  • It gets more and more difficult to find a good source for ammonium nitrate in the EU. This video provides one.
    Video category:
Beginner level - Not dangerous and no special equipment needed.
Intermediate level - Dangerous or some special equipment needed.
Expert level - Very dangerous or special equipment needed.

A much better approach is to dissolve the double salt fertilizer in water. Once it's dissolved, the double salt separates into ammonium nitrate and ammonium sulfate in solution (no longer a double-salt). You find out how much ammonium sulfate is in the fertilizer and then react it with calcium nitrate which will cause a double replacement reaction between calcium nitrate and ammonium sulfate to form ammonium nitrate and calcium sulfate. If you were precise with your measurements you should end up with a solution that contains a ton of ammonium nitrate with some calcium sulfate in it. 1L of room temperature distilled water can dissolve only 2.55g calcium sulfate and 2.34g at 80C. And 1L of room temperature distilled water can dissolve 1920g ammonium nitrate and 7400g at 80C (pretty crazy solubility). Meaning once calcium nitrate and ammonium sulfate are mixed you get insoluble in water calcium sulfate that is a huge pain to filter but I bet it can be done with a multilayer cheesecloth and some hard work and then a gravity or vacuum filtration to remove all calcium sulfate till you get a clear solution, you then just evaporate the water off and boom you get lots of ammonium nitrate

Great video, keep it up! Even actual Kalkammonsalpeter (which is hard to get anyways) contains some sulfate nowadays which is kind of annoying. I think it's like 5 % sulfate because you need extra sulfur in the soil due to less air pollution than there was some decades ago.

That such substances are getting harder and harder to obtain, the fault of some idiots who were of the opinion that they had to nitrate all sorts of things and then blow up half the of the neighborhood forest. Of course, all of this would also be filmed and uploaded to TH-cam. In times of terror madness, it was only a matter of time before it was banned, see sulfuric acid in the EU.

btw is Ammonium Sulfate used in this video a special brand of product that already contains some portion of Ammonium Nitrate in it? Because getting AN just by distilling (relatively) pure ammonium sulfate without reacting with any nitric salts like calcium nitrate is impossible. You need to provide compounds for nitrate ions (KNO3, Ca(NO3)2) and ammonium ion from ammonium sulfate or ammonia water.

For making HNO3, why bother? Just put the NH4NO3/(NH4)2SO4 mixture in your flask or retort and add the H2SO4. The nitrate will react to make HNO3 and the sulfate will just sit there...and join the additional sulfate that's produced: 2NH4NO3 + H2SO4 ---> 2HNO3 + (NH4)2SO4.

It's not really that hard to get ammonium nitrate based fertilizer in EU at all, at least where I live. Even with restrictions, it seems many small resellers simply dont know about it and don't realize what it is other then a good fertilizer. It would be pretty damn hard to completely restrict its use even for domestic use as it's just an great fertilizer. It seems I can even order 600 kg big bags if I wanted to, no problem at all. I live in a country where the agro industry is massive so in the small agri shops that are everywhere in the agricultural towns, noone really thinks twice when you buy a 25 kg bag. The town I grew up in the local shop even repacked it in smaller bags under their own name to sell for domestic use. People use it legitimately to green their grass fields where they let horses, goats, sheep or cattle graze. I guess if you order a 25 kg bag and you live in the big city, that will raise some suspicion though.
