I mean, Iron Harvest is less "Tesla went nuts" and more "Tesela creates something the Europeans strapped guns to". He bemoaned the weaponization of the autoamachines to the point he isolated himself from the rest of the world and began building a super Wardenclyffe to wipe the out.

That’s an idea that has come up in a number of media. I can remember in dc comics it explains that the stories of Jay Garrick the original flash and the adventures of folks on earth 2 were dreams had by another guy who wrote them down into stories

Hi - I'm the author of Hakkō Ichiu! Thank you for covering my timeline here! I'm glad you sort of captured the mix of sane and absolutely absurd I tried to go for in writing it; like Roman Sternberg's China (which later brutally collapses into warlordism almost immediately). The timeline is on an extended hiatus currently, but I'm working on an eventual "reset" on Sufficient Velocity.

You know, seeing the Nintendo and Sony partnership timeline, it's actually interesting to see alternate history focusing in other topics that aren't war, politics or geography.
I'm reading a fascinating alternate history thread on a scenario where Jim Henson became the major creative director of Disney and the effects of this change on company and industry culture, his personal life, politics and the development and specifics of movies and tv shows.
^ This, people need to take note that not everything needs to be about war. Pop culture is just as important to history as well
Both that and sci-fi scenarios like For All Mankind (or Voyage from part 3) are really what get me invested with alternate history.
The best part of this one is Chris Chan never created Sonichu and instead becomes a school shooter beating out Columbine by a year and stopping it yet demonized Autism to mainstream media.

so in this new timeline Nintendo decided to make the virtual boy with sony thus gave the VB a super overhaul it desperately needed like a adjustable headset and better controller, either 16 or 36 bit graphic with all the color instead of just red and a large variety of 3d games since our vb didn't have any of that which resulted to sell poorly
I had an idea for an alternate history story but I’m not sure how many people would be interested in it. Basically it’s a timeline where Fleischer studios managed to make it past the 1940s without collapsing like it did in our timeline, and becoming very popular after Disney entered its dark age in the 1960s. this leads to darker animations becoming much more common and the entire “cartoons are just for kids” thing never comes about, with animation just being viewed as an alternative medium to live action. There are also some other things like Betty Boop becoming the darling American cartoon character rather than Mickey Mouse, Pixar becoming its own company permanently separating from Disney after their falling out, and WB never getting the rights to Superman as it remains with Fleischer along with the rights to DC in general (which also causes the 1966 Batman show to be a darker animated series rather than a goofy live action one)
There aren't nearly enough cultural alt-histories, it's all political, so your idea is a much needed breath of fresh air. Write it, the world could use it.

That actually sounds interesting, love cultural alt-histories. Its major enough to change popular culture drastically, but not so ridiculous like most political alt-histories. A major break away from war/political alt-histories could be what is needed right now.
I imagine alt histories of AAA gaming companies never falling for greed and just focus on making great and fun games. Sure, there would still be microtransactions and live services, but it wouldn't be as stingy or corrupt as it is today. Imagine the possibilities

I honestly didn't intend to write such a massive timeline, but I was having so much fun writing and the reception was so positive that it just kept going and going and going. It's good to be finished with it now, but I'm grateful to everyone who's enjoyed it, even the cringey poorly researched parts XD

Fortunately, I think there is a way for creators to cut out parts of a video without replacing it, so this is fixable to an extent
Fun fact: The computer in the "Difference Engine" alternate timeline was something that was actually attempted to be built during the era of divergence. An inventor named Charles Babbage had built something known as the Difference Engine, but it could only do math. But he had bigger plans, trying to work on something known as the Analytical Engine. This Analytical Engine was basically what got built in the alternate timeline, but in our timeline it was never finished, since Babbage couldn't get enough funding to build something so ambitious for the time.
There's that German alternate history book NSA - Nationales Sicherheits-Amt. Basically, what if the Nazis had that analytical engine and won the war with advanced computerization.
They built a replica, it's in the Science museum, London. Babbage only managed to build a small portion but it worked.
6:54 A world with a different Mario 64 might mean that the Super Mario 64 Iceberg never existed, and by extension, this video never existed either, making it the scariest timeline of all.

It's pretty hillarious to see the "John Brown succeeds and is better then you" and "The Confederacy succeeds and is better than you" back to back; like, you can tell the two authors were pretty much on the opposite ends of the political spectrum.
I guess sometimes you just can't help putting your own political agenda into an otherwise "alright" alternative history scenario. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I mean, I've seen a few obscure examples of people trying out "What if the Civil War just didn't happen at all", with an eventual mass rebellion of slaves fighting for their own freedom being a fairly logical and plausible direction to go with it.
IIRC one of those Harry Turtledove books (where the south wins the war) also has the slaves rebelling in the early 1900's and becoming Communists.
That part I actually like--it makes a certain amount of sense as something that might have happened, and it's interesting to think about.
But if you just go from that to "And then, literally everything was just better, because of Communism" it turns into ridiculous ideological wank fantasy pretty quickly.

@@macdeus2601 yeah that immediately turned me off from reading it. It's hilarious that a bunch of ex slaves somehow outcompete the super industrial north and then the world through communism lol.
Would've been a much better story if it talked about how race relations are affected and culture throughout North America with a literal ethno-state sitting on the US' front porch instead of a commie slave fantasy.

I'm surprised I managed to catch the 'joke' with the cause of Miyamoto's death involving his bike. Miyamoto used to live right next to Nintendo headquarters, and he rode his bike to work every day. That was until Nintendo made him take a car instead for his personal safety.

Another interesting alt-history is the Leviathan book trilogy by Scott Westerfeld. It's an alternate WW1 where the Central Powers (Clankers) have mechs and machines similar to Iron Harvest, while the Entente powers (Darwinists) have giant fabricated beasts made together by scientists by intertwining the life threads of lots of different animals.
I love that series, it was one of the first alt-history series I read and has amazing illustrations

I'm confused at how this iceberg is organized. Normally, the tip is very well-known material, and the deeper you go the more obscure and "in-group" the material gets. But, Red Dawn and Watchmen, two extremely well known franchises, are deep down in Level 9 and 11.
Hmmm I'm guessing this iceberg goes from "not that weird" to "weird as hell shit" the deeper it goes. Some iceberg lists are organized that way.

For example, "Nazis winning WW2" (Man in the High Castle) and "Albert Einstein goes back in time to kill Hitler to stop WW2 ends up causing a WW2 with the USSR and Psychics so the USSR goes back in time to kill Einstein and now has to fight a mech-fielding Japan with weaponized bears and airship bombers" (Red Alert series of C&C) aren't exactly on the same levels
Strangeness and complexity of the scenarios themselves. The upper tiers were basic "what if the Nazis won WWII" "What if the Soviets invaded America" "What if Confederates won the Civil War", and then more basic scenarios that are more about creating a setting than the alternate history itself, like the Yiddish Policeman's Union, where the alternate history is just "America makes a Jewish homeland in Alaska".
Then you have Watchmen, which is "what if costumed heroes were a real cultural phenomenon, and the first REAL superhuman becomes an American super-weapon, allowing the US to annex Vietnam, giving Richard Nixon an unlimited, decades long presidency, which has led to nuclear war being an imminent threat in 1985"
The Kaiserreich is the most popular alt his HoI4 mod yet is below several that I have never even heard of.
There has to be some sort of reason why the first known work of alternate history is at the bottom of the list.

Iron Harvest is one of the first Alternate Histories I heard of (that isn’t “what if bad guys won?”) I first got interested in it a year before release. It’s weird seeing it be so deep in the iceberg.
The placement of things on the iceberg seems wonky with more obscure things higher than they should be and vice versa.

It could be to do with the original iceberg post's age; before Iron Harvest, Jakub Rozalski's "1920+" was limited to just some concept art and a board game (with a _very_ loose story). If the post came out before the game, then it might have still been relatively obscure.

Harry Turtledove seems to have a fascination with alternate history timelines. Some weirder than others.

26:34 You talk about how it doesn't make sense that the Confederates are defeated faster in that timeline with British support. In our timeline the North had a hard time getting recruits motivated to fight the South, as for the most part public opinion was that they should just let the South do their own thing. In my view, the British getting involved would motivate the North to crush the South, seeing it as the British trying to reassert their former colonial authority over the South and stunting the growth of the United States.
While it's true it's still quite baffling. Even in our timeline the Union outnumbered the Confederates 2 to 1 and the Confederates still managed to drag out the war pretty evenly until the end.
Now consider that just 50 years prior, the last US war with the British ended in a stalemate with superior numbers being one of the greatest advantages for the US. This is also considering that mainland Britain was also fighting against Napoleon at the time. That advantage is now thrown out the window with the Union, as the nation is now divided and fighting itself. Not only this, but this novel expects readers to believe that the Union won the civil war faster despite the fact the Union would be fighting a war on two fronts? Against both the Confederate and the undivided attention of Britain? There's only so much sheer numbers can do.
I am sorry, there's only so much disbelief that I can suspend.
I am not convinced. The Confederacy had a huge problem with weapons, ammunition and supplies. I think that at minimum would be enough to balance better morale out and the North would be forced to have a lot of soldiers at the Canadian border to protect themselves of an invasion.
Sure, that could possibly lead to US ending up with part of Canada after the war if they won but it would turn the war into a political quagmire and it is possible that France could join the North to screw over England.
The Royal Navy would make things harder for the North, in the real world they stopped European ships from trading with the South which starved the Confederacy.
So no, having other nations involved would not mean a shorter conflict. The North might still have won but that isn't certain and who knows if any other European nations would have gotten involved as well if the British joined the conflict?
As it was, the South had a very short time they actually could win the war since they lacked the resources for a prolonged war with far less population and industry. Having foreign nations with their own industrial capabilities and resources as well as the worlds at the time largest army would not have been good for the North even if it would have helped the morale.
@@loke6664 I can't help but feeling that the South being so short on industrial power and supplies would be less of an issue in a world where they have British support, like Britain was the largest industrial power in the world at that time, and with the Royal Navy it's not like they'd struggle to get those goods and supplies to the confederates.

That doesn't mean that the South would win though. It really depends of how involved the British would be.
Even with arms and supplies from the British, the South is severely outnumbered by the North.
Now, during the war of 1812 Britain only sent limited forces. Part of the reason for that was that they were fighting Napoleon at the time, part economical and the only reason they sent those troops at all was due the US invasion of Canada.
So Britain could go all in, they could send a still significant force or they could just send Royal Navy ships.
With just ships and supplies, it is possible that the war would happen in the same way it did, with increased morale balancing out the supplies.
With some forces from Canada it really could go either way but it would prolong the war since the Union would be forced to defend the border.
With an all out attack North would be in trouble. The British army and technology was the best in the world at that time.
Britain was not in another large war like during 1812 and US was split in 2 so unless France, Spain or someone else also got involved the Union would be toast.
But no matter what, I just don't see British involvement leading to the war ending 2 years earlier. The one thing that could have done that was if the Union put Grant and Sherman in charge of the Union army earlier instead of a bunch of pretty incompetent commanders.
Well, if Britain did go all out the war could also have ended early but not with the Union winning.

I’m so happy you mentioned Crimson Skies. Arguably the most criminally underrated video game franchise of all time. High Road to Revenge holds up incredibly well today, despite its almost completely forgotten status

@@JosephKeenanisme It is meant to be a controversial British made documentary being shown on TV in the CSA for the first time since it was made. Hence the commercials. Also, not all of the ads are fake.
In terms of the real world, it was a college project with a history professor at the helm.

I never though to see a videogame alternative timelines here. There're a lot of points of divergence in the history of that industry, it could be pretty interesting to see alternative timelines by the technologic and marketing point of views.
Okay, I was inspired and imagined some alt scenarios about videogames:
-The '83 Crash didn't happened. Atari had a quality control and gave more liberty to its devs, avoiding the creation of bad games like Pac-Man and E.T. (and maybe Activision). The market is still flooded with consoles, but those fade quickly due to Atari better bussiness, the crash is minimum and only affect a portion of the industry. By 1985, the American market is dominated by Atari 7200, Commodore 64, and a Japanese company in third place with its Nintendo Advance Video System. Videogames are considered more like an adult hobby, changing the pop culture of the 90s.
-Nintendo lose to Universal. After the release of Donkey Kong, Universal sued Nintendo claiming plagiarism of King Kong. On our timeline, Nintendo won and the millionarie compensation was used for the development of the Famicom. Imagine if, for wathever reason, Nintendo loses and it goes to bankrupt a few years later. This scenario is most like what if Nintendo didn't existed.
-SNES-CD existed but by Phillips. SNES-CD scenarios are huge to analyse. After broke the contract with Sony, Nintendo teamed with Phillips to develop the CD drive for the SNES. The difference is that Phillips planned to used the CD-i format instead of the CD-ROM, which require its own compute system to work. I think that it could be failed like the Sega CD due to its high price and not convincing the public about the new techonology. However, there was pressure from the developers for larger storage devices, that maybe could lead into the next Nintendo system to be CD based. Also, I think that this scenario could change the direction of videogames, because in early 90s, CD titles were more focused in interactive movies (that was the 'next leap'). 3D graphics probably wouldn't appear until the late 90s/early 2000s, because it was influenced by many factors that initiated by Sony and Nintendo breakup (like Nintendo using the Silicon Graphics technology on the N64, which was 'impossible' with CDs)

I study phonology, so i have a good enough ear to recognize that this vowel sound that Cody does is not the same as the existing vowel, they just sound more similar to an untrained ear. in IPA, the difference might be visualized with [aʊ̯] as compared to something like [ɐo̯].
I love how both Guns of the South and Bring the Jubilee basically just abolish slavery despite the fact that owning slaves was the reason they wanted to secede.

1. I don't see how the native Americans in Europe would really retain their culture while surrounded by Europeans but that kind of thing is common in alt history so whatever.

For the space Afro-american league I have questions as to why the north would be cool with them just owning the south and more importantly as someone from the American South East I doubt we have the resources to become a superpower regardless of the color of the people running the area or the presence of fully automated luxury space communism.
3. Why are there multiple fully realized alt histories based on whether or not Sony made the Playstation. Where so these people find time in the day?
I think these are lower down the list for the wackiness.
It's kind of obvious the author of Fire on The Mountain is more interested in making a propaganda piece than making a realistic story. That should've been obvious around the "literally every capitalist nation falls to the red tide, the world becomes a paradise, and by the way, YOU ARE LIVING IN THE WORSE TIMELINE! REVOLUTION NOW SHEEPLE!" part.

how are the books past book 1? i got the first audio book and enjoyed it enough that the 2nd is on my list to get eventually but i wasnt in a big rush to do so.

i particularly love the sony/nintendo timelines, its neat having alternate timelines that focus on something other than wars or conquest but instead affect culture and the world in more 'subtle' ways. also i just love the idea of an alternate 90s/2000s

I as a child influenced by the series Tail Spin and a general interest in aviation, I was so in love with Crimson Skies. The PC game had almost the perfect balance between an arcade game and a simulation. I loved all the designs so much that I spend years building my own planes with lego.
You know...I'm a bit surprised that no one talked about Leviathan from Scott Westerfield. Really put into perspective how different power structures would benefit/hinder the middle east in alternate World War 1.
I read that series of books in High School. It was pretty interesting and the drawings placed throughout the book were beautiful. Also Nikola Tesla trying to build a death ray is a major plot point lol.

I loved the illustrations. I'm not much of a reader, but this series kept me entertained as a kid.
Another interesting alternate history (by ACCIDENT) comes from "The Last and First Men", by Olaf Stapledon. Later the book becomes the first? FAR future/alternate-humans stories (think "All Tomorrows", but from 1930) but the _early_ part has...what was the future to him but is now an alternate 20th/early 21st century. It includes things like WWII not quite happening the way it DID, but still, a German person pisses off another European culture and _a_ war happens, a toxic spill goes way across Europe and makes large chunks of it uninhabitable for a very long time, America becomes culturally dominant and starts trying to police everyone's morals in a very fundamentalist way, and all kinds of wars are started over oil in Asia.
Did I mention this was written in freaking 1930? It was written in freaking 1930.
...oh wait this was supposed to be about ALTERNATE history. Okay, in this universe, in addition to WWII kinda not happening, the Cold War never happens either and Russia and America kinda leap straight to their real-life 1990s/2000s relationship. There's also a literal stupidity virus, a plane-obsessed religion/society, polygamy for all, medical advancements in longevity and childbirth, and when we finally "tame the atom", it doesn't involve regular nukes, but instead a freaking ANTIMATTER weapon, which someone "secretly" tests by disappearing an island.
A while after everything is wiped out, then we have an Incan-style culture resurrecting civilization, even doing a Sunset Invasion. So yeah, that alt-hist trope is in here too, although in this case it happens well into our future as well as Stapledon's.
But yeah, the FIRST part of "The Last and First Men" is _now_ alternate history, and an interesting one. I'd recommend it.

One alternate history you haven’t mentioned yet I’ve been hoping would pop up is ‘A Canticle for Liebowitz’, with its sending the world back to the Middle Ages with a nuclear apocalypse I the 1950’s or so, and then working forward through a few hundred years of development to the point where humans find another way to destroy the earth. I know it’s impossible to mention everything, and that this project is still in the works, thanks for all the hard work you put in to make these videos happen! I hope everything ends up working out for you!

But really I don't see how the lack of competition would create more advanced and successful gaming landscape overall. Like why would you push to develop more advanced consoles (then those that actually existed) if you have practically no competition? Once we get past a CD rom N64 I think we are in imaginary land.
