I see you, SalvoG, "holding back the tears." A good singer will do that, getting you all choked up. Now you see why we love and treasure Linda Ronstadt ❤
Look... she was flawless and peerless. When she sings a song about heartbreak, YOUR heart breaks. It's so palpable. I am so glad that this song got a second life on "The Last of Us." I am also glad that you covered it. Thank you. Now treat yourself to a listen to El Crucifico. You won't regret it!
Ms Ronstadt as you are beginning to see was the Queen of Rock, selling out arenas (arenas not venues nor clubs) in the 70s and up to when she stopped performing. The documentary "Sound of My Voice" details her life not just her performing. I would highly recommend watching for any fan of hers.
The emotive and performance quality of this song are of the chart. Linda was one of “the” voices in my teens. I really can’t find superlatives to encapsulate her ability.
"Love Has No Pride" was on the same album as Desperado and is another one of her melt you with her vocals songs. And powerful lyrics too. She's always epic.
Another great song from that same album is “Colorado” and “Everybody Loves a Winner”. “Sail Away” is a bright sounding sound, but actually talking about slavery
A friend of mine introduced me to Linda Ronstadt when she put Linda's "Don't Cry Now" album on the stereo in the spring of 74. Payday found me down at the local Big K thumbing through the Rs. When I checked out Linda's self titled album was accompaniing "Don't Cry Now". I couldn't resist those big brown eyes.
Yes, Linda doesn’t just sing - she lives within the song, and crafts every note to match the emotions in the lyrics. Welcome to the ranks of the first kind of man, per Willie Nelson: "There are two kinds of men in this world. Those with a crush on Linda Ronstadt and those who never heard of her."
Very well put in what I was trying to express is that she lives within the song and becomes the character so it’s very real to her and to us what she is singing that’s why it’s just not a performance. Karen Carpenter and Barbra Streisand are incredible singers, but you don’t get that emotional impact like you do with Linda Ronstadt because you believe her.
Linda Ronstadt has been my favorite singer for 50 years. This is an incredible song that still brings me to tears. Whats amazing about Linda’s voice is her ability to smoothly modulate the power of her voice. she blows through with intensity at those climatic places that sears into our souls and then goes right back to a a softer sound. she doesn’t need to keep belting, her ability to move within that range, and to go from soft to powerhouse for emotional reasons shows what an excellent singer she is.
Can’t believe this only made it to 25 on the charts. One of the most poignant, beautiful songs out there. The cry in her voice is heart wrenching in the most perfect way. I remember crying to this when it came out. Haunting. Bravo Linda, a perfect song.
Linda was right there in the thick of it. She was on a roll in the early 70's, living with JD Souther(You're Only Lonely) and having Glen Frey and Don Henley in her back-up band(Desperado). Then Glen and Don and JD went on to write The Best Of My Love and a few other Eagles classics while the Eagles soared and Linda found her solo audience. Jackson Brown was part of the gang as he wrote with Glen, his then roommate, Take It Easy. Big ole jumbled up stew of Folk, Country Rock.
One of the best songs about unrequited love that I've heart and what an amazing voice. 11 Emmy awards. Sadly, she retired in 2013 due to her Parkinson's Disease diagnosis, which affects her ability to control her voice.
Linda Ronstadt was my favorite as a teen in the 70's and this is one of my favorite songs ever. It still makes me feel the heartbreak of a first love vividly...
Kind of sad that it weren’t for that tv show episode, many young people wouldn’t know who Linda ronstadt is. Younger people these days just aren’t exposed to this older music in the instagram and tik tok worlds they live in. They live in a bubble of the autotune singers that are popular today, and know nothing of the amazing voices that were around 50 or more years ago, like Linda
I remember this song form its original release. Sadly, I admit I had forgotten about it until S1E3 of The Last of Us. But since then, I've rediscovered the song as well as the rest of Linda's catalogue. Similar situation with Glen Campbell. Naturally, I remember Wichita Lineman form its hayday, but when Glen passed, all his songs got "remembered", and I've seen so many great YT videos of his interviews and performances.
At 77 yrs. of age. I followed Linda's career since its beginning with great pleasure. She was broadcast on every musical variety show from the late sixties through the seventies. Absolute beautiful control of her wide ranging voice and able to sing any genre. Many great hits are in her anthology of discs. She brings back so many powerful memories of the past. db
Absolute icon of the unrequited love song. I first heard this in the old AM DJ days when there was no way to play it back or record it, and I stood in my kitchen folding diapers and crying. I'm 82 now, and astounded at how many of the TH-cam VJs have never heard of Linda Ronstadt. Well, by thee gosh, now you have!
This is my favorite song by her and you touched on all the reasons why I love this song. I just love how she can hold notes and then start a new line without taking a breath, all the while hitting different notes. She's just phenomenal. Thank you for this reaction!
My favorite female singer ever. This is my favorite of hers, one that wasn't as popular but it hit a nerve & became my crying/break up song. Heard it on TV one day, the hub was watching The Last of Us & I was in shock! Someone, whoever they are, brought this beautiful song back into play. And I thank them since I'm married 39 yrs next month & hadn't heard it in quite a while!
Oh my story is the same!! 💕 The tears I cried to this song!!! Hearing it again brings it all back. First love heartbreak, but still some sweetness attached.
Best line in a song that has a ton of great lyrics “I can’t say you hurt me cause you never let me near.” That’s like a shot through the heart every time I hear it!
What a classic, Salvo. I still get goosebumps when she uses her range. OMG. She’s in that top tier class of vocalist, with KC and Barbra. Just so powerful. Perfect reaction to a classy lady. Joe
@@88pjtink the companion piece to this, the book end is, “love has no pride“ a real heartbreaker as well. “And if you want me to beg, I’ll fall down on my knees, and ask you to come back, I’d be pleading for you to come back, Id beg for you to come back to me.“
Those beautiful harmonies when her voice rises and flows the verses together, is just so great. The walking bass line, the cambering brass. It takes you to a magical place. Every single time her voice rises above the rest of the song.
WHOA .... My mom played her over and over and OVEEER when I was growing up. All her music takes me back to being about 7 0r 8 yrs.old. Crazy!! I love memories created through music.
At the end that woman forced a note of her voice right through me into my soul and brought tears to my eyes, she made me feel the pain of her sadness in the song, she is a special human being. Have you seen her in trio her group with Dolly Parton and Emmylou Harris? Check out THE SWEETEST GIFT they siren you with that one, what a magic thing, Regards, Mark, Australia
Growing up in the 70’s one of my favorite albums favorite albums was her Living in the USA album. Love her rendition of Allison. Elvis Costello also has a version of it!!
So glad you played the original album version. I won’t add any of the accolades that are so aptly justified by all the comments, as it would be redundant. BUT, if you want to be really blown away of the talent that is Linda, search out all of the live versions of this song, on various broadcasts in the 70s when this came out. Most are the shortened version, but every single time live, she nails it, and it shows how effortlessly she makes vocal magic 🪄
This is my all time favorite song. You got it just right. It's the PERFECT execution of a great song. It just can't be done any better. I loved it when you reacted to those two violins in the chorus. To me they sound like they're crying. Then the harpsichord accents. And then the power in her voice at the end. You can just hear her screaming out her pain and anguish. This from a woman who I doubt ever suffered from unrequited love in her life. Just amazing.
Linda was just the best!!! She rates up there of my ATF female vocalists. Along with Streisand and Anne Wilson and Stevie of course. 😊 Loved your reaction! It does tug at the heart a bit.
This beautiful song was written by Gary White, bass player in Circus Maximus, a New York late-1960s band which included Jerry Jeff Walker. Linda Ronstadt caught Gary White’s performance of the song at a club and asked him if she could record it. I saw White perform it at Jerry Jeff Walker’s 44th birthday party in Austin. He said he didn’t know Linda Ronstadt until after he wrote the song, that he wrote it for Charlotte, who broke his heart.
I follwed her career since 1967 till her retirement in 2011, also enjoyed her two albums with Diolly Parton and Emmy Lou Harris (band name was Trio). "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight" is one of my all time favorites of hers.
Your reaction to Linda's incredible performance of this emotional and powerful song demonstrates what every listener who hears it feels. And that means, it no longer is merely a "song"... but rather, an experience. There are only a few singers on Earth who are able to achieve that... Thank you, Linda.
Amazing ! She was like 24 when this came out.... what a voice saw her live back in 2000 At the city park in Telluride Colorado she was with Bob Dylan of all people lol what a show
This song, in particular, reminds me so much of my childhood as my mother (RIP) had the album and I used to lay on the floor listening to it for hours. Also....all the guys had crushes on Linda Ronstadt back in the day.
I graduated high school in 1971 and I definitely have heard it and I still get chills to this day! Please review Someone to Lay Down Beside Me. There's a great You Tube video of her singing it and she has a red rose behind her ear. It's perfection.❤
I met her in 70 backstage where I had finally caught up with Bruce to see one of his shows but got there as he was about to do an encore. So he says come do this one with me. So I did. Everyone loved the additional guitar. I told her I knew Mike Nesmith who wrote her first hit and it turns out I knew the guy who wrote this and he had me sing it since it was too high for him. He had the melody and did not want to change it. He wanted to see how it would sound so someone at school told him I had the range for it and we got together to test it. Gary was a yr ahead of me and I knew of him since he was in the music classes and groups.
Let's see ... Country, check. Country Rock, check. Rock, check. Light Opera, check. Great American Songbook, check. Mexican, check. She mastered them all. One of her back-up bands turned into The Eagles! Her collaborations are epic. She ruled the 70's concert scene. Her voice is stilled now sadly.
If a person has ever experienced unrequited love this song smacks hard! A winning tri-fecta of Linda's powerful, emotional voice, amazing lyrics, and tender instrumentals and we could also include an accomplished arrangement.
Would be so awesome if periodically you did cover comparisons of songs Linda covered. Listen to the original artist’s version, then listen to the Linda version, side by side, and see which cover was better. Linda was famous for the fact that each cover she did became the definitive version and overshadowed the original artist’s own version. Her covers were that consistently great. Mick jagger of Rolling Stones said after she recorded the Stones’ song Tumblin Dice, it became her song. He admitted she sang it way better than him. Lol. And so many others like Heat Wave, Ooh baby baby, desperado, when will I be loved, poor pitiful me, its so easy, love me tender, just one look, that’ll be the day, you can close your eyes, many rivers to cross, everybody loves a winner,
I see you, SalvoG, "holding back the tears." A good singer will do that, getting you all choked up. Now you see why we love and treasure Linda Ronstadt ❤
I cried. 😪 I do every time I hear this song.
❤❤
@@Danandrea919 me, too :(
Linda's hit with the Stone Poneys was called Different Drum. It was written by Mike Nesmith of the Monkees. Definitely give it a listen.
For sure check that out
Studio version of it is a must! Live version has terrible audio quality.
Yes!@@evanhughes1510
Did not know there Nesmith wrote that song. Ya just taught me something.
I can confess that as a young adolescent boy, who loved rock, I was in love with Linda.
(But she never loved me back 😢)
I think she loved you back. I'm sure she knew who got her where she was.
You and every other red blooded boy. You can't help but fall in love with her. Beauty and angels voice
Mind you, there was also Farrah Fawcett and Linda Carter. I was a lad with varied tastes.
It was the poster with the flower in her hair that did us all in.
The greatest, most diverse female vocalist of her generation.

A lot of other reactors have played a version of this song that only has two verses. I’m glad you chose to play the complete version! Good on you!
During live TV shows they sometimes had to cut the song for time.
I graduated high school in ‘73 so I remember Linda and this song well. It’s so haunting and sad and still makes me cry to this day.

Maybe that should go on a movie/documentary poll
And she was the FIRST woman to do it.
Linda was part of everyone’s musical life in the 70s. Her voice has few equals. Glad you like it.
This song, the depth of her emotions, just rips me to shreads.
"Linda has a tear in her voice." Sums it up perfectly with this song.

That ;67 song would be "Different Drum", written by Michael Neismith of Monkees fame. First time hearing it and I was sold. Linda ruled in the '70s.
The greatest singer of her generation, and it isn't even close
