    It is normal for skaters to put their left foot forwards and push with their right foot. It's called the "regular" stance and it's the most common. Skating with the right foot in front and left behind is called "goofy" stance, not because people who do it are goofy, but because it's a reference to the Mickey Mouse character Goofy who surfed like that in the old cartoons. I'm a right handed person and I actually skate goofy myself because I feel like I can do the tricks better with my right foot, but it's all about whatever feels best.

      Exactly what I thought but apparently only 56% of people are regular-footed even though 90% of people are right-handed. Interesting but who knows how accurate data on that will ever be.
      As for possible reasons why, I think it's because you have more pushing power with your right foot. Your left foot just needs to stand there.

    I have a tip for you, and any other beginners. Helmets and learning how to fall right can help confidence in skating. Before I started wearing a helmet, I was scared to do most things. 3 months later and I am skating 3 stairs and small gaps.

    ive been skateboarding for about a year now, and i havent progressed much because of your same fear of falling and embarrassing myself. Girl skaters have so much more pressure cuz its considered being a poser if you bad when your really just beginning. But uve inspired me to not gaf and to continue to skate again and hopefulley i can land my first kickflip!! GL on ur journey too!!

    • @AndySo2000
      @AndySo2000 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Trust me people don't think you're a poser if you just started out. Everyone started somewhere. If anything other skaters only want to help you learn if you ask them. I'm not a beginner by a long shot, but I actually rather skate with people who are just learning more. But I still like to skate by myself. Just stick with it and learn how to ride the board and get comfy with that. Then work your way up slowly. It most likely will take at least 5 years to be really good. By then it is a lot easier. You have to build up certain muscles in your feet, toes, legs etc for a few years. I mean skating is scary and skaters know how hard it is, so don't feel shy around other skaters. I can understand how most normal people think everyone skates like tony hawk but in reality that just isn't true. The only way you're a poser is if you say you skate and don't skate like at all, like at any level. Like if I said I skate but I actually had never done it before. Or you wear only skate cloths and never skated before or cared about it, but skaters themselves don't care about this. The more money and popularity a company has is better for skaters. Because they can release more products etc, like look at vans. I don't care that they're mainstream, I don't care if non skaters wear them at all. More money for vans, more new shoes come out that help me skate better. Just my 2 cents. Just give it some time and take it slowly with skating, don't rush into tricks until you know you're ready. Realistically kickflips will take a year or 2 to land. Learn how to ollie first, manuals, do those for a few months and move up to more. etc. Most skaters didn't learn kickflips in a week. In the 80s skating died because it had a boom and then kids quit because they realized how hard it was.

    HOW TO FIX ROCKET OLLIES:
    1. Move your front foot closer to the front bolts (not exactly on them). I know you heard it some where that placing your front foot at the center of the board makes your ollies higher. That tip only applies if you already know how to ollie.
    2. Actually lift off your back leg. Before attempting to ollie try jumping without the board and try to lift your thighs as close as you can get to your chest (or actually hit your chest). It's for you to feel/visualize how you should really be jumping while doing ollie.
    3. Shift your weight. It seems like all your weight is on your back leg. That's why you keep falling backwards. Straight body, bend down, then jump as high as you can. ACTUALLY JUMP LIKE REALLY TRY TO LIFT OF YOUR THIGHS CLOSE TO YOUR CHEST.
    anyways that's all I can give lol it took me months to learn to do an ollie, most people take weeks. As long as you don't give up you'll learn it. Thanks for making hilarious skate videos I haven't skated in years if I put up a skate video on my channel it's because I got inspired from you ahaha. Gracias!

    For ollie advice, it looks pretty good so far. There are just a few small things to adjust and you'll have it in no time. First, move your front foot forward so it sits just behind the front truck screws with the toe of your shoe in line with the side of the board. That'll make sure you can level out the board quickly in the air before you land to fix the straight up rocket. For a moving ollie, you're not only jumping up, but also forwards just a bit so you'll carry your momentum into your board. Otherwise, the board will just shoot out in front of you before you can land on it. What helped me is to think about my front foot kicking the nose of the skateboard. It should catch right on the little dip before the nose bends upward. That's what gives skateboarders the ability to control their ollies in the air. It's all in control of that front foot. The back foot should just bend at the knee and lift up to where the board should level out to. The last tip is just practice a little bit every day. There are right techniques to the ollie, but even if you know it in your head, your body has to try it many times before you get the hang of it. When I learned it took about two weeks of daily practice to land a good moving ollie, and another month before I could ollie over stuff without falling down. It's better to practice for a little bit every day as it'll be much harder to learn if you try while tired and sore.

      As someone who skated as a kid, and every other summer or so decide to pick it up again, I'll say that Teacp127's comment is on point. Focus on predicting your jump a bit forward, depending on how fast you're going (I kinda sabotaged myself as a kid by practicing too much standing still and/or on grass). Also, I find having your backfoot really centered (or wherever isn't making your bord flip in any way) and towards the back of the kick gets increasingly important for control. No sideway motions wanted for this particular trick. All of the power goes through your back foot so having it even a little off the sweetspot can mess up the cleanliness of the ollie, as they get higher. Good luck to you and everyone else practicing this! Have fun!

    I know the struggle of thinking everyone is judging you, and this makes learning new things alone so hard. You either have to learn it with a friend or do it overnight. I mostly learned to rollerblade at night, now I'm rollerblading every Friday night with 30-40 people. Because since I moved to a busier city, I can't find a safe place at night to practice. I don't know if it's because I'm an introvert or anxiety, probably both :)
    Either way, great video ! Always worth the wait.

    Amazing video!! It seriously took me by surprise; everything you tried out really made you shine as a beginner, in my opinion. Your point of view helps to see a side of skateboarding that is less calculated and more about trials and having fun; no stressing pressure. People watching one during their first pushes is awkward and scary; but honestly, you are able to bring hope to those people that can't bring themselves to get better on skateboarding.
    I'm not kidding; you are doing SO well; you have better balance than I do because I'm a touch chubby. Your body is just fit for skateboarding, and the things you tried in the seven days -and the total of how the seven days ended - are worth hanging the mouth for (to me, at least). You're doing great!! And I am personally enjoying the path you're going through! 💪💪✨

    You’re doing great! The best way to improve=never stop trying. Don’t bother with what others might think. Just focus on yourself and the board. People get successful not by being perfect from the get go but by tenacity and grit, by not seeing failure as something fixed and final but as an opportunity to grow - and your improvements show that. Be fierce!

    Learn the wrap around.
    I learnt this in 15min very easy.
    Best bit of advice I can give is find someone to skate with, this honestly will help progression and you won't care about anyone walking by or even just watching.
    At 45 I've not skated for 25yrs at all. I was the same, didn't want to try tricks incase someone was watching and a fear of falling incase I was laughed at.
    I went to the local skatepark and within 5 minutes I had 3 teens offering to help or give advice. Made me feel so much more relaxed and no one's laughing at me for bailing.
    All this started again because my 11yr old son asked me to teach him how to ride a board so I'm relearning to skate 👊

    Most people have a slightly different way of learning to ollie, however I think that most would agree that the outside of your front foot should at least be at the half way mark (literally mark your griptape if it helps), anywhere up to just behind the front trucks. Then with the sweeping motion, I would practice without a board first, and basically it's like if you were doing a big sideways skip over a imaginary rope, with a little flying kick at the end as if you were trying to kick a leprechaun in the head (preferable to a child, as leprechauns are already imaginary), and then see how you go from there.

    For your stand still ollie - I think the reason your board is going more rocket is because your front foot is a little low on the board. I would suggest moving the front foot higher up on the board a bit. Skateboarding is so tough but so rewarding - you're not bad after only 7 days!

    I dabled in a little bit of skateboard back in highschool, if you want a "trick" that feels neat to do while not being complicated at all is to drop down ledges while riding. like a sidewalk ledge and then bigger. trick is to keep your knees bent (but nott too much) and to have enough speed. then when you get the ollie down, you can mix the two together and gap stuff. It's just scary at first, especially since I also had the same issue of overthinking and fearing pain.
    Keep it up though!

    Okay so I have started skateboarding recently and we have very few girls who do skateboarding and at first I felt so embarrassing to practice or to fall down infront of many other skater guys some even said it's not easy for girls to learn skateboarding and today I saw your video and made me feel so confident and your efforts and all made me feel that I should do hardwork and practice again and again this video was really helpful thanks alot ❤️

    Keep going, keep practicing. It is hard you know.... but you learn. Being able to ride it comfortably is the first goal. Being able to ride it anywhere, maybe down curbs aswell. Then practice ollie, until you can ride up and down the curb (sidewalk and curb) when you can do that, you can work on higher ollies, since this will make it easier to do tricks (more hang time "air time")
    Well done both of you 👍

    Advice for the ollie. Position your front foot just behind the bolts of your leading foot and also lift your back foot when you ollie I had the same issue where my ollies just went straight up but the fix was just lifting our bending your back leg after flicking the board up. Good luck on your journey!

    Some more advice: when you do an Ollie, try to bend your knees more before you pop. Like really exaggerated the squatting motion. This helped me a lot with fixing the rocket Ollie problem. I would think of the motion as 1 (bend your knees) and two (pop and the rest of it). I hope this helps!

    9:53 - That's all that skateboarding is, really. It's a mental game; neither the board nor the ground is your enemy---it's just yourself. It's not enough to believe that it can be done, you have to also believe that it can be done by you. That's all it is---visualization and believing in oneself. And that's so beautifully positive You're a skater, you're a zen master.

  • @miltonbates6425
    @miltonbates6425 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great progression. One tip I could give you is to allow your knees to bend as you're landing your ollie. You're landing in an overly upright stance (with your knees locked) which will make you much more unstable and unbalanced than if your knees were allowed to bend slightly. Other than that, great job!

  • @justanotherperson404
    @justanotherperson404 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hii! I just watched your video and you’ve made really good progress in 7 days! Just a little tip I would recommend if you wanna skate faster try leaning forward and thrusting your hand in-font of yourself when you take your next step to push of (if that’s makes sense?) 😅

  • @OldmanSk8ing
    @OldmanSk8ing ปีที่แล้ว

    The dominant foot seems to work best as the back foot because when you pivot and turn you use the back foot for leverage. Like when you kick a ball you use the right foot for power if you’re dominant in that foot. But with skating and board sports anything goes and it’s usually what feels good.

    2.Really put ur weight in ur front foot before popping
    3.Bend down a bit more

  • @chidiche2
    @chidiche2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    5:18 yes it's normalormal. I personally am right handed and used to ride comfortably goofy, when I got back into skateboarding many years later, 3 years ago when I turned 18, I realized I did stationary ollies so well with my left foot forward as a when I was a kid but I couldn't push the board with my left foot forward let alone do and ollie with my dominantleg which is my right foot (goofy). So when I got back into skating, I forced myself to ride in the position that felt comfortable learning tricks on. Now I use my off leg (left foot) to do flicking and sliding since it feels more loose and less heavy than my dominant leg. I started skating as a goofy rider and made the permanent transition to regular, because of that some habits linger such as popping the board to my right hand with my right foot instead of my left side.

  •  ปีที่แล้ว

    Just raise your back knee higher after poping, it is basically your back foot preventing the board to dip down forward when slided by your front foot. You have to air squat more. Great progress!

    A tip on the half casper. Sit on a bench and try the trick with your feet. It ill give a better visualization of how the trick will happen and what you need to do with tour feet to land it.
    Just like many others have said for your ollie. Shift your weight more to your front foot. When you attempt it, think "how high can i jum?" And send it. The rolling version of it takes a while to get use to the fact that your moving. But if it helps, think that your jumping sideways in the direction that the board is moving.
    Hope that wasn't to much at once. Cant wait to see the next video of Skating woth Hegla.

    My problem was entirely with my back foot and thinking about it as jumping like a guy who's saying "yippee" helped me. Pulling my back knee up to my chest helps me to get the back of the board higher in the air and makes pushing down on the front easier.
