Man I remember when BMW first brought these coupe styles out I fell in love with it. I know most people hate them but I just think they are so nice and look like a giant turtle. Lol.
Not sure I’d ever consider this if looking at something like the M3. If I’m considering an M3, vehicle dynamics are king so this being notably taller and heavier are both detrimental. Conversely if I’m buying an S/CUV, I’ll likely look at something prioritizing space and utility.
This is why I’d buy a 20 year old Sienna and an M3 instead of buying an X3 that doesn’t handle as well as an M3 and doesn’t carry as much stuff as a Sienna.
@@fcex558 sorry initially misinterpreted your wont be bothered statement. If you want a jack of all trades vehicle, the X3M works great. But the X4M is simply a compromise of everything, only providing some aesthetic value (if that's your thing). Further if you have better things to do than do things with cars, why bother to get an M model to begin with? So many more comfortable and practical vehicles out there to choose from (including within BMW's lineup).
@@fcex558 then why not buy a Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross? It doesn’t seem like you’d be interested in any BMW since you said you have other things to do than think about cars. Wow! Best, most comprehensive review on the updated X4M. Thanks for all your work and for making it a point to do this, rather than the X3M. I recently test drove one of these on the autobahn in Germany and I’ve never felt so stable and planted in a SAV at 180+.
Nice looking vehicle. I also like the higher H point (getting older!) and wish you'd add a H point comment to all your reviews. I also like the much upgraded interiors in the newer BMWs -- the older models had surprisingly austere and hard surfaced interiors. For such a large heavy vehicle, the acceleration are handling are amazing! Maybe they could eliminate detectable turbo lag by adding an electric motor (in a hybrid version that might also help fuel efficiency)? The harsher ride is not surprising, and might be a good trade off for some. But that road noise ??.
I just traded my 2022 M3 for an X4 M40i after test driving it. It has 80% of the power and wonderful engine noise as the M3. It’s more compliant, more fuel efficient but similarly thrilling either Competition models. As much as I loved the M3, it was too harsh and I rarely unleashed its full power. Partly because I didn’t want to nose my license and partly because there is a turbo lag when flooring it. I WILL miss that flawless handling into sharp corners! But the value of an M40i is spectacular considering just how much of the Competition versions it retains. M40i also can also be ordered to look ultra mean: 21” tires, Shadowline (a must!) and carbon fibre inside. Oh, and highway noise in the M3 is in the low 80s. Add some music and you’ll be in hearing damage range (85 DB). Mid-70s DB for the X4 Comp and my guess the M40i is quieter still (just a guess). The db measure mentioned in the video I really appreciated learning about. It makes a significant difference on longer trips.
I love ❤️ this car. It’s my best car ever. The fact that it can do 3.4sec to 💯 km is amazing. That’s a super car territory. What I don’t like is that fake engine noise coming from 🔊.

I’m convinced BMW only sells competition flavor M vehicles on the lot. I’ve not seen a modern M car without the competition badge in about 2 model years. At least this is the case in central FL.
I got a X4 35d (not M version, but top of the range of X4) in Australia and it's crazy. Take 5.2s to 100km/h and handling quality is absolutely amazing.
Thanks very much for a very detailed review video. Makes me think and consider about buying between this and the Audi Q3 even more.. very hard decision. 😆😆
U know what care doesn’t get the same love as the X6 or X4….the Acura ZDX I feel like if they released that today it would get a better reception than when it got released
14:52 you said it doesn't have a moving map like modern Audis but the live cockpit does have a moving map in the center of the screen, albeit not google-style maps. If you go back to 14:34 you can see "Starview Terrace" on the bottom when you're not in the M screens. Maybe the code is corrupt and that's why it's only showing the road name. But the moving map feature is on BMWs with love cockpit.
People will definitely feel that difference in torque between the comp and the regular M. 70 lb-ft in a turbo engine I imagine would be pretty noticable.
I miss actual crush-zone bumpers that keep expensive metal parts from being damaged. If that BMW is ever rear-ended, that rear hatch is probably going to be completely destroyed.
In this very narrow space, you'd have to give me at least 10 good reasons not to just go Stelvio Quad and be done with it. If it is the "Performance" slider you want set to 10, that is your only choice (and it is by far the best looking in this class too).
Is it really not much more stiff than m3? Last x3m I drove the suspension was so stiff that the m3 was just a lot more comfortable for daily. If it’s just the same as m3 in stiffness then it’s a major improvement
Sadly so few people buy an F-Pace that it barely shows up on competitive cross shopping data. It makes me sad since I think the F-Pace is worth a look.
This doesn't drive as well as the M3. It's not as practical as the X3 M. It's more expensive than both. Unless this is your idea of a perfectly styled vehicle, there's no reason to buy this beast.
The rear 'bumper', if you can call it that, is hideous. On a darker color you don't notice it as much, but those goofy bumper lines stand out like a sore thumb on a color like white.
BMW disappoints me: Why have an adjustable suspension if even comfort mode is too stiff? And on top of that there's lots of road noise inside -- even at this price. This is supposed to be a dual personality vehicle.
If I'm buying an $80K performance car, then I care most about performance and nods to practicality are a (possibly necessary) compromise. Picking the X4 because it is better at hauling bags of mulch isn't something I'd find compelling. Further, if utility is a major desire for a buyer in this segment then the X3 M seems like the better option.
Why is that the Germans can pull these " sport coupes" but the Japanese either become a station wagon like subaru or polarizing like the Honda Crosstour???
Well Alex you clearly have no clue what you are talking about. Coupe is a French word that means to cut or cutting. All coupes (pronounced with an A sound at the end) have a sloped rear deck on the vehicle to help them "CUT" through the wind better. A vehicle s not a Coupe' unless it has a sloped rear deck. Coupe' has NOTHING to do with two or four doors. Heck, it could have 6 or 8 doors so long as it has a sloped rear deck to assist in "CUTTING" through the wind. Just because American car manufacturers have always only had two doors, doesn't mean they are required to have only two doors. Also, a COUP is what chickens live and a Coupe' is a type of automobile.
I would say the X4M is about as sexy as a Honda Crosstour or Acura ZDX. I’ve never found any SUV to be very sexy. M3 > X3M > X4M The X3 looks better to me and is way more practical. I feel like any car enthusiast that buys an X3M or X4M will have immediate buyers remorse for not buying an M3. You kinda always know if you want the M3 or not.
