fun watching Star Trek before. It's such a refreshing series that knows it's absurd and just runs with it.
7:33 Hey! It's Ug from Salute Your Shorts
You just blew my mind. Camp anawana we hold you in our hearts

@@j-bob_oreo Yea. I know. Just trying to forget that she had a better send off on LA Law. :-)
The first season tried too hard to be funny - it's calmed down in season 2 and I'm loving it!
@@JohnnyWednesday I'm the opposite way, I enjoyed 1st season but got highly annoyed with season 2
@@robertszekely8686 Cannon . the writting is top level . and it easily take its own spot in the trek series .
Absolutely brilliant insights.. watching ST since the early seventies and you guys expand my experience even more.. appreciating the Franchise even more...
Sean, your t shirt just wins. It’s so good that I am praising something from Star Trek V. Also you did an incredible job on Trek for Ukraine
Thank You TrekCulture.....brought back great memories of our cable access show "Ten Forward". I Agree with your picks.....we had the pleasure of meeting alot of people, and alot of fans......stay well.....
Season 3 of Picard is the best love letter to fans of TNG.
This has been a great episode Sean. I think it's the best i've seen yet. Good job!
i think the only they they missed was Q and his evolving character throughout Star Trek

Fantastic list! Off to watch a few of these now!
Sean, so much love for the fact you acknowledged the enbies! 🤗❤️
Just waiting for that shirt to come into play, and BOY, did you not disappoint!!!! 🤪
Deforest Kelley: Dammit Jim, I’m a doctor not a critic.
Can't really argue with these picks, BUT definitely think Prodigy's Kobayashi deserves an honourable mention
I was done. Wonderful.
how could you not have the remake of balance of terror from star trek strange new worlds season one, that was a great episode.
My favorite line was, "call me Jim".
TNG is my Star Trek. I was born in 1981 and I became a full blown Trekkie when TNG aired. It’s the one I’ve watched the most and know the most about. I like the others but Picard will always be my Captain 😎
Fabulous list, I didn't cry, you did...
Riker = Dad Model in that epsoide :D I loved it !!! and would love to see more - aka an Riker TV show
1:13 I was at a Trek convention in the 90's that had the big three: Shatner, Nimoy and Kelley. I remember thinking that D. Kelley seemed like such a nice guy. I didn't interact with him, but he spoke with such passion and compassion, I couldn't help but notice. (I sometimes wonder if anyone had a camcorder...I would like to see that convention again.)
Love your pick for no.1
But remember we do not discuss it with outsiders
How would Groucho Marx have put it? "If Lower Decks is a gift it's a pity they didn't keep the receipt!"
How about doing a list about the best season 1's in Star Trek, that would make for some interesting discussion.
Ds9. It still has its rough spots but as far as season ones go, it's the best
I'd go...
1. ToS
2. Lower Decks
3. Discovery
4. TAS
5. Picard
6. DS9
7. Voyager
8. TNG
Haven't started Prodigy yet.
DS9!!!!!😊
I loved the part where Picard follows Kirk into the bedroom/barn and Picard says, "This is not your bedroom."
"My enbies..."
Thank you Sean.
"Regeneration" was anxiety-inducing! It wasn't till the second borg was reviled that I noticed what they dug up and very quickly realized how they got there.
From that time I was waiting for the jump scare!
The thing you can tell about Lower desk is that it is written by Star Trek fans.
I love Enterprise, Voyager and DS9 before the original and TNG. Discovery and Picard are still in the air....
"Regeneration" also explains why the Borg were tearing up the Neutral Zone in the TNG S1 Finale. If people recall, they retroactively made those missing outposts the fault of the Borg come "Q Who?", when Data remarked that the damage on J25 matched that of those missing outposts.
Comment for the YT Continuum. Love what you all do! Thank you!
I've always enjoyed Undiscovered Country as an excellent film that concludes the original series movies. It's my go-to movie. :-D
@@williamsquires3070 couldn’t agree more!
I think the reason why Troi works so well in Picard is that they let her real personality let loose.
She always had the ability but they wrote badly for her for the most part. It's like back then they didn't have the ability to write for women.
I'm here for Sean🥰...the Star Trek content is bonus!😉😁🍻🖖
"Frakes is everyone's dad".... Given how horny Riker was in TNG, it's likely he IS everyone's dad
they still havent found a cure for KHG / Kirk Herpes Galacticus ?
Trials and Tribulations was the best.
"And the lows"
Threshold: "Am I a joke to you?"
Yes Threshold. You are.
Damn it, just let me forget! >
Maybe it's low hanging fruit or something, but I was genuinely surprised Threshold wasn't mentioned when brining up Voyagers low points.
Denise is up for it! She said so at Pensacon!
Can we get a video dedicated to Phase II ?
Lower Decks has blown my expectations with every episode of season 3 so far. Where are your guys' Ups and Downs series for it?!
Discovery is not that you do not want to watch. But more as the fact you have to pay to watch!
Lower Decks is amazing and easily the most fun trek to watch
NEPENTHE was actually my favorite episode of season 1. Or, one of my favorites. It was a nice way to take a break and catch the breath from the momentum of the previous and following episodes.
That Picard/Kirk scene had me crying a little first time I saw them together !
I disagree with the concept that 'the teeth were taken from the borg'. I think Voyager made it so the federation grown their own teeth instead.
Why just the teeth an not the whole skull?
I watched this 1 year after. I wish it were done after STPS3. It was a for sure reward for long time watchers, in an epic way.
Regeneration = so much yes. Loved the tie together.
Thought I was not gonna like Lower Decks. Now I'm going crazy waiting for more.
And now there is Picard Season 3. I didn't much care for the first two seasons, but this one is a loveletter to the TNG Era, with characters and plot points from all the shows around late 90's.
lovely episode man. thanks
About the only good things about it are the music (later recycled for Next Generation), and it’s introduction of ‘ship porn’ in the lengthy view of the Enterprise (the footage was later reused but cut waayyy down in Wrath of Khan)
Second, thank you for ranking Lower Decks so high. For a while, I thought it was hilarious that the only good Trek was a cartoon
Third, I know you made this video before Strange New Worlds came out, but it should definitely be on this list.
Generations: I enjoyed the horse riding sequence best. Especially since both actors actually know how to ride.
