I was prepping our RV for the home opener during that Houston game at NRG. Wasn't that Tahj's first game? He had a long run for a touchdown that really helped Tech win that game. Tahj Brooks will definitely be missed and will never be forgotten in Raiderland! 28 = Red Raider Legend!!!
Close game, third quarter, fake punt from our own 30. Still no reasonable explanation from our head coach. He did say he was looking for a spark. Well, Coach blew up the game for an unjustified gamble. Yes, we were overmatched in many ways, but stupid is as stupid does.
They had three true freshmen playing too. Overall it was a good game. That fake punt set yall back tho and some of the calls by the refs on both sides were questionable not gonna lie.
They didn’t stomp us. Anyone not named Deion Sanders will have great difficulty building a team straight out of the portal. Not even Indiana is playing with so many transfers on the oline/dline.
CU wasn’t the only team that dominated our lines. We were just able to overcome 6 other teams. We have dominated only 1 team despite having Taj and upgrading our receiving corp. All said, we are likely to achieve preseason predictions which is an improvement. However, it is McGuire’s job to take the next step. It is a different world to compete in now. It is all free agency now with no time to develop year over year. I don’t know how you recruit and maintain the depth it takes to make it through inevitable injuries but it will be McGuire’s legacy as to how well he outcompetes the other staffs off the field as much as on it..
@@LockedOnTexasTechJohn Kurtz podcast has questioned how Joey hasn’t broken through and questions several excuses Joey keeps making (head sets, refs, etc). His point is Joey had the opportunity he just hasn’t got it done. The Monty show TH-cam based in Utah says The big 12 desperately needs Tech to be better since it’s a large fan base and thinks Joey should be fired.
Chris, believe me, I am thankful for these broadcast and I realize you are broadcasting and I am receiving, but there are times when I wish you would just finish a thought.
I feel he does. He also has to navigate what all he can say vs what all he actually knows. Lots of “towing a line” he has to think through as he answers questions.
@JasonHelm-j7s he was in, record was 122, he had 137 altogether. We were fighting the clock trying to score. And yes I'm pretty sure we will see Tahj, with more of a mixture of Williams and Dickey
I agree that the OL ultimately determines the ceiling of a team. But it also needs to be mostly home grown. And the ones that are looking like they can get it done are gonna have to be paid or else they’ll be gone. I hope JMs recruiting has some young guys that are getting close!
Regarding OL issues, Ŧ’s history aside, McGuire’s grade is still incomplete being his 1st year but given Ŧ’s run production and pass protection “ overall” it seems to going in the right direction. I agree with your comments about Ŧ’s current starters. Unless it’s obvious that the 2nd year players r ready to start Ŧ will have to pay up to get the best tackle and guard available in the Portal. Paying max $ for 4 or 5 star freshman would help. It will be HC McGuire’s 4th year and needs to deliver period. Getting both OL and DL position groups back on track are a must to having better results. Very hard to understand how another season of mixed results like this season has produced will be acceptable to anyone.
Unfortunately, Joey McGuire is more interested in consecutive bowl wins, even if it means playing in the Toilet Bowl. Coach Prime on the other hand has said he doesn’t just want to be bowl eligible. He wants to make the playoffs. Teams play as well as they’re coached.
Interesting that Chris brought up the thought that maybe play calling has been affected by wanting to get Tahj the record. I've been wondering about that too. Congrats to Tahj however. The first time I thought, hey we might have something here, is during the WV game in his freshman year. They have the lead late and they are trying to run clock. Sarrodrick was hurt and it was on Tahj. He got some of the toughest 2, 3 and four yard runs to get 1st downs I've ever seen. They have questions to deal with in the OL for sure. They definitely need to upgrade at OT. They have some questions to deal with with that redshirt freshman class, Fattig, Shaw, Sill and Carr. They're going to be sophomores and if they don't start seeing playing time, how many are going to hit the portal and is that meh or bad. I'm already thinking that with Sciury coming back, is there one of those guys that are guards, that are going to bolt. As far as the fake punt, I think CJM just said we didn't get lined up right. Personally, I really like CJM and root for his success, but after the 10th game of the season, I'm starting to get a little tired of hearing that excuse for in game mistakes. It's past time for them to start getting lined up right.
Cant blame Joey for trying to manufacture some offense by calling a fake punt. Reminds me of the fake FG for a TD. The fake punt totally caught me by surprise. I liked the call, we just needed to complete the play. I would point to the " roughing the passer " play as a gigantic shift in the direction that game was headed towards. How many face masks where missed? The " roughing the passer " face mask call on Behren left the door open to make the decision that was made. It seemed like the decisions made in officiating the game had a vested interest in the outcome of the game. Our offensive play calling lacked in the ability to overcome these obstacles. The best player on the field may have been sitting on our Texas Tech bench. I would start Will Hammond for the remainder of his red shirt games. Start vs Ok St and WVU and sit the bowl or mix and match as desired. I would start Will Hammond next season. Proud of Tahj for breaking the all time Texas Tech rushing yards record, I wish he could have done it with a W and an opportunity to play for the big enchilada. We need help in the OC department. Proud of this team.
I have been a Tech fan since the Boys Club (now Boys and Girls Club) in Snyder took us to games in the 80's. I have been through the good and bad. I am going to say this because I feel like it is truth. BU and TCU exposed our pass defense. Tech has never had a good defense in general. To watch CU roll through our O-Line was not surprising. CU prepared for the Tahj and when they shut down Tahj, Tech had no response. CU's defense was prepared to stop Tahj and in doing so, they got to Morton. Tech's offense appeared to be one dimensional; run Tahj. CU's defense was prepared for that. CU's D-Line probably practiced 16 hours a day plugging holes knowing Tech was going to run the ball. The OC should have noticed this right away. The passing game got us down the field on the first drive quickly. We abandoned the passing game all to get stopped in our tracks when running the ball. We were simply out played; just like the BU game.
If we have a good back, and we do, why not run more PAP, just sweep, option, etc. Seems like we run dive or counter and then switch to empty back-field passing. We aren't fooling anyone and make even harder to run or pass.
All this recent losing to beatable opponents conjures up witnessing Bobby Leach streak down the sideline for another agonizing defeat for my beloved Red Raiders. That was a game we had no business winning and still managed to blow it.
Where are we on redshirt watch? Dickey got banged up and disappeared, is he under his 4? Jacoby at 4? Hammond has his redshirt, can play in the last 2 if Morton is hurt. Who else we got?
You guys giggle about Mills asking for more money but these coaches have had their agents demanding more money for these coaches for years. I don’t blame them for a second. Now Joey has a terrible OL but getting paid millions to be the coach.
Colorado was the better team. But we could have defeated them at home. I still point to that late interception/fumble whatever when I guys should have gotten on the ball.
Yeah and Tech doesn’t have Nebraska’s nor home field advantage..they def tried though…not quite ready for the lights though and that’s ok .. Tech has some quality ball players though 28 and 8 for sure. The LB is solid as well but the crowd showing and antics was deep block trailer parkish.. do better that wasn’t safe and takes the convo away from from your talent on the field. Best wishes the rest of way
How can we be in this poor of a position on the OL in year three of JM with the "best GM" we've ever had? How can talent evaluations be this bad year after year?
Cody Campbell's NIL philosophy is so flawed. He wants to spend money on talent retention instead of talent acquisition. Who on this shiddy team is worth keeping except Chapman Lewis and Jacob Rodriguez? Everybody else, especially Morton, is eminently replaceable
Joey McGuire made a positive step in building the OL when he replaced Hamby with Clay McGuire, but we are in year one of development rather than year 3. Hamby did not develop one single OL, Sheridan Wilson would not be where he is today if Hamby was still here. We need to pick up a couple of quality OL in the portal and develop Wilson, Carr, Sill, Fattig, Long, Hendrix, Ponton, Davis, etc. I'm not as confident as I once was, but we need to replace AhYou, as he hasn't developed anyone either. Mostly though, we need McGuire to buy into 1-0 and not get overly confident at times.
My thumbs down isn't for your comment. You are correct. But damn, we never seem to get out of year 2 or 3 of development. Just never get fully over the hump. I am from Houston and Tech reminds me of the oilers. Always looking like we could really have something special and just year in year out letdown
That’s a great observation on Brooks. He DOES have to generate most of his production. So glad to call him a Red Raider!

Didn’t Colorado stomp us with a team built via the portal???

I thought the Colorado O-Line was holding or tackling our guys a lot.
The national media is asking why McGuire hasn’t made more progress. The local media is puffing him up. It’s odd.
What national media & what did they say?
Because all of us Tech fans WANT Joey to succeed. But he's just not a top end, Succeed-at-all-cost, kind of coach.

Tahj needs 1 more 100 yard game to be on top of the 100 yard games in tech history. He's tied with byron at 21 I believe
Will we even see Taj again? Seems he didn't come in much after the record. Or measure it missed something.

Casey don’t you think the quality in the portal has improved just due to NIL? Gotta believe that has made a huge difference.
Chris who are the top 5 portal players that left tech and impacted other teams during the joey tenure?
The Salary CAP, whatever it may be, will be effective next season. So- how about cash signing bonuses for top players to beat the CAP?

Great insight on the fake, but most of the time, aren't there parameters to calling it? Like you only call it on your side of the field.
Our coaches intentionally took their foot off the gas. Went from 4 down to 3 down in a hurry even though they rattled Sanders through the 1st quarter.

Nebraska stomped CU by rattling them from the first play of the game. Tech had a similar opportunity, but just couldn’t keep their foot on the gas

Best O lines are built and have time to develop cohesion. Unfortunately, in today’s college athletics, you neither get nor have the time.
The year was lost last December when Joey let mills and Jackson walk. Terrible scouting by this coaching staff they need to own this error.
I could see Tahj play the next two games and not play the bowl game. He ends in a big game vs WVU at home and move on to the NFL prep.
The entire coaching staff needs to be fired. They dont have that want to win. They're not dawgs. They're complacent being mid every year.
